YAY! Been waiting so long for you guys to watch this

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

So glad I get to start my morning with this film. Noomi Rapace absolutely shines in this movie. Absolutely recommend Constellation, despite its cancellation, as Noomi is perfection in it as well as The Drop, Child 44, The Monitor (aka Babycall), The Secrets We Keep, Angel of Mine, Rupture, 2009 Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, The Trip, and Passion. Obvs huge crush on Noomi and huge fan of hers. So exciting! That operation scene was insane! Great choice for the thumbnail!

Odd Thomas

A great Ridley Scott movie to watch next is 'Matchstick Men'. One of his best imo. For more sci-fi I recommend, as always, Sunshine.

Sol-Edge

I heavily disliked this movie and its sequel

Mark Messer

The original script had so many more answers

Arcade Sufi

With the exception of the characters stupid decisions. I actually really like some of the ideas in the film.

Brandon

There are a lot of different videos on youtube about the original screenplay and it shows that David's conversation with the Engineer was both fully translated and a lot longer at one point. It's fascinating, but I kind of like that they ended up not subtitling it and you can let your imagination run wild. I always felt the Engineer despised the fact that their creation, originally intended for servitude, developed to the point that they could make a fully functional android in their image - also for the purpose of servitude. If they see humanity as less than them, David is even lesser despite his capabilities. Edit: After watching the movie again, I think I'd love to see the full scene as originally written back in the movie. Long story short, the Engineers detest mankind's endless cycle of war and violence and tried more than once to stop it. Christ was an Engineer, he was their final attempt at guiding mankind and his persecution is one of the reasons they want to wipe out their creation and start again. People have always gone on and on and on about how Noomi doesn't immediately run to the left or right when the ship falls out of the sky and how that makes this the worst movie ever. It's like a 2 minute scene and she does in fact roll to the side to get to safety. Like the endings to Lost and Game of Thrones and The Last Jedi there will always be some salty bro to chime in at length about his opinion until the end of time.

Logan Kerlee

This is going to be a fun watch! I've been looking forward to this one. :)

Alexrandom

I both enjoy watching this film and despise it at the same time. The whole religious aspect of this film is just plain dumb. The thing that makes me come out of this film the most is the character's behaviour. They're scientists and they act dumber than I would in that situation (and I'm pretty dumb..) Either it's poorly written or it's Ridley Scott's intention (in a way trying to say humans are dumb) and in either of those cases it pisses me off. So sad because it could have been a wonderful film. The photography is wonderful!

Crytek

The Prometheus school of running away from things, also there is some deleted scenes that are easily findable on YT that adds some needed depth and context. Overall I enjoyed this movie, it certainly has it's flaws but it really took some chances with expanding the universe & I can respect that.

Odd Thomas

A great Charlize Theron movie: Snow White and the Huntsman

Sir Jimmothy

You've now been inducted into the Prometheus School of Running Away from Things!

Spawncalibur

Might be just me but I feel Covenant is worse but helps Prometheus story making it a better film on second viewing. I hated this movie when it came out, not anymore. Has the most beautiful birth scene and Ive seen a lot... jk

Jasbro

I dont know if they noticed the Engineers ship was the ship that had the Xeno eggs inside from Alien/Aliens. David infected the scientist guy because Waylan wanted him to speed things up instead of waiting for them to run tests, so he just ran a live test instead, he probably just picked him because he'd made some snarky remarks on David not being a real person.

Ph4ZeD

Great reaction. This film has always left me very conflcted. It has stunning sets, visuals, setpieces and Shaw/David are really good characters. Unfortunately nearly all the other characters are total morons (the guy with the mapping system gets lost, the scientist whose dedicated his life to finding other life is drinking and bored as they look at the head of the engineer, taking off helmets, trying to play with an alien creature, so many other examples...), the plot doesn't really make sense (the black goo is a superior weapon to the aliens, why even use xenomorphs..) and the end of the film is stupid with Shaw and David's head going off alone to another planet.

Ethan Bevis

People have a love hate relationship with these movies, yes they are gorgeous, but a lot of stuff doesn't panout the way they anticipated. I think, after covenant you will understand it further but not all your questions will be answered. Unfortunately, George's guess that the studio intervened is 100% correct.

