Looking forward to checking these out later today! :)

HECK YES!!!!!!! It’s BCS Tuesday again, man the weeks keep flying by lol I can’t wait to watch this when I have the time. Keep up the great work you two✌🏻

Jeff K.

I totally forgot that they talked about Carol Burnett in the show. Fun fact: she is a HUGE fan of BB and BCS. Apparently she reached out directly to Vince Gilligan to tell him what a fan she was. That must have been surreal to have a legend reach out out of the blue to praise your show. Also, another fun fact: Rebecca is played by Ann Cusack. Yes, John and Joan’s sister.

Maiki

"Ew" - "What? EW! NOT LIKE THAT!" already made my day. Thanks for the hard laugh guys, absolutely fantastic :D

Joel

Little refresher about Gus' involvement with the story. In Breaking Bad, Gus used his Los Pollos restaurant as a front for distribution in service to the cartel. But we know based on how everything played out that he was manuevering to cut-off distribution and build his own source of product via the lab while using his own drug manufacturer. At this point in BCS, the cartel use the Salamancas resources for their business.

Trevor S Bright

Gus and the Salamancas both work for the Cartel. They're just forced to work with each other, until Gus in Breaking Bad was in a position to go out on his own and take them all out.

Trevor S Bright

OMG that whole "Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair" bit just made my day. "Ew!!" "What? EWWW!!!!! Not like that!!!!" Priceless

G P

The excruciating scene in e6 with Kim and Howard walking in silence is one of my favourite scenes in television

Michael Haug

Love when Simone drops the random Keanu Reeves Ted "Whoooooaaa""

Vwlss Nvwls

The actor playing Hector Salamanca did such a great job in that diner scene. He talked and came off like this nice old man, but you can tell the way he took the cup from the waitress that he looks down on everyone. I just felt that one gesture spoke so much. I had to laugh when you were talking about Indiana Jones and the "kalima" thing. I worked in printing for 30+ years, and one of the brands of paper was Kalima, and every time I would see it I would walk by saying it like the guy in Temple of Doom. :D I love seeing Simones cats show up in these, especially when you can hear them purring. I miss having a dog or cat, I have to enjoy them vicariously through others. :D

Jeff K.

Regarding George's question about if we've ever eaten at a place that's very obviously a front. I'm 99% sure that I have. There was an Italian restaurant/pizza place in my town that very recently closed, but was open for YEARS despite the fact that no one was ever there. Basically never any cars in the parking lot, and yet they stayed open for a very, very long time. Keep in mind, I live in a fairly small town (about 50k people) in Texas. And every once in a while, when I would drive by, there would be very nice cars with New Jersey plates parked outside, and no other cars there, in the middle of the day. Plus, it was one of the only places in the area that had decent pizza, so that just reinforces my suspision that it was a mob front of some kind.

Justtired

Rebecca is played by Ann Cusack, the sister of Joan and John Cusack.

clh35

Wait, are you trying to talk about it without talking about it in regards to Burnett?

Paul T Hewes

Episode 5 of season 2 is when I realized the Rhea Seahorn is a top notch actress. Her wordless reaction from getting kicked again by Howard was top notch.

Jeff K.

I'm talking about the fact that Carol Burnett is a professed massive fan of BB/BCS, and I had forgotten that they specifically referenced her? Because now I'm wondering if they referenced her intentionally because they knew she was a fan?

Monica Alarcon

The song that plays when Jimmy can't sleep is called Sleepwalk by Santo and Johnny (although it sounds a little off to me, might be a cover versión)

Actuarial Lurker

There was an EXCELLENT high-end Chinese restaurant near the UN in NYC in the 90s and early 200Os that I would eat at after work and my wife and I would eat at for upper scale dinner out with all the staff in Tuxedos etc. It mysteriously closed and was always half empty. I always suspected that it was somehow related to Chinese government wanting a "front" near the United Nations....

Actuarial Lurker

Simone: That is the SAME diner that Walt and Jesse eat at, that Jack and the Nazi gang hang out in after taking the Precursor from Declan after Lydia has the crew killed, where Gus and Mike meet after Jesse is tricked into thinking he is a hero in Season 4 as Mike's henchman etc

Actuarial Lurker

Yes we ALSO have Hector's back story too in BCS!

