Is it possible that S&G are my favorite Canadians?

Jeff Whittaker

George keeps mentioning another episode with a gaseous life form, but for the life of me I can't find one. Which episode is he referring to?

WayneC

Shatner was one of the main characters in Boston Legal. Boston Legal also starred James Spader (from the Stargate movie), Candice Bergen (Murphy Brown), Rene Auberjonois (DS9), Julie Bowen (Modern Family) and Betty White.

Keith Brown

Shatner did several TV Series but Boston Legal is the one he did where he won an Emmy Award for his role as lawyer Denny Crain .

Florian

I would compare the eterprise to the ISS a scientific space station with humens from all over the earth on it, and now also tourists :D And I'm mega exicted for next weeks episodes :D this could be something for Georges shelf^^

Florian

At least they are the one I see the most :D

Itbewhatitbe

209 with Metamorphosis most recently. and theres like 1 or 2 more before but i cant recall exact episode off the top of my head.

Sergio Meira

With respect to why Spock doesn't like human emotions and is always complaining about them... I think the answer lies in the fact that his mother is human, but he wants to see himself as a Vulcan. I guess he has more emotional reactions than your average Vulcan, and he doesn't like this fact, so emotions anger him a little by reminding him of his own imperfections.

Da Big Appa

Shatner was also in a cop show called (This really is the name) T.J. Hooker from 82 to 87. He was also in a show called Boston Legal from 2004 to 2008

Jeff Whittaker

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in 209 as well...so something earlier.

Itbewhatitbe

wasnt there one that had some energy being forcing the crew to stay, only at the end to reveal that energy being had parents and basically just told him to go to his room and let the crew go?

Keith Brown

Yes Simone that is Piglet or actor John Fiedler who you may remember was in "12 Angry Men" that you saw also. If you see the John Wayne version of "True Grit" he plays lawyer J. Noble Daggett that one of many roles he had in a career of over 50 years.

Spacedone

Wolf In The Fold is one of my favourite episodes. It's creepy in parts but also very silly and lots of fun. On a not at all unrelated note, you should really check out the Michael Caine 'Jack The Ripper' TV mini series in which he plays Inspector Abberline.

WayneC

I believe Vulcans supress their emotions.

mky

Hooker's a good cop!

mky

We're allllllmost at episode 215! 🥳

Jeff Whittaker

Yeah, but that wasn't a gaseous life form...at least how I see it. But what do I know?

Itbewhatitbe

okay but like.. you can understand how someone who has never seen star trek can perceive as such yes?

Nate Gavin

George. Lol....like I said in an earlier comment, you won't be able to make it through all the Trek universe before you die of old age. So far, lots of ToS, TNG, etc. reactions I would suggest DS9 - it's a darker and different universe from the rest of the Trek universe pre 2000. If you follow Simone's suggestion (nothing wrong with it), except that you will absolutely hate Trek after a few more seasons. How many science fiction/crew stories can one write and/or watch?

Keith Brown

If you do 7 seasons of TNG and show 2 episodes a week it will take over 1 and half years to do it.

Jeff I.

As someone who doesn't care for Star Trek, I can't help but be sad about all the great one-season shows that could have been watched in the amount of time they've devoted to Star Trek.

Mikebdrx

There’s something….some………..thing on the wing

Itbewhatitbe

yeah they really should consider doing another tv show each week, ideally one voted for by patrons. actually, what they really should do is make star trek an extra thing they do for their own happiness rather than making it the only thing that exists on this channel.

Jeff Whittaker

True enough, but I'd still like to hear George's take on it :)

D. T. Nelson

While it isn't explicitly stated, during the time of Captain Kirk there are at least several hundred, if not thousands, of starships in the Federation. However, most are smaller crafts—science/research vessels, medical vessels, freighters, escort vessels, scout ships & survey vessels, transports, tankers, etc, plus many support ships (shuttles, runabouts, etc). As far as the full-fledged exploration starships like Enterprise, during the time of Kirk, there was one line spoken in the original series that suggests there are around 12 Constitution class starships, with Enterprise being the flagship and the one who gets the most note-worthy missions. So, yes, Captain Kirk would be well known. And, sorry Simone. TNG may be the gold standard when it comes to Star Trek, but there are definitely episodes in that series (thankfully, not many) that demand to be picked apart and ridiculed. Episodes the writers and show runners should have known better than to have created. Episodes that should never have been made and cry out to be removed and burned. I do hope you continue the Star Trek exploration well into the future (this is going to take many years). The OG cast movies, TNG, the TNG movies, DS9 (I think George will really appreciate that series), Voyager, possibly Enterprise (the prequel series), and the reboot movies (which could even be watched after the OG movies). If you do all those series, I also hope you keep the overlap between series and watch by air/release date in order to understand references. People generally have their favorites when it comes to the series'. As stated, many consider TNG to be the one all others are compared to. However, there is a large group who prefer the darker tone of DS9, and a not insignificant fan base for Voyager. I've even heard people who place Enterprise as their favorite. I think there is something to enjoy from each series. TNG is probably my favorite, and I really like Voyager (especially after the introduction of the character Seven). Another sci fi series you'd really like would be the early 2000s reboot of Battlestar Galactica. You should see a little of the 1970s series first. Not all of it, just enough to grasp the original concept of the source material (campy as it is). Then switch to the reboot (2-part mini series and 4 season show)

Monica Alarcon

I really really hope you don't skip the Animated series... I'm on the side of ALL THE STAR TREKS!!