Logan Kerlee

Just got finished watching and the number of times I laughed because of Simone's fascination with those buttons.. xD hahaha, good stuff! I wrote a whole long thing but I scrapped that and I'm just going to put a short bit here instead. I liked this movie but it's NOT an Alien film and they knew that - afterall, look at the title. I went to see this in theaters expecting something more along the lines of that franchise. More action and a good bit less thoughtful dialogue - but instead I got this. Overall, I enjoyed the movie but it was still disappointing for me. Nothing tops Alien/Aliens those two are still my top favorites. Enjoyed watching George and Simone's takes on things, despite the button love. :P Another quality reaction! :D

Grand Moff Slackin'

I enjoyed this movie but I was sad to learn that so much Engineers lore was left in the edit bay trash bin.

Ph4ZeD

I will add that I do think this is a much better movie than Covenant which I just find crap

REDR58

There’s a little worse in a movie than having a character be so intensely stupid for no reason. More than one is unforgivable.

Luc Zettwoog

Well no, it can't be the same ship as the first Alien. The engineer died outside the ship and without his helmet, not in his pilot's seat. It's the same type of ship yes, but it can't be the same one as on planet LV426. Am I wrong ?

Ph4ZeD

My understanding was the Ridley Scott had total creative control of Prometheus and Alien Covenant

StrayConfusion

I remember there being a bunch of confusion and speculation around the release of this film. The studio made a concerted effort to distance the film from the Alien franchise in the marketing running up to release while simultaneously hinting at the connections. - This was Ridley Scott's triumphant return to the sci-fi / horror genre - Scott emphasized that Prometheus was a separate story with its own mythology while acknowledging that it shared DNA with the Alien universe - The Weyland corporation was mentioned in the marketing and comes from the Alien universe and has also been referenced in the Predator and Blade Runner franchises as part of a larger connected universe - The large humanoid aliens shown in marketing appear similar to the humanoid alien pilot on the derelict ship in Alien (1979) - The space tech appeared to be based on the same design aesthetic The generally accepted explanation for the studio's thought process for the marketing was that they hoped to bring in new viewers. Despite the connection to Alien becoming more apparent upon the films release, a large segment of the audience remained confused about the connection to the Alien franchise which hurt the film's box office performance.

Monica Alarcon

I had to remind myself that I'm here for the reactions, not for the movies. I had no intention to watch this one again but here we go. A lot bad choices made by the characters, a lot of bad science, unnecessary Xenomorph lore/origin, and why can't she run to the side??? And the next one is even worse...

E. D.

"The studio made a concerted effort to distance the film from the Alien franchise" which was dumb, normally they do the opposite. They didn´t bring much new viewers, I assume, instead they confused the Alien fans. The movie is visually great and has some good moments but other than that I don´t know what to think about it.

PureGonzo

Fun fact: Noomi Rapace is the actress who [brilliantly] played Lizbeth Salander in the Swedish film version of “The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo” (you guys recently watched the American version, which is also great). Presumably she started getting more roles in American films after the success of the Swedish film trilogy, which came out a year or so before Prometheus.

Vwlss Nvwls

I love the idea of this movie, but I feel like it was not carried out very well. However, I do love Noomi Rapace so that helped a lot. I have always loved how Noomi can be both strong and delicate at the same time.

Vwlss Nvwls

The way I view the tech looking better in this, a prequel, than in Alien is that this ship had more invested in it. The ship in Alien was just a mining ship, so it they would spend as little as possible on it. Also, he was dying his hair because he wanted to be more like Peter O'Toole. I think the Xenomorph at the end was supposed to be the Queen that Ripley fights in Aliens. Which is why it came out larger, that and who it came from. I am almost positive that the crashed ship is the one discovered in Alien, because the company knew something was there and that is why they gave Ash the commands to find out what was there and bring it back. And why the mining vessel was diverted to the planet.

Stupid people doing stupid things stupidly....in SPAAACE

j...

If you're doing Alien: Romulus, then I assume you'll also be doing other newer sequels to films you've seen before like Furiosa and Twisters? Maybe?

REDR58

The US Air Force still flies the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress heavy bomber (seen in “Dr. Strangelove”) which was first flown in 1952 and has been in service for more than 70 years. In contrast, the new and much more sophisticated Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider (a “flying wing” design similar to the B-2 Spirit) bomber is currently being developed, having flown for the first time just last year. Now granted, the B-52 has been upgraded and modernized over the decades, but the aircraft still generally looks the same as it did in the 1950s. And there are any number of similar examples with militaries and other organizations using old and new equipment like ships concurrently. The Russian Navy still operates a submarine rescue ship that was built from 1912-1913.

