Can you guys please check out The producers (2005 version) it’s so hilarious and I think you guys would enjoy it!

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Great film. The Coen Brothers’ range is always impressive - hilarious screwball comedy in one film, tense and atmospheric thriller the next. “Salad days” is Shakespearean - I think Antony and Cleopatra or Titus Andronicus, if memory serves? As far as acknowledging being wrong, Aussies call each other out on our shit and get humbled a lot of the time, so I feel like it’s a regular thing for us to admit wrongdoings in a mostly healthy way down here. That doesn’t mean it’s easily handled, but it’s a prevalent practice anyways. For me it was this morning haha.

I had a similar thought as George, but instead of John Goodman's prision escape fused with Shawshank, I want to see his emerging from the mud fused with the Uruk-hai emerging in LotR.

Deco

Another great Frances mcdormand movie is three billboards outside ebbing Missouri for the list, she won an Oscar for it.

JoeE

I would say vampires kiss is the craziest nic cage movie

FischerMax98

Willy's Wonderland. Cage is the main star, and doesn't say a single word. Weird but good. And weird.

FischerMax98

As dirty and greasy as Randall "Tex"Cobb was as the bounty hunter in this, he is a legit martial artist and boxer. He actually fought Larry Holmes for the world heavyweight title at one point. He also starred in a war movie with Gene Hackman and Patrick Swayze. Can't remember the title though. From the eighties.

JoeE

Genuinely funny guy 2, check out clips of him on talk shows or roast of Larry holmes

Com1xguy

I wince every time I see Hi scrap his knuckles on the ceiling of the mobile home.

Salad Days - ""Salad days" is a Shakespearean idiom referring to a period of carefree innocence, idealism, and pleasure associated with youth. The modern use describes a heyday, when a person is/was at the peak of their abilities, while not necessarily a youth."

Darin Foat

I had a ceiling like that in my bedroom when I was in high school, and I did that to myself once when I was taking my t-shirt off.

Darin Foat

Years ago I read a review that perfectly summed up the ending of this movie. I don't remember the author, so apologies for not fully crediting them. But they said it's as if you watched a 90 minute Looney Tunes cartoon, and then Bugs Bunny looked straight into the camera and said the most profound thing you'd ever heard.

davetheimp

The movie was "Uncommon Valor", a great movie. Cobb also had a very memorable scene brushing his teeth with a toilet brush in the third Naked Gun movie.

AgentFalcon

Lord of War is pretty toned down Nic Cage. Also might be his best movie. Highly recommend it.

Odd Thomas

A great Nic Cage movie is Matchstick Men, directed by Ridley Scott. And Longlegs is great too. And The Weather Man.

TGrimace

The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent is a must watch. Nobody can play Nic Cage the way Nic Cage plays Nic Cage.

mky

The main musical theme is from folk giant Pete Seeger's "Goofing-Off Suite", first released in 1955. You can read about it on Wikipedia and hear various versions on YouTube. It's a wonderful piece and fits so well with the tone of "Raising Arizona". BTW, I'm so happy you got around to watching this movie. It's one of my favorites. Cheers!

Vwlss Nvwls

I saw this in the theater the year I graduated high school. My mother and I saw a lot of movies that summer, and they were all good. We also saw "The Secret of My Success", "The Untouchables", and "Raising Arizona". Good memories, good movies.

Odd Thomas

The ultimate Frances McDormand movie is Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. She won an Oscar for it.

I say “I’m wrong” on a daily basis. Seriously though, I have no problem admitting I am wrong about this or that. But I also am not going to entertain opinions from people I fundamentally disagree with (people opposed to gay rights, feminism, etc.). Not every view is valid.

Vwlss Nvwls

I think 50% of John Goodmans and William Forsythes dialogue is just them screaming. :D There are so many little things in the movie that you often do not pick up on first time watching. One of my favorite is during that insane chase scene, when he first goes into the grocery store, you can hear the same theme song being played, but in a Muzak version. :D Nicolas Cages most toned down role would be in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and then this one, imo. The most outrageous would be hard to pin down, but I do recall one where he literally at a bug on camera, and I think it is Vampires Kiss.

Mitchell Bowker

Vampire's Kiss is probably his most crazy.

Vwlss Nvwls

I cannot recall what group or album from the 90s, but there was a song that at the start you hear them warming up, and right before the song starts someone say "mighty good cereal flakes, Mrs. McDonnough" :D

zak

Pig is an excellent Cage film if you want to see a more subdued performance.

BubblyRainbows

The only downside to this movie is that the song from it will be stuck in my head for weeks or possibly months to come. I remember distinctly that last time it stuck with me from Thanksgiving until after Christmas.

Cliff Adams

I thought I made a mistake once, but I was wrong.

