Merry Christmas!

Keith Brown

"Return to Tomorrow" has the Kirk "Risk" speech which is acting Shatner using all his quirks!

Mike FromOz

I thought it was going to be Moon, but I forgot the time difference delay. But, hey, it's still Christmas over here! Going to settle in for some leftovers and Trek 🤗

John M.

THAT'S WHY WE'RE ABOARD HER.

Actuarial Lurker

So Kirk has to confront his fluid gender identity in the late 1960s- quite progressive!

Data Cable

I kept watching for Simone to recognize Dr. Mulhall.

Mark Barger

Simone, I love at how much fun you have with the cheesy moments and George, I love how you can delightfully over-analyze anything. What’s important is that you both are being real. Merry Christmas to you both!

Brandon

That's Diana Muldaur in Return to Tomorrow. She eventually played Dr. Pulaski in season 2 of TNG... and people were way too hard on her character.

Alan Kobb

Actually, "A Private Little War" alludes to a key moment in 20th century history when a private little civil war in Asia turned into a multinational war in Vietnam. It was going on right as this episode was airing, so, of course, it was Star Trek's commentary on the war. During parts of the 2nd season, George Takei had a part in the film The Green Berets, which was also about the Vietnam War, but since it did not have any Mugato beasts it was inferior to Star Trek. Maybe the opposite of Beefcake is something like "Georgecake"? Just kidding...

Monica Alarcon

So these two episodes have the first appearances of Dr. M'Benga and Dr. Pulaski (but not quite yet), both of whom will become series regulars... And it's interesting seeing M'Benga here knowing all of his backstory and his connection with Nurse Chapel...

Monica Alarcon

And Sulu's Back to the Mr. Sulu Show!!! As the theme song goes "Suluuuu he Star of the shooooow, Other guuuys just along for the riiide"

Robert Elliott

Yes in A private Little War was commentary on US in Vietnam. And in Return To Tomorrow in the words of Possum Rob from Accidentally Derivative Studios “Kirk has to Kirk”. I enjoy that you two are watching TOS. Simone is more OK and embrace the silliness. I think George can see the potential and it’s a miss. A lot of the writing shifts due to the frame work of studio’s restrictions. I have changed some I didn’t like to one’s I now enjoy. George I feel is expecting Season One writing but there are still many good episodes this season. If you interested in fun takes on TOS the Possum Rob reviews are hilarious. Thanks

Opposite of beefcake: wiry, or lean? Lacks the pizazz of beefcake though. Definitely NOT cheesecake, however.

Badger

TOS is definitely not the worst Title music..lol

Robert Evans

not onlywas 'A Private Little War' a commentary on the Vietname war in the original screenplay the leader of the village folk who deals with the Klingons is decribed as looking like Ho Chi Minh

Actuarial Lurker

From its original broadcast "Private Little War" was seen as a thinly veiled critique about Viet Nam, especially since the Tet offensive occurred on Jan 30, 1968 where there was a cease fire and the North attacked and drove the US/South back significantly and this aired on Feb 2, 1968 a few days later

Actuarial Lurker

Simone: The woman who inhabits Kirk's body is Diana Muldaur who appears in Season 2 of TNG as the new ship Doctor Pulaski replacing Beverly Crusher (no spoilers)

Actuarial Lurker

Mugato beasts are definitely the deciding factor

Gaius Frakking Baltar

George Takei missed a big chunk of season 2 because he was off filming a 1968 Vietnam war movie called The Green Berets. The movie was essentially a pro-war propaganda screed starring John Wayne (highly ironic, given Takei's very public and vociferous antiwar stance at the time). Takei played a hard-bitten ARVN special forces officer, here's one of his scenes from the movie: "First, I kill all stinking Cong!" https://clip.cafe/the-green-berets-1968/my-home-in-hanoi-ill-go-home-too-someday/

Stuart Sutcliffe

Having not seen "Return to Tomorrow" but having seen Buffy "I Robot, You Jane," I can see the plot twist coming. Joss Whedon is apparently a hardcore Trekkie.

Ron

In addition to Return to Tomorrow, Diana Muldaur was also President of the Television Arts and Sciences 1984-1985. As for an antonym of beefcake, since beefcake is the masculine version of cheesecake, perhaps cream puff, fruitcake, or cupcake?

Simon Pegged Me

That took me aback. I didn't remember him from this episode.

GAB

Besides later being cast in season 2 of TNG, Diana Muldaur appears as a different character in season 3 of TOS. I don't think that's a spoiler.

