Damn havent seen this one since it came out, cant remember if I liked it or not. Gonna have to do a rewatch with my favorite reactors I guess...

Carl Tunney

Would be nice to see what posters are being referenced! Excited either way to see this! My mom’s favorite movie!

Bon Wa

So I have now watched the reaction, and the one thing im taking from this one is that George has not seen the Avatar movies.

Mastervodo

I am SOOOO looking forward to this one with you guys!

nigel Macbug

film suggestion Rollerball (1975)

Raymond DeGraw

Enjoyed your reaction... I love this movie and can feel the 10% let down like George. It is a shame that this movie got caught in the time when Disney purchased Fox causing poor marketing and studio involvement. Also on a note... James Cameron owns all of Battle Angel Alita. He purchased it after the great success and money from Titanic.

Zoltán Bublos

2019 was a crazy year for me. A lot of film came out back then what I really liked: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Knives Out, Detective Pikachu, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman.....and Alita. Glad you are liked it. Unfortunately this movie was bombed in the box office, so the potential sequel was dropped. BUT...nowadays there is a little hope that the sequel might happen someday.

REDR58

I was one of the 3 other people in the world not to have seen the original “Avatar” and then when “Way of the Water” came out I decided I was finally going to catch up and watched for the first one along with another reactor channel. I got about 40 minutes in but for some reason, I find the design of the Na’vi extremely off-putting, unsettling, repellent and generally, an affront to the eye I turned it off. Perhaps if Simone and George watch those movies I might try again. Maybe…

AzraRillian

if I recall correctly, there was a sequel planned, but the acquisition of Fox by Disney made those plans fall behind, but I do think they've confirmed that it's now in production or pre-production.

Sir Jimmothy

Did someone say [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]?

Tony E Crumpton

Sad you guys didn't comment on how great Rosa Salazar is in the role of Alita and how much of her comes through beneath the CGI eyes. She's become one of my favorite actors, and you should see her puking up cats in the great NETFLIX horror show BRAND NEW CHERRY FLAVOR.

DM DC

Fun reaction. I had never seen this movie. I had heard some negative things about it. Though that wasn't why I hadn't seen it. Just one of those that got away from me. I really enjoyed this movie. I think I was initially turned off by the PG-13 rating but honestly it wasn't that bad. Actually kinda glad cause I got to tell ya the scene with the dog, is much more brutal in the anime. Yeah there is an anime. The title of the anime is Battle Angel Alita. I think it came out around 1993. It is a franchise which I think is why they made this as a setup for a franchise. I am thinking they intended to do more films but it could be this didn't do as well as expected. Live action anime remakes hadn't done that well. Though I gotta say this movie was really good. I would just say George to keep that in mind. I liked her eyes. I liked how she looked. I think they did a great job with her design.

REDR58

This will be a first time watch for me. When the trailers for came out for this movie in The Before Times, I said to a friend of mine that Salazar’s character’s eyes should have been slightly enlarged from scene to scene throughout the movie just for the hell of it so by the end of the movie her face is just two huge eyes. Sadly that doesn’t seem to have been done here.

Amos T Fairchild

Really looking forward to a sequel. It's been a while...

BJ Stephens

Eh, just because things weren't resolved doesn't stop it from being satisfying, at least for me. I would love to see another movie in the series, but if it doesn't happen I take what I can get. As for the look of Alita, she wasn't supposed to look completely human. The body/face she had aren't human. It's a robot that has a human facsimile, so it should look off. I believe the thing about the eyes actually has to do with the fact that she was a combat robot built to fight in space among other places and the larger eyes give her a better visual awareness of her surroundings.

If you guys are really into the cybernetic enhancement stuff, you should look into Ghost in the Shell. Add it to a sci-fi poll sometime. - Ghost in the Shell film (1995) - Ghost in the Shell 2 (2004) Advice: avoid the 2017 Scarlett Johansson US remake. Also for the first film, try to avoid the "2.0" re-release from 2008 if you can. Go theatrical. For the re-release they changed the animation, the dub, the color grading, everything.

