Please check out Jlo and Vince Vaughn “The Cell” Or Ashton Kutchers “The Butterfly Effect” !

One theory is that the Engineers were disgusted with humanity and that’s why the one they woke up proceeded to kill them and tried to head to Earth.

Dwight Scarn

Gotta watch the classic vampire 80s flick Fright Night!!!!

Twisty Twitties

Really enjoyed prometheus its really underrated, not as good as Alien and i agree it could have benefited from a longer runtime and tying things up better, but its still interesting and visually stunning

Garrett Jay Christian

As you're now well aware, this wasn't really an Alien move; just a tangential exploration in the same universe that was supposed to kick off an semi-independent trilogy (hence the incomplete threads), but following this one's reception, Scott was pressured to conform more to the main Alien sequence.

MongoTheElder

I find this movie hard to watch. These are the least scientific scientists ever.

Ian Hunt

George shouting “Run sideways!” is a good recreation of me watching this in the cinema

Guthwulf

Tastes are different, i guess. I really wanted to like Prometheus and I'm a big fan of Ridley Scott (Blade Runner and Alien are two of my favorite movies of all times). Prometheus has a great cast, amazing set design and stunning visuals. I can see somebody enjoying it for just that. The idea could be interesting as well, but sadly the script is just terrible. So many badly written characters and plot points that make no sense. At least it gave us a lot of memes and its not as bad Alien Covenant. But Alien 1-4 are leagues above this one. Not sure about Alien vs Predator 2 (that one was pretty bad as well), but even the first Alien vs. Predator I would consider as a "better" (at least more entertaining) movie. Not sure why Ridley Scott thought this version of the movie could work (maybe he didn't care). I also think tying it to Alien with the Alien Prequel debate was a big mistake. Prometheus could've been its own thing. And its also a shame because you still can see the potential if it weren't for this script (or cut of the movie).

Twisty Twitties

Love the Butterfly Effect, Easily Kutchers best performance one of the few times he shows he can actually act.

John Wiese

I’m not certain if anyone has mentioned this, but I haven’t noticed any comments that pointed out that this was the ship that the crew entered in the first Alien movie. The pilot was the figure sitting with its chest burst open in the room where they discovered all the eggs. This movie directly precedes Alien, which is why it’s considered a prequel, but it didn’t actually feature a true xenomorph.

Twisty Twitties

Honestly Covenant is probably the reason i remembered this one so fondly, i couldnt get through Covenant on my first watch it was so boring. But yeah i do agree the writing isnt great, but it was entertaining. Prometheus is probably my mid movie of the Alien franchise with 1-3 above it and Ressurection, Covenant, Avp1 and 2 below it

Da Big Appa

My biggest problem with this movie and others is when because of bad writing the movie requires people to act uncharacteristically stupid for the plot to move forward. So many plot points had to start from people acting stupid for it to move forward. A zoologist approaching an alien with no common sense of his years of experience, scientists taking off their helmets in an unknown situation on a alien planet and running in a straight line from a falling object. I am normally VERY lenient of movies and just care if I enjoyed it or not but this one almost makes me mad with how much promise it had and great ideas that got ruined by bad writing. I feel like they could have got to all the same plot points with just a little more time and better writing and the movie could have been great.

Twisty Twitties

Im surprised George didnt pick up on it, i was waiting for that realisation when it showed the holographic shape of the ship underground.

Da Big Appa

Yep, you got it. It's a shot for shot of the first movie where they find the eggs.

Guthwulf

It's not "the" ship from Alien. It was "a" ship similar to the one they find in Alien. The one in Prometheus blows up and the engineer doesn't die in the "seat"... But yeah... I also waited for the "hey, that's from Alien!" moment.

Guthwulf

Written by Damon Lindelof who gave us the similar nonsensical ending of "Lost" (the TV show) :D And agreed...hard to watch because of the stupidity (you can still see the potential). Even more unbelievable is that Covenant manages to be even worse in that department.

DonkyDave

I find the worst is the angry guy who goes round screaming about rocks who has the mapping technology somehow gets lost?!

Guthwulf

That's the worst part of it... you can see how easily all this stupidity could've been avoided (or fixed) without even needing to much more time or money.

DonkyDave

We have to use theories because so little is properly explained in this film

DonkyDave

The problem with Ridley Scott is he's only as good as the script he's given. If you give him a bad script full of dumb characters and questions that aren't answered but with opportunities to make cool visuals, that's what he'll deliver. If it's a good script with good visuals, he'll make a banging movie.