John Welch

I have watched every episode of every series and I gotta say I just never liked STTAS. I almost feel guilty about it lol. But after my first run through I have never felt the desire to rewatch it like i have all the other series.

Mandi

I’ll just say that as along you keep doing weekly Star Trek, I’ll be here for the duration! I vote absolutely that you don’t skip any of it… especially TNG! Also by the time you get to Lower Decks, a lot of the best jokes are references to things that happened on other series, so don’t cheat yourselves! :)

John Welch

You act as if reacting to star trek means they are never going to react to something you MAY like more. You understand one does not preclude the other right? The fact they may never react to some niche one season show you liked 5 or 10 years ago probably has little to do with them reacting to one of the most beloved, longest running media franchises in history.

Darin Foat

When I was in college one of my friends liked to play a drinking game while watching TOS. I don't exactly recall all of the rules, but you had to slam your beer if a redshirt died. And when anyone beamed anywhere you had to start drinking and keep drinking until they fully materialized. We played it once while watching Obsession, and we got absolutely hammered.

John Welch

I am just laughing because tens of millions of people around the world have watched and rewatched hundreds of hours of Trek across 12 series, 43 seasons, 900 episodes, and 13 movies. It is literally the most prolific sci-fi franchise in history. That should give you an answer to your question lol.

Stevtrek

The animated series is only 22 half-hour episodes. You could easily do 4 at a time and be through it in a few weeks. Some of the ideas from the series directly impact TNG and it features TOS actors doing the voices. Also many of the TOS writers wrote the episodes.

Gaius Frakking Baltar

The writer of Wolf in the Fold, Robert Bloch (the author of Psycho) previously explored the notion of an immortal Jack the Ripper in a 1943 short story titled "Yours Truly, Jack the Ripper". That short story was later adapted for a 1961 episode of the Boris Karloff anthology series "Thriller": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF_1r6sPIHo

deskmerc

BAD PIGLET, one of my favorite episodes. The thing about Vulcan emotions has been explored in further episodes and is definately a theme examined in expanded universe materials, mostly in the novels. Vulcans have had a very violent past, and the solution to this was the adoption of the logical way of life and mastering their emotions. (In some novels, this is explained as a problem with translation, originally the word was translated as "suppression" of emotion, but its more "mastery" of emotion...they have them, but do not use them as motivations for action.) Some do go on to try and purge themselves entirely of emotion, but not all Vulcans are capable of this. Some Vulcans even decide "Nah, don't want to be logical at all"

deskmerc

According to my calculations, if you watch Star Trek at the rate of two episodes a week, and not including the movies, you will have content for the next 8 years and 34 weeks.

Mikebdrx

I vote for TNG as the next series I also hope you watch movies as well lol

Sergio Meira

Considering how Bones behaved in the beginning of the Wolf in the Fold episode ('Bones, I know a place where the women...' 'Yes, I know that place. Let's go!') I suggest that his nickname be changed to Boners.

Mastervodo

I love how giddy Simone is over the prospect of watching about 350 hours worth of Star Trek.

Crystal

OMG that was so fun...Piglet! NOOOoooo!!!!

Sergio Meira

Cannonically speaking, the Vulcans' lack of emotion is the result of strict discipline, following a path of self-control that defines their current culture. In more primitive times, Vulcans had stormy emotions, much stronger and much less controllable than human emotions. The fact that they managed to become so logics-oriented through self-control is nothing short of a small miracle.

mky

We got a "She's dead, Jim." Take a drink! 🥳 Actually, we got "She's dead, Jim." twice and a "He's dead, Jim." Take three drinks! 🍹🍸🥃

Sergio Meira

Best Star Trek show? DS9. (I'm a Babylon 5 fan, so of course I like DS9!) Worst Star Trek show? Hmm... maybe TOS, not because it was 'really bad', but because it's the 60's man! And the special effects are so giggle-inducing... Voyager is a show that had a lot of potential but failed to deliver -- which is sad because it ran parallel to DS9, a show that delivered in spades. Enterprise also suffered from a lack of central planning: it could have been a lot more. Ranking? Let's see... DS9 > TNG > SNW > Lower Decks > TAS > ENT > STD/Picard > VOY/TOS/STD (Not 100% sure about STD).

Lintrinsic

The Animated Series (TAS) is also worth a watch. Going through the whole thing gets my vote.