Quick question/comment on the Star Trek TOS collection. I'm new here as a Patron, and am now watching the TOS episodes (the remastered digital versions) on one screen while you are clearly watching the original TOS episodes on my other screen. This dramatically demonstrates how much better the remastered episodes look, and the phenomenal job they did with the remastering in matching the look and feel of TOS episodes. So I feel badly for you. The remastered versions of TOS are SO much more fun to look at. You should give them a try if you haven't, and if not, why not?

Sergio Meira

I understand George's judgment of the episode as 'us watching things happening to the characters', but let me defend this episode a little bit. (a) How could it be different if you are dealing with a much more advanced species? I'll bet your smartphone would look like it has 'new powers all the time' (oh Wikipedia! oh Games! oh Movies! oh AI chats! oh messaging and phone services! oh pay your taxes! order food! buy books, or anything! etc...); if you had introduced it in a 1960's Star Trek TOS episode, I suppose George would be making the same criticism of it ('whenever the plot needs it this thing develops a new app!'). (b) The ideas in the story are, to me, quite interesting. A new crisis after nuclear annihilation is averted -- arrogance makes us think we're gods? (Doesn't Warhammer have a species that kind of thinks like that?) Transferring to bodies while keeping the original personality intact (so nurse Chapel can have 'unheard-of intimacy' with Spock)? The only other place I remember seeing this idea was Black Mirror. I can see how these things might be seen as contrivances to get the plot moving. But they're so, well, interesting to think about! And then there's Spock smiling, Kirk being the Seducer(tm) again, but this time only when Sargon is in his body (so when he comes back his partner looks kind of disappointed), Scotty just wanting to go over the diagrams for a FTL propulsion engine the size of a walnut... I agree this is not the best TOS episode, but frankly, at least to me, it's far from the bottom.

Sergio Meira

I guess they're going for historical accuracy: Let's have the same experience (as far as the physical stimulus is concerned) as people did in the 60's when TOS episodes originally aired. I agree the remastered versions are more pleasant, but I can value the idea of faithfulness to the original experience, too.

StonyD

How does listing a spoiler and then posting "No Spoilers" work?

Actuarial Lurker

Since Simone has seen TNG how is that a spoiler....

punterjoe

Since Vulcans are vegans, would that make Spock a "soycake"? - Or at least HALF soycake? 😉

gfixler

I get where George is coming from, thinking in terms of good storytelling, but I still find it intriguing to see the characters react to not having control. It happens to all of us (in crap jobs, with bad partners, etc.), and to me, it's part of life, and there is storytelling just in having to brace for that, and to live through it. As dumb as it sounds, things like this make me think back to Dinosaurs, the sitcom in the 90s that was like a standard sitcom, except everyone was dinosaurs (people in, frankly, pretty impressive animatronic suits). The grandmother reads a bedtime story to the baby in one episode, and the guy in the story doesn't learn the story's lesson, and the baby yells "What?! That's a stupid story! The guy didn't learn anything!" and the grandmother says "No, but you did." The baby's eyes go wide, and he says "Wow... That was a great story!" I think of it like that. The characters didn't have agency this time, but we're watching that, feeling things we never do, from a situation we never see from these people, learning stuff about ourselves from those feelings, and from how the characters react, thinking about how we'd operate in such a situation. I agree. This episode is the kind that sticks with me a lot longer than some with much better "storytelling" aspects. I end up stopped at a red light, thinking of all the ways to combat such god-level foes.

Ben Stiller is a huge Star Trek ToS fan - Mugatu! ❤️🖖

SpankTheMonk

Enterprise for me takes the cake as the “worst” one for many reasons. However not so much because it is bad quality product

Love the white ape tribute, at least to me, Princess of Mars published 50 years before!

While that episode is NOT in my favorite TOS episodes list, it IS the BEST speech Kirk gives in all of TOS.

Brent bmc_comix

Bones is always a good doc!!!! Hush your mouth Simone!!!! ;) love you guys, but McCoy is the best!!!!

Crystal

I'm surprised Simone didn't recognize young Dr. Pulaski!

Angzarr

For the opposite of beefcake... Quornbatter? Sounds gross.

Rav Low

"TOS is the worst theme" is only something someone who has blocked the Enterprise theme from their memory would say. To be fair "It's been a loooooong tiiiiime~"

Marcus Hicks

With all that ham, you can see why there were no Jewish people on the Enterprise.
