This is also a Joss script.

Twisty Twitties

Oh boy, Not a fan of this one but ive oddly been looking forward to the reaction for it.

Arcade Sufi

Fun fact: Every ship in the alien films is named after Joseph Conrad book/character: Alien - Nostromo Aliens - Sulaco Alien 3 - Patna Alien: R - (I have no idea) Alien v Predator - Marlow

Daniel Dawson

I like this one but fully agree with George's ranking i.e., 2, 1, 3, 4. Looking forward to the prequel reactions!

SuPaTiLt

you should watch Gremlins 2 so you can see an even younger Tuco!

dudewheresmycar

Not a great movie but a necessary watch before Romulus.

paul rai

It’s not a *good* movie, but it’s so damn fun and entertaining in a schlocky, gross B-grade sci-fi level with impeccable production design and practical effects. I like every entry because every good or unique director applies their own visual aesthetic and personality into each film. By the time 3 came out I gave up on any of the films matching 1&2 and I think if you approach that mindset with the two prequels from Ridley Scott and Romulus there’s an immediate appreciation for how distinct and engaging they are. They’re not just prequels for the sake of themselves, but it feels Scott wanted to do more with the lure and universe than just pander to the fans. I like/love each entry in the franchise just their unique experimentation and exploration. Plus they look visually stunning and filled with great performances (you guys are gonna love Michael Fassbender in the two prequel films).

TomGas2025

If its damn fun and entertaining by definition it IS a good Movie.

I love this series and this movie while pretty bad is still somewhat entertaining. I'm glad the original model for the new Alien hybrid was rejected. It had large set of genitals for both sexes at the same time. I know unsettling is what they were aiming for, but that's too far.

paul rai

I think we all have our own varying definitions of what good is. For me, good-to-great are the first 2 films. And if I wanted to be extremely critical, this film is a mess on a script, performances, direction and tonal levels that I can’t compare it to 1 or 2 because it’s not in the same league. But if I choose to bypass those problems, I can have fun with the film, despite its glaring issues. That doesn’t make it good (for me), but I’d be lying if I wasn’t entertained on some level. There are movies that are not good by any personal metric of what I feel is good quality cinema, but they can still be entertaining in their own manner. It’s like junk food/fast food for movies. Not healthy or nutritious, but it looks and feels good in that quick gratification manner. Like any low-grade action, horror, or sci-fi movie.

ShōNuff3K

Dude was the baddie in The Crow.

Random Nevermind

After you've watched that one I cannot see why not to watch Shrek 3 and 4. They both so much better than this.

ShōNuff3K

Main scientist was the voice of Chucky

Arcade Sufi

Also wormtongue from lotr, he's also in exorcist 3 (great film) and he's in X-Files.

Michael

From what I heard, Sigourney actually made that behind-the-back shot without camera trickery.

pinkdino99

Correct. Took half a day of filming, but when she made it Ron Perlman broke character so they had to digitally cut shots together to remove him.

Helly R

This is pretty trashy, but I do think it's very fun. So I like all 4 for different reasons, though 1, 2 in different league.

Twisty Twitties

Agree i enjoy all the first 3, this one has its moments but overall isnt great i much prefer the prequels over this, Prometheus is severely underrated in my opinion.

Mike Jenson

It's hard to know where they were trying to go with this. It had potential but fell well short.

Morningstar

I really love this movie, even if it’s unpopular, it’s so much fun.🥂

Matt88g

Ron Perlman is a pretty great Batman in the game justice league heroes, he also played killer croc and clayface in the 90s Batman cartoons

Nathan Jasper

I don't understand why people say you have to see this one to understand Romulus...it takes place between one and two. Either way, strictly enjoy this one for Winona!

Twisty Twitties

Such an underrated actor, elevates any scene he is in

Michael Johnson

And the android names follow the alphabet. Ash Bishop Call David

Michael Johnson

Definitely the worst of the first 4, and maybe overall. That's not to say its a terrible movie. It has its moments.

Al Karnov

I disagree and my example would be a movies I loved Hobo with a Shotgun w/The late Great Rutger Hauer, or Bubba Ho-Tep 😁

Rob Church

I think George is crazy about the design of the hybrid, it's so good! It's that perfect uncanny mix of the two.

Al Karnov

Simone you are the greatest facial expression reactor in the galaxy!

JoeNotCharles

I think - like a lot of this movie - the hybrid makes a great visual, but a poor story. Simone is right, the sunken human eyes make it incredibly creepy. I love everything about the look of it, and it would be a GREAT monster on any other movie. But the climax of THIS movie needs to have something more dangerous than the standard alien, and by swapping out alien features for human ones the thing became more disturbing but less dangerous.

JoeNotCharles

I loved this movie - it's nowhere near as good as the first two, but well above the line that separates a good movie from a bad one. (For context, it came out the same year as The Fifth Element, Event Horizon and Starship Troopers, and I think it's better than the first two of those and maybe tied with Starship Troopers.) It had a lot of goofy parts and caricatures (what was the deal with Dan Hedaya? He's great in everything else I've seen him in, here he just didn't fit at all!) but the visuals were amazing, and it had a lot of individual scenes that stuck with me. Sigourney Weaver's acting was so good, and so was Brad Dourif's - wish he was in it more. In comparison, I barely remember Alien3. I've tried to re-watch it a bunch of times and keep getting bored and falling asleep. (I've never seen the Assembly Cut, though, just the theatrical version.)