John Welch

George an argument can be made that in terms of longevity William Shatner is one of the most successful TV actors in history. He had a tv show in almost every decade since the 60's. First "Star Trek" in the 60's. Then "Barbary Coast" and "Star Trek the Animated series" in the 70's. Cop show "TJ Hooker" in the 80's. He hosted "Rescue 911" and Starred in "Tekwar" based upon his own novels in the 90's. In the early 2000' he was amazing in "Boston Legal", which was much watch tv for my dad and I at the time. He hosted "William Shatners Raw Nerve" for 39 episodes on the biography channel, a reality show called "Better late than never" and a sitcom called "Shit my dad says" in the 2010's. They may not all have been huge hits but I can't think of another TV actor who managed to stay employed for over 50 years.

I've always found Wolf in the Fold interesting, it's a compelling story but will a couple of WTF aspects. Scotty develops misogyny due to an accident caused by a woman. So Dr McCoy's prescription is to go on a crawl around strip clubs and titty bars chatting up dancing girls? Spock's comments on women being the prey always gets a big FU from me whenever I watch this one. But otherwise I think it's excellent. I read the short story in the novels they later released featuring episodes as a kid. Always had a soft spot for it.

Nate Gavin

Lol you win and feel good for the rest of the day

Michael Nemo

Vulcan's emotions are more intense than human's and they've learned to suppress.

Actuarial Lurker

George- Per Cannon- ie. Roddenberry himself there are TWELVE ships like the Enterprise- "Galaxy Class" including the Enterprise itself with the Enterprise considered the flagship. So you are CORRECT in that it is equivalent to being the Captain of one of the current US Aircraft carriers and the best one in the fleet. On one of the TOS episodes Spock is refried to as the best first officer in the entire fleet...the show when pitched was supposed to be "Wagon Train in Space" or "Master and Commander"- like the British Navy in the 1700s and 1800s where the ships were both war ships AND exploitation ships and were pretty far away from each other and this almost on their own

Actuarial Lurker

Here Kirk is Captain Ahab rather than the Doomsday episode where Decker goes crazy after the planet destroying cannoli kills his crew

Thomas Yanez

Shatner Shatner'ed so hard in S02E13, it was glorious.

Actuarial Lurker

Shatner was ina Twilight Zone episode, the movie Judgment at Nuremberg with Burt Lancaster, Spencer Tracy and Richard Widmark and MANY TV shows from the 60s to today: The Defenders, Route 66, Outer Limits, Man from UNCLE, The Virginian, Dr. Kildare, Ironside, Hawaii 5-0, and starred in TJ Hooker, Rescue 911, Boston Legal

Actuarial Lurker

So is Scottie is possessed by Jack the Ripper or who else did it? The creepy bald guy is from 12 Angry Men as the nerdy juror

Pearl Jam

DSC 😷 I also loved Voyager, my fav. But DS9 would probably be my #2.

Actuarial Lurker

Simone- the censors din't like bare female midriff. In "IO Dream of Jeannie" they made Barbara Eden cover her navel after a few seasons of having a gem stone there. This is a few years later so TOS was "risqué" in showing abs, an interracial kiss, side boob etc- separate beds was 1950s I love Lucy and early 1960s. Bewitched from 1964 was "shocking" in that they shared a bed, although in 1960 Fred and Wilma Flintstone in the cartoon also shared a bed and in 1964 The Munsters Fred and Lillie shared a bed too

Cory Garron

I vote for all the Trek! Dammnit, listen to Sim(one)!

2026-09-05 05:00 Ranking Star Trek is a very personal and often contentious thing but for what it is worth here are my rankings of the ones I have seen. 1. TNG 2.TOS 3.Voyager 4.DS9 5.SNW 6.Enterprise 7.Lower Decks 8.Discovery 9.Picard 10.TAS

Simone's Coconut Squire

There are as many rankings as there are fans. Many of them are so different from each other that it really boils down to each fan's personal tastes. The one caveat is that I'd wager the overwhelming majority of fans would rank TNG #1 or #2. For me TNG and DS9 tie for #1.

Simone's Coconut Squire

If I REALLY had to break down my feelings about TNG vs DS9 for top spot it would be: Second half of DS9 on top, then TNG, then first half of DS9 3rd.

Sergio Meira

I loved the Voyager characters (except Neelix, who I couldn't stomach). But the story, the way it was treated, and the opportunities it missed... it turned into another TOS, with Voyager instead of the Enterprise, with alien-of-the-week episodes scattered all over, instead of the more character-driven discussion of what happens under extreme circumstance when Starfleet and Maquis have to co-operate to survive in a quadrant nobody knows anything about?... I expected something comparable to the remake of Battlestar Galactica; and I got a TOS/TNG-lookalike; "let's do the same again" rather than "let's create something new". So, however much I liked captain Janeway, or Seven of Nine, or The Doctor, I ended up disappointed with Voyager. It could have been more than it was.

