mojo shivers

Growing up we called it a frisbee too. In fact, when they came out with glow in the dark frisbees I feel like they were trying to copy Tron. But for me the light cycles were the coolest part of the world inside the computer. I wanted a light cycle when I grow up but sadly they still don’t make those. Lol

Pam Nail

Except at Disney World (and Shanghai Disneyland).

Mike Medaugh

I pumped so many quarters into this game back in the mid 80's. I had the vinyl album also. This is pure nostalgia for me and I hope you both enjoy it.

If you'd like to know what the computer- & software-business was in the 80s, you need to watch "Halt and Catch Fire" - an amazing TV series about the early days of the personal computer revolution. As for "Klaatu barada nikto" - that's a nod to one of the most (rightfully) famous classic sci-fi movies: "The Day The Earth Stood Still" - ver much worth watching. Constantly referenced in lots of popular culture, as well :) Regarding "programs will start thinking and people will stop" and George's comment of this being "really forward-thinking": In a sense, I think this is just another incarnation of "making things easier makes people lazy and unmotivated to develop their own faculties", which is a criticism that's as old as technology itself - and also related to every generation's complaints about the younger generations making things too easy for themselves. It's a criticism that's been voiced in particular against every form of information-technology, claiming that people will lose their ability to think for themselves (this was said of reading, too, when books became common). Of course we have to be careful not to fall into the cognitive trap of concluding that just because technophobic criticism has always been voiced, that there can be elements of truth to that - and that there can't be dangerous dynamics promoted by certain aspects of how technology, culture, and politics intersect.

ShōNuff3K

To tell you what this means, would be a massive spoiler for a different movie that you should watch. "Klaatu barada nikto"

ShōNuff3K

The original, not the remake.

Mike Medaugh

Also around the 11 min mark the poster you saw was from the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" movie. Highly recommend it great 50's sci-fi. They did a remake with Keanu Reeves sometime around 2010 which I didn't like as much

Elroy

Tron legacy in my opinion should be watched next such a good movie and even better soundtrack

Leon2788

Pls watch Tron legacy

Daniel Smith

They can quite happily avoid the remake

Derek McCasky

The “way back machine” is from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show with Peabody and Sherman

Derek McCasky

They probably recognize it from Army of Darkness though from Bruce Campbell forgetting the words

Sarahnade

Huh today I learned Jeff Bridges was in Tron

dudewheresmycar

Its also referenced in Army of Darkness which they've watched previously.

algi

Bruce Boxleitner is such a great actor and except of a handful of amazing roles he gets just terrible B-movies.

Data Cable

Easy way to spot fake movie typing: They never touch the spacebar George's guess about using reflective material for the colored lines was spot on... but only for the Encom chopper. The red lines were actually retro-reflective tape laid out on the hull and rotors, lit by a red light from the camera chopper. All the "computer world" characters were shot in B&W against a black background, with black tape lines on their costumes. Each frame was enlarged on high-contrast film in negative (therefore white lines on black suits against a white background), and edges were hand-inked. These were then used as mattes to define the colored lines. It was such a labor-intensive process that no film was or will ever be done that way again.

Michelle Lyons

I seem to be in the minority in preferring the original to Tron Legacy.

REDR58

And there are only 15 minutes of pure CG visual effects in the movies everything else was hand-drawn animation or painted / drawn background plates.

Reiji Kobayashi

After a bit of googling, I now know that touchscreen keyboards were invented in 1962 - which quite honestly blows my mind. However, I would like to point out that MCP is also capable of complex voice input (parsing sentences that contain abstract concepts and unvoiced threats), composing and voicing sentences that sound human-generated, and otherwise exhibiting intelligence that thumbs its nose at the Turing Test. My head canon is that computers in 80s TV and films, despite their primitive UI, are the product of an alternative timeline in which Skynet may or may not have been involved.

Mike FromOz

For those who know the movie, the flying robot machines are very much a reference to the robot 'Maximilian' from Disney's 1979 movie "The Black Hole".

