Jeff K.

I hope this gets you guys on a Hitchcock kick. Rear Window and North by Northwest, in particular, are two virtually flawless films.

Jeff I.

Just throwing out a suggestion for Hitchcock's earlier 1951 psychological thriller called "Strangers on a Train" some day. It's very creative in multiple ways for 1951 and really well done overall.

Matt O'Keefe

Was wondering when you two might get to this?

Christina Doxstader

I'm writing this before I finished the video but yes, this movie and the book that it is based on, was inspired but Ed Gein. Ed Gein, as a matter of fact, is also the inspiration for Hannibal Lectar

Christina Doxstader

So many great stories about the making of this movie that you should look into as well. My favorite story is that when the movie was submitted for review to make sure it passed the Hays Code, something else you should look into if you haven't already, it was sent back because they claimed that there was a nipple visible during the shower scene. Hitchcock unwrapped the print, rewrapped it and sent it back without changing anything and it passed. Makes me smile when I think about it.

ShōNuff3K

Hey! 12 Angry Men jury foreman! Never noticed before.

Zinphad

Love to see folks going into this thinking they know what to expect. So many shots that still play well (like the detective going down the stairs).

Zinphad

+1 for Strangers on a Train. Would also like suggest Rope.

JBK405

Even knowing the bits that you did, the movie is STILL surprising because the setup and payoff is never what you quite expect.

Christopher Feiertag

I’d like to throw Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” into the mix here for you to experience. His magnum opus in my opinion.

Gaius Frakking Baltar

You guys have already encountered the author of Psycho, Robert Bloch, a couple of times previously: he wrote the Star Trek episodes "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" and "Catspaw". He also wrote a third episode for season 2, which you'll soon get to!

Stugotz

Wait, how old is George? He says he's never seen a payphone but payphones didn't die out until the mid to late 2000's. Kinda weird that he's never seen one.

Jeff K.

Oh and by the way, George and Simone: Janet Leigh, who plays Marion Crane here, is Jamie Lee Curtis’s mom.

Itbewhatitbe

ya but you know payphones didnt just magically get removed all around the world at the same time in the mid to late 2000s. like different countries adapted away from it at different times and rates. major cities in China might have moved away from them much earlier for example while buttfuck no where small town USA might still be using them today. also, just to wager a guess here, hes probably thinking about the phone booths, as thats what was on screen.

Emptysea93

Lmao as a Phoenix resident it made me laugh so hard to hear y’all talk about Phoenix. The estavlishing shot really is Phoenix, and that building with the radio tower is still there, in fact I work there! At the time of filming Psycho, Phoenix was a relatively small city, but was still notable for being one of the biggest stops before California. But by the 90s it had grown massively. Currently Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the US by population, and is largest by geographic area, as its over 500square miles, more than either LA or New York. The desert here is too hard and rocky to build very tall buildings, so we build out instead of up.

Jeffrey Conway

The actress Janet Leigh who plays Marion Crane is actually the mother of Jamie Leigh Curtis.

KC

Knowing it's a serial killer movie is one of the big spoilers. It's made to be a movie about a woman stealing money and running off.

Mike FromOz

Agreed, and there are fewer cultural references to pick up on that would spoil the movie for them. It's an absolutely brilliant film.

Crystal

and if you do Strangers , please please please do the insanely fun & touching spoof Throw Mama from the Train, so great!

JayF

I would approve of this reaction but I'll have to check with mother first...

Data Cable

"It's not just inflation, like, conversion, it's also, just, cost of things are much less too, right." Umm, that's inflation.

Jeffrey

My dad introduced me to this movie when I was wee. I still watch it every Halloween in his memory.

Helly R

Loads of Hitchcock is great but I think you guys would really like Rear Window.

Itbewhatitbe

FYI $40,000 in 1960 is equal to approx $425,000 today

Anthony Perkins son, Oz Perkins, is a very talented horror director himself, known for Longlegs, I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House, and The Black coats Daughter. He also starred in the 2003 family comedy "Quigley" where he partnered with Gary Busey who plays a rich bully who dies and is resurrected as a white Pomeranian.