StonyD

Bill Shatner is known for the successful TV shows "TJ Hooker", and "Boston Legal" (the latter of which he won an Emmy). He was the host of a long-running docudrama "Rescue 911", has written something like a dozen novels, released some questionable music, movie cameos, and has made a full second career lampooning himself as well as making "William Shatner" into a pop culture character of its own. Oh and he's also the oldest man to go to space (90) when he went up in Blue Origin with Jeff Bezos. I mean, George, you did ask... : )

Sergio Meira

Maybe someone someday will get them to watch the entire Doctor Who, starting in Season 1, with the first episode, An Unearthly Child, and with the First Doctor? :-)

nigel Macbug

l dare anyone to drink, every time Simone makes a predictable noise watching trouble with tribbles

In Obsession, I think you missed the point. Kirk acknowledged in his personal log that what he was doing seemed irrational, but that his job was about trusting intuition (ultimately, that the creature posed a greater danger to people, if left to its own devices). I disagree that we need an explicit explanation as to why the creature was able to communicate with Kirk. The whole point was that he was able to sense its intelligence 11 years ago, and when he encountered it again, he sensed the creature’s motive to return to its home, the place where Kirk first encountered it. Scent (a honey-like smell) was correlated with Kirk’s ability to perceive the creature’s intelligence, and we can infer from what we know (eg. ants or other animals communicating with chemicals, etc.) that some communication is innate and not possible to put into words.

“Kirk out..” is one but most participants die after one episode attempt 😵☠️

Eversharpe

I would say it more akin to being the Captain, Commodore, or Admiral of a exploration voyage from the age of sail. Think Columbus, Cook, Magellan, Drake.

SpankTheMonk

Ok so it has been said by George, the “Mary Sue”! I don’t think it was mentioned before but if it was sorry. Star Trek TOS fan fiction is what really made the Mary and ( the Marty Sue) phenomenon. According to different accounts a lot of teenage girls and young women were submitting and writing ToS fan fiction where they were the youngest Starfleet member on the Enterprise and they were gifted with both beauty and brains. And the fictional name Mary Sue was actually used in one of the first. Later Star Trek TNG decided they needed a Wesley Sue 😅 -

SpankTheMonk

Obsession and the vampire fog. I believe outside of vampiric mythos the inspiration may have come from the deadly fog in London about - decade before. Potentially killing thousands of Londoners.

SpankTheMonk

Scotty really doesn’t know! And potential adorable Piglet man is diabolical villain!!! 😵 Pon-farr is still silly btw. Subjectivity on different Star Trek shows. The biggest split is between the Roddenberry/Berman and JJ/ Kurtzman products (shows/movies). The latter deviates in many significant ways. And later even the things solo Berman (sans Roddenberry RIP) with Brandon Brags were trying to do was an issue and it seemed they were even trying to fly on cruise control. Please consider watching the whole thing including the 70s ToS animated show. And then take a 30 year break after Enterprise and the last Next Gen movie. 😅 My ranking: 1: ToS ( just like Star Wars) need the first to get going. 2. Next Gen 3. DS9 4 . TOS Animated Series 5. Voyager ( even though seasons 4-6 are rough) 6. Enterprise And I don’t believe there is anymore “Star Trek” after that. 😈

danzthename

Redjac = The First Evil in Buffy :D

REDR58

Having never seen Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, Discovery, a few episodes of the animated series, and a couple of seasons ofVoyager, I would have to Picard to the bottom of all of that by far. I’ve heard season three of Picard somewhat redeemed that series, but the first two seasons are some of the worst television I have ever seen. My top three are TNG, DS9 and then TOS.

Ron

Well done, George, on guessing Jack the Ripper! Amazing that you guessed that after the cold open! And, yes, Simone, Piglet!! As for follow-on shows, I'm all-in on watching the rest of Star Trek (TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT) and movies. I'm not really a fan of the modern Star Trek (starting with JJ Abram's ST (2009) reboot), but I did like Picard S3. I also got through 2 seasons of Discovery before giving up ( S2 was more of a "hate" watch though).