Tay Schumaker

Thanks for forever ruining South Pacific for me George

Actuarial Lurker

Yes- Hector sends the Twins to threaten Kaylee to twist Mike's arm- and he DOES NOT like that

It's interesting that we hear some background on Chuck and Jimmy's relationship-- we already knew about "Slippin' Jimmy", but now he apparently also took money from his father's cash register... We see Chuck dealing with such things since Jimmy's childhood. And yet, it's not as simple as saying Chuck simply had to deal with Jimmy's BS since the dawn of time. We also see, with Rebecca, meeting him for the first time, how charming Jimmy can be -- a great feature for a con artist, but also for an all-around good guy. Chuck himself says: Jimmy has a good heart. He has no reason to doubt that Jimmy's tears were sincere at their father's funeral. It's just that Jimmy... didn't think this would happen. Jimmy does one thing, and then he does another, and then another--and then he's honestly, sincerely surprised by the bad consequences. So--is Jimmy a bad but redeemable guy? I keep thinking so. If Chuck had believed in him... Jimmy can do good, and actually put a lot of effort in it--the way he took care of Chuck shows that conclusively. If Chuck had been more understanding, and better at making Jimmy aware of the bad stuff his actions created... I think something could have happened. But clearly, Chuck has a problem with not being as charming as Jimmy is. Chuck is ... an upstanding citizen, who really cherishes the law, with ideals of justice. Maybe that makes it a little difficult for him to see, or to admit, that he envies his little brother a little for his charm and charisma. Jimmy easily makes everybody have a good time. Chuck struggles to tell a simple joke. At some level, that's got to hurt. When judging Chuck, I always ask myself: how much does his decision not to support Jimmy come from his past experiences with Jimmy's stuff? And how much from his envying Jimmy's charm? How much comes from Chuck knowing Jimmy just does things without thinking about who he may be hurting -- and how much from knowing that people like Jimmy better than him? I honestly don't know. I think Chuck must be aware of both feelings; he's smart enough for that. But then Jimmy does give him reasons to be upset... so can Chuck fool himself into thinking it's all just because of Jimmy's BS? Maybe. Maybe not. I keep thinking of a different world, in which Chuck didn't "measure himself" against Jimmy's charm, but actually enjoyed it like others do, without losing his impartial viewpoint which let him see Jimmy's BS. He could have been a guide, a real role model, the ideal of an older brother who helps his younger brother evolve past his childish little schemes. But... he didn't. I don't think it's his fault--Chuck is human, and who among us has never envied someone else? Still, this story has a flawed hero--Jimmy--but also a flawed Gandalf, who failed to nurture the best in Jimmy, because he decided (too soon, I think) that Jimmy would never change. And therein lies the tragedy of the flawed relationship between these two brothers: you see how it could have been better. And that... just breaks my heart.

Da Big Appa

The cup holder scene gives me anxiety as an ex mechanic. The SRS (air bags) module is normally just below the cup holders in the center console. Hitting it with the lug wrench, liquid contamination from drips on it or extra bumping to it while driving can cause the air bags to go off. People in chat please don't do that or put your feet up on a dash in the passenger seat on any cars that have passenger side dash airbags, the result is bad if you get in a crash.

clh35

Ok, it seems like you may not be aware of a certain casting decision later in the series. I don't know if revealing future cast on an old show counts as a spoiler, so I'll just leave it at that.

Deadly Ramon

Emphasis on "apparently." The reactors know that there are often two sides to every story ;)

Jeff K.

And they commented on it, but man, the subtle physical performance from Patrick Fabian is so good, going from stern and robotic to smiling charm as he turns the corner… so good. Just so good.

I’ve never been asked to confirm I’m not a bot. I probably will for saying that though

myinniemademedoit

Hector’s backstory really has some legs to it once it gets off and running.

Adam Wetstein

This why Rhea Seehorn is centre of the series. Her acting Emmy worthy

clh35

Is that an inside joke or did you mean Emmy worthy? She was nominated twice for this role, rightfully losing to Julia Garner from Ozark in '22 and questionably losing to Jennifer Coolidge from The White Lotus in '23.

Adam Wetstein

Yes. Brain fart. I edit it thank you for the correction

Adam Wetstein

Put the feet up on the dash means you lose your feet if you rear end another car.

clh35

You mean the one Jimmy sang, saying the name like 8 times? :)

Śéáń

There was a furniture shop near a previous workplace that we were convinced was a front. Always fully stocked, but never seemed to be even open, let alone have customers. We just decided it was a front for the mob. A completely unspecified mob. I don't know if we even have a mob here.

Hunterrim

I’m the exact opposite when it comes to music. I’ve always listened to music while working, in fact I sometimes can’t work without music!