REDR58

Great reaction. This was a first-time watch for me. It’s not that Glen (Sam McMurray) hates Polish people as such, it’s just that “Polish jokes” were just a common thing back then, mostly by immature children. The director of photography here, Barry Sonnenfeld is the director of the Men in Black and Addams Family movies. He also worked with the Coen Brothers on a few other movies. The ending of this movie with the football field reminds me to suggest that you watch “Friday Night Lights” (2004) directed by Peter Berg.

FranciscoGios

Nicolas Cage is a great actor unfortunately once he did that scene in The Wicker Man his Hollywood Stardom flipped downwards, but I respected him how he brought up his fame back within a year by acting great again on the National Treasure: Book of Secrets and that bad ass Ghost Rider movie. Laid back Nicolas Cage you guys should watch City of Angels (1998). Snake Eyes (1997) for suspense. I haven’t seen Longlegs but it is in my watchlist.

Grumblefunk

some people forget Cage won the Oscar for Best Actor in '96 for Leaving Las Vegas, check it out if you want to see his true acting chops, it's a trip

His Royal Codpiece

Great reaction! If y'all are interested in more understated Nic Cage, definitely check out Pig. His performance in that film stands apart from the rest, not only as his most quiet, but also, as a personal favorite of his. The film itself is also great and not unlike it's chief character; understated, unconventional, and unforgettable. But that's just me, can't wait to hear youse guys' thoughts on it!

james repka

George will remember that he previously saw Holly Hunter as Penelope, Ulysses McGill's ex-wife/fiance in O Brother Where Art Thou. She had an uncredited voice-over in the Coen's first movie, Blood Simple before Raising Arizona, and starred in Broadcast News that same year. She is also the voice of Elastigirl in the Incredibles movies. I enjoy a lot of Cage' movies with the exception of the ones he made simply to pay off his massive debts. Possibly my favorite is Lord of War, which you should watch. It should also be in contention for one of his calmest roles.

SpankTheMonk

Ode to joy - redneck take is 🔥

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Not only one of my favorite Coen Bros movies but one of my all time favorite movies, love every single frame. Thinking of more low key Cage characters three movies came to mind: Leaving Las Vegas, Lord Of War, and 8mm. He's great in all of them and they're good movies, only thing is they're all kind of depressing lol, but definitely interesting and absolutely worth a watch, recommend all, especially Leaving Las Vegas.

Spacecat44

The P.O.E. and O.P.E. on the bathroom door was a reference to Dr. Strangelove i.e. the code that was used to recall the bombers

Andrew Roach

Sadly the fired baby was next seen walking to the unemployment line. After being turned down he was next seen begging for bottles of milk on the sidewalk before getting his big break in Home Alone...

RichieRich

The most subdued Cage off the top of my head is either The Outsiders or Rumble Fish. The most outrageous is a movie called Deadfall (1993), a little known movie with an absolute insane performance by Mr Cage.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Oh boy, a closing question/comment that gives us an opportunity to gush over Nic Cage!! The most toned down performance I can recall is in “Joe”, an excellent indie drama, suprisingly made by the director of “Pineapple Express”. As far as his craziest, this could go many ways but I’ll recommend “Mandy”, “Bad Lieutenant” & “Color Out of Space”. Each give you a chance to see Cage go berserk in unique ways that suit the respective roles. And for another role where he’s doing his thing and still manages to be out crazied by everyone else around him, “Wild At Heart” (I had to work in the David Lynch recommendation). I’d say “Leaving Las Vegas” is a great middle ground to see both subdued, dramatic Cage while also having moments where he can ride that unpredictable shamanic energy. It reminds of a quote by Crispin Glover where he explained the eccentricities he applies to a role that I think works well for Nicholas Cage: “play tragedy like comedy and comedy like tragedy”.

djKENTO

The most toned down Nic Cage role is probably Rayford Steele in Left Behind, the religious movie. He’s barely there. He’s not putting in any effort. It’s a paycheck and nothing more. Personally I think his most over the top is Ghost Rider 2.

Jacob King

My choice of toned down Cage is Pig. A real gem of a movie. The reason Cage does so many movies is because he lost all his money in the 2000s. By lost I mean he spent it like someone trying to impress a nine year old. The man had a room where he could sit and watch his cobras. He owned Action Comics No. 1. He still owns a pyramid in New Orleans where he wants to be buried. Also he didn’t pay his taxes. I’m pretty sure the baby shoes are Leonard’s from when he was sold in the 50s. Trivia: Barry Sonnenfeld, the Addams Family and MiB director, was the DOP on Raising Arizona.

Drew

This is what I came to say. I’ve known this movie my whole life, but only saw Dr Strangelove last year. When they spotted the recall code in that movie, I instantly made the connection

Gary Fixler

It's crazy that I saw this when it came out, when I was about 10, and only remember I was bored. I've always remembered it existed, but didn't remember the details, and even had no memory that it was a comedy 😆 I was looking forward to watching it again with you, because I figure fired I'd like it more than when I was a little boy (and I was right!).

