Simone as Zhukov is just perfect 😍 10/10.

One of my absolute favourite modern comedies. All the actors nail every single line, the laughs per minute is off the charts. As far as I know the broad strokes of how things play out here actually did more or less happen. Stalin did lie there dying for a while with everyone trying their best not be responsible while also cementing their own power. The Soviet Union really was a fascinating (although brutal) part of history Also Jason Isaacs as Zhukov is cinematic perfection

One of the best, so glad its finally here

Oh I love this movie. It's absolutely brilliant. Except for the mass-shooting at the funeral (Which is fiction), almost every single event depicted here actually happened. They took artistic liberty to fit it all in the same timeframe and modified details as needed, but the broad strokes were all there. For example, the re-doing the concert DID happen. However it was about 10 years before Stalin's death, and they actually needed to get a THIRD composer. The first was too scared to perform like we see here, and the second was too drunk. The pianist Maria Yudina didn't need to be bribed to perform -- like you said that would have put her fellow musicians at risk -- but Stalin himself gave her 20,000 rubles afterwards. She sent her famous note in response to that, informing him that she had donated his gift to the church and praying for his redemption. There's still some debate over how she got away with that: Some say Stalin just laughed it off, others that he was angry but since she was his favorite pianist he let it slide. All the bit about not being able to find any good doctors is because "The Doctor's Plot" had started a short while before Stalin died. It was a plan to frame Jewish doctors in Moscow for various plots, to justify the large-scale deportation of all Jews in the Soviet Union to camps and settlements in the East. If that sounds familiar, well.... after Stalin's death the Soviet Union quietly let the matter drop. Believe it or not, Beria was WORSE than portrayed here. I can't even go into all of the details. The only historical inaccuracy, so to speak, was showing Molotov badmouthing Polina when he had to 'keep up the act'. Even while she was imprisoned he remained fiercely loyal to her, and even though he never had the power to free her he never condemned her either (He noticeably ABSTAINED from the votes about her, instead of letting the vote be carried unanimously). At Stalin's real-life funeral, which happened to be on Molotov's birthday, other members of the Presidium asked what he wanted as a gift and he said he wanted Polina returned. She was released a week later.

So then, this is North Korea now, yes?

Highly, highly recommend In The Loop. It's another Armando Iannuci film and *maybe* the best film about the Iraq war.

It's funny to see the difference in reaction between the 'Untouchables' and this. George reading trivia on the Untouchables was like "Oh... Most of this movie was made up" vs "A vast majority of this was true and we actually had to tone it down in places to make it seem less unrealistic" 😅 I know we shouldn't badger you guys to watch a certain movie, especially if it doesn't win a poll, but I am glad you decided to go ahead and watch it anyway. I guess it's what separates us from the animals. Except the badger.

So the thing with death counts of the Soviet Union is you have to consider the source. The West and the Soviets were (and still are) in a constant war largely fought through propaganda. So things like the 60 million deaths under Stalin are likely inflated and probably contain literally everyone who died during his time as ruler, whether through state action or not. This, of course, is in no way a defense of Stalin, who is in the running for greatest mass murderer in history. But you have to take things with a grain of salt. As for the common citizens in the funeral processions, many people of the Soviet Union regarded Stalin as a great leader and mourned his passing. Again, the power of propaganda on display. Really glad you guys watched this after it did consistently well on polls but never able to grab first place.

I don't know if it's a perfect movie, but it's one I can't find any faults with--writing, directing, acting (including the improvisation) all meshing together flawlessly thanks to the editing. So happy to see you two laughing and wincing at it, which is the only sane response to the insanity.

Definitely recommend watching the Director’s previous film, In The Loop (2009), a similar funny irreverent political comedy (not as dark but equally good). As well as more Martin McDonaugh’s films (he did In Bruges) like Three Billboards and Banshees of London Inisherin. Lots of great dark comedies to watch for the channel!

I recommend you guys watch The Karate kid part II since you guys liked the first one 🙏

Part 3 isn’t as good but if the get to cobra Kai hopefully it will help

History Buffs on YT did a great breakdown of this movie, and its historical accuracies.

2:10 Did Stalin make phone calls? This happened all the time. Stalin often directly called more or less famous people who were unrelated to politics. 3:06 Big lists Several hundred people at the peak of the repressions were signed off by Stalin and members of the Politburo. 3:10 60 million. An obvious exaggeration originating from the following. Firstly, in 1937, a census was conducted. Stalin didn’t like that there were too few people in his country. The results of the census were not published. The organizers of the census were executed. The next census in 1939 “found” the missing millions of people. However, after World War II, censuses showed that millions of people had disappeared without a trace. This allowed Western researchers to make grim assumptions about their fate. Furthermore, the repressed were not only those executed. They included people relocated from their land to undeveloped territories, those deprived of civil and voting rights (though there wasn’t much choice anyway), people sent to the Gulag, and wealthy peasants whose property was confiscated. If you add them all up, the figures reach tens of millions. But this calculation is extremely inaccurate because, at times, ordinary criminals were also deprived of civil rights, and many exiled to the Gulag were later repressed again, and so on. All this complicates the calculations. It is known that about 700,000 people were sentenced to execution by special councils (the majority in 1937-38). About 4 million more were sent to labor camps. But it’s important to understand that not everyone even made it to the camps in Kolyma, and those who did often found out that an order to reconsider their sentence towards execution had arrived ahead of them. So the number of those executed exceeds a million, and those repressed in various ways, according to conservative estimates, number at least 7 million. 6:47 Re-recording for Stalin Yes, this happened. 9:04 How was the film received in Russia? It was not. It was banned from screening. As they say, there’s nothing to add. 17:30 Stalin's death wasn't fast He was dying for several days. But on the second day it was 100% that even in the case of his survival he suffered such a damage that ruling the country by him was impossible. 19:40 Killing of the staff This did not happen. Pure legend. This was related to the fact that the circumstances of Stalin’s death were classified, and some details began to emerge only in the ’70s, then in the ‘90s. Stalin’s autopsy report was declassified in 2014 (!). In the absence of information, his death became surrounded by urban legends, including the execution of the staff. 25:40 The crowd crush at Stalin’s funeral This is a fact. However, there was no shooting. The number of victims is either unknown or classified. Estimates vary from hundreds to thousands.

Definitely seconding the Karate Kid Part II. I had never ever seen it before, but caught it recently overseas on a trip since it was on TV, and I actually really, really liked it. It was definitely a bit cheesy, but I really loved the setting, even though it was quite obviously Hawaii, and not Okinawa. Part II is very charming though, and I liked the story for Mr. Miyagi especially

I’ve never seen you guys cackle so much! Great reaction to one of my personal favorite movies! Another commenter said that it’s hard to call this the perfect movie but it’s one that you can’t really find a fault in which I definitely agree with. It’s absolutely brilliant even if it takes some artistic liberties.

Magnificent Gojira

"How was this movie recieved in Russia?" - it was banned. There was no theatrical release

MASSIVE hidden gem... a comedy about UK terrorism, and it's brilliantly funny. Should also recommend What We Do in the Shadows (TV)

Weird that no one ever portrays Stalin with hi right hand all shriveled and tiny, as it was.
