Now to decide if I can wait for a week every 2 episodes or if I wait and binge them all.

Stugotz

"He's the only Japanese actor Hollywood casts" Ken Watanabe - "Am I a joke to you?"

Balmung

George - A lot of the names are different, and plot points change as well, but I would not recommend looking up the actual history at this stage.

Joe Concepts

I really tried with this show, but I just couldn't get into it. People rave about it, so I gave it a few episodes, but I was having trouble caring about any of it. The production value, the "epic" nature of the show is impressive on some level. But the characters just weren't grabbing me.

Logan Kerlee

Awesome! Happy to see this posted on here, early in the day. :D

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

This series is so well constructed that it gets better each episode. Hiroyuki Sanada really deserves the onslaught of praise he gets here - same with Anna Sawai and Tadanobu Asano. Fascinating period of history too, and James Clavell’s books are also terrific even if they make for a long read haha.

Jeff K.

I kept hearing people talk about this show and was like, "It can't possibly live up to the hype." And then I watched it, and it blew away any expectations I could have had. Loved it. And hey, it also prompted me to finally play Ghost of Tsushima because I needed more feudal Japan in my life!

KingCorza

I would definitely avoid looking anything up, the overarching story is based on the real life events and follws it closely however the character names have been changed and they embelish parts to make it more dramatic/interesting!

Olli Oja

The show is based on a novel, and basically fully fictional. So checking the history shouldn't cause any spoiling for the show itself I don't think. But I think it's good to be a bit careful.

Mastervodo

Maybe watching Simone's heart flutter and swoon at the incredible love story at the heart of this series is enough for you to try watching it again with them?

Chase Schleich

The Last of Us season 2 starts in April so get your TV show schedule cleared up.

Tay Schumaker

Are the breaks off? Like what happened with BB? Keep having to adjust, but not a huge deal

Jeff K.

I was wondering that too. I watched the first episode on Disney+ and it was behind on the breaks. Gonna try Hulu for the second one to see if that syncs up better for me. EDIT: Dang, same thing. It seems like the version George and Simone are watching doesn't have any of the breaks. Ah well.

Ginger

Yeah, I think I'll sit this one out. ^^ Heard so many good things about it and started watching but one moment 30 minutes into the first episode was so gruesome that I figured I'll pass.

Ciarra Jade

Awesome !! Thank you thank you , I can’t wait to watch after work 🙏 🙏

Opti_Frog

Happy you're both enjoying this spectacular show, and not surprised. 😊 I first saw the actor who plays Mariko-sama in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters where she was good, but in Shōgun she is phenomenal.

Onikaze

oh cool! either forgot or totally missed that you were going to react to this show. it will give me the shove to finish it, saw up to ep 4 or 5. Perhaps after you're finished with the season you could compare and contrast it with the 80's mini series/movie. It has John Rhys Davies(Gimli) as the Spanish Pilot, Rodrigues and Toshiro Mifune as Toronaga.

Tom M

Sigh, might have to get Hulu. I feel a little left out not having seen this and The Bear.

Tom M

It’s on Disney? So what’s the difference between Hulu and Disney?

Philipp Roensch

Will be a first watch for me as well, so I might put down my impressions here :). Episode 1 so far very excited, I like how matter of fact and rude all characters are introduced, and some central motivations are put in place. Would say a very efficient pilot, while we cannot be sure who to root for yet. The show certainly seems to have historic reverence and respect for rules and practices of the time. Great eye for those details in set in costumes, all very nice and practical, while of course cityscapes sometimes must be computer built. I really like the actors so far, giving gravitas and bastardy at the same time. Episode 2 is cooking and heating up while doing it :D. Love how quickly all the factions come out to claim this prisoner, great pace so far. Yabushige (boiler lord) and his loyalty seems to be fluent, but perhaps flexible for the right reasons? Interesting development for the Portuguese/Dutch conflict to escalate, with at least some Japanese in the know now, making this a question of where these old men will draw their line. Now the big lenses and cinematography question, does this look good? There are detailed technical and critical articles out there, but to condense a bit: they used a modern version of an anamorphic lens to fit wide screen subjects into a TV frame, the blur, bokeh and vignettes are intentional to give a close and personal feeling and put the world around characters into distance, unknown or imbalance. Serves the narrative in the beginning and the closed quarters of the courts/boats quite well I think, but (and maybe that is just me) I like a historic epic to actually have wide shots and clear big landscapes. Will see, but I have been distracted by that look in places, would have preferred if it switched for some scenes to allow for grandeur.