Michael Bourke

I've never walked out of a movie but Prometheus was the closest I've ever come when I went to see it in the theatre. Does not make a lick of sense.

Joanthan Skidmore

20th Century Studios made an advert on YouTube at the time "...Introducing David 8..." to sell the artificial person David 8 units with Michael Fassbender to promote the film... it's excellent.

Tim T—

My favourite thing about this movie is the Serenity-like spaceship. I do like a good spaceship.

Harry Fieldson

The reason the ship is far more advanced is because the original Alien crew are on a simple freighter - potentially even an old one in their timeline. This is a top of the line research vessel built for Weyland himself. I agree that it's a little weird though lol.

djKENTO

Love the themes explored in this film especially surrounding David. The most interesting character in the movie by miles. Creators looking for their creator…

Thomas Yanez

Can't argue with the negatives discussed, but I do wish they had at least re-watched their own "Alien" reaction, knowing this was a prequel, so that they'd pick up set/ship design that was straight out of "Alien" and would have informed things a little.

Thomas Yanez

Along with the edits that took out some of the Engineer's explanation/motivation, another thing that was originally planned and then didn't happen : Guy Pearce was in old-man makeup for exactly the reason Simone suggested : there were supposed to be flashbacks with him as a young man.

Brendan Rafferty

Jon Spaihts is a terrible writer… yet he is still given dumptruck loads of money to dumb down popular properties. Prometheus is a beautiful film, magnificently shot with incredible sets and costumes… but so stupid. Trillion dollar privately funded space expedition to go further than man has ever gone… and the crew is not briefed on their mission until they get there… and half of them act like conscripts who didn’t want to be there. Scientists: Hey let’s take off our helmets and breathe in this unfiltered untested alien air no man has ever breathed. Also scientists: Oooh… look at this weird organic matter everywhere. Let’s not put our helmets back on… and hey. I just found a weird aggressive snake like alien creature… how cute… let me poke its mouth with my finger for some reason because, as a scientist, i know that strange aggressive animals love when you encroach on their space and poke them The only positive in this film is the cool looking bright retro spacesuits with the bubble helmets they wore that look straight out of the cover of some 1950’s science fiction comicbook.

FranciscoGios

I also thought this movie had a lot of potential but missed a lot to tell the plot. The mural is of the god The First Deacon a non-violent god that the Engineers worshipped. Supposedly this Engineers were populating galaxies and had blood of this god to create different creatures, and us AND replenish their own race. Unfortunately (Here’s the part to destroy all human kind) over many millennia we killed one of their massenger, that massenger’s name is Jesus Christ; he was gonna teach us to see thru the 4th Dimension in which the Engineers can see. But before the crussifiction the Engineers had already replicate the First Deacon’s blood to keep recreation going in form of Black Goo. But this Black Goo in Prometheus was weaponized, they were able to extract one single gene, that gene being The Beast. The octopus like creature inside Shaw was a Trilobite & the thing coming out of one the Engineers was a Deacon.

Shane Driscoll

If you hate stupid characters doing stupid things stupidly, then you are going to pull out your hair when you watch Alien Covenant.

Paul Davey

Ridley Scott is using the Alien franchise as a front to push his religious beliefs. He revealed in an interview the reason the engineers wanted to destroy Earth is because they gave us Jesus and we murdered him. Once you know you can't unsee the religious narrative being pushed through this and especially Alien: Covenant.

Opti_Frog

I had really high hopes for Prometheus. I was very much looking forward to Ridley Scott's return to the Alien universe. But this film is what happens when you write a story about science and philosophy, but you only know Chariots of the Gods, an ancient aliens book published in 1968, written by a... scientist? No, a Swiss hotel manager. Oh, and you really want to push some surface level theology into the script as well. Character (and species) motivations are all over the place. Scientists are weirdly portrayed as the space truckers from the first Alien, because Damon Lindelof (or Jon Spaihts, who the fuck knows) really wanted that dynamic and drama and he probably didn't want to consult any actual scientists about his space fantasy. They might have told him that any real scientist wouldn't be stupid enough to remove their helmets in an alien environment they know next to nothing about. Or any number of idiotic things these scientists do in this ridiculous movie. Also, 99% of scientists don't use the term "Darwinism". You find irrefutable evidence of alien life, but you're soooo sad and boo-hoo disappointed because you don't get to talk to them. You approach a clearly hostile alien vagina-snake to pet it. And the first thing you inexplicably do with a severed alien head is to bring it back to "life" only to have it explode and... not matter anymore to the story in any way. And for fuck's sake, if the DNA was identical we would not be human, we would be the Engineers. I could go on. Alien 3 might be a depressing, boring mess, but Prometheus is stupid more or less start to finish.

