Oooooh shnizzle, work is going to be good for 1:35:47+ today, with their asides and adorableness

Amos T Fairchild

This is a bit dated, but loved it when it came out. The sequel Tron Legacy is one of my faves for the soundtrack.

Big MCD

You gotta watch the sequel too, it's worth it for the soundtrack alone!

Young Blood Priest

The way back machine is a reference to a 60s cartoon called Mr. Peabody.

Bbb K

For my part, I wonder if the fact that human cultures tend to visualize dragons as collectors of all the things we find most valuable reveals a deep-seated horror of our own desires, horror in the face of the emptiness at the heart of all desires. The monster lurking in the dark cave perhaps symbolizes fear of what our desires might move us to do and to become.

Odd Thomas

A good Jeff Bridges movie to watch is Starman

Jay Davis

That's funny. I just had a conversation a few days ago with a family member who didn't get the "Gort, Klaatu Barada Nikto" reference. Guess we have to add that movie to the wish list?

Jay Davis

One of my favorite 80s flicks. The TV series was kind of fun too as a mid kid.

Monica Alarcon

You are watching this after decades of CGI in movies, television, videogames and even commercials but I remember a very young me watching this in the theater In a double feature with 101 Dalmatians and being amazed as I was watching something I've never seen before. Tron was truly a pioneer for it's extensive use of computer animation.

AzraRillian

I remember back in the 90’s, the local mall in a nearby city had an electronics store that for a few weeks had a light cycle VR game, with physical bikes and big clunky helmets hanging down from the roof. Also, George you stated you hoped there was a game like this, and there are a couple of Tron video games, one of which is Tron 2.0, a fps rpg following Alan’s son. The game is sadly difficult to get to run properly on modern systems

Mike FromOz

Agreed. I saw this as a kid and it was mind blowing. We were just entering the personal computer revolution, and the idea that you could enter into the computer to be a part of the game was dream material to all us kids. The amount of times my friends and I played 'lightbike' running games at recess... Ahh, good times.

G P

I DESIRE POPCORN NECKLACES

Gary Fixler

Yep, my little boy brain was boggled. There was nothing like it back then. It was as big a deal as the dinosaurs were later in Jurassic Park.

Gary Fixler

I bought EL wire and white foam sheets in various thicknesses to create a Tron costume for Halloween 20 years ago, but later decided there was no way I was going to pull it off without looking like another Tron Guy (look him up, Family Guy also parodied him), who got famous for an actually cool costume, but he was a big guy, like me, and that was all anyone noticed back then. I went as an AT-AT Walker instead.

Reiji Kobayashi

I love the visual aesthetics of the computer world. I get the vibe that the structures are all polygons and textures with no substance underneath. Recognizers (the staple/Chinatown gates/stompy thing) are clearly held together with coding and pure logic. The laws of physics exist - sort of - but it's the bare minimum programmers could be bothered to put in. To me, the sequel has a slightly different feel in that the objects are simulations which would actually work if real world physics got tweaked - which, IMO, mirrors the direction that a lot of game design has gone in the intervening thirty years. I love the way both of them look, just in their own different ways.

REDR58

Speaking of textures and polygons, if you look carefully at any views of Sark’s carrier or any other large CG object that passes behind or in front of another large object, you can see a dim wire frame.

Gary Fixler

There's not nearly enough smoke in that arcade for early 82. Atari was like that back then, too. Everyone was drunk, high, and smoking. It was a bit Wolf of Wall Street, by all accounts. A bunch of young people who couldn't believe how big it all got so quickly.

Gary Fixler

Nerds from the 80s get excited about the toy Flynn plays with in his above-arcade office. It's Mattel Football, which is so bad by today's standards, but was one of the exciting toys back then. There are remakes now, still available. https://www.handheldmuseum.com/Mattel/FB.htm

Rupert Purcat

Awesome - Legacy please as well.

Spacedone

Enjoying George spotting all the cultural references to this movie that he didn't realise he knew.

G P

Also, KQ5 and 6 are timeless classics

Spacedone

Tron being disqualified for the Oscar because they didn't understand a new technology being used for it is much like Andy Serkis getting overlooked for his acting because the Academy couldn't look past Gollum being a CGI character.

Joel the Human

Definitely watch Tron:Legacy, it amps up the cyber punk vibes to the max and the soundtrack is amazing!