REDR58

I partially disagree with this. Generally speaking, a commodore or an admiral commands a *fleet* whereas a captain commands a single vessel. A “flagship” (such as how the Enterprise is usually described, at least in TNG if not TOS), is any naval vessel (usually but not necessarily one of the most “powerful” ships) in the fleet where the flag officer (a commodore or an admiral) and his or her staff has literally/figuratively flown the flag, establishing command. The admiral who is aboard such a vessel doesn’t necessarily control the specific vessel he or she is stationed on, that’s left to the ship’s captain who follows the orders given to the fleet. TNG Enterprise is strange, as it is often described as Starfleet’s Flagship of the Fleet despite rarely having any officer ranked higher than the Captain onboard. Then again, Starfleet is not a “military” (but they may as well be, given how heavily armed and powerful their ships seem be for vessels of “exploration”). As far as the Enterprise being equivalent to an aircraft carrier, not so much. Aircraft carriers, at least those that are part of any major power’s fleet *always* travel with accompanying escort ships. Despite generally being considered the most powerful single kind of ship in service today, at least in terms of offensive capabilities which are entirely delivered its onboard aircraft, an aircraft carrier is essentially defenseless, especially modern day ones. An aircraft carrier’s aircraft and escorts ships protect the carrier from air- and sea-based threats. Most aircraft carriers in service today barely have any built-in air defense weapons to speak of, perhaps 2 or 3 relatively close-range guns and 2 or 3 sets of anti-aircraft missile launchers and maybe some relatively rudimentary anti-torpedo defense. An aircraft carrier without its aircraft and escort vessels is basically a defenseless target. A carrier is typically escorted by a cruiser, some destroyers or frigates and sometimes a submarine, or other smaller vessels. I suspect that a typical World War 2- era aircraft carrier which was bristling with many dozens of large and small guns could probably knock out a modern day carrier in a one-on-one shootout at close range, or at least damage it badly enough to be considered a “mission kill.” A single modern cruiser, frigate or possibly even a destroyer could easily devestate a modern carrier one on one with missiles alone from an even greater distance. There was a bit of a scandal a few years ago as the Royal Navy’s two new Queen Elizabeth class supercarriers only mounted 3 CIWS guns on each of the ships, and not even any anti-aircraft missiles. And that’s a bare minimum when it comes to self-defense for such a vessel. Anyway, TOS Enterprise is classified as a “cruiser” and seems to typically operate on its own. TOS cruisers are starfleets most powerful ships and there are only 12 of them. We almost never see more than one traveling together. Modern cruisers do not usually but certainly can operate alone. Granted, Starfleet is a non/quasi-military organization but it’s the closest comparison to what we see operating today from modern naval cruisers.

MacGuffinStuff

I vote you watch them all, especially because I have not and I have always wanted to, and I'm really enjoying watching all these episodes I've never seen, even the goofy ones. Can't wait for TNG, I think you're really going to like the writing George. I watched some of Voyager and DS-9, I personally preferred DS-9, in part because, like someone once pointed out to me, it's darker and less optimistic about technology's ability to solve problems, not so utopian. And you should definitely watch the movies, my favorites with the original cast have to be 2 and 4, 2 is arguably the best while 4 is just a lot of fun for me. Btw that guy with the flat nose, guy was probably a boxer, that's common with people who've had their noses broken multiple times, the cartilage is mostly gone. The biker from Hell in Raising Arizona, Tex Cobb, was a kickboxer, he had that nose too, it's also why he always sounds stuffed up.

Mr.Redmage

I believe at this time starfleet has 12 enterprise equivalents, and lots of starbases and smaller ships. The way I interpreted the Obsession creature is that it Expresses through scent instead of say facial expressions (kind of like the gehk from no mans sky) kirk understood "home" not just through being more familiar with the creature but because he's been to the planet it calls home (which is probably a good part of the scent). Its also why whenever its about to drink someone's blood it smells "sickly sweet". at least thats what I think Absolutely Positively due ALL of it lol and dont forget the movies! for me: 1: Voyager 2: TOS 3:TNG 4:DS9 5:enterprise 6: Discovery? its the last one ive actually watched but if im honest i didnt care for it too much

Joseph Schiller

can't wait until next week one of my favorite episodes. Tribbles!

Joseph Schiller

You guys should watch William Shatner - Rocket Man YouTube (I forgot about it until you guys were talking about did Shatner do anything else and this came to mind )

Joseph Schiller

I think Stewie from family guy did a parody of this as well.

Simon Pegged Me

There are also larger ships, a dreadnought class, but the Enterprise, I think, is considered the flag ship.

Simon Pegged Me

He also starred in one of the most beloved episode of The Twilight Zone (1959), "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet." Questionable? His music is sublime. It speaks to me.

Simon Pegged Me

I'm torn, because I think TNG was better television, but I like TOS better because I love the original crew better. It's my No.1. What it comes down to is I'd rather be a crew member on Kirk's Enterprise than Picard's. I'd probably end the 5-year mission with gray hair from my captain making questionable calls and almost getting us killed on what should be safe missions, but it would be a hoot. Other being a red shirt, there isn't a division I wouldn't mind being assigned to. (Can you imagine woking the medical division with Bones as your boss? Nothing but good times.) So it's 1. TOS, 2. TNG, 3. Strange New World, 4. DS9, 5. Lower Decks, and Voyager. Honestly, DS9 and Voyager had better premises, but dropped the ball on execution. But I vote for watching them all.

Sergio Meira

I guess I'm not that into TOS because it wasn't "my" Star Trek; I grew up watching TNG, and TOS felt deficient in comparison. (Except for Spock; I always liked Spock.) So I didn't have the same fidelity to the original crew. Though TOS did grow on me with time, I'm still basically a TNG little boy. TNG made me love science fiction, and I've always been thankful to them because of that.

Lintrinsic

Trying to explain this without spoilers... The answer is it varies across the franchise. I suppose in TOS they are equivalent to aircraft carriers, but I suspect there's probably additional Starfleet PR going on that gives them celebrity status. Some of their actions are probably newsworthy within the Federation and infamous amongst rival societies. This becomes a little more overt in the movies but it's akin to all the Bond villains knowing exactly who he is only with Kirk. Other trek series, particularly Enterprise as it's a prequel and to some extent another show I'll decline to name, the crew is absolutely treated more like an Apollo mission, complete with kids learning about it in school.