SpankTheMonk

Oh you mentioned at the beginning about how enthusiastic the actors would be to work with Ridley coming back to the Alien franchise. Well the trailer was incredible and spawned a thematic element that would be copied by many trailers for years after. We were all excited at the potential, and then left confused and also let down a bit. Redlettermedia, as mentioned before on Star Trek TNG films, and the Star Wars prequels did a great skewering of this film. I like the film, I own it, I think it is beautifully imagined and has some interesting ideas. David is my favorite in this and Covenant, but it misses the mark in so many silly ways 🤷🍺. Oh! And How it Should Have Ended did an amazing bit on this too, David and his naughty 🐾. Also another film with, “travel via immolation” ☠️

SpankTheMonk

I believe chariots of the gods is an influence in there somewhere. I believe it is one of the well known pieces of literature that remark on ancient aliens 👽

Christopher Greenley

I can't believe you both didn't notice that lol. The Engineers ship is the same ship from the first Alien. That crashed on LV-426. That Kane, Dallas, and Lambert went into. The alien planet in Prometheus is LV-223. The vases are the precursor to the eggs and Zenomorphs. The Engineers want to wipe out and kill what they created. Humanity. The vases then eventually the eggs, and Zenomorphs. Were basically created as biological weapon. The big chair that looks like a gun. That comes out from the floor. That was in Alien as well. The dead body that Kane, Lambert, and Dallas found. That Dallas said was fossilized, and looks like it was growing out the chair. That was an Engineer. There was going to be one more prequel after Covenant. That eventually leads into the original Alien. That film might never be made.

SpankTheMonk

The amazing, disturbing and disgusting Med-POD scene for me is a close second to David, but I think most people comment it is their favorite scene/part in the movie. Simone has super spider sense with David 👏. Ok this is my deep cut suspicion, the Ladd Company logo theme from Blade Runner was morphed into this film’s theme and it is Promethian hot! So the script is a very frustrating thing for sure and it amplifies some of the dumb story ideas. But I just realized we are so close to an interactive cheaper version of the holodeck, like this version of old man Guy Pierce with Meta’s advanced high fidelity virtual selves - creepy.

Chase Schleich

You guys finally got to learn about the world famous "Prometheus school of running away from things."

REDR58

I may get into all the problems I have with this movie later but at the top of the list is whatever godforsaken accent that Idris Elba is using here.

3dbadboy1

I would strongly recommend you watch a (deleted?) scene where Peter Weyland gives a Ted Talk. Search 'prometheus' and 'ted talk' on youtube and find the longest running one. You want to see the WHOLE video, not just a segment. It is brilliant and I'm sorry it wasn't in the final cut.

REDR58

What I don’t ever need to see in an Alien or Alien-adjacent movie is anymore of the Weyland/Weyland-Yutani or any other evil megacorp wanting to use the Xenomorphs as *the ultimate bio-weapon* and / or “we can’t let this get back to Earth or everyone will die!” Those plotlines have been done to death after “Alien,” “Aliens,” “Alien 3,” “Alien Resurrection” and up to this point “Prometheus.” Never, ever, ever again. I don’t want to hear about it. Simone and George, the windstorm was a “Silica” particle storm, not metal. They mentioned that at least twice during the movie.

3dbadboy1

LOL, when he played the flute, I thought "I'm Popeye, the sailor man ..."

George Amberson

Just getting ready to watch your reaction and thought I'd dive into the comments first to see what the Alien franchise fandom had to say...and you guys have some opinions!

ShadowStunts

You guys should check out the movie Longlegs this halloween. It's a new horror movie, it's got nicholas cage in it and it's incredible

warcrimes

This movie falls apart in the third act and is not good but I still love it. For me the definition of a guilty pleasure. So close, Ridley.

3dbadboy1

FYI, Weyland was young in this clip so the aging might make a little more sense.

Matthew Blackwood

The Spaihts script is searchable online, called Alien: Engineers. It doesn’t have any of the idiotic scientist actions, so it’s a little better? Less memorable lol.

Matthew Blackwood

The scientists being morons isn’t in Spaihts’s script. You can find it online, it was still called Alien: Engineers at that point. Presumably Lindelof’s additions? Or maybe Scott idk.

REDR58

They should definitely watch that trilogy. It’s very good.