Karl Ries

Given how similar some names are to their historical counterpart, there could be some spoilers. If only the common name of the next era in Japanese history is known, they'll at least have a sense of where the show is going. That being said, knowing the endpoint doesnt reveal the twists and turns it takes to get there, which wouldn't be spoiled by going into the history.

Inkpendude

Yeah it sucks but it looks like its just like 2 or 3 seconds, so you have to pause their video a little

p0sthum4n

The map scene in the second episode is so cool.

Ste Rawlings

As a massive fan of Cosmo Jarvis for many years the Aaron Taylor Johnson comparison hurts my feelings a little lol. I get the Tom Hardy comparisons but I've always thought he's more like Oliver Reed in this role personally.

Ste Rawlings

This will be the 5th time i've watched this show. It's so good it made me read a bunch of and about Japanese poetry.

Jeff K.

Do you have Disney+? They're both on there since Disney owns ABC/Hulu/FX/the entire world.

Spacedone

I can definitely see the Oliver Reed comparison now you mention it but I don't think they've really had much experience of Oliver Reed, with the exception of Gladiator, and he was long past his prime by that point. Maybe one day we can get them to check out something like The Devils or The Three/Four Musketeers.

Tay Schumaker

He's for sure Tom Hardy-esque. Especially the voice

LengyelFlo

Just imagine that the previous version of this show that was made in 1980 for TV, there were no subtitles in the first few episodes at all for the Japanese lines because the show focused on the protagonist's POV, so the viewers didn't understand a word just like he didn't either! It was so immersive. Also, if George is interested in the historical background, google for 'William Adams Anjin' - though the story is fiction, but heavily inspired by his life story.

Denashi

It is mentioned in the book, that John had rationed his fruit, during the voyage, so he wasn't hit by scurvy like the rest of crew. Hence his teeth not being as rotten.

m

I know 90 % of people are in it for constant commentary - at least it seems like it sometimes, but personally, I really don't care for any talking over dialogue. Maybe it's neurotic, but for people like myself, having reactors talk over it just yanks me right out of it. Doubly so for subtitles, which I am a big fan of in so many different ways... but most people really can't focus that well on two conversations at once. So yeah, I am fine with that for full reactions. Difficult pleasing everyone, it's just the equivalent if someone you're showing your favorite movies to keeps playing with their phone.

m

dang, made me look up if James Hong died. Still would argue he is the go-to Chinese guy lol

djKENTO

Don’t look into the history until it’s over. These are real people in history and you may spoil things.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Excited to see this one. I remember watching the original mini-series when I was a kid.

Tom M

I used to but paused/canceled it some time ago. I’ll look at it again

Brandon

If anyone hasn't seen "Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan" on Netflix -It's a perfect starting point for anyone that's interested in Japanese history but doesn't know where to start. It's a 6 episode documentary series that gives you input from several different historians. Plus the dramatic recreations of events they shot for it have great production value. It covers a period of around 65 years in the Sengoku era, when all of the different provinces were at constant war, and the period that 'Shogun' takes place in. It covers a few of the real people that characters in Shogun are based on, including Lord Toranaga's real-life counterpart. I'm choosing to be careful about what I say, even though I'm not sure spoiling history is a thing. 😆 Second time watching this. I totally missed that they show us who the spy in the village is so early the first time around. The version they're watching has no black screen where the commercial breaks would be, but I'll live.

Jobbe Smit

It's heavily based on historic events with changed names. A regency of five guys waiting on the son of the former ruler to come of age, that's literally Council of Five Elders that was formed in 1598, two years before the show starts. The timelines match exactly. Studying the time period will 100% infer where the plot is going. It's just the westerner character that's invented and inserted into historical events.

Jobbe Smit

I'd avoid looking up 17th century Japan because this show is heavily based on real history. The Anjin is entirely fictional and his existence obviously changes things but you can read the plot in a history book. Looking up Japanese history up to 1500 though should be fine. As for the dialogue, the entire Japanese part of the show is spoken in what you could call Stage Japanese? It's old fashioned style similar to Shakespearing English?

Brandon

Does anyone here know more about the Sepukku angle of episode 1? The way Toranaga calls it a "waste of life" made me wonder if they're implying there was another way out for the guy other than suicide and he just overdid it with the pride? Or was his own fate sealed and he overdid it by offering his newborn son as well? Either way, the way Lord Ishido smirks in that scene makes him the central villain from the start IMO.