Actuarial Lurker

Agree with all this TODAY- in 2260 you didn't need escorts due to the sheer power of a single ship- EXCEPT as we see in TNG with The Borg where whole flotillas are needed or DS9 when full blown war breaks out and you have squadrons of allied ships

Kinokind

C'mon, you guys! Piglet was the juror with the cough drops in Twelve Angry Men! Since "Wolf in the Fold" was written by the great Robert Bloch (who once to told an interviewer that he was unfairly accused of being too dark, that he in fact had the heart of a small child - in a jar on the corner of his desk. . ), then this episode is like Psycho. Starring Piglet. Food for thought. Bloch also wrote "Catspaw".

3dbadboy1

In the episode Court Martial, the Commodore commented to Kirk that only one in a million are chosen to be a Starship Captain. I also recall (correct me if I'm wrong on the number) that there are only 12 ships like the Enterprise in the Fleet. In the "Starfleet Technical Manual", the Enterprise is a cruiser but is portrayed in the series a little more like an aircraft carrier (without all the aircraft, lol).

3dbadboy1

What William Shatner is REALLY famous for is the episode Nightmare at 20,000 Feet from The Twilight Zone. THAT was some really good acting.

Alan Pownall

TNG is rough for the first couple of seasons but after that is the best trek, if you make it to season 3 you'll probably be happy to watch all the rest and the same goes for DS9 and even Voyager although it is the weakest of the three it also finds its feet in season 3.

3dbadboy1

As you adventure through the Star Trek universe, you get your answers on emotion and logic and Vulcans. Just keep going! Answers are coming!

BzzBzzBzzBzzBzz

I would say that desire is different than emotions. Desire can be understood as movement driven by a lack. The very circumstances of survival produce an abundance of problems needing solutions, movement driven by the need to know. Vulcans are driven by the pursuit of knowledge. We already know that when it comes to mating Vulcans are driven by intense emotions. Species survival is the emotional core of their logical pursuit of knowledge

SpankTheMonk

One in a million could have just been said as idiom. As in it is a very small percentage

SpankTheMonk

I think the early seasons of TNG are a bit stiff for at least one specific reason because it was mentioned by the producers to limit interpersonal conflict, and some scripts that felt like out of time maybe from the ToS days. But there are still a lot of gems in the rough of those seasons.

3dbadboy1

Yea it is an all inclusive statement

The original is def the best - love every episode. Did not like tng on, bunch of wimps. I like Kirks fuckem or fight them approach. Need to do the Trek original animated series next (70's). Then on to the original movies - all are great. Then I would recommend the new 'Kelvin timeline' movies before going to the latest Strange new worlds - only 2 seasons but is a prequel to the original star trek.

Star Trek Discovery is just awful. The best thing I can say about Strange New Worlds is that it isn't as bad as Discovery. The first two seasons of Star Trek Picard are pure garbage. The third season of Star Trek Picard is surprisingly really good and is the only season that's worth watching After Discovery.

Been a Star Trek fan since 67, guess that makes me the old fuddy-duddy, but truth is, I have watched every incarnation and all have their high moments, some actually achieve at the highest level, and some from every series are really, really bad. In my experience, TOS was innovative in a way nothing else was at the time and the writing and acting are still worth the watch. You might want to watch the remastered effects versions on your own sometime, it really is the best work of this kind I have ever seen, enhancing without being distracting at all. TNG, reinvigorated the franchise and opened up story lines, effects and acting on a more regular basis, especially seasons 3-7. DS9 is the favorite of a lot of fans and is unique in that it has the first and strongest series long story arch of the franchise. It also has several of the best episodes of the franchise. Again, really takes off with season 2 toward the end. You might get away with having the fans vote on 8-10 episodes a season to give you a really good overview of each series. You would by necessity miss a few real gems, but you would definitely get the full feel for each series.

Strange new worlds, Discovery. the list goes on...

Amos T Fairchild

I'm not a TNG fan, but you do you lol. And DS9 is a crap Babylon 5 ripoff (to troll the trekkies lol)

Ha, and right before hitting play, George said "or maybe it's about the perfume." Nice.

I love your reactions, and I love Trek. But, please do a curated/"best of" watch for future series. That's my vote.

I've been watching along with the remastered versions with the new effects, and they kept all of them to exactly the same length, to the frame, probably to match the audio, so I never have to pause, or play catch-up with the original versions they're watching, which is really nice. I agree that the new effects were done really well, but at the same time, I just really love seeing what they were able to do back in the 60s, a time I did not live through. The new effects are great, but they still aren't the original. I feel like I'm cheating, somehow.

TNG is my favorite Trek. But to be fair, I never watched much after Voyager (except a small amount of Enterprise). I just couldn't get into anything after that. I vote for, if not ALL of Trek, then all of Trek up to the end of Voyager.

