PIG

“What are you looking at?”

“Oh. The silent majesty of a winter’s morn. The clean, cool chill of the holiday air. And an asshole in his bathrobe emptying a chemical toilet into my sewer.”

Andrew Roach

If you haven't seen it yet the other classic Christmas movie you must watch is 'A Christmas Story.'

Michael

the sideshow bob impression was spot on.

Baron Imhoof

I worked in small-town radio for three decades, and people started calling in Christmas song requests by mid-November. It's taken me five years of retirement to recover my appreciation for most, but I'll die happy if I never hear Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer again.

Tenwyn

I think right after Thanksgiving (end of Nov) is the right time to start singing christmas songs and putting up decorations

Vwlss Nvwls

I love pointing out how old I am by saying "I saw this one in the theater." I was not expecting much because European Vacation was not all that great. This is possibly my favorite Christmas movie, because I make sure to watch it every year. It is hard to choose a favorite though, because I do the same for "A Christmas Story" and "Miracle on 34th Street" (the original).

Vwlss Nvwls

It was his wife's Aunt Edna that was on top of the car in the first movie. :) The neighbors represented a social disease back then called Yuppies. Non one liked yuppies, so do not feel bad for them. :)

Vwlss Nvwls

Decorations are just that, so what does it matter if they are themed to a particular holiday or time of year. If you like the decorations, you put them up when they make you happy to have them up. imho

michael denny

in united states Christmas stuff is too early before thanksgiving or last Thursday of November

David Zabel

I was surprised Simone didn't recognize Clark's co-worker as Chandler's boss in Friends. Also, Rusty is played be Johnny Galecki who was Leonard in The Big Bang Theory.

Stephanie

Clark's co-worker was also in King of Queens (Doug's boss O'Boyle) and in one episode of Home Improvement.

Stephanie

The one Christmas song I hate with passion is Last Christmas. I denied singing along with it at my last year in school and I turn the volume down if it comes up on the radio. 😬

REDR58

People have stuff up for Christmas in October around here. I don’t turn on any Christmas lights until the day after Thanksgiving!

REDR58

This is correct. I like it all from then and through December but much more than that and I get sick of it.

Grandalf

I watched Home Alone with you guys last night, and it reminded me that you guys still need to watch UNCLE BUCK (anything w John Candy really). Actually, make it a blanket recommendation for any John Hughes film. I'll recommend SAY ANYTHING first.

Stephanie Bedworth

I think my least favorite christmas tune is that Mariah Carey monstrosity. All I Want for Christmas is You? Horrifying. It's followed closely by Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.

sarCC

There are people who hate Xmas songs with every fiber of their being... and then there are people who have never worked retail in December.

REDR58

They need to watch more Cameron Crowe films, including Say Anything and Singles.

REDR58

In the Chevy Chase “Vacation” movie series, the only consistent casting of a particular character are Chevy Chase (“Clark”), Beverly D'Angelo, (“Ellen”), Randy Quaid (“Eddie”) and Miriam Flynn (“Catherine”). The kids (always “Rusty” and “Audrey”) are various teen-aged kids and always played by different actors between movies.

Grandalf

Going to chalk that up to senility. Not sure which Hughes movie I'm thinking of then, but I did just rewatch VANILLA SKY the other day.

akaTheBARON Tokyo Drift

"It's drinking the water!" I wanna say is Simone hitting us with a fat slobberknocker of a Simpson's reference? Huge it true! But I was wondering if Simone was going to recognize the son, Rusty, as a child Johnny Galecki, aka Leonard from The Big Bang Theory.

REDR58

Yes, Todd and Margot are definitely stereotypical yuppies.

AJ Lynch

Brian Doyle-Murray is Bill Murray's older brother. Bill took over for Chevy as members of Saturday Night. You can see a lot of mannerisms in Brian as you might see in Bill in this movie.

ScottishSammo

The modern sequel 'Vacation' with Ed Helms as a grown up Rusty, I don't think it gets enough credit. I thought it was really funny and had some memorable moments. Hopefully you can put it on a poll in the future 😁

David Lonewolf Wright

I still find it wild that they made a joke about the Union Carbide plant leak in India from 1984. I never made the link, but it does seem to fit that Clark is sort of a live action Homer Simpson (which did debut as it's own show in 1989... as a Christmas episode).

China Andronicus

Yes, Grandpa Art is the quiet juror with the glasses in 12 Angry Men who is one of the last to be convinced, and Uncle Lewis voices the mad scientist in Nightmare Before Christmas.

Beddoe

You saw a little bit of Betty Boop in 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'. I'm a fan of the second Vacation film 'European Vacation' (1985), seems like I'm the only one. Also, 'Beddoe' rhymes with 'meadow'.

Maarten Martens

Wow that final bit was unhinged. What was the big thing about the squirrel, it went full cartoon. This was peak 80s film.