Michael Nemo

Terrible script. Unnecessary link to Alien. Obvious loss in artistic direction from Scott. Just a mess imo.

Luc Zettwoog

Well no, it can't be the same ship as the first Alien. The engineer died outside the ship and without his helmet, not in his pilot's seat. It's the same type of ship yes, but it can't be the same one as on planet LV426. Am I wrong ?

Luc Zettwoog

I really don't agree. For me, those who say that are just trying to find an excuse to explain why it's normal for this movie to be disappointing. Literally, the first version of the script was called "ALIEN 0", and even if they wanted to make a film in a different genre set in the same universe, then why is there so much inconsistency with the Alien universe ? The much more advanced technology, even though it takes place before, the statue of the xenomorph, the engineers' ship. When your name is Ridley Scott, and you've directed masterpieces like "Blade Runner", "Gladiator" and the first "Alien" movie, you can tell any producer who wants to impose things on you to fuck off. The aim has always been to explain how xenomorphs were created and who the space jokey was. Ridley Scott has simply done it in the worst possible way, with the most strange explanations. But of course, all these shortcomings don't prevent the movie from being visually stunning and entertaining, I can admit that. And if you enjoyed this movie, good for you, truly.

John Wiese

You’re right that it’s probably a different ship and planet but isn’t that the planet that the weyland corporation sent the mining ship there probably because they knew about it from her. I found an image deadtalknews.com/2021/07/15/alien-1979-film-review/ that shows the same looking pilot

Stugotz

There were so many deleted scenes that answer so many questions, especially with the Engineer and his conversation with David and Weylan. I don't know why they would cut out such important exposition.

Morningstar

I know the flaws, but I still love this movie.🤷🏻‍♂️

Dirge Girl

Instead of Guillermo del Toro adapting H.P. Lovecraft's "At The Mountains of Madness"... we got this.

Dazzler & Em

I do enjoy this film but it definetly has its flaws. The reason given for the difference in technology between this ship and the one in the original film, is that one is just a mass produced cargo hauler and the other a state of the art exploration vessel. The planet featured in this film is in the same system as lv426 in the original film. I think in this film they land on lv266. The follow up I find very derivative but appreciate you following the films by release date and as always really enjoy your reactions. Can't wait for your reaction to Romulas, which for me is the best film since the original 2.

Dazzler & Em

It is also implied that the reason the engineers want to wipe us out is that we have not fulfilled our promise and they are disgusted by what humanity has become.

David Melo

The "squid monster" was a mutated sperm, let that sink in.

Luc Zettwoog

So, don't get me wrong, in Alien it's indeed an engineer ship, so it's the same technology, and the pilot looks like the one in Prometheus because he's wearing the same type of suit. BUT, it's not the same ship and it's not the same planet: it's LV223 in Prometheus and LV426 in Alien. The reason Weyland knows about the ship on LV426 in Alien is that they received a distress signal (which the crew of the Nostromo receive at the beginning of the film, and which turns out to be a warning rather than a distress message).

Corabal

Disappointed by this movie

Calvin Allen

It would have been nice for the movie to provide that information

Dazzler & Em

Absolutely agree, as George said in the reaction, so many things were left unclear because of the plans for a trilogy of films. 😁

Cinebinge

I'm disappointed by you

Corabal

Not faulting your decision to watch and react to it, glad you're open to films regardless of whether people like them or not

JBK405

I just find this film frustrating. You two mentioned some of my complaints and criticisms, and others in the comments have also gotten to them. But with the characters CAUSING problems with their stupidity -- as opposed to problems arising independently and them being unable to deal with them -- I can't let myself ENJOY it.

Dooly

This is a movie I came to like more after repeated viewings. It’s still a very frustrating film in general but it could have led to something interesting but then Alien Covenant happened.

DonkyDave

When does the film imply that at all… or are you referring to cut scenes/fan theories?

Maiki

That's not Simone and George. Just someone who wants to be "funny" i guess. So no worries. :)

Corabal

Ah, thanks

Dazzler & Em

If I remember right, I think there are some deleted scenes on the blue ray including one of the engineer speaking. I think there are some versions of it on you tube.

Dazzler & Em

It's entirely possible I'm having a brain fart and remembering it incorrectly but I seem to have a vague recollection of being disappointed that this scene wasn't included in the film.

Mark Polo

Yeh I remember that I kind of liked this movie when it came out, I was defending it when most people was trashing it.... But I actually rewatched the entire alien franchise leading up to the release of Romulus and I realized that I was actually wrong about it back then... Now I just feel like they're making the underlying lore of the Alien franchise unnecessarily conveluted with these 2 flicks - Covenant is a better film though, even if it still holds on to some of that problem 🤷

Anna Kyruin

I can't suspend disbelief in this movie that all the people in the movie are the biggest stupid possible to manifest.

