Okay. This one is a bit silly but I'll watch it. Has some laughs and it has Winona...

Patrick Jackson

My girlfriend had not seen the Alien series until she was with me. She liked them until we got to this one. I have never seen her more angry at a movie. I thought she was going to kick my ass afterwards lol. She asked who was responsible for it, and when I told her it was a French director she asked why we've never nuked France. She was not a fan lol. Oddly enough this is probably the Alien movie I've seen the most because it was always on HBO during my chronic couch potato days in the late 90s. I don't hate it like she does, but it's certainly not what I'd call a *good* movie.

Ph4ZeD

Not the best movie if we are being honest but at least it’s silly nonsense with some good characters rather that too serious and bad

Marko T.

I like this movie. The hybrid alien is great too.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Long time since seeing this one, which was pretty much around its time of release on home video, but the newborn essentially getting shucked out like an oyster into space has goofily lived rent free in my head ever since lol. Keen to see how Prometheus and the rest will be received too 😀

Jeff I.

The first thing this movie makes me think of is when Sigourney Weaver said in an interview that the only reason she did this one was because she got paid a ton of money for it.

Basil Hazzard

I think you guys missed that Joss Whedon has a writers credit on this movie.

Arcade Sufi

Prometheus isn't a reboot, but I'll say no more.

Emptysea93

I am going to say something controversial, but I actually like this one more than 3. Don’t get me wrong it is super cheesy and several parts are just meh, but the idea of the company cloning Ripley, and the idea of alien / human hybrids were great ideas, the movie just had some terrible execution. Likewise Joss Whedons comedic writing style really doesn’t mesh well with the aliens. I feel if this was a darker and more serious film a lot of it would have been better, but the jokey writing and action movie direction got in the way. For instance, imagine how utterly terrifying the underwater scene would have been if it was dark and claustrophobic, without knowing where the aliens were… instead of focused on getting shitty cgi action shots of aliens swimming.

Spacedone

Amelie is a horror movie about a man whose gnome is stolen and is tortured with ransom photos.

Tsuyama

ive learned to watch their post movie discussions first before commenting. ill leave it at that lol.

Shonnicus

So I can tell the timeline of your move watch. Perhaps I'm wrong? You had to see this before Taxi Driver? The hidden pistol in the arm and Colonel heating shoe polish is directly from DeNiro.

Gregory Sambrano

Prometheus is very much connected to the new movie

JediLounger

This movie never made much sense, but it's just really gnarly and fun to watch. It was the first Alien movie I saw in theaters, so it holds a special place for me. You guys have already seen Prometheus so you know it's not a reboot, but I would call it a reset. Also if you thought this movie was gross, Alien: Covenant is wild.

Bbb K

I would say that this one very consciously embraces a campy b-movie style and I find it a lot of fun. I agree with George that the alien hybrid is weird and not in a good way. I understand that this is version 1 of the experimental birthing of a hybrid and thus still far from a desired outcome to the overall research but the director of the movie still chose to create that monstrosity and put it on film.

Monica Alarcon

Thank you for not skipping this one. I wanted to rewatch it for a while. And immediately after I'm gonna read Aliens: Original Sin. It's a novel that takes place where this movie left off...

Amos T Fairchild

Ah dang. The basketball thing was the best scene. lol. The end and the human alien was just a bit too weird. I didn't mind the jokes though.

REDR58

I don’t begrudge Weaver or any other actor for doing a movie just for a paycheck because there is no guarantee an actor will receive another payday like that in the future. Get paid!

Spacedone

Alien Resurrection is 70% an ok Alien movie (not a good one though) and the other 30% (Newborn onwards) is really really bad. That nose makes a ridiculous creature even more ridiculous.

CT

FYI, H.R. Giger's last name is pronounced like it rhymes with eager.

JakeToll

She actually made that last basketball shot & everyone was stoked on set.