Gary Fixler

When I was a kid, I saved up my money for a long time, and had maybe $70, and then we took a trip to Disney World, and I blew all of it in the first shop. I couldn't believe "Industrial Light & Magic: The Art of Special Effects" (1987, about the time we went on the trip, I'd guess) existed, and I had to have it. Then I had to lug it all around the park for the whole day, and it's ridiculously heavy. I also have the sequel, which I found years later, which goes to into the digital side of ILM's history, at least up to when that book was published. It's only a few paragraphs over a couple of pages, but I uploaded them if anyone is interested. It talks about "The Pixar" and image storage issues of the day. https://photos.app.goo.gl/gUHz1FwQyh9DDeMG8

Gary Fixler

While it was a dark room with reflective stuff, it was also a MASSIVE undertaking, where every frame was blown up as a transparency, and hand painted. It took a lot of people months of meticulous work. The academy thought computers did it all, and so didn't give it the effects Oscar. https://intelligentcollector.com/remembering-tron-the-movie-that-transformed-cinema-forever/ > The film was shot on 70mm on a set with an entirely black backdrop, and its actors (Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Cindy Morgan, David Warner, Barnard Hughes) dressed in white costumes. Then the footage was “dismantled,” as Lisberger once said, so that every frame could be animated by hand – just like every Walt Disney classic before it. Even more artists would fill in the blanks, shining light through the mattes to make them glow. Airbrush artists made that light appear to blur, rendering the unreal somehow more real. The process was painstakingly laborious: It took months to finish scenes that could be completed today in a single afternoon. As Looper explained in its “Untold Truth of Tron,” the light cycles “were actually animated … using 75,000 frames of ‘special animation cels’ called Kodaliths. These Kodalith animations contained every single piece of information about how characters, sets, and motion would eventually look, and were a huge feat to maintain organized.” Scheele says that “all the touch-up work you’d do today with Photoshop was done with airbrushes on an enlarged cel. The brilliance of the Disney method was they enlarged everything to such a large cel size you could work on it by hand. To have people really work on something – and a group who are obsessive weird people – you have to bring it up to a size you can work on. Watching those pictures go from black-and-white to color was an amazing experience: There was brilliant, pure color that glowed, that had depth. It was a truly illustrated world.” As Scheele likes to say, they didn’t call it “computer-generated” back then. It was, instead, computer-simulated. Maybe that’s why, all these years later, it can be challenging to get your head and arms around Tron, which – in the shorthand – was made using seemingly every animation technique that had come before and every computer trick that came after. "

REDR58

Listen to the filmmakers’ commentary for a lot of discussion of how this movie was made.

REDR58

So all of the computer-generated visual effects were recorded by aiming a camera at high-resolution monitors displaying the CG visuals.

REDR58

Cindy Morgan, who played Lora/Yori in this movie, the woman with the large eyes and who has the quite memorable role in Caddyshack sadly died just this past December.

Gary Fixler

The score was done by Wendy Carlos, who also scored A Clockwork Orange and The Shining. She did a lot of early work with synths and Moogs, and has a bunch of studio albums, too.

Gary Fixler

I also heard somewhere along the way that the film didn't come back all looking the same from the developer, and there are color jumps in the computer world sections, and they had no time to fix it, so they just added crackling noises at the color jumps, so it looked intentional. I can't prove this statement, because I can't find where I heard it. Similarly, I heard that it was such a last minute job finishing it up, that film was delivered to theaters still a bit wet from development, but again, can't prove it.

Donna Castellano

Please watch TRON: Legacy and the criminally underrated, canceled too soon TRON:Uprising cartoon series.

mky

George, you noticed the printout Alan has on his cubicle wall that says, "GORT, KLAATU BARADA NIKTO". This is a line from the 1951 sci-fi classic, "The Day the Earth Stood Still". I shan't give you more context than that (no spoilers). This phrase is famous among hardcore sci-fi/film nerds, and references pop-up occasionally. For example, Sam Raimi/Bruce Campbell use "Klaatu Barada Nikto" to great effect in "Army of Darkness" (1992). Cheers!