JBK405

What Kim is doing in episode five specifically is looking for "outside counsel" work for HHM. That is when somebody who already has in-house counsel (A lawyer who works directly for a company) hires a separate law firm to do additional work. Paige, the woman who came with the CEO for the meeting at HHM, is the in-house counsel for Mesa Verde. I'm not sure why Kim was looking for outside counsel work as opposed to any other kind of my work, but my theory (Only a theory) is that she wanted to bring in money NOW to show her value. A lawsuit like the Sandpiper Crossing case will have a big payday eventually, but that's probably years down the road. If you're outside counsel on retainer, then you're being paid constantly for all of the hours you put in every week. So she managed to snag a client to help "keep the lights on", and which SHOULD have been a big feather in her cap. The way Howard is treating Kim undeniably is wrong. In fact it's almost textbook retaliation, and if Kim did launch that lawsuit Jimmy was talking about I'd lay good odds that she'd win. I am in no way trying to defend his actions...but I do understand them. He's lashing out because he tried to do a good thing and it backfired on him, and he can't just accept that with equanimity. Again, I am not saying he's right, but he's...human.

Jeff K.

I'm such a basic bitch. Watched the episode with Rich ordering a Moscow Mule, went out, got some vodka and ginger beer and limes, and yes, now I'm enjoying a delicious Moscow Mule. Needless to say, it would not take much for Rich to convince me to go work for his firm.

Jeff K.

I was thinking, I grew up always listening to music while reading. For example, I'll never be able to hear the Moody Blues song "Question" without thinking of Treasure Island, because I listened to it basically on repeat when I was a kid reading that book. (My parents got me hooked on classic rock at a very early age; I'm about to be 44, so I'm not young, but yes, I was listening to the Moody Blues when I was like 10 because of them.)

Inkpendude

Same with music while reading, but mostly instrumentals that fit the mood of the book/chapter

Stephen Stone

I play video games while listening to Spotify... Just multiplayer games that I don't take super seriously.

Jesse Coombs

More musicals! South Pacific would be really fun, but really any classic Hollywood musical would be great. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I love 'em.

Adam Vialpando

I used to hate musicals since I thought they were dumb. Then someone pointed out how so many of my favorite movies (like South Park, Sweeney Todd, the Disney Renaissance films etc.) were musicals and I had no rebuttal. Then I found the YouTube channel Sideways which truly made me go "Wow, how did I ever say I disliked musicals?".

Adam Vialpando

To Jimmy his actions harm nobody. For Chuck Jimmy's actions ruin everybody. Like with all their problems the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

John Zelinka

I think Chuck would have been much happier if he could have just accepted Jimmy and enjoyed his wit and charisma and stop trying to compare himself, however that's not really the point. I disagree with all the people whose point is basically, "If Chuck would have just supported, mentored and nurtured Jimmy Jimmy would have turned out to be a good guy." Nooooo. Since the con man's speech in the Dad's store about wolves and lambs Jimmy has also chosen the selfish path and malicious or not has become a [moral] hurricane destroying as he goes ever since. Chuck saw his b.s. since early on and since Chuck was strung so tight AND held himself and others to such high standards he couldn't (wouldn't?) accept his brother's actions. Did Chuck accept his brother? I'll leave that to others. Jimmy accepted his brother though; that's clear despite their differences.

Jesse Coombs

I feel you. I didn't really start getting into musicals until I got older. Now they are some of my favorite movies. And if you think they can't go dark or get deep, that's just not true.

lisa

I lived across the street from an upscale toy shop front in nyc for 9 years. Never saw a single customer. Also my hometown has had one until this year—the town got too fancy for whomever to maintain the totally bleached out chip bags aesthetic

PostMan

To George's question about dining at an obvious front I have a story. I live in a small town and the local Chinese restaraunt in the 'downtown' is basically completely boarded up yet still 'open'. It is an open secret they run drugs out of there but they still serve food. It is pretty average but not bad. And the people are nice and are active in the local community.

Dan Holmes

this reaction is particularly great for some reason :)

Athenor

It was nice watching BCS with you guys see you next time :)

2026-09-09 01:00 Mark Margolis does a nice job as Salamanca (though his accent is questionable at best) but I wonder if a such a decidedly un-Hispanic actor would get such a role today (Margolis’ parents were Jewish).