Opti_Frog

Resurrection is such a blast! The funny bits are 100% intended to be funny, and there certainly is some tonal whiplash from time to time. This has never bothered me in the slightest. I'm from Europe and i like weird shit. 😄 George is right, the alien/human hybrid does not really work as a final showdown, because that's not what it is. It works on a thematic level, the hybrid being the other side of the coin to Ripley 8. Resurrection is silly and goofy, but never actually stupid. My Alien quadrilogy ranking: 1. Alien. Never topped, an almost perfect film. 2. Aliens. I have issues with some creative choices, but James Cameron knows how to craft a fine action flick. 3. Resurrection. The most over-the-top and hilarious characters of any Alien movie. I thoroughly enjoy it, flaws and all. The goopy gore is wonderful. 4. Alien 3. A big meh.

Mycenaeus .

So this movie is from the same director as "Delicatessen" (1991), and it has Ron Perlman from both "Cronos" (1993) and "The Name of the Rose" (1986), all very much worth watching.

Tom Hess

If you guys like Jean-Pierre Jeunet's visual style, I think you might like "The City of Lost Children" (1995). It's very odd, like all of Jeunet's films. But it's very good.

Monica Alarcon

I like this one more than Alien 3. For me it was fun so I can forgive the cheesy parts. I find Prometheus and Covenant boooring.

DM DC

I really enjoy this movie. Very fun reaction. I was hoping you'd be doing this one. So George I personally think that maybe you are too hung up on what the intent is. I don't think intent of the creators matters in the slightest. It's what the audience gets out of it, or interpreted from it, or how they react to it that matters. And it's going to be different for everyone. You never know some of the scenes you talk about from Seven may have been funny for some. Some are going to find some things disturbing while others may find them humourious. For this film, Simone found the Alien Hybrid (commonly referred to as the New Born) creepy while you found it silly. I myself thought it was a creepy design - does it scare me? No it doesn't; I have never been scared from any film. But there it is. Some people like you found it silly due to the human eyes, others found it more silly because of the nose. Even reasons for it being silly or goofy to some was due to different aspects of the design. I think the human eyes made it the creepiest myself. One thing I think that people overlook about the New Born is what it is. It's got much of the power of the xenomorphs but with human like perception. Remember Aliens when Ripley says: "I don't know which species is worse. You don't see them f*cking each other over for a GD perceptage." Now imagine blending the two. If Xenomorphs were like humans in their thoughts and desires they'd be a horrible plague on the world. In this film the New Born is what we get. I think the New Born would have posed an even greater threat to the people of earth than a standard xenomorph to be honest. And don't forget it is just a new born. If allowed to grow and mature, it may have been one of the worst things to walk the earth. Brad Dourif is that doctor (you called Grima Wormtoungue) just throwing that out, it triggers me when people don't refer to the actors/actresses by their actual name. Technically there is another "Alien" Movie, but it is after Prometheus. Covenant is actually titled Alien: Covenant. Then it will be Alien: Romulus.

Odd Thomas

It has some cool scenes - and Winona Ryder! - but the jokey tone just doesn't suit the franchise (and I like Joss Whedon). A much better Jean Pierre Jeunet movie is A Very Long Engagement, about WW1. Fun fact if you own the Alien Anthology blu-rays: they're glitchy af. They still play but you have to jump through some hoops.

REDR58

I’ve ripped all the discs from the Anthology Blu-ray set, all versions of all the movies with no problems? Are you playing via PlayStation? Some people have reported problems playing the discs on the PlayStation.

Harry Fieldson

Seeing the ending conflict scene and Simone burst out into uncontrollable laughter whilst George tries really hard not to puke was about what I hoped for when you guys watched this. I'm not going to lie - I prefer it to Alien3 purely based on how absolutely ridiculous and funny b-movie it is, what a wild film

REDR58

Brad Dourif played Piter De Vries in David Lynch’s Dune (1984) and Blue Velvet.