DonkyDave

Thanks for this, enjoying it a lot. Question for George, is Japanese remotely understandable for you or totally incomprehensible?

Tay Schumaker

You should all watch Silence after this. Even if it’s on your own as I doubt it would win any polls or get you many clicks. But it’s set in a similar time, with Portuguese priests coming over to Japan. It’s a phenomenal Scorcese movie starring Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield. It is in a similar vein to this show.

Cinebinge

incomprehensible. but a lot of the words i can read and guess its meaning as its shared with Chinese. much like French to English, if you only speak one but not the other, you can still guess a lot of the writing but not comprehend when spoken.

HansD

George, which version are you guys watching? I can't seem to find any version that stays in sync with yours.

dc

The Anjin isn't *entirely* fictional—he's loosely based on a real person, William Adams.

dc

I knew you guys would like this series. The book is absolutely phenomenal—it's one of my absolute favorites. There are some changes from the book, but that's to be expected—TV is a different medium. The scene where Blackthorne draws the map of the world and talks about the Treaty of Tordesillas is absolute gold. The series only gets better. I agree with Simone that the actor who plays Yabu (boiler man!) has a kind face—I thought the same thing!

Mikeo8575

A possible point of interest for the two of you is that a lot of this show was filmed in BC. The village was built near Ucluelet.

Dee

Thank you, I thought it was me! I was constantly pausing to align them.

Ginger

I imagine it's like when you speak german you kind of understand dutch. Or when you know french, you get a grasp on spanish and maybe some italian.

Graham Bullman

It's really not a problem if you guys aren't commenting much. It's a complex, intense plot, and you have to focus on subtitles as well, so understandable if you get sucked in. 🙂

Graham Bullman

I'm watching on Disney+ in the UK, and it syncs up perfectly. Strangely enough Disney+ is the only thing that does sync for me. Every other show or movie they watch I have to constantly pause to re-sync. lol

BlindPanda

just here to rewatch this show

John

As far as redemption arcs, I will throw out Pryzbylewski from the Wire, in the first episodes, he had shot up his car, fired his gun in the office, and blinded a teenager, and by the end of the show he was a dedicated teacher in an inner city school, protecting his students and acting as a true moral anchor

RabidMango

Throwing shade on Ken Watanabe in the opener there.

dys

Now I'm curious if either of you speak French, especially George since you've said you live in Montreal? I speak a bit of French and understood some things in some stuff you've watched that I couldn't tell whether you picked up on.

dys

The US Disney+ version syncs correctly as well. Kinda wild that Disney has stuff this adult on it but they own Deadpool now so I guess that ship has long since sailed.

Wuju

I absolutley love this show! If you're into that sort of thing, the show's website has a great episode guide, timeline, map, etc. that goes into some of the deeper cultural aspects, historical comparisons (show vs reality), etc.- not to mention all the behind the scenes work that happened to make the costumes and sets more authnetic.

Wrencher86

I got Disney+ specifically for this show. It was worth it.

dys

My one minor gripe in the beginning is the translation convention is a bit confusing. You've got an English main character played by an English actor, where the actor is only ever speaking English (and bits of Japanese) but is variously supposed to be speaking English, Portuguese, and I'd assume Dutch too with his crew. So it really hard to tell what language he's even supposed to be speaking when he instantly switches from swearing privately to himself in presumably English to conversing with a Japanese character in Portuguese where both actors are still speaking English. Doesn't affect the story, and I get why it's done that way; it's much easier to find talented Japanese actors who speak English than Portuguese (close to impossible for the latter), so they had to cast English-speaking Western actors as Portuguese characters too.

Wrencher86

I would have named Yabushige as "The Raven Dude" due to his kick ass raven-feathered vest. He's a character you're going to grow to... enjoy seeing. As you see in episode 1, he's a schemer. And it's frequently entertaining. To the conversation after ep. 1: Yeah, Japanese culture kinda... sucks. At least with regards to any sort of appreciation for or sanctity of life and harsh punishments for social faux pas. Feudal Japan... considerably worse.

dys

Spoke too soon, some of the cuts-to-black are longer in the US Disney+ version, but that's not as hard to re-sync with as if the scenes themselves were edited differently.

Steve Mercier

Argh! Really want to watch this with you, but your copy doesn't have any pauses in-between the story-breaks. Keep losing sync with you. Can you let us know on what platform or streaming network you guys are watching this? If I can get access to it, I'll gladly watch it with you.

dys

I don't have any particular knowledge of Japanese culture of that era or any other, but it seemed to me like Toranaga wasn't personally offended (just annoyed) and wouldn't have demanded he die in a vacuum, but had to observe the rules as a token to the other lords he's playing a dangerous game with.