BJ Stephens

I mean never say never, it took 36 years but we saw a sequel to Beetlejuice lol.

samuel Jakob

Always wanted to see this never got around to it, finally had a reason now, and I gotta say I did like it quite a lot. The whole romance thing didnt work for me tho, I dont know if it was the guy actor who just didnt work in that role for me, and his acting was quite weak imo, or if it was the writing, maybe both... also there were quite a few really cheesy moments that I didnt like, I think if they keep out the romance and focused more on other things this couldve been quite amazing. I just dont know, I did like it but I also didnt its kinda weird. Btw. as you mentioned at the end, I would love to see your reactions to the Avatar movies, I love the theme of them so much, not to mention they are just a visual feast.

Jayson Phillips

I rem watching the Anime in the 90's it was great story just well...90's graphics lol kind of like Akira, Sharin was the teen that played in Labyrinth and the black guy is supposed to have been the new Blade.

REDR58

The 2017 Ghost in the Shell looks great, but yeah it’s a mess.

Onno Smits

Totally forgot how I felt about this movie. 100% agree with everything you said at the end, George. When the movie ended I realized why I forgot my previous experience with this movie. The ending just makes it completely forgettable, which is sad because the designs and world-building was incredible. Totally agree with Simone, this has major Mistborn vibes. I wouldn't have noticed that if she hadn't pointed it out. 🤔

Christian Da Silva

I would love you guys to check The Cable Guy from Jim Carrey as well as Me, Myself & Irene also with Jim on it. They are hilarious!

CT

Adding a vote for you guys to watch both Avatar movies. Surprised you haven't seen them.

Harry Fieldson

I might make that battle bagel (vs cinnabons) tshirt design - would be funny

Odd Thomas

Please watch Sunshine.

I'm not a big reader so a lot of the films that are made that are based on source material I go into with a blind eye not knowing any of the lore and I almost always enjoy them unless there are glaring filmmaking flaws a la poor dialogue or inconsistent pacing. The Fellowship of the Ring did not have either of those flaws but having said that I will say that upon release of the Fellowship of the Ring the final act of that film felt very underwhelming and didn't leave me with anticipation for the sequels. It wasnt until the releases of The Two Towers and Return of the King that I understood and appreciated how FOTR setup everything. I say that to say this films final act left me underwhelmed as well, however unlike FOTR it did leave me with anticipation for the future planned sequels and disappointment later down the line when coming to the realization that said sequels will more than likely never be made. #ImNotMadImJustDisappointed

Morion Williams

That one fight scene was directly taken from the anime which is way before hellboy.

Ari Ramirez

A sequel (supposedly called Alita Avenging Angel) was confirmed on a few interviews, but this movie happened to come out just a couple of months before the pandemic, which slowed things down. The movie itself was very well received, so it might still happen at some point.

Odd Thomas

Well Rodriguez promised a sequel to Sin City and he did one... ten years later, so I feel there's still hope for Alita 2. It's one of those films that grew in popularity more on home video after the initial release. Another great RR film is Planet Terror.

Mastervodo

I feel there was a great opportunity missed at the end. "F*** your Trivia!" Because that scene was the highlight of the movie. Gives you chills and goosebumps!