I think Spock not "understanding" emotions is more like him dismissing them out of contempt (an emotion?!). It's like how George cannot understand how people can talk in baby talk. It's pure cringe to him, but it makes sense to the weirdos who do it. Vulcans suppress their emotions down to a point where any display of emotion is pure cringe to them. They spend their whole lives ignoring emotion, so they really do look at people laughing, or any other wanton display of feeling, and wonder what the logic is in it. You can go the other way, too. George, think of all the times you laugh really hard, because Simone got so scared by some musical sting, or even a jump cut. You didn't jump, and you can't believe anyone would. It's not that you don't understand being scared, but it takes so much more to scare you into jumping that you're surprised by what just surprised Simone. You don't have those feelings. Spock doesn't have most feelings. Almost every human reaction is tedious (an emotion?!) to him. Here they all go, being emotional again. I think we've already seen him react to pain, though, even if it's just with an agonized look on his face. If he was really all logic and no emotion, he wouldn't even notice pain. I think one of the biggest problems in writing something so literally alien is that script writers are people, who are full of a lifetime of emotion. All of their creative thoughts run on emotional hardware. It's like a blind-from-birth person trying to write about a beautiful scene (although they could, because they could simply synthesize a lifetime of things they've read, but you get my point).

CT

George, I'm sorry to say that you need to bring your expectations down. Trek is pretty simplistic in terms of lore and the concepts that are explored, especially when compared to Sci-Fi literature. It attracted a fanbase back in the day that wanted more from the show, more than what the writers could deliver. It was NOT made to be nit-picked, but it was anyway. It sounds like what you're looking for is The Expanse, but... idk what happened there.

IMO, after you finish Star Trek TOS you should do the original series movies (6 movies) and give Star Trek a break for a while. Some suggestions: Stargate SG-1 - follows on from the movie. The main star is Richard Dean Anderson, who also played MacGyver (I'm sure George has seen references to him in The Simpsons). Boston Legal - legal drama/comedy. Stars William Shatner, James Spader (played Daniel Jackson in the movie Stargate), Candice Bergen (played Murphy Brown), Rene Auberjonois (Odo in ST DS9) and Julie Bowen (from Modern Family). Boston Legal was a spinoff from the series The Practice. The main characters Allan Shore (Spader) and Denny Crane (Shatner) first appeared in the final seson of The Practice. In the past that Simone has mentioned that she may like to watch ER at soem point. ER is an excellent series, though it tailed off at the end. It stars Anthony Edwards (Goose from Top Gun), George Clooney, Noah Wyle (he was Corporal Barnes in A Few Good Men), Julianna Margulies (from The Good Wife) and William H. Macy. And there were many guest stars, some already famous, and some in their earlies roles.

StonyD

You don't like TNG or DS9 but you like non-Trek things like STD and Strange New Worlds? Okay. That's odd.

StonyD

I agree 100% with this post.

Amos T Fairchild

Lol. Iknew I would get a bite. To be fair I'm quite old and grew up with the original series and then original films. TNG just always seemed a bit bland, and DS9 was not something that ever grabbed me, and now we know why. I did like the Doctor concept in Voyager and that show was a lot better once the 7 of 9 dynamic came along. And all the hate got me watching all the newer shows like Discovery and Strange New Words, which have been a lot better with ongoing stories... But Babylon 5 was definitely in a class of it's own compared to Trek, even for an original guy like me.

Amos T Fairchild

I second that. The original films with the original cast carry on from the show really well.

Stevtrek

I liked Voyager a lot more than DS9 back during the original airing, but found DS9 to be better than I thought once I watched the entire series when the DVDs came out. Still like Voyager more, but they are a lot closer...

I need to give Babylon 5 another chance. All the goofy Jim Henson creatures and wild makeup put me off of it, even as a kid, which is weird, because I was always saying during the treks that it's silly that everyone just looks like a human with weird forheads all the time. It just seemed silly, but all I've heard for decades now by fans is how amazing it is. I wouldn't mind watching it along with them, because they make even stuff I wouldn't like, or didn't like, a lot more fun.

gfixler

I selfishly want you both to watch every single episode of every single series, especially TNG, the one I grew up with and loved. 😆 The most fun thing in TNG for me was finding a lost episode. I watched it for years on TV, and thought I'd seen every single episode 5x, because there was never a new one (and there was no real way back then to get a list of names and plots, or watch anything outside of TV airings (way before the internet, and I lived in the middle of nowhere in the woods). Then one day, out of the blue, years and years into being a fan, an episode came on that I'd never heard of. It must have just been perfectly random happenstance, that I had been missing all its airings over the years, and I was so excited. I watched the whole thing in wide-eyed glee, wondering if I was dreaming it. I can't even recall which episode it was now, but it was like finding gold. It made me wish they would have done that on purpose. Imagine all the cast and crew gets together and decides to film a lost episode, or 5, over time, and they fully write, film, edit, and do all the sound and effect work, then can it for 30-40 years, and basically forget about it. Everyone is sworn to secrecy, exited about their time capsule. Then, one day, on some anniversary, out of nowhere, they release the lost episodes on an unsuspecting populace, causing the megafans to actually melt, or explode. YouTube reviews would spike through the roof, along with convention attendance, as everyone sought to ask people involved all about it. If I were rich, and at all involved in a fun production, like a Star Trek, with a ton of cult fans, I'd make it happen. I feel like you'd need bottle episodes, though, with a very limited group, working on it in secret, volunteer-based, because the more people working on it, the more chance someone, maybe while drunk or high, lets the cat out of the bag in a few years.