REDR58

It’s a little confusing, but there are only 2 versions of this film. There is the Theatrical Release, (which is the director’s preferred cut) at 109 minutes and the Extended or “Special” edition that is just over 7 minutes longer and just includes a different opening credits and a different ending, as well as some slightly changed or extended scenes throughout. The extended version was made to complement all of the other extended/special editions of the previous 3 movies in the “Alien Quadrilogy” DVD box set that was released in 2003.

howtocookazombie (Stan)

I don't care what some people say about this movie: I love it and it is one of the best alien movies in my opinion.

Monica Alarcon

Yeah, as always I try to get both versions ready to go. And the theatrical version is always the hardest to find...

Odd Thomas

You've barely scratched the surface of Brad Dourif. He's done so many iconic, weird characters. Child's Play, Body Parts, Halloween (2007-2009), Blue Velvet...

Shaka, When the Walls Fell

Tried to watch the full version I have in sync with this one, but there's so many differences I have to re-sync every few minutes. To the youtube version then...

Monica Alarcon

By the way. It's great how this doubles as Reaction Video and Cat ASMR...

REDR58

I don’t like Alien Resurrection and prefer Alien 3, but I don’t like Prometheus or Covenant at all. My biggest problem with them is they tried to explain way too much of the Alien “lore” and I find that rather tiresome. I don’t need everything explained to me. Sometimes I prefer ambiguity. But I suppose we will talk about that more when we get there with Simone and George.

michael denny

you guys should play alien isolation for halloween

Tim T—

Of course I had again the wrong version of the movie at first. (A whispered proposal: Unless otherwise instructed by you patreons, maybe simply take a look which version is top ranked on the usual sites and pick that. It makes life easier.)

Luc Zettwoog

For me, this is the strength of the Alien saga. Each film is so different from the last, this one is supposed to be full of dark humor, of course it's supposed to make you laugh, it is intentional ! I love it when the director is completely free to experiment with both staging and artistic direction. Jeunet is a man who likes to inject life into his films. He likes his weird looking characters who aren't just supermodels, who seem to have strong personalities. Of all his movies, I really warmly recommend "Delicatessen", "the City of lost children" and my favorite : “A very long engagement”, the most moving and beautiful after Amélie in my opinion.

Tim T—

(Update: It took four download tries with all my mighty Captain Jack Sparrow powers, but now I have a version that syncs.)

droodly

A side note, does anyone else have an issue where if you pick a movie from the collections tags, it loads but then quickly refreshes back to the front page?

Wrwemi

Deep down I know it's not a great movie, but it's the first Alien movie I saw, I was 11 and I had to sneak out at night to record it on VHS tape while my parents were asleep, so it will always have a place in my heart. Not for the best reasons, but it's #1 for me.

Tim T—

Simone: Some years ago one of the Soyuz spaceships on the ISS had a very small hole drilled into it. Astronaut Alexander Gerst was the first to put his thumb on it. He did not get sucked through. A vote for "Alien vs. Predator" as the next movie. It is not so bad – and it title says exactly what it does.

Chase Schleich

If only they'd kept the penis and vagina that it originally had (yes, the creature actually had both, fully visible, but it was removed). That would have saved it lol

FranciscoGios

This movie is not my top Alien movie, but does have more ups than downs. The New Born was designed to be Ripley’s real hybrid. The producers thought if this thing would had come out from Sigourney, the outcome would be of killing her. The creators wanted Ripley to be still alive during the whole film and at the end of the film be the hero of “saving humanity” and also because Sigourney was still famous back then. And I get it the New Born does look more hilarious than scary it does bring down more points, but you guys will see why different hybrids are always popping out.