REDR58

You never want to staple anything or nail through roof shingles, certainly not for installing lights. The Griswold house is a set with an interior on a fake “street” which has been used in a number of movies. It was also the same building used for Wanda and Vision’s home in “WandaVision”: https://houseandhistory.com/national-lampoons-christmas-vacation-house/ Pull-down attic stairs are not ideal. They are too narrow to carry large objects up and are often very flimsy. They are the cheapest way to get access to an attic short of a simple removable panel in the ceiling that needs a separate ladder to access. I’ve lived in houses with pull-down stairs and I’m glad this one doesn’t have one. You can open them from inside but it’s not easy or safe. It’s just “stuck” for comedy purposes. Proper venting is essential for attics, though certainly not that large unless you have a huge attic. If the attic isn’t ventilated you will get water condensing on the underside of the roof or cause ice dams to form in the winter, both of which are bad. Ideally the attic should be the same temperature as the outside air with insulation in its floor to keep the heat inside the rest of the building. You are not supposed to heat unfinished attics. Eddie and Clark are drinking the eggnog using glasses from Wally World from the first vacation movie.

The majority of people are more ready for Christmas after the day of Halloween, and that hurts because for me Halloween is my favorite holiday, I mean couldn’t they wait for another week later. So for me November 1st is too early to celebrate Christmas.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

I got the impression you guys thought this was the second Vacation movie, and weren't aware of European Vacation. It's fine to skip it and still enjoy Christmas Vacation because it only really references the first movie. But it's not bad, probably my fourth favorite Vacation, and I'd say worth a watch. My third favorite is the newest Vacation with Ed Helms and Christina Applegate, I don't think it did well In theaters but I thought it was really funny, and kept the spirit of the originals, I think some thought it was a reboot but it's actually a sequel, definitely recommend. We can all just pretend Vegas Vacation never happened. What happens in .., you know the rest. It was just bad. And I think there might be a spin off sequel or something but I don't know. Also, another plug for a Krampus reaction before Christmas, I think you'd really like it, it's now my favorite Christmas horror (with a smidge of comedy) movie. Oh damn, just thinking your schedule is probably full, well, hopefully next year, or whenever you just feel like watching a nice comfy horror film with a festive atmosphere.

Brian's Dog

Just watching the intro here and I hear about this famous scene, and I'm curiously bewildered because there's like 30 of those.

Eric Mc Daniel

yeah that threw me because when they did the original Vacation, they said that they were told the sequel is even better and knowing the sequel was European Vacation, I was like "whaaaaat?!" lol.

Andrew Roach

Also Brian was in Groundhog Day with his brother Bill, he was the mayor. He would also be in the classic Seinfeld episode 'Bubble Boy' but I forget if he shared the screen with Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Gary Fixler

Hear hear! I've been considering starting the Halloween season at the start of September, because one month is just not enough anymore, especially with all the fancy Wi-Fi lighting, and 3D printed decorations that I keep adding to every year now. I'm also considering letting November be a transitional month, where the decorations go through a month-long conversion from Halloween to Christmas, being like Nightmare Before Christmas in the middle.

Gary Fixler

I grew up in a house with a pull down, but the steps didn't slide out; they unfolded. My buddy and I played hide and seek once (that's not a euphemism), and I spent an hour not being able to find him, and he was up in the attic. He went up, and pulled the stairs up behind him, and was playing with my old toys for an hour 😆

Gary Fixler

I love all Christmas songs. Mom owned a holiday themed gift shop all through my childhood, and I helped out, built things for it, and helped decorate. She had stacks of Christmas CDs, probably a few hundred in all. There's so much Christmas music out there. I never got tired of any of it.

Wayne Kryka

Definitely see European Vacation

Cameron Kerby

I’ve worked retail for far too long in my adult life and I still love Christmas music. You’re just a CUNTrarian.

Cinebinge

Hi Cameron. While we appreciate and want to hear the opinions of all our patrons, we do first and foremost require everyone to show eachother basic respect and to help keep this community pleasant for all. Unwarranted attacks and insults are not only unwelcomed but will result in a ban.

Grandalf

Nah, I know those are Hughes films, I think I've just always been wrong about that one, like when you discover that you've been wrong about a song's lyrics and afterwards you still hear the wrong words every time you hear it.🤣

Logan Kerlee

I'll be watching this one sometime soon - but not right now! Just got finished watching Home Alone 2 and I had an incredible time with that one! :) This one'll be funny, I'm sure! - but not in the same way.

Redrum Ritual

Just finished the watch along and I don't get it. There much better picks like Scrooge with Bill Murray, A Christmas Story, Terrifer 3, Muppets Christmas Carol, but this one won????? National Lampoon's Vacation and European Vacation was way better anyways. There was funny shit here and there and some trying too hard to be funny. By the way, the little girl was also in Fatal Attraction. If I'm not mistaken, when this was released in the UK, I think it was renamed National Lampoon's Winter Holiday instead of Christmas Vacation. Probably because the movie wasn't coming out before Christmas? I don't know.