Garrett Jay Christian

Just coasting on this tidbit from IMDB, not that it's infallible: "Was originally conceived as a prequel to Sir Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), but Scott announced his decision to turn it into an original film with Noomi Rapace (who was already set to star) still in the cast as one of five main characters. Some time later it was confirmed that while the movie would take place in the same universe as Alien and greatly reference that movie, it would mostly be an original movie and not a direct prequel."

YYZHawk

Yup, deleted scene that details the entire conversation between David and the Engineer.

Chase Schleich

If Ridley Scott didn't mess with the lore so much, these movies would be perceived much better. Having the space jockey be a suit (which really doesn't make sense when you look at it in Alien), the creator (being vague to avoid spoilers) thing in Covenant, and Prometheus technology being way ahead of the technology in Alien, just to name a few. That stuff pissed fans off and greatly damaged the film. Overall, if you don't know anything about the Alien films, you could probably watch these two prequels and think they're ok films, but very few people watched these without seeing at least one Alien film first.

Ludovic Ligot

This movie was so disappointing... Too many stupid characters and incoherences !

Andrew

I hold a major grudge against this movie, not only for being a pretty mediocre film, but also because it caused Guillermo del Toro to indefinitely postpone his "At The Mountains Of Madness" interpretation, which would have been fucking unbelievable. The concepts were too similar and he scrapped it, even though Prometheus did a terrible job of it. I want to see a del Toro Lovecraft film.

Kenneth thomas

They removed some pretty major stuff from this movie particularly when they encounter the Engineer near the end. There are some youtube vids that go over this missing content, and its baffling to me that they got rid of it. I still really like this movie though.

LighthouseGuy

I may have recommended these before but, to add to the pile, or if you want to watch a fantastic “British crime drama” like film. Sexy beast- is a great film starting: ray Winstone, Ian mcshane, Ben kingsley. 44 inch chest- is another great film starring Ray winstone, ian mcshane and john hurt. They are both definitely quite dark and intense so don’t know how they fair for how much you would have to cut, or monetisation purposes. But great films nonetheless and there are very few reactions to them. (I don’t know if thats because they aren’t well known, or because they get copyrighted)

Godrick

The ship in alien was just a mining rig, cheap pick up truck of space. This is an exploration ship looking for the origin of human life, funded by the worlds foremost rich person. Luckily the settings explain away why the tech looks more advanced without the script needing too

Rachel W

People are WAY too hard on this film and forget that the entire crew of Alien, except Ripley, were every bit as dumb as the Prometheus crew. Worse even because they knew their crew member had been face hugged by an alien and they fought to get him back on the ship. And I like that the film asked big questions and had the explanation be more than just blood thirsty mindless alien kills cause it's a horror film. I love the explanation that the xeno's were a biological weapon.

Tinfoilnation

I would make the argument people are not hard *enough* on this film. The Nostromo crew had an excuse: They were literally Space Truckers. They were neither trained nor prepared for such an encounter. Prometheus' crew doesn't have that excuse. With an unlimited budget funded by perhaps the wealthiest person in the world on a quest to find (literally) God should be assumed to be competent. But no. They're idiots. One of the first things they do is doff their environment suits - while walking on a planet with totally unknown pathogens. The guy that made and has the 3D map gets lost. The biologist terrified enough of an eons-dead corpse is brave enough to poke the face of a Space Cobra performing the most obvious threat display in the history of biology. A five year-old would have better survival instincts than that. Conveniently the android can read and speak a language no one has ever seen or heard before... and promptly decides to deliberately infect crewmembers with Black Goo. Why? Just to see what would happen? Idiotic decision making compounds idiotic scripting. This ship is supposedly crewed by the bestest and brightest yet their combined IQs probably hovers in the teens.

BzzBzzBzzBzzBzz

Anthropomorphicism is my biggest problem with this film, beyond the stupidity of the characters and poor script, is that it transforms the xenomorph, a fundamentally alien creature from who knows where, into just another human, android, creation. It shrunk the alien universe into a very boring human-centric universe. The engineers seem to just be more or less pompous humans, not very alien.

pinkdino99

Exact same problem Lucas faced by over explaining everything in his universe.

Darren Harrison

The characters in this movie all made stupid decisions. That's a problem with the movie because their decisions were illogical. Also, (like George) I don't understand why they would run in a straight line when being chased by a circular object.