I tend to disagree. Yes, the wolf-and-sheep guy did have a big influence on Jimmy, but that's not the only thing that ever happened to him that could have a significant influence. Chuck could have had an influence, too -- it's obvious Jimmy looked up to him, admired him, and wanted his approval. He put himself through law school to earn said approval. True, University of American Samoa (go land crabs!), but there's no evidence he didn't earn it by himself -- no buying exam results, no corruption, just Jimmy actually learning about the law. And I insist: Jimmy showed he can do good things that demand effort for a long time by simply taking care of Chuck so well and so thoroughly. This doesn't guarantee anything. Just like the wolf-and-sheep guy also didn't guarantee that Jimmy would be bad (I had a similar experience in my life, and I came out OK). Nothing is guaranteed. But neither is Jimmy's descent into Saul Goodman. There was a chance it could have been prevented. The raw material was there. Jimmy, like all of us, can be influenced by good things, and can make good choices. He can decide to feed his good instincts rather than his bad ones, and he can be shown by example how good the results can be. I'm sure there's an anti-Jimmy somewhere who avoided a life of crime despite comparable circumstances. Alas, Jimmy didn't. Consider also Mike. He became a dirty policeman because he thought he had no choice. He tried to convince his son to become one because he thought it would make his life easier and less risky. Alas, it backfired. Mike always seems to be making decisions based on what he thinks is best for his family -- and, down to his death in Breaking Bad, it consistently backfires. He ends up more and more involved in crime, doing worse and worse things at every corner of his path. But... was it unavoidable? Was Mike pre-determined to follow the path he chose? Was it in his nature? Is his judgment system, so wonderful when assessing the probability of surviving a conflict, not effective when thinking about life choices?... I don't think so either. Humans are complicated, multi-dimensional beings. Chuck didn't "cause" Saul Goodman. Chuck simply gave up on Jimmy too soon, and his efforts were often not appropriate. He was the sanctimonious type, who, when angry, would simply tell Jimmy what a bad brother he was. If you've had experience in dealing with people with problems -- alcohol, drugs, eating disorders -- then you probably know that telling them how weak they are is not the best way of making them change... Again, nothing is guaranteed. Even if Chuck had done everything right, Jimmy might have become Saul Goodman anyway. But since Chuck didn't do everything right... we'll never know.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Having music on while reading for work or school stuff never bothered me but having too much external stimuli while reading something for my own leisure gets to me. Maybe because it’s usually more story driven?

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Really hope they get to the 2nd Bill & Ted at some point, I’m among the camp that prefers it to the first.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Unfortunately for Simone, George might be onto something. If it’s an old Hollywood musical (haven’t seen it myself), it was probably made during Hays Code era censorship, but writers/directors got pretty clever on how to get lewd stuff in without actually saying/showing anything outright ;)

Big.Bad.Mr.Mustard

I think that depends on ones idea of "Hispanic". If we're talking Mexican or South Western US Mexican American, then his accent sounds way off. To me it sounds like he was trying to imitate a Central (Cuban?) or South American (Bolivian?) accent.

G P

Agreed that this likely wouldn't fly, but I think it works for him due to his 40+ year tenure of playing Latino gangsters

The boy who cried WTF

Noticed the "Ice Station Zebra" name on the cheque? That's the title of a movie!

Inkpendude

His spanish/accent was better than Gus at least lol

Inkpendude

That's what a bot would say

Rob Bob

I'm surprised that Rebecca is the lowest rated episode of the show. Granted, it's still at an 8.0/10 since this show is consistently amazing. I just think this is a very character focused, slow yet intentional episode.

PIG

Hello! I agree. What is your phone number?

Justin Leone

Huh, Carol Burnett exists in this universe? Interesting...

Ste Rawlings

Couple of Judgy McJudgersons during that first episode.

John Zelinka

...and one of my Top 20 movies of all time (Top five score of all time).

Angzarr

Perhaps "The Music Man", which George being a Simpsons fan might especially appreciate?

Angzarr

I have a friend who used to work near a jewelry store he was convinced was a front. It was only open 9-5 M-F, and would close down for weeks at a time around holidays as the owners went on vacation, missing all the prime gift shopping periods.