Kevin

I do NOT recommend looking up the actual history because it is broadly pretty close to the reality (with some name changes, but its easy to guess who is who). Also, its a little confusing but just know that any time a character is speaking english on screen, they are actually speaking Portuguese in the story (except for when his crew mates are speaking to each other in the first half of the first epeisode)

Monster Cat

You have ever seen any movie ever? He's the black guy. (Samuel L Jackson) You have ever seen any movie ever? He's the Japanese guy.(Hiroyuki Sanada)

dys

I dunno if you noticed that in your version's subtitles where it says Joseon, they're referring to Korea, in fact the subtitles in the US versions say Korea. That was the name of the country now called Korea at this time. So when they talk about conquering or killing in Joseon, they're talking about Japanese wars with Korea.

dys

Both Hulu and Disney+ (US version at least) have longer fades-to-black in some scene breaks than what they're watching. I'd ask what service they're watching it on, but it's entirely possible the cut is just different on Canadian Disney or Hulu etc. vs other countries so there might be no way to see exactly the same edit outside of Canada.

dys

That's a pretty broad statement about Japanese culture... I've only been there once, I have no connection otherwise, but today Japan has a pretty strong democratic government, is pretty good on human rights, education, etc. Seems like their justice system is too biased against the accused but they also don't arrest that many people in the first place and don't lock up almost 1% of their population like my country (the US). Obviously this show portrays how horrific feudal Japan was, but feudal Europe around this time wasn't great either, and slavery in the US was even more barbaric for centuries after this. Japan definitely has problems acknowledging the darker parts of their history, like what they did to Korea and China (Nanjing especially) or WWII prisoners of war, when you compare to how German students are taught about the Holocaust or American students are taught about the native genocides or Japanese internment camps. And Japan still has some more xenophobic attitudes now. But saying "Japanese culture sucks" is way beyond that, when you're talking about a country that has been peaceful to its neighbors for 80 years and is generally considered one of the best places to live.

dys

Japanese native speakers correct me, but I've watched a ton of Japanese film and TV and these actors DO just sound pretty somber and serious to me compared to other works? Obviously anime voice acting is usually way over the top but even compared to modern live-action Japanese dramas this is pretty serious, similar for American ears to something like Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln. I feel like I've watched enough that I kinda get the cadences of Japanese without understanding more than a few words and phrases, enough that I can tell whether a Japanese actor is good and get a sense of the tone they're going for.

Boba Fettuccine

Great reaction! Simone, if you think Tadanobu Asano (Yabushige aka "Boilerman") is adorable I suggest you never watch "Ichi the Killer." You'll never look at him the same way again.

MacGuffinStuff

Excited for this. One of the coolest classes I ever took in college was a class about the Samurai era of Japan, from early history to the Meiji Restoration, although we mostly just read by and about the Samurai, and discussed feudal Japan, then watched Kurosawa movies like "Ran" and "Seven Samurai" (our final was a written review of Ran lol). Sad to say I'm pretty rusty on my history, but I recall the class mostly focused on the three major Shogunates, which I won't name, because SPOILERS (names are different but too close in some cases), but I'm currently digging through my old text books to find the three I bought for that class. I'm pretty sure I know where the show will ultimately go because I remember the broad strokes of the true story, but this show is awesome because it's depicting the many individuals and stories that make the whole. I do love historical fiction, especially when it's more historical than fictional. Btw I hope someday you guys watch "Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End", if you haven't already. Awesome, well written (novels by Ken Follett), well made, ensemble acted miniseries, both based on a semi fictional town in medieval England.

Nicholas Bielik

One thing I remember my instructor telling us in my Japanese history class was one reason why Europeans were so excited to reach Japan. Apparently, the Chinese told the Europeans fanciful stories that in Japan the streets were paved with gold—a lie perhaps designed to send greedy European adventurers flocking to Japan. However, when the Portuguese and others arrived in Japan they discovered that A. the country was relatively poor, and B. that it was also armed to the teeth.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

I adore Scorsese’s series of “faith” films. I wish they could get the same level of attention as his gangster flicks, buy them’s the breaks with such personal subject matter.

Tay Schumaker

Silence really affected me the first time I saw it. It’s such a fantastic and beautiful film. Not sure it’s the best for a reaction channel though

Opti_Frog

Ichi the Killer is sooo worth watching tho.