JBK405

I'm so happy to see you both appreciate the special effects. A lot of people come away with faint praise that recognizes it was good then but cheesy now, and they don't really FEEL how game-changing the effects were. "Tron Legacy" is unfortunately quite a step down in my opinion. I know a lot of people seem to like it, but the story is disappointing and the effects -- though decent -- weren't revolutionary like this film. So it just feels unnecessary. The one area where "Legacy" really shone was in the soundtrack. I always felt the TRUE sequel to this film was the mid-'90s TV series "ReBoot". Likewise taking place within a computer world, it was the very first all-CGI TV series. Its story was actually REALLY well developed and it was absolutely filled with references and jokes to computer technology and pop-culture history. I still re-watch it on a regular basis. It would never win a poll and I doubt it will ever appear on the channel, but you should check out "ReBoot" on your own for just being a fantastic show.

Mike FromOz

The character Dr. Walter Gibbs & Dumont (the program stuck in the chair) was played by Barnard Hughes, who played the grandfather in "The Lost Boys", which is a movie you should DEFINITELY watch, if only for the greased up sax guy.

Mike FromOz

Agreed about "Tron: Legacy". "Tron" feels like them using special effects to tell a story, whereas "Tron: Legacy" feels like a partial story being used to showcase special effects. It's not as good as the original, despite having a great soundtrack.

Data Cable

Quite true. The rendering was done on the most advanced supercomputers of the time, and was STILL glacially slow. The reason the MCP players were in blue bikes instead of red is, the rendering had to start early in the production, and the MCP characters were originally intended to be colored blue. But it was decided to change that to red at some point later in the production. Since the rendering process was so slow (and probably expensive), they just used that footage as-is.

Like it’s a car dealership? I mean—I wanted one to purchase, “Here are the keys, sir,” and drive on the freeway. Gods, I would hate having to go to anything Disney to test drive one. Unless they let you just take it for spin out of the parking lot.

apoc

Wouldn’t be the first time a “technology” company overengineered making orange juice.

Brian Sittler

I’m right there with you. But I used to watch this almost every day as a kid in the early 80s. So the nostalgia is off the charts for me. But I say the light cycle scenes from the original still hold up beautifully .

Brian Sittler

Watched this so many times growing up in the early 80s. This was a cornerstone of the early Disney channel on cable. Also had a light cycle toy that was one of my favorites for a while.

Zinphad

The Wayback Machine was a time machine used by Mr Peabody (a dog) and his boy Sherman to learn about history in the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Kind of a prototype Doc and Marty. The website took it's name from this.

Zinphad

Klaatu barada nikto was a line from the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still, but you would be familiar with it from the movie Army of Darkness where they stole the line and used it as the magic words Ash has trouble remembering.

Rob Church

"They don't really FEEL how game-changing the effects were." Probably because they weren't actually that game changing? The impact of Trons visual effects is VASTLY overrated.

Kron0n

Tron 2: Daft Punk Boogaloo.

REDR58

Also, the Light Cycles have a more detailed front end and a relatively less detailed rear end because it was using too much memory to make the models more complicated!

Jordan Aiken

Touchscreen technology was invented in the 1960's I believe.

Niklas Ericsson

I am very happy seeing you guys watch this and I really hope you give Tron: Legacy a chance as well. It's even better, IMO.

Bob Steger

Growing up in the 80's I loved this movie since I was a kid. I spend endless hours playing Tron and Discs of Tron at the arcade. You absolutely have to watch Tron Legacy. The plot is a little contrived, but they raise more interesting philosophical questions and the sets, costumes, and CGI are worth it alone.

Mikeo8575

Watched this at a friends 8th birthday party in 1982 or 83, whenever it was first released on VHS, and it completely blew our minds. Most of us had very limited to no experience with computers at all.