Beddoe

I say watch them all. Don't half-ass it. Watching the weaker stuff will help you appreciate the good stuff, and there is a lot of good stuff. The live action series, the animated series, the movies, the porn parodies... Watch them all !

I liked George's mention of so many items for a fast food menu. We have both extremes here in LA. We have Jack in the Box, which has everything ever (tacos, burgers, pancakes, spaghetti, truffles, roast lamb, noodles, okay maybe I'm exaggerating, but not by much), and then we have In-N-Out, which has like 7 things (but there's also a secret menu that's not listed). I was surprised by both when I moved here in 2002. I sat paralyzed by choice at Jack the first time I went, cars piling up behind me, and I laughed when I first got to In-N-Out, because I thought half the drive through sign was missing. It's like: hamburger, cheeseburger, Double Double, french fries, and then some drinks and milkshakes.

Not sure if anyone broke this down before in other comments but its good to remember that Kirk, Bones and Spock are suppose to highlight the different spectrum of the human experience. Bones represents pure emotion while Spock is all logic and Kirk is suppose to represent the balance between the two. It's a known thing in trek circles about how those three represent Pathos Logos and Ethos. That's why Bones always is written in a way to highlight the irrational and emotional parts of humanity. also....YOU WILL DO ALL OF THEM.....that is all

I would love for you guys to do all 7 seasons of TNG. Some of the first season isn’t great, but it establishes a lot of character dynamics and lore that is important later in the series. In fact I would love it if you do all of Star Trek. I know it’s a lot but I think it would be worth it. In fact your doing TOS is why I joined the Patreon. I always enjoyed your YouTube videos and when I found out you were doing Star Trek I leaped at the chance to join the channel. I wish more people would react to Star Trek maybe you can start a trend. ☺️

James Wilson

I'm playing catch up but here's another vote for you guys to watch all episodes of TNG, DS9, and Voyager. Your Star Trek reactions are my favorite. And to answer George's question about ranking, my personal ranking is 1. DS9, 2. TNG, 3. Voyager. And I think most people tend to rank DS9 and TNG as the best and fairly close to each other, with Voyager being a bit of a step down. There also seems to be a common theme where each series starts slow and needs to find its footing before it starts to get good so be prepared for early seasons of each show to be a bit weaker.

Charles Clover

Full on agree about DS9 and B5 ❤️

Angzarr

My vote would be all of TNG, DS9, Voyager, and I'd be up for Enterprise. I really don't care about anything after Enterprise, I'd go for Bablylon 5 and then the Stargates instead.

Man, the people on here. I just joined and this is the caliber of discussion. Someone calling other Star Trek shows "non-Trek" (you don't get to gatekeep what is and isn't Trek; you can not like it, but it IS Star Trek), and then someone literally announcing they're going to troll and then confirming their Troll status by being excited they got a "bite," just to announce their opinions as if they're facts. If this is this group of Patrons I'm not going to last long. I joined because of the Star Trek reactions and the hope of actual discussion. Also, DS9 is far from a "crap Babylon 5 ripoff," pretty sure any accusations of anything being ripped off have been debunked, and even so, both shows are completely different outside of superficial similarities. (I'm no fan of DS9 myself, honestly, but Babylon 5 is definitely not superior IN MY OPINION, which I will not state as fact.)

When you think about it, thought is nothing more than a electro-chemical action, just as scent is. The creature communicates thoughts thru smell directly into the brain. Kirk has had the most exposure to the creature so it reasons that he may have grasped its form of communication better than the others. I agree on the spawning thing, there should have been more explanation how the derived that information. They did determine using the radioactive waste hurt it when they used it on the creature in the ventilation system, thus leading to them to use an anti matter explosive device to destroy it. SO the bomb wasn't really a Hail Mary. When Mr Scott is on the stand being analyzed by computer they had to use a body double for his right hand because the actor James Doohan only has three fingers on his right hand. He lost his finger in an injury fighting in WW2

Schnabley

George, don’t know if you read messages on old posts but William Shatner was in several Teilight Zones, Columbo episodes before doing TJ Hooker and then Boston Legal, that would be a great show for you guys to check out. But it’s 5 seasons.

Just FYI, whilst Tritanium may be too strong to physically break, phasers operate by breaking down nuclear bonds, which means a phaser could break tritanium almost as easily as breaking any other physical object (though the settings would probably need to be higher).