Truth

Keep falling out of sync with this version you are watching. Its a different version from other reactors

Ashton Lewis

I have this with quite a few videos on patreon, when I watch things on Now TV. It's something to do with films/shows playing at different speeds depending on where you are in the world believe it or not. I counter it by running Simone and George's video at x1.05 speed. You will still go out of sync every couple of minutes slightly, but if you just pause their reaction for a second every now and then you can keep it on track. Annoying I know, but it works.

Ashton Lewis

I read somewhere that the Japanese you hear in this show is similar to Shakespearean English, so it will sound slightly different to other Japanese language shows/films that you've seen. Could be a reason for it sounding more somber I suppose

Sergio Meira

So, a first observation when I (absolutely ignorant of Medieval Japan) first watched this: the scenery and landscape, and the local color (including the music) is so well done! Maybe it's because I'm very far from a specialist, but to my uneducated eyes everything seems so true. Watching this in the big screen (which I did at a friend's house) is such a delight for the eyes -- except for course for scenes like boiling someone alive... Also, you soon realize that the intrigue is not difficult to follow. There may be problems remembering who is who, or what a Shōgun is (big military leader that takes on ruling powers in the absence of an emperor, a bit like a Generalissimo in a banana-republic Central American country in the 50's). But we soon 'get' people like Yabushige ('Boilerman', a less lord, always scheming...) or Lord Toranaga (the guy to whom Blackthorn bows till his head touches the ground at the end of Ep. 1, a wise leader) or Lady Mariko (a multi-talented woman who could probably have been the Shōgun herself if times were different; Catholic, Portuguese-speaking). It's basically a battle royale among the five lords who can't stomach each other for the time necessary for the future emperor to come of age. But Blackthorn's attempts to understand the culture around him... Ah! That's the part that really got me hooked. I hope you'll like it as much! (Also Catholics vs. Protestants in a totally non-European setting!)

Ashton Lewis

I haven't seen your reaction to episode 2 yet, so this might be addressed already (apologies if so), but I just wanted to say that Anjin isn't a bad guy here based on what we know so far. He is an Englishman, sent on a mission to fight the catholics who England are at war with, and to open up trade with Japan. To the catholics he is a bad guy I suppose, in the same way that to him the catholics are bad guys.

Spencer

Yes, the FPS is slightly different.

Dragonhunter

It was perfectly synched for me.

Sergio Meira

"It's a great show so far!" YES, and it only gets better! Personally, I'm still partial to Severance... but Shōgun is also so gosh darn good!

REDR58

I was surprised to see “Secrets of Penthouse” (as in the adult magazine) on Disney+ here in the US.

REDR58

Yeah I know a tiny amount of Spanish (whatever I remember from high school) and can understand a bit of Italian but German is likewise incomprehensible to me.

REDR58

I have no problem following both their commentary and the movie but only if I have subtitles on (with a first watch).

REDR58

Although I never saw it, the 1980 NBC TV miniseries of “Shōgun” starring Richard Chamberlain had historically excellent ratings for such a show and I remember even as a kid back then hearing about how enormously popular it was (though apparently it was far less well received in Japan!). I’ve always wanted to check it out. One of these days I have to pick up a copy. There is a very nice-looking version on Blu-ray as I have just discovered!

Ricardo Alanis

Hulu has brief commercial break moments of black that theirs doesn’t so I have to pause the reaction slightly each commercial but otherwise OK

Ricardo Alanis

Rodriguez is played by the actor that played the mayor in the Dark Knight trilogy.

m

What do you mean hurts you, ATJ is such a specimen fair game I say

Wrencher86

I did quantify what sucks about it. And, honestly, you illustrated some pretty well known examples that support that argument. Japan has been peaceful with its neighbors because their constitution, that America wrote, doesn't allow them to have a standing army. And "best places to live" is largely dependent on your social standing which, as you noted, is at a disadvantage if you are not Japanese. I also didn't say anything about what I thought of feudal Europe (sucked), American slavery (abhorrent) or modern American carceral practices (slavery with a fresh coat of paint). My point with my initial comment was to convey my own feelings of deep revulsion with a culture that imposes incredibly strict social requirements under threat of death. It was a bit flippant and off the cuff, but I'm not inclined to backtrack on it.