Ian Tellam

Yeah I agree with George about the Joss Whedon moments, but on the whole I find the film interesting thanks mostly to its direction, slightly more so than the unfortunate Alien 3. (Big Fincher fan but that was a notorious mess of a movie.) I like the surrealism of the direction and feel of the film, and I find the newborn generally conceptually and visually creepy. It's cuteness is really because it's basically a small child - or at least half of one. Not as good as the first two, but a far more interesting movie than the profoundly disappointing and nonsensical Prometheus. I stopped bothering with Alien movies after that. At the time? I think the reactions were as mixed as they are now, in that it's a tonally uneven film with some interesting direction. Kind of a weird hybrid of its own of art house and blockbuster. I wouldn't rush to see it again, but rather like Simone I felt 'satisfied' after I came out of the cinema. I just take it on its own merits rather than try to compare it to the first 2.

Grumblefunk

I enjoy how wild this one gets with the gory action. Despite it being a weaker Alien sequel, the fact is at the time there weren't a lot of actual sfi-fi space horror films to choose from so we took what we got. Event Horizon (also 1997) is another I'd highly recommend, but the good and great space horror films are few and far between, so I'm very much looking forward to Prometheus and Covenant here.

REDR58

The jokes don’t particularly bother me, there really wasn’t too much of that at all. The basketball thing is just silly and hardly worth commenting on. My biggest problem with this movie is that it exists. I find it offensively bad for one reason: I simply cannot get past the utterly implausible and nonsensical concept of “genetic memory” (be it that of the xenomorphs or humans or anything) in a clone that somehow results in *any* sort of personality or memory from the previously incinerated Ripley transferring to the ones in this movie. I don’t care how much hand waving they do. Because short of magic, blood cells cannot possibly contain any memories—there are no neurons in blood cells and memories are not stored in DNA. I find it absurd that Ripley 8 is even able to speak, let alone do *anything* at all. Alien 3 for all of its faults is worlds better than this abomination. A few other minor points, the guards pointing guns at each other at start is supremely silly. Armed guards would never stand so close in such a confined space with their weapons aimed near each other. I suspect that was a 2001 Star Child reference when the first clone in the tube is shown. Michael Wincott who plays Frank Elgin, the captain of “The Betty,” was “Top Dollar,” the main antagonist in “The Crow.”

Jay Davis

Unlike Alien Cubed, I can understand the hate this one gets. Still, it can be a fun watch in the right mood... Hellboy, Lydia Deetz/Joyce Byers (or Veronica Sawyer if you're feeling obscure) and someone resembling Gwen DeMarco fighting Xenomorphs? Yeah. Sure. I've got not quite 2 hours for that.

SpankTheMonk

So I like Alien Resurrection but I know it is the weakest of the Sigourney Series. Take one shot of a French director that doesn’t speak English and an unrefined Joss that had enough experience to not have a check (Hence some of the cringe dialogue) and coming from comedy tv world. Strange mix. Joss states that the director didn’t get his comedy and was played too seriously/dark. But I think it is better to have not been what Firefly was- as that makes sense in its own, not for Alien. But I do think it is a unique and worth a watch film. So if you look at some of the details in Aliens and the films after the Xenomorphs seem to be able to alter their environment. So I can see how they could merge in a really freaky way. And I think some of the levity and humor does work. And I think it does help with letting us decompress from the really dark and freaky stuff like Ripley’s cloned sister still being alive and suffering.

SpankTheMonk

Oh and I liked the idea of Call being really human and vulnerable. A great contrast to all of the synthetics so far. Bishop was maybe kind and helpful but a bit creepy and distant. Still hoping you at least watch Alien vs Predator at some point, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. At least the first one, it has Blade’s mom in it! I think like Logan, Sigourney thought the ending for Ripley in Alien 3 was a wrap on her participation and she fought for David’s vision. Also Sigourney Weaver is, at least from some interviews, interested in the freaky bits of the Alien franchise. I think she really liked the freaky Alien biology sequences and her characters changes. Some of her interviews she talks about the sexuality of the xenomorphs and Geiger’s design ideas.

SpankTheMonk

As I not a biologist or a neuroscientist I can’t argue against what you state but I have read some about epi-genetic characteristics that seem to mimic genetic memory. So the idea or concept of evolutionary memory or behavior was conceptually an idea at the time of writing this story. I realize that everything is stretched for story and for the fiction.