MPH

This movie is so damn good.

2026-09-05 05:00 The psycho sequels are interesting, each movie goes in a really different direction

HeyHeyJK

To be honest, pretty much every film he directed prior to "Psycho" is great, "Rear Window" being one of them, for sure.

Lola Lirola

His best role ever is on Legally Blonde and I will die on this hill!

Happy Hanukkah

"I have two cats and I don't know how to ride a horse." Which makes me feel really left out when the cats go horseback riding! "We're watching this for the sake of just having seen it." Eat your spinach! :-) "Please subscribe." And if you don't, that's OK. Enjoy your shower. "Have we ever seen a movie that takes place in Phoenix, Arizona? It's almost always New York or California." Consider this my request for Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995). 3:44 3:59 4:12 Yep. Hitchcock famously has cameos in most of his movies.

rictus grin

the title sequence was made by Saul Bass he created a bunch of famous opening credits for Hitchcock and in the 70's directed the very interesting Scifi movie Phase IV

Happy Hanukkah

When I was just a little girl I asked my mother, "What shall we watch?"

Kelley Leary

Another Star Trek connection is the actor who played the used car salesman was in ST:TNG’s 3rd season episode “The Survivors” as Kevin Uxbridge.

Michael Nemo

I've really enjoyed all of Oz Perkins movies. I think his movies are great and have such strong visual style. I esp. love I am the Pretty Thing - I find it so unsettling.

Jeff K.

Oh, one other fun fact: Anthony Perkins, who played Norman Bates, co-wrote a whodunnit with the legendary Stephen Sondheim called "The Last of Sheila." That movie is the biggest inspiration for the movie Glass Onion (which is part of why Stephen Sondheim is one of the people playing Among Us with Blanc at the beginning).

Galactic Cannibl

Norman is based after Ed Gain a very gruesome person

Athenor

Simone was channeling her inner stop animal abuse advertising voice with that subscribe plea 😆

Dan Holmes

im glad george appreciated the expo dump at the end, many don't get why it was so cool and necessary at the time :)

JoeNotCharles

I think the info dump over-explains things we already saw, but the final monologue and the look on Norman's face is SO GOOD that it's worth having the info-dump to get there.

JoeNotCharles

I saw one of the ads Hitchcock put out for the movie (I think it was a bonus feature on a DVD or something). He was basically giving a tour of the house set, saying, "This is the house that the killer lived in. This is the stairway the victim fell down - let's climb it! And here at the top, is the room where... Well, you'll have to see the film to find out." So the exact details weren't AS famous, but it was definitely marketed as a movie about a killer.

Darin Foat

Echoing a couple of other people on here, you should absolutely check out Rear Window. It's incredibly fun.

Scot Acocks

Yep, ol' Ed Gein was one of the most influential people of the 20th Century.

Scot Acocks

Yes! One of the most underrated sequels of all-time and it definitely doesn't get the attention from reactors as it should. Psycho III is even pretty good. Honestly, it's a solid trilogy.

Michael Nemo

Not a fan of III. I am however a big fan of IV. Don't shame me!

HeyHeyJK

One of my favorite movie trivia questions I like to throw out - based solely on the conversation with the sheriff and his wife - is "What color dress was Norman Bates' mother buried in?". Since it's a B&W film, people are stumped unless they actually remember the color the sheriff's wife mentions. Also ... FUN FACTS time! When the guard at the end takes the blanket into Norman, another guard is standing outside the door. That's Ted Knight, who was the uptight Judge at the Country Club in "Caddyshack" and the egotistical anchorman in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". Another, much less fun fact (at least for anyone reading this) is that I live about a 5 minute walk from the car dealership where Marion swaps cars. It's a BMW dealership side lot now, and about 5 minutes from Universal Studios in LA, where they shot much of the film.

Jon Johns

The prequel TV series is not that bad at all

algi

"I came up with an original idea for a serial murderer." "Is it original or is it Ed Gein again?"

Reece Chapford

Psycho 2 is much better than it has any right being! Please watch Psycho 2.

Richard

I think Hitchcock himself was not a fan of sequels but Psycho II is definitely worth a watch