John

This was fun, this might be better viewed off line but I recommend a netflix documentary about video games called High Score

Michael Seaney

Great film. I remember going to see this in the last year at school. Screen wasn’t full either, a shame. I thought it was amazing at the time, having on just got a Spectrum computer. There was a mother and two children sitting next to me in the screen. When the movie finished and they got up I heard the mother say to the kids “what the hell was all that about, I didn’t get any of it!’ 😂 It was a little way over some people’s head.

REDR58

I really don’t understand that. It’s a pretty simple story and very efficiently told. Oh well. It’s one of my favorites from when I was a kid. The first time I saw it was a rented videotape!

REDR58

Wendy Carlos, the composer of the music in “Tron” also composed the score for “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining.” She was instrumental (hah!) in popularizing synthesized music and won 3 Grammy Awards. I think the score for Tron is quite good as well. The 2 songs by Journey that are heard in the arcade and over the end credits are “Only Solutions” and “1990s Theme”: https://youtu.be/YwM9EAEUvA0?si=AXIeJNKxYUmotFvT https://youtu.be/NxztxglUxK4?si=j7AWRnzrVIa2uSD6

Ari Ramirez

Glad to see you enjoyed it! Definitely watch the sequel, and pay special attention to the sets, as most of it was filmed in Vancouver. Also, it's not VR but there's a really good FPS game called Tron 2.0 which is a (now non-canon) sequel to the movie.

REDR58

One final comment for me about this, George the set inside the laser lab is a real place. It is the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and at the time this was the first movie to ever film inside of there. The huge external door is also real, and the laser seen in the movie is basically the real “SHIVA” laser which existed at the time. The laser was a huge instrument, and it was composed of many pieces of equipment over multiple levels: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiva_laser Much of the animation was done by Cuckoos' Nest Studio in Taiwan, which still exists under a different name today. And the credits for the animators can be seen in Chinese characters at the end of the movie (at the 2:42 mark): https://youtu.be/N5SVWMmdAOU?feature=shared

David Lonewolf Wright

No wonder they call him The Big Lebowski... I believe I was playing the Tron arcade game and the Commadore 64 version before I saw the movie. I kind of feel like they came up with the game concept and then built a movie around some of those concepts... I probably should listen to the cometary. I also recommend Tron: Legacy. The updated game world is pretty awesome and the sound track is mind blowing.

Luc Zettwoog

if you want to watch a good explanation of how they made this film, watch the Corridor Crew video they did on it, but after watching Tron Legacy since they go back over the two movies to compare them too. Also I would really recommend the mini animated series Tron Uprising wich is very underrated but also the video game Tron 2.0 released in 2003 where you can explore the OG tron universe and was at the time the only sequel we got of Tron 1982.

djKENTO

My homie Lee's dad is Bruce Box Leitner, aka TRON. I might send him this reaction when It's on youtube.

Farbod

Please do Tron Legacy. Love that one.

Funny That

Better than George seeking out a "careful" making of doc, and no one would ever regret getting to chat with Mr Bearleitner... a real gent.

Funny That

Could make a sort of club night reaction for Tron Legacy. It is noticeable that Simone and George do enjoy improtu dancing in movies... do they want to share their flare. Anyway, cheers for this one.

Michael Kemmet

For fans of the classic sci-fi series Babylon 5, there are two main cast alums in here. The obvious one is Bruce Boxleitner as Alan/Tron, but Peter Jurasik is also in here as Crom - the compound interest program that Ram meets in the prison cell and that Flynn fights in the arena. Of course there's also David Warner, but he just played a guest character in one episode.

Matt88g

Disney did a tron animated series and it starred Frodo actor Elijah Wood.

djKENTO

The Way Back Machine is named after a time machine on the old Rocky & Bullwinkle spin off cartoon Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Time travel show about a genius talking dog and his son Sherman. Yes a genius dog and his human son. There was a big CGI movie remake of the show a few years ago with a pretty great cast.

Grumblefunk

I have distinct memories of the Tron arcade game, you could walk into any arcade back then and instantly recognize the unique sound FX from a light-cycle match going on somewhere within.

FranciscoGios

I was unfortunately for not watching this in theaters. But I did went when Tron Legacy came out and the sound track of Tron Legacy with loud speakers, now that’s Daft Punk at its finest!! One of my old time favorite electronic bands.

Skyruff

Never heard of Bruce Boxleitner? Kids these days...

Matthew G

This movie inspired several console games. The best IMO was Tron Deadly Discs.