Justin James

If you liked this, you should watch "True Stories" (1986)!

Philipp Roensch

Well, this is a wild and weird redneck tale. Did not quite work for me, but some good laughs and definitely unique mix. Sadly some lost in translation, only had the German audio here. I think there have been imitations of Goodmans prison break as well, Family Guy maybe? (Oh yes, Steve and his friends that that stunt, thank you specific memory)

JoeE

It was vampires kiss where he ate the bug. I remember thinking I would want it in writing that that scene wouldn’t get cut if I did that

Gary Fixler

Yeah, I was going to say that Polish jokes were a huge meme in the 80s. I remember asking as a kid why everything was Polish jokes for years there, and they told me something about the polish Olympic team showing up to the Olympics on the wrong day, but I don't know if that's true.

Lee

You guys should do Leaving Las Vegas

simon brouillard

''I NEVER LOST ANYTHING'' Vampire's Kiss Vampire's Kiss Vampire's Kiss Vampire's Kiss YEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Simone's Coconut Squire

My favorite Cage performance is Leaving Los Vegas. Not his most "toned down" but a quietly intense performance from him.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Holy crap, someone else knows this movie! John Goodman's first film role ever, and a personal favorite of mine because I'm an insane Talking Heads fan.

Funk McPuke

Although Nic Cage has certainly been more over the top, I think part of the reason he seems toned down at all in "Raising Arizona" is because, unlike in most of his other movies, everyone here is matching his freak. It's an "If everything stands out, nothing stands out" situation. He's "toned down" only by comparison. Put this same performance in another movie and Nic Cage would seem WILD. Whatever the reason, I LOVE this movie and am so glad y'all finally got to it. It was the first Coen Brothers movie I ever saw and instantly became a favorite. In fact, when "Fargo" came out and everyone was gushing over it, I went in expecting a cartoony, super silly movie like "Raising Arizona" -- thinking that was the Coen Brothers' vibe -- and ended up disappointed. I had to give it some time and go back later before I could fully appreciate "Fargo" for what it was (and appreciate the Coens for their full spectrum of vibes, not just the one I started with and that was so formative to my humor as a kid). Anyway, glad you liked it. I saw another channel react to "Raising Arizona" and they didn't like it at all. They just thought it was "weird." Needless to say, there's a reason I'm a member of your Patreon and not theirs. As for your question of other over-the-top Nic Cage performances to react to, I think you already landed on the top choice: "Vampire's Kiss." That's some next-level Nic Cage. He was also pretty wild in "Face/Off," but you already reacted to that. Unfortunately, some of his other super crazy performances are buried in movies that are really bad, so not really worth a reaction (like the movie made by his brother, Christopher Coppola, "Deadfall" (and, yes, in case you didn't know it already, Nic Cage is a nephew of Francis Ford Copolla)). If, on the other hand, you want to see Nic Cage acting more seriously, he's pretty amazing in both "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Adaptation." It's not over-the-top Nic Cage, it's "serious actor" Nic Cage and he's awesome. All that being said, I honestly think his choice to go wild with his acting and persona was brilliant. There are only a handful of actors whose acting style becomes so eccentric that they become their own iconic brand -- Christopher Walken being a great example of that -- and those actors secure themselves a pretty permanent place in Hollywood while other, more oridinary actors fall to the wayside. As for some of his wilder (as well as some of his worse) choices of movies to do, most of that comes from going bankrupt and owing an F-ton of taxes. He's gotten slightly more choosy recently as he's (maybe) finally made some headway with his finances, but, for a while, he was going the Wesley Snipes route of saying yes to any and every movie offered to him, no matter what it was, as long as there was a paycheck.

Noel Valdez

I think Joe as well is a very grounded performance from him. (If you haven't seen that movie its really good.) I honestly believe the man is a great actor. Just not good with money. lol I remember him most from the National Treasure movies so I always thought of him as being more toned down alot of my life until I found out about his other crazy roles.

Noel Valdez

You guys need to watch Joe (2013). Stars Nic Cage and I love it cause it shows a side of the US that gets overlooked in movies. Most movies show a side of the US only the upper middle class or rich live like. I like movies that show the realities of how it really is here for most people. Also, this movie is the reason why I still have a huge crush on Holly Hunter. Something about her in this movie makes me wildly attracted to her. Lol

Noel Valdez

YES FOR PIG! Awesome movie. I get confused when people say Cage is only this crazy over the top actor. Because I feel like I've seen plenty of movies where he does a normal grounded performance. Maybe cause some of those other movies are older and I haven't seen them. Or in the case of the John Woo movies i hate that director and don't like action movies that much. So i haven't seen those as well.

Robert Durant

What I love about this movie is that you feel like everything going on exists in its own universe, Like it's so zany and ridiculous, practically every single character is either wacky in some way or just not at all normal. It reminds me of that kind of world in Big Trouble In Little China where things are so over the top but treated as routine everyday happenings.