Justin Leone

They had to get creative with the episode titles in Season 2 because they were really committed to the easter egg of having the first letter from each episode make an anagram for... something.

gfixler

Man, I was so confused as to why Mike's face was smashed in. Was there an accident in a recent episode? It felt sort of right, at the edge of memory, but I couldn't place it. Same with Kim being sent down to the records office. What was I forgetting? I knew my memory was getting worse lately, but this was really bad. I might need to make an appointment with a specialist. I finally looked up an episode guide after watching all of episode 5, lightly confused the entire time, and realized I forgot to watch episodes 3 and 4 last week 😆

james repka

In S2E07 of Breaking Bad (titled Better Call Saul) he instructs Badger to have his parents send a Money Order for $4600 to "Ice Station Zebra Associates," his loan out.

james repka

This one was performed by Junior Brown, an actor and singer who has appeared and performed in Nashville, Friday Night Lights, and a bunch of other TV shows and movies.

james repka

I've heard her talk about this. She puts every bit as much work into scenes where she has no line as in speaking scenes.

james repka

I've been a fan of South Pacific since my teen years. That interpretation of the song had literally never occurred to me until George's dirty mind thought of it. I was on the floor!

I still can't believe Coolidge won. Her acting is terrible, people just bought into her shtick and gave her an award for being ridiculous. Rhea acted circles around her. Garner though, whew, that girl can act her ass off too.

Adam Wetstein

Many younger people hate because of the “glee club kids for they had at high school. Either to happy or too gay. But almost all the people in acting started their s way. My uncle is a Emmy winning producer and he said “ See the people playing stupid parts on Sitcom”. They have to lower their talent level to get apart. Most have great sining voices and many are great dancers”. EG kate Winslet or Christine Applegate

Methampheminist

Damn I just realised that when Howard told Chuck that Kim got Mesa Verde it was his way of pushing Chuck to ease up on Kim and to make the decision to take Kim out of the basement.

Redrum Sacrament

I think it's safe to say in Better Call Saul, everyone is back from the dead. Now you know how satisfying it was for Mike to kill the last brother in the hospital in season 3 of Breaking Bad. You two are the only ones who have ever called the brothers "cartoony." What the fuck?? lol. Not as cartoony as pineapple on pizza and calling it Hawaiian pizza lmao. I got goosebumps and excitement seeing those two again when watching this episode for the first time when it came out on tv.

KL

That would be a very good front. You don't need a lot of foot traffic to justify bringing in a lot of money in cash sales. You can also choose to funnel money abroad by buying fake diamonds from your own shell companies there. On paper, it would all look very legitimate. You have a store which makes a very good profit which is properly taxed and paid out to the owners, while also having a very good reason to send a lot of money abroad all the time.

vaguespirit

My interpretation was Howard is so used to having Chuck make him put down Jimmy that he was expecting Chuck to go along with him putting down Kim. Like he was looking for affirmation of his behavior towards Kim. Though I would have to agree that after their conversation, Chuck saw fit to pour oil on troubled waters but I wouldn't necessarily say Howard said all that in order for Chuck to do what he did. Howard is an equal partner so I don't see why he'd seek that from Chuck when he could get Kim out of doc review himself.

Sckmnky

I may be a "goodie two shoes" but I'd probably act like the intern, hopefully not as uppity but idk. I'm not going to risk losing my job bearing witness to bribes and incorrect filing practices. Rather than argue with him though, I'd just distance myself. Anyone who hangs around Jimmy for more than 10 minutes can see the way he does things often crosses the line of legality and impartialness regularly to get his way. or benefit his client. He's good at getting things done "his" way but the "by any means necessary" method unfortunately doesn't create the makings of a great, well-reputed lawyer. You eventually get caught up in something as we know happens and ultimately ruins his life. I think if he wasn't so confident in his finessing skills he'd have taken the time to fuse the two methods together to form a highly efficient yet legal way to do business instead of tight-rope walking on getting caught doing blatantly morally dubious stuff and flat out criminal behavior. I see his talent but he lacks a metered approach. It'll be interesting to see how this pattern of behavior keeps a stable, reliable (arguably boring) life just out of reach for him.

BobbyDigital

His lover? So wait, Gus was gay?? How did I not know this?

BobbyDigital

Speaking of Caroll. Thats Rhea Seahorn's chairactor's name on Pluribus. And everytime she calls the hive and gets the voice recording that says "Hello Carroll" Thats actually Howard Hamlins voice, and its a nod to Breaking Bad, when Walt comes back to the fenced up house, looking like the Unibomber, and his neighbor Carroll drops her groceries, and he says "Hello Carroll". Pretty cool. There is a ton of stuff like that in Pluribus. Really hope you guys react to it eventually. It's so good. Also in a grocery store you see in the frozen food section Los Pollos Hermonos and on a shelf there's 6 Packs of Hanks Schraderbrau. Lol