Philipp Roensch

It is so sad, when not even James Cameron or Robert Rodriguez can get a sequel off the ground. I'm just hoping after Jimmy got all his Avatars out, he will come back to this passion project with all the spare money. Yeah, sometimes the creatives don't have the sway we hope for them to have. What I love though, almost everything about this movie :D The CG and designs are amazing. They were working in enough of the graphic novel to be good for fans, even if it got a bit more western coded. My only gripe really is only the bug basic teenie dialogue^^. But I'm impressed how much world building from several novels it gets done, without stopping to long for exposition, just wove it in quite nicely. Side note, the Avatar movies are fine, the first one just a 'Dances with wolves'/'Pocahontas' rethreading of tropes with tech demo, but from the second on, he got to let loose and tell his story more originally.

dys

Underrated movie. Yes some of the worldbuilding is pretty silly, and I didn't care about the romance or the motorball at all, but Rosa Salazar really carries this. The CGI on her is threading a really fine line with the uncanny valley but it works.

djKENTO

This movie was a bomb. Nobody saw this in theaters in America. 180mil budget and it made like 90 in the US, if that. James Cameron promised a sequel, but with the shake up at FOX getting by purchased by Disney and Cameron going to work on Avatar 2, and Robert Rodriguez working on Mando and Book of Boba Fett and Covid, the sequel has been put on the back burner. The idea that they’d shoot three movies on a little known graphic novel and anime OVA is bananas. Nobody knows what this is. No studio in their right mind would greenlight that, and with Covid, there’s no promise it’d even get finished with delays.

Persnickity

Simone is my battle angel. Less battle more angel.

windyWin

I remember when I was younger (in my early 20s I think) being real amped to hear that all these anime/manga was gonna get a hollywood treatment, and then years later being disappointed at what the output was. This movie was the only one I liked out of the anime/manga adaptations, is a lot of fun even though the ending is disappointing, and the dialogue is a little cheesy (I don't mind cheesy dialogue in fighting scenes.). I had an obsession with Desperado (1995) and Once Upon A Time In Mexico when I was younger, the work that Robert had done that I was really familiar with. It was cool to see a director like Robert Rodriguez team up with a blockbuster director like James Cameron.

Ken

Cameron confirmed last year that they are working on Battle Angel 2

Donna Castellano

Trust me, Simone, I know exactly how you felt at the part with the dog. I was just glad one of the other bounty hunters got off his ass to help her. Because of the dog.

HansD

The CGI eye thing... I feel like they could have just cast Ella Purnell.

HansD

A worldwide total of $405 million though. It's Robert Rodriguez's highest-grossing film to date.

REDR58

Hopefully it doesn’t take years to get to the finished movie.

REDR58

This was a first time viewing for me. “Battle Angel” is a very awkward name and the way they coined it during the race was rather ham-fisted. I get it, but I didn’t like it. I mostly found Alita’s eyes distracting, if not unsettling. From certain angles her face looked really disturbing and it only reinforced the dislike I have for the Massive Anime Eye Style. I don’t like it and therefore find any Anime that has it rather off-putting (generally speaking, though there are some exceptions). Seeing it in “live action” here was all the more freakish. I really wish the filmmakers had just concentrated on her body looking the way it did, with its robotics/cyborg appearance (it was very well done) and not mess with the eyes. More along the lines of what was do e with Scarlet Johansson in her “Ghost in the Shell” movie. Whatever the reasons in-universe are for the big eyes, I just didn’t care for it. I did very much like the character however and thought Rosa Salazar did a nice job. Much of the dialogue was clunky and poorly written though, but Salazar and some of the other actors managed to rise above that. I don’t understand why Alita is waiting to go up to Zalem. Clearly there seems little to be able to stop her from continuing up the pipes, either from the outside or as Simone suggested, simply cutting through the outer casing and then making her way in and up. She didn’t need to wait around winning Motorball races!

Chase Schleich

I really like this movie, but I've always said that I wasn't sure if you should bother watching it because it ends before the story is over. They'll never do a sequel so the first film is pointless. It's been 5 years now and James Cameron claims to be working on sequels, but he moves extremely slowly and Avatar is taking up all his time so I just don't ever see it happening. Look at how long the sequel to Avatar took him to do. The lead actress will be in her 60's before a sequel ever gets off the ground.

Jacob King

I joked that you should watch Jupiter Ascending when this came up in the poll but you guys should absolutely watch Jupiter Ascending. I feel like Disney/Marvel have borrowed some superficial elements from this movie particularly with Captain Marvel. When you get to Romulus, there’s a whole trope that this movie handles with ease that Romulus struggles to make believable.