Logan Kerlee

Love how blind you both are with this movie! I imagined that George had some type of background info with this one. This movie's fantastic! I'm really hoping that you'll both enjoy this one. :) lmao. "No, frisbee's good." Games back in '82 were crazy dated! This is going to be fun! :) It's been a few years since I've watched this, so I'm very excited to be watching this with you guys! :) That is a young Jeff Bridges! Good eye, George. :) This movie is INCREDIBLE looking for it's day and age. :) Yeah, dude! :D This movie is the originator for all of that! They definitely used some interesting and innovative methods for this movie. He does look sort of like Clark Kent! :D Nerd is right! I love that line! "More bugs than a bait store!" Flynn's cool as hell. :) Arcades were flipping awesome back in the day! I legit miss hanging out in them. :) Do you guys not see the sweaty pits that he has? lmao, they're drenched! :) It's inspired by this, yeah! lmao, I'm sorta surprised that you didn't recognize that quote George! I mean, you're not super nerdy or whatever but still! "KLatu Berada Nikto" Klaatu Verata stops demons. Klaatu Barada stops robots. This is referenced in another movie that I'm not sure if you both have seen - The Evil Dead. IT'S A TON OF FUN TO WATCH! I'd love to see a reaction for it if ya'll haven't watched it before. I'm not sure where they filmed this. I'm very happy with how you both are reacting to this! Makes me feel VERY happy! :) Ready Player One was VERY much inspired by this. 100% George! This movie takes place in this program and it doesn't feel old or overdone. I'm a big fan of it! I love the noise that the security drones make! lmao, this movie will make you feel bad for doing that - yeah.:P Watching Behind the Scenes is a lot of fun for this movie. :) I loved learning how they went about everything. :) RIP RAM :( LOL, George that was hilarious! xD I burst into laughter after you said that! hahahahaha lmao, good job George! That slips by most people. lol, cool that you know that Binary is just 1's and 0's. lmao, they 100% are Simone! I believe that this is the first, yeah. At least first film to illustrate this in this sort of way. 100% George! Yeah, this movie's excellent in that the average person would be clueless upon just hearing those words but when used in context they make sense! :) The way they presented many of the things in this was done very well. Love how you're seeing all of this Simone! :) Not expecting anything modern and allowing yourself to be wowed even though things in this are clearly dated. Makes me feel happy! :) Glad that you made that connection George! Smooching programs! :) Had a great time watching along, today! Stoked that you both enjoyed this so much. I'm VERY much looking forward to you both watching the sequel! It's a definite shift from this but not in an entirely bad way. I may've missed this in theaters but I went to see the others and they were SO MUCH FUN! But hey, I only missed this because I wasn't born yet. :P lmao, way to go Jeff! :P

droodly

They've reacted to all 3 of the Sam Raimi Evil Dead movies on the channel. They are fun watch-alongs if you haven't seen them yet. :)

SpankTheMonk

Quick comment- ty, ty for the runtime on the details! 🖖

Thomas Yanez

Saw it in the theater, blew my mind, blew my friends' minds and for years after, anytime somebody brainfarted or otherwise did something stupid, we'd say they "de-rez'd".

Ari Ramirez

Also! The phrase "Klaatu barada nikto" is a reference to The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951).

Thomas Wendel

I cannot tell you how amazing this movie was to 6th grader me back then. I mean, lightsabers had only been around for about 6 years and then Tron came out. Frezbies became cool again even though they wouldn't fly like Tron's does. I think now not returning to that world was a wasted opportunity for Disney. Which is why, decades later, they came out with Tron Legacy I think. Legacy is a good movie but it will never match the uniqueness of the original just because there was truly nothing like it back in 1982. Another thing to think about it that back then, computers were just becoming common. They were new and they were boring. The computer is what Dad used to work from home. There was no internet, graphics were poor and they took up the whole desk. It was the arcade where the great games were. You couldn't get that quality at home. Sure there was the atari 2600 but it sucked compared to the actual arcade. Tron showed us a new way to look at games and computers. A few years later, our school introduced the first computer programming class. No teacher knew what they were teaching it was so new. But I do remember we programed the computer to show "Greetings, Program!" when we logged in and then to ask us "Would you like to play a nice game of chess?". (Wargames had come out about then too). Dang we have come a long way!