Drew

If I remember correctly, the “why” did they want to end humanity: They were setting their way to Earth 2000ish years ago. What happened on Earth around that time? Jesus Christ was one of them, and humans killed him. A representative of our makers. I recall this was a theory, not sure who it came from

Jacob King

Overly ambitious but I still enjoy the grotesquerie. I think Ridley Scott was more interested in the Freudian/gothic themes of origins and family than in making a science fiction movie. My read of the engineers is that they are doing the exact same thing Weyland is trying to do, create a biological weapon, and it destroys them. The characters go on a quest to meet their father/god and find something more primitive and violent than themselves. David is obviously the most interesting character because he knows his creators are less developed than him. Vickers’ speech about how the older generation needs to die so the younger ones can thrive is the theme of theme of the movie and we should be asking why did Ridley Scott come back to the franchise that launched his career to tell that story?

Khan1001

This movie had potential but disappointing in the end, too many ideas, the next one however, Alien Covenant is truly god awful, if George thought characters were dumb in this one wait till they watch Covenant! takes stupid to a whole other level.

Maxime

I want to love this movie just like I did when it came out, but I hate it no matter how many times I see it. (Next one is worse if you can believe it)

DM DC

So I don't know if Simone or George remember how things looked in Alien, but the "Engineer" when he sat in that device and was encased in that suit, is the same thing that was in Alien when the crew of the Nostromo came across the ship. The ship was also the same type. The "Space Jockey" as it was dubbed from Alien is that Engineer. This was one of my main issues with this film. It didn't tie in to the first movie like I expected. When I went into this film I knew it was a prequal. But it didn't really go to where I expected. Then there were the characters and some of the things that happened. Like Simone said those two guys that wanted to go back to the ship not getting the ship was just weird. Then there was what George had mentioned about them going right to the first alien thing they came across. It just made no sense at all. Neither did the motivations of the Engineers. Nothing about them made sense at all to me. I feel the idea of this movie had potential but it just really missed the mark as far as I'm concerned.

Philipp Roensch

Now I remember my review: "The least scientific mission ever!" Ridley had too many weird concepts he probably wanted to do for a while, exploring where the alien or humans come from is just the least interesting question, demystifying anything that could be alien. Then there is these dumb of characters, underutilized stars, technology that does not fit the language of the franchise anymore, all claustrophobia and tension is gone. Just gore-gimmicks and some impressive visuals. Glad you had some fun with it :D Yes, there are some callbacks - the Engineer navigator and his ship is the original breakout point from the first. And the design of the outpost/dome was actually a concept for the Harkonnen Palace done by Geiger for Jodorowsky's Dune.

James W.

This movie is bad because everyone in it was stupid. It is still a fun watch but unlike Alien or Aliens, everyone is just stupid and it doesn't remain even close to internally consistent. For as much as I love many of these actors, they could have cut down to like half the people and given them all more to do. Alien has a total of 7 people but they all have a part to play. In this, you know people are there just to be red shirts or to fill some fan service/trope that this series sort of established. The cool pilot, the evil android, the greedy corpo, the hot head who gets people killed, etc. I like the idea that the xenomorph isn't a real species unto itself, it is the Engineer's bio-weapon. Also the idea that humanity was just an experiment they tried out and abandoned. The "Engineers" weren't trying to uplift us, it seems that they basically used the earth as a bunch of donor cells to try stuff out and then move on to try elsewhere until they got the desired results. Charlie and Elizabeth's idea that it was a star map to lead them to their makers is just the existentialist crap that humans attach to everything in the search for structure and meaning to their existence. Also, ironic that in the original Alien movies Weyland-Yutani wants to capture the xenomorph to research technology for bio-weapons and such when the alien itself is the bio-weapon. You hurls some capsules of good at a planet you don't like and then just let it destroy that civilaization if they aren't sufficiently advanced to deal with it. Similar to the protomolecule in the Expanse.

Simone's Coconut Squire

I agree about everyone being stupid. There are a few movies out there like that that frustrate me to no end. You have one or more characters making the dumbest, most unrealistic decisions ever just so you can shoehorn conflict or suspense into your script.

Simone's Coconut Squire

One of the most ironic things about this movie is that one of the tag lines was "Questions will be answered" and it ended up leaving more questions than it answed.

Duncan

I never hated this one, theres some things i actually really like about it. but I watched before i ever watched any of the alien films (didnt even realise it was connected to Alien) so i never had that feeling that it didnt live up to a great franchise. Still its way better than covenant.. i never even finished that one