SpankTheMonk

Such a cool quirky story- thanks for sharing. I loved being to young and sneaking to watch movies to scary for me.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Wanted to piggyback on this: “Mississippi Burning”, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, “The Exorcist 3”, & “Ragtime”. He’s fantastic!!

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

My headcanon is that the producers somehow confused Luc Besson with Jean-Pierre Jeunet as their ideal Frenchman for hire, but Besson was too busy making a different schlocky Sci-Fi at the time. But if intentional, it was an inspired and odd decision having him man the helms. A lot of this movie’s production background sounds like a classic clash of American and French sensibilities towards sex and violence, languages barriers certainly didn’t help the situation as Jeunet couldn’t speak English very well. Sigourney Weaver puts a respectable performance as Quasi-Ripley given yet another troubled Alien production, but I guess this wasn’t her first time waltzing in the dark. And then Joss Whedon ended up as the wild card to finish off our final product: interesting ideas, bad quips, and commendable direction and set work. All in all there are worse ways to kill 2 hours, speaking of which… what was the plan for Sunday’s movie?

Jacob King

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I don’t think I’d seen it in full since the year came out. Thematically it does build to Prometheus. If Resurrection isn’t part of your personal canon I can see Prometheus not working as well. The first Alien V Predator is skippable but not terrible it’s directed by Paul WS Anderson who also directed Resident Evil; watching Resurrection just now made me realise the Resident Evil franchise is 100% an Alien Resurrection clone. If you liked this then you should definitely give Resident Evil a chance.

rictus grin

Dominique Pinon the actor in the wheelchair is in a couple of great French movies well worth a watch, La Cité des Enfants Perdus (The City of Lost Children) and Delicatessen

David Lonewolf Wright

My ranking is 1, 2, 4, and then 3. I don't think 3 is bad at all, but I sort of hold a grudge as I was into the Aliens comic book from the 80's where it had Hicks and Newt. I find 4 just a fun romp and I am okay with that. I also really liked Christie played by Gary Dourdan. He was my favorite actor/character on the original CSI: Las Vegas. Michael Wincott does have a great voice. I think I first knew of him from Kevin Costner's Robin Hood movie, the original The Crow, and in Strange Days (I highly recommend giving this one a watch).

Swede for the table

I really love simone for liking this!! she had the same experiance i have with it! Ripley being cool creepy and almost scary, The newborn its absolutely terrifying, but also has human qualities that can make you feel empathy! Also the mix of absolute horror and some humor just works for me. Cool characters, maybe a couple of jokes too many. i could have done without it. But all the amazing physical effects are awesome! im also glad to hear simone stand up for her opinion against george that it works! You're awesome simone! Much respect.

Swede for the table

Hahaha also, creepy ripley aka "creeply" made me laugh so hard!

Cory Garron

This movie came out around my 17th birthday (give or take a couple of months, probably). I think it was the first Alien movie I saw in its entirety, and so I have a special affinity for this movie. EDIT: Also a Buffy/Angel fan. EDIT 2: This movie was also my introduction to Winona Ryder, and I still associate her with this movie. This was around the time she caught that shoplifting charge and this movie always reminds me of that.

Philipp Roensch

Nice that you mention the alien franchise going to genres, after horror, action and thriller we finally arrived at the comedies :D. But sincerely, the decisions about to get weirder from here, and not everything lands. They are doing the Jurassic Park thing of sequels needing more and more creatures variants, without rime or reason. This "final" creature is not even stronger, because "more perfect" makes no sense. It's not for me, but a good laugh.

Matthew Langley

God the writing in this movie was so bad lol. Possibly the worst ever, I forgot how bad it was. The writing had to have been written purposely bad. Guessing it was intended to be B rate funny, but it's mostly just bad TBH.

Trevor S Bright

Ok, Simone's gross-out laughter during the Newborn's death just made this movie for me. It was a chef's kiss of an already silly movie.