Tcrimson05T

I don't care what anybody says Tron legacy is underrated. Absolutely gorgeous. And one of the best scores to ever companion a movie

Tcrimson05T

No I do as well. It's not that I think Tron is worse I just think Tron legacy is a very entertaining movie. And it's so freaking pretty 😩

Muir Lyman

Agree with the Daft Punk score. So amazing.

Muir Lyman

they're also 3 species of alien humanoid who work as Jabba's skiff guards in Return Of The Jedi.

James W.

I saw this in 82, or close enough as to make me feel very old, and it was amazing back then. Even though the effects are very dated it is one of the few movies from my childhood that hasn't lost it's magic. Really happy you guys not only enjoyed it, but GOT it. I know none of the themes are super subtle but I am always surprised and disappointed many folks are seeing it for the first time are very reductive in their views of it. I believe it went crazy overbudget and didn't make a lot of money for Disney but for GenXer's like me, it was really a big deal. I have no doubt this movie is why I am a lifelong gamer but also why I went into tech. I wish I could be as cool as Flynn, Alan, Cindy, or Barnard or their programmatic doppelgangers. Many films that came after like the Matrix and Wreck It Ralph are riffing on the same themes but I still think Tron probably did it the best and 20-ish years earlier. Tron Legacy is good, but I think it squandered some chances to expand upon some of the themes introduced in this film. It is a banger. The visuals and soundtrack/score are amazing and contrary to some folks opinion, even my own at the time, it is actually a solid sequel. I am hyped for "Tron: Ares" next year as it looks like a good follow up to Legacy. If you have the time, I recommend the animated series "Tron: Uprising" It was a really good show. It only got one season and deserved more but I think is more successful at world building "The Grid" and the life of Programs that Legacy. It is kind of how the Clone Wars cartoon did a better job of fleshing out the Star Wars prequels than the movies. I think it is meant bridge Tron to Tron:Legacy but I feel like watching it after Legacy is just as good.

Lachlan Caldwell

Another great example of 80's special effect brilliance is 'Flight of the Navigator' (1986). Pretty sure parts of that movie inspired/influenced the T-1000 morphing capabilities in Terminator 2, five years later.

nossieboy

And an awesome soundtrack by the great Alan Silvestri! The credit sequence is incredible with the city skylines. Great film :D

Caitlyn Natalie

This movie really was ahead of its time in many ways. The soundtrack was composed by synth pioneer Wendy Carlos, a trans woman.

AVATAR-X

Captain Disillusion has a great video on the VFX of "Flight of the Navigator", including how much (or little) of the scenes were done using CGI. https://youtu.be/tyixMpuGEL8

AVATAR-X

Now that you've watched Tron (1982) you should watch "The Last Starfighter" (1984), the next movie to heavily use CGI in a theatrical motion picture. Also of note, "Young Sherlock Holmes" (1985) included a short scene with the first CGI "character" created in-house by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM).

Andrew

Hey y'all, I wanted to throw out a movie suggestion. CODA from 2021. It won best picture in 2022.

Rachel W

A great sci i Jeff Bridges film is "Starman", 1984.

Keith Brown

KLAATU BARADA NIKTO- Please watch the original 1951 movie classic THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (Don't watch the remake) and a lot of you questions will be answered.

Trevor S Bright

It's also in Army of Darkness. Ash had trouble remembering Nikto.

Shawn B

So, CGI then was like AI now?

Trevor S Bright

I kinda wish the thumbnail was Simone and George in "program" costumes. But I guess the laser is good too. It's original at least.

algi

No, all the companies embrace AI today and no artist wants to use it. It's the opposite.

JoeNotCharles

Agree about the score, but disagree about the visuals. Tron went to a lot of work to make practical neon lights look fake to blend with the animated parts. Legacy went to just as much work to make the animated parts look like real neon lights, which is missing the point. Technically impressive but completely sterile.

Theadora

I came here to tell them not to worry, George did not in fact summon a demon to eat the earth when he said that. :-)

TokyoLopez

If y’all can watch this, y’all can watch hot wheels world race
