And now I’ll be saying “That’s the Chicago way” after literally every sentence for the rest of the day.

Matthew Johnson

George and Simone said "Let's do some good!" before putting together this genius thumbnail

Matt O'Keefe

No warrant needed at the federal post office for federal agents.

Brian Sittler

Cimone if you like Robert De Niro that much then please watch Midnight Run. I don’t usually beg but I’ll beg for this damnit lol.

Jeff K.

The movie definitely played VERY fast and loose with actual history. Which does make sense when you factor in that this movie is an adaptation of an old TV show, so it’s two mediums away from reality. Also: Eliot’s last line about having a drink now that Prohibition is over is kinda sad, really, given Ness spiraled deep into alcoholism later in life.

ShōNuff3K

Can you imagine watching this movie and then watching the remake of Cape Fear?

Matthew Johnson

Simone says "That's Patricia Clarkson!" and I realize it is time once again to beat the drum for a reaction to The Station Agent, in which she is excellent.

Matthew Johnson

YES YES YES, this is an absolute classic and one of my favorite scripts ever.

Jeff K.

It would be especially fitting while they watch Better Call Saul, since Vince Gilligan has said that the dynamic between Grodin and De Niro in that movie is the biggest influence in how they wrote the relationship between Jimmy and Mike.

Matt O'Keefe

Now you two need to do Dances with Wolves. I know you would love it. Kevin Costner's best work and directed by him.

Ken Schneyer

Camera: [Ornate, 19th century style hotel lobby with one (1) scantily clad woman visible.]. George: “He lives in a brothel?” I love you guys.

Capone, ness, and nitti r real people, but story is fiction.

Despite all the praise that this film gets, I never managed to connect with it. It's unengaging for me. Certainly not a bad movie, but nothing exceptional. I can't point to any one thing, but I've never felt the urge to rewatch it myself or recommend it to friends. The story is pretty much 100% fiction, despite having some real characters. None of the "Untouchables" were killed during the entire time they were active, and they also were not the ones pursuing the tax angle. That was an entirely separate department. What Ness and his team did was disrupt the bootlegging activities themself to hamper Capone's day-to-day activities and interfere with his ability to run the overall organization. The closest part to real life was the jury switch, and even that didn't happen like this. What they did was switch the jury POOL, the candidates that the various lawyers and judges will review to select the jury from. Since Capone had access to the original jury pool list, by swapping to a different pool he lost all the material he had prepared to bribe and threaten them with. This was obviously done before the trial began, because it's a lengthy process to select a jury and each member is reviewed for potential conflicts of interest, predispositions, etc. The other thing which was almost-kinda-accurate was the lawyer attempting to plead guilty on Capone's behalf. Obviously that never happened itself, and a lawyer can't do that, but one crucial part of the case to convict Capone was his earlier attempts to actually pay his back taxes. His lawyer at the time had submitted a letter with info on his income, and that was later used as evidence to prove that he did in fact have this income. His new defense at the time argued that a lawyer could not confess on behalf of his client, but this letter was admitted into evidence anyway.

Jeff K.

Yeah, with Nitti in particular, it's pretty much entirely fiction. I love this movie but it's wild how far from reality they got. Nitti has a much more accurate depiction in the movie Road to Perdition, where he's played by Stanley Tucci. Nitti obviously didn't get thrown off a roof by Ness; he went to prison for tax evasion but was out pretty quickly, and took over as the boss of Capone's organization while Al was locked up.

Actuarial Lurker

Please watch the series Boardwalk Empire- masterful acting, pacing, cinematography- covers the same characters and Prohibition but with realism

HeyHeyJK

That whole scene with the baby carriage on the steps is a direct homage to a similar scene from the 1925 Russian silent film "Battleship Potemkin". Look it up on YouTube and you'll see how much De Palma pulled from it. He's a master of homage, especially nods to Hitchcock in his films "Body Double" and "Dressed to Kill".

David Crabtree

You mean this was a fictional Hollywood movie for the sole purpose of entertainment, and not a documentary? Who knew!

PIG

I have to agree! I liked it a lot as a kid but something feels kinda soapy about it as I got older. Not saying that movies don’t embellish, but it seems overt in this story. It’s too corny at times. Not a bad movie, it just feels more shallow compared to other serious movies.

Brian Sittler

Love that connection with the breaking bad universe which is another one of my favorites.

JoeE

Relax, have a cream soda

Trevor Rotan

Finally getting to this classic.

Brian Sittler

Don’t say a word to me, Sydney….

Simon Pegged Me

Thirded. The 1991 remake of Cape Fear is excellent. It's almost a horror movie for those of us with tender sensibilities.

Gary Poussard

Field Of Dreams should be the next Costner film you guys watch.

Chef

Now watch intouchables ya dinguses, and get some napkins.

Stephanie

You should watch A Perfect World with Kevin Costner. It's directed by Clint Eastwood and it's Kevin Costner's best performance.

Alexrandom

Jimmy Hoffa is portrayed in "the Irishman"" by Martin Scorsese. Great film ! If you have seen at least a few gangster films and De Niro films. It very much feels like an end of career movie and an homage to the genre as a whole . Hope you guys watch more Scorsese. Killers of the flower moon is incredible too. Even though these movies are very long I think they're not boring for one second.

Jeff K.

Fingers crossed...

Mango

With all the the De Niro love, Midnight Run is one of his best and a criminally underknown film.

Brandon Meng

Was searching this recommendation before commenting it myself. Dances with Wolves is an all-time great.

Tom M

Not sure if Connery has ever done an accent. You mentioned Red October but he was also supposed to be Spanish in Highlander with his thick Scottish accent. Lol.

DeadmanJAX

Me and my dad (who recently passed) used to watch this movie alot..he loved it

John Lambert

With all the awe towards De Niro in this video shown by both of you, you really need to react to Raging Bull and King of Comedy. Preferably on the same day.

Maiki

Sorry for your loss, may he rest in peace.

Foamy

"master of homage" is an interesting way to spell thief.

HeyHeyJK

It absolutely is. Such a great film and De Niro is hilarious in it (was that his first comedic role? I think it might have been).

Rachel W

God, Kevin Costner was so freaking hot.

Joe Lazarus

You guys should do a poll on Robert De Niro. And I agree -as much as I liked Costner and Garcia... Robert De Niro and Sean Connery stole the show!!!

Angela D. Mitchell

Midnight Run is AMAZING, hilarious, and unexpectedly moving. A total classic and the cast is fantastic. Grodin was such a good counterpoint to DeNiro.