SpankTheMonk

Ha I don’t know if I ever saw the Mickey Mouse Easter egg before! 😀 Blink and you miss it in the Sea of Simulation fly over. Also I don’t know of any cyber punk movies at the time - good question? 🤔 oh and Free Guy’s story plot heavily borrowed from Tron.

Kevin Townsend

I saw this at the theater probably 4 or 5 times. That makes me feel old. Tron: Legacy is pretty good. And they are making another sequel with Jeff Bridges called Tron: Ares due out next year. Another good movie is Free Guy (2021) with Ryan Reynolds.

BangDroid

Please please please watch Tron: Legacy! I love it probably more than this. To me it's in the same rule defying category as Terminator 2, sequels don't always suck and they can be better than the original. Not to say I don't like this at all, I just love Legacy so much. And I'm a HUGE Daft Punk fan and they did the soundtrack which was absolutely phenomenal!

Tim T—

Some other "computer movies": Sneakers (1992) Hackers (1995) Johnny Mnemonic (1995) The Net (1995) 23 (1998)

Vwlss Nvwls

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!! I saw this movie in the theater when I was eleven, and I was blown away. I had already been playing the arcade games, which I loved, and then those games were even more fun knowing the context. Despite its age, I think this title still holds up well, because the visuals are so unique, and the story is rather interesting and fun... if you can follow it. I have seen people who have trouble following the story, but that can happen with many movies. I am somewhat indifferent on the sequel. It is fun, and well done, but it does not have the same heart as this one.

beefjerkywizard

Sneakers and Hackers?!?! This ancient millennial would die. Two of my favourite comfort movies.

Vwlss Nvwls

David Warner, who played Sark and Dillinger also played another of my favorite villains in the 80s in Time Bandits. Another really unique and fun movie worth checking out.

Vwlss Nvwls

Come on, George, how did you not see "Tronvia" or "Trivion"?

Ron

Others have already mentioned it, but I think you guys would like the movie from which "Klaatu barada nikto" is from: The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). Btw, there is a 2008 remake which isn't great, but still interesting just to see the different take. The 1951 version, though, is definitely worth a watch.

Mitchell Bowker

I hope a top tier patron changes their name to "Jeff Bridges' Bulge" so George has to read that out at the end of every video.

brian burke

there is several tron video games, some arcade only and some on xbox and xbox 360 and a tron sequel, movie, they vary in how good they are

REDR58

There is also a PAC-MAN on Sark’s control panel in the carrier.

REDR58

Warner also provided the voice for the MCP which was slowed down a bit. So in every conversation between Sark/Dilinger and the MCP, Warner was talking to himself!

Jonas Buckner

George is going to be so horny and distracted by a certain character in the sequel, as we all were.

Paul mix

Obligatory +1 begging for Simone and George to react to Time Bandits.

REDR58

There are a number of extraordinarily beautiful women in that sequel.

brian burke

yeah its pretty good, i have not seen it in a while. but i liked the original more, i might see tron 2 again, i have some of the tron games, but not the original arcade one which was really good.

sarCC

Be aware: the second movie is pretty bad. Not nearly as creative and alot of very bad acting. Also, extremely dull. It is funny to see Jeff Bridges just doing "The Dude" but in neon. And the effects are embarrassingly bad, especially for the time. BUT the Daft Punk soundtrack is great, much like how the only good thing to come out of The Prequels was John Williams' "Duel Of Fates."

Rav Low

We've gotta watch Tron Legacy and ESPECIALLY Tron Uprising sometime. Tron Uprising is so dang good!

brian burke

i know of the others, but what is 23, i cannot seem to find it anywhere, only the number 23 with jim carrey but thats later. do you have any cast info?

brian burke

cool, thanks, but it wont let me click on it, does it cost anything or need certain apps?

brian burke

thanks i got it turned on but i cannot control the movements, how do you get it to fire upwards? the instructions do not say

Tim T—

Brian Burke: 23 from 1998 with August Diehl. It's a German movie modelled after a real German hacker of the 80s who lost himself in conspiracy theories and in hacking in the service of the KGB. A real but tragic story.

Gryff

Do the next one too. I want George to see skin tight Lite-Brite Thirteen

You have to do Tron: Legacy soon whilst this is fresh in your minds. This was the first VHS I ever rented aged 12 to watch on our single family TV in our house. My step dad said "never put me through that again !"