JBK405

Simone, the way you smiled as you described how much you hated it was the highlight of the reaction. I think this film is the point in the franchise where characters became a bit too heavily steeped in near-worship of the Xenomorphs. Yes, Ash described it as "perfect" in the first film, but only in the sense that it was dangerous and capable. He didn't actually seem to revere it, he was just following his programming to bring it back alive. Same with Burke in "Aliens", who just saw a potential for money. But here it's verging on ACTUAL religious awe, with that one doctor almost happy to be killed by it. Plus even the non-worship fear of the creatures is super-high. Almost beyond reason. People talk as though a single alien landing anywhere on Earth will spell the inevitable doom of the entire planet. Whereas in the first film, basic corporate quarantine protocols would have prevented the deaths of the entire crew (Except Kane) if Ash hadn't deliberately overrode them. The crew may have also killed the alien itself after it emerged from Kane if Ash hadn't interfered with their efforts. It was definitely dangerous, but hardly an extinction-level event. In "Aliens" Newt managed to evade hundreds of prowling aliens for weeks all by herself, and the marine squad managed to kill dozens of them even when losing the overall battle. I don't want to dismiss the in-universe threat, but I don't see how they could conquer even present-day earth, let alone a future planet. There would be deaths in the region where they landed, but unless there were outside factors deliberately interfering with the response that would be where it would end. If you set a lion loose in my apartment complex I'll end up eaten, along with several of my neighbors, but eventually animal control will come and tranquilize it and it will all be over.

Lex Kuzma

Way better than Prometheus, though. Mostly because it had a coherent story.

Lex Kuzma

Except for this one, apparently, with Auriga.

Michael

Trashy and fun on a rewatch when expectations are tempered. This is definitely the most “comic book” of the franchise and even seems to borrow heavily in parts from the Dark Horse Aliens publication. Plus, despite some of the silliness, the director has a competent, off-beat visual style in keeping with his filmography.

Daniel Dawson

Yes I'd also rank the prequels between 3 and 4. Haven't seen Romulus yet.

Twisty Twitties

Same havent seen it but heard good things, need to watch before these guys manage to get a reaction out 😅

all_huggin_no_thuggin

“Can’t believe that tiny thing got sucked out of that little hole!” Ah, miss the old Saturdays in my local

rictus grin

not my favourite alien movie, i think it leans on the one liners a bit much, but i do think this is the one movie that shows off the eroticism of Giger's art

megamoo chilli

Agree with George's ranking the films 2134. But its more like - 2 and 1 are top quality absolute classics - then a very large distance below them - 3 and 4.

Michael Johnson

Prometheus might have been the most excited I've been to see a movie (along with Phantom Menace) Certainly did not live up to the hype, but Scott makes amazing looking sci-fi

Dan Holmes

I love this film, it's fucking weird, and that's why i love it. Please watch more Jean Pierre-Jeunet films! Delicatessen is Creeply for sure :)

Mark Polo

I personally think that Alien resurrection mainly just has a bad rep.. It certainly isn't as god as the first installments but, I do not find it as bad as most people seem to think that it is. I get more frustrated with Prometheus and Covenant as they take too many left turns and ends up making making the underlying lore for the franchise unnecessarily conveluted - Thank god for Romulus though! Can't wait till you guys get there!

Grumblefunk

Yep and he sorta fell of the map for a long time until Jordan Peele dug him up to costar in Nope

Matt O'Keefe

I saw this in the theater with some of my cousin. Sitting not far from us was a couple with 2 kids that looked under 10 years old.

Matthew Doherty

I agree George the hybrid did look goofy. I don't know why the filmmakers can't make a scary looking hybrid.

Kron0n

It's awful. Should have stopped at 3.

Redrum Sacrament

Someone should tell these Canadians they don't have to watch these shitty Alien movies just to watch the new one lol

Angela D. Mitchell

My alien movies rankings: Aliens, Alien, Alien: Resurrection. And Alien3 is simply sadistic -- if stylish -- garbage. So I'm with Simone on this one, and really disagree with you, George. I like this movie, think it's way better than 3 (which I just hate so much, ugh), and I thought the basketball scene was a terrific way to show us Ripley8's superhuman side and her sense of humor. I didn't mind the occasional sense of humor here and never found it intrusive or off-putting. Ripley was frequently quietly funny because she found the dark humor in her situation, and I liked that. I also am with Simone on the final creature, the "grandchild" human/alien hybrid. I found it disgusting but also weirdly beautiful because, as she pointed out, its eyes were occasionally so beautiful and innocent. It was such a nice touch to the creature design. I felt that you could see that this monster was a baby, you could see why Ripley felt love for it and yet also knew why it had to die. The creature killing the Queen (after a painful live birth -- not an egg birth, such a great detail!) was a nice subtle reminder that this new "child" was more human than alien, closer to Ripley and the Queen, and that was why it was so dangerous. So I'm probably in the minority on this, but I actually like this one. While I will always refuse to acknowledge the dreck that was Alien3, if this had to exist, I think it's a far better and more interesting movie in a lot of ways. Turning Ripley's feelings for the xenomorphs from those of disgust and horror into kinship and even love was such a fascinating progression for her character, and her clone being a hybrid was such a creative idea. I did think the crew of misfits was a little too assy to be believable, but they were all great actors, and the whole production, set, and creature designs were all fantastic -- not a surprise from this director. So this, for me, is that last Alien movie I liked. I thought Prometheus was staggeringly stupid and a waste of a cast of great actors bringing to life an absolutely terrible script. And I've always hated Alien3, which I just found too cruel and mean-spirited to ever forgive. For them to spit on the happy ending of Aliens like that? Just utterly cruel and unnecessary. Killing Newt and Hicks and making us watch their autopsies? JFC. It's like they took an Uzi to Dorothy after she escaped Oz. Nope. I would happily wipe the one time I saw Alien3 from my brain. It didn't help that it just felt like Fincher was trying way too hard to show us his flashy directorial tricks instead of just tell the story.