Funk McPuke

Idk. I honestly believe there will be a sequel and, to some degree, they're working on it. It may not have done amazing box office in the US but China LOVES James Cameron and sci-fi is having a huge moment there, meaning fairly guaranteed profits for any studio investing their bucks. Also, given how much news has surrounded the "Alita Army's" efforts to get a sequel made and how much the increasingly legendary "will they?/won't they?" can be used by their marketing department to drum up pre-release curiosity in the uninitiated/casual follower and excited buzz among the Alita faithful, I can't see them not going forward with it and releasing within the next couple of years. I mean, for all we know, they're already working on it in earnest. They don't announce that stuff (or "leak" it) until they're ready to capitalize on the buzz bc you don't want to rev up that momentum too early and then lose it by the time the movie comes out. And given how long that many FX shots take to produce, that can be a long pre-production and post-production process. I've seen suggestions that it could be released in 2025. Tbh, I don't see that happening unless it's secretly been in production for at least a year or two. I've also seen 2026, and you know what? I think that's entirely possible, especially if they started really diving into pre-production when Cameron reconfirmed it in 2023. Either way, as involved a producer as Cameron is, he's not the director. A lot of people cite Avatar as the reason Alita is/could be getting pushed back but that's just people on the internet guessing. Robert Rodriguez could easily be working on it with Cameron dipping his fingers into both productions. The loss of John Landau may be a complicating factor there, but it's not impossible that Alita is gearing up alongside the Avatars going full blast. As for Rosa Salazar aging out, they're already CG-ing her face pretty heavily in the movie and Cameron is always on the bleeding edge of face-capture + CG stuff. They can make her look however they want to make her look onscreen. I mean, Zoe Saldana isn't a tall, skinny, blue alien with feline features, yet that doesn't stop her from playing one in Avatar.

Grumblefunk

for some reason I really enjoy this movie and would dig a sequel. I'm a bit surprised how much the eyes offend people, I'm not at all familiar with the source material but I'm glad nothing about the girl was sexualized because it does feel like a cartoon movie for kids, much like Rodriguez's other kid movies.

Funk McPuke

I like James Cameron movies but the "bug basic teenie dialogue" is something I dislike about many of them. Some are better than others but there are times when he makes creative decisions and I'm like, "Really? 'Unobtainium' is the best you could come up with? You don't wanna maybe brainstorm for another couple of minutes?" or "Really? Titanic is unironically going hard on the trope of the love interest's current SO being a complete, moustache-twirling dick instead of modernizing it with some gray areas?" Cameron swings back and forth between stuff that's brilliant and stuff that feels like he farmed it out to a high school kid trying his hand at screenwriting for the first time. It's honestly a little weird. As for Cameron and Rodriguez not being able to get an Alita sequel off the ground, I don't think that's true. Cameron, at this point, could get any movie made that he wanted to. No studio's going to say no to James Cameron. If there's any issue at all -- and that's assuming an Alita sequel isn't at least in pre-production as we speak -- it's probably that he's a producer who's more involved in his projects than an average producer and he's filled his plate to overflowing with Avatars. He seems pretty keen on making an Alita sequel though and, tbh, I wouldn't be surprised to see one in 2026-ish.

REDR58

Speaking of Jupiter Ascending and the Wachowskis, I would also recommend “Speed Racer” from 2008. It’s a crazy movie but very enjoyable.

Trevor S Bright

To counter George's argument for a proper conclusion at the end...Lord of the Rings already had a huge fanbase (that did get much bigger after the movies), while Battle Angel Alita isn't as well known a manga as stuff like Dragon Ball. So having just 1 movie was to dip their toes in the water, see if there was a potential new fanbase.

Gary Fixler

Looking forward to you two watching more T&A films from James Cameron.