Mike FromOz

Great reaction! Like you, when I first started watching the series, I wasn't ready for some of the violence shown. I had pretty much the same reaction as Simone had at the first scene in the village. I've not seen the series fully, so I am looking forward to watching the rest with you all.

Jeff K.

And Richard Alpert in LOST. And the other Spanish/Portuguese pilot who Simone thought looked like a Vancouver actor (he might be; he's from Ontario but there's a good chance he's done a bunch there) is a guy named Louis Ferreira, who's been in well over 100 things, including a role in Breaking Bad (as Declan in season five, the leader of the crew they meet out in the dessert, who Uncle Jack's crew murders later in the season), as well as stuff like Stargate Universe, 24, Westworld (where he ALSO played a character named Alpert, funnily enough), and, like... basically every procedural ever produced. He was also Sarah Polley's husband in Dawn of the Dead (the one who gets killed by the little girl and then turns and tries to kill her in the opening sequence).

SpankTheMonk

Another Tom Hardy clone in the wild! 🤪 and with an older Tom Hardy voice in a young body. 🤔 Also cool that Raiden and Scorpion may fight each other in the future. I understood your feelings for the mother left alone. But as they say children of men. The sex display scene is interesting not only because she used the poet against his will, a kind of reversal. But it feels like live action corn. For the boiling scene and that leaders seemingly inhumane approach, it is nice that other Japanese members of the clan being disgusted. However, I have heard stories that the Japanese culture was still hardcore much later than others. So what he did to the sailor might seem normative to many at the time, like a scientist apathetic to a human subject.

SpankTheMonk

James Hong the goat! B.D. Wong has been the go to Asian guy since before Jurassic park also.

SpankTheMonk

Same here but I thought it had to do with the version they have which is probably 4K and a higher frame rate so slowly getting ahead of me.

SpankTheMonk

The old lord reacting to his son’s innocent question about death was a powerful bit of minute acting. Bravo Also I believe that the monk bald cuts and other similar religious hair cuts for men were at one point a vanity exercise because of male pattern baldness. Which morphed into a spiritual meaning. Or in some cases covering to protect from the harsh sun ☀️ Cool to see the priest actor in the jail. If you continue the Jack Ryan movies you will see him again. Also I forgot that leprosy was world wide at some/many points, fact I kind of learned from Princess Mononoke. Learn so much every day, “flux” seems to describe dysentery/diarrhea.

Tales of the Fantastic Podcast

I hadn't seen Shogun and was really hoping that Severance would win the poll. I now understand why this series won! I'm watching through Shogun for the first time with you two and loving it so far. So much story and so efficiently told! Can't wait to see more!

Michal Novotny

Watched the show when it came out and absolutely loved it. Well, it’s time for a rewatch, I guess. 😁

REDR58

The only sync problems I have is when it jumps to a commercial break. I’m so used now to not seeing commercials during shows I forget to anticipate the break

Luc Zettwoog

It's so funny to me that Simone thinks the boiler guy looks like a nice guy with a kind face, when in every movie/series I've ever seen him in, he's always playing the mischievous villain, so as soon as I saw him, my guard was up and I was immediately suspicious! I don't know, maybe it's the beard that makes him look nicer. xD

REDR58

George, I cannot speak to the accuracy of the language as presented in the series, but as far as the ratings go, apparently it’s quite popular in Japan for those who have seen it. This report is from March 2024 and only covers the first two episodes so there are no spoilers I can see here: https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2024/03/09/tv-streaming/shogun-hiroyuki-sanada-last-samurai/ Edit: another article covering first 2 episodes only: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/01/disney-series-shogun-breaks-mould-with-careful-respect-for-japanese-culture

BangDroid

I didn't know what to expect watching this show, I knew nothing going in. At first I was going to pass on it. But boy, I am glad I began watching! I'm so into it, can't wait for more eh

Bookwormy

I am SO SO SO glad you guys are doing this. I'll comment again after I've watched

Bookwormy

A few notes - I would say that this is a mash up of two events in history but is pretty accurate except with name changes and some liberties, but is otherwise pretty great. Second, FX did a bunch of behind the scenes videos that I suggest you watch after the series, super great. Yabushige is probably my fave character in this series. He's so complex.

MarisoL

The actor that Simone recognized in the second episode is Declan from Breaking Bad "Say my name" scene, I believe so.

dys

Correct, Louis Ferreira, he was also great in Stargate Universe. I assumed since they said they recognized him as a Vancouver actor that meant they recognized him from other stuff they've seen like Breaking Bad. I was thinking his Portuguese accent sounded a little fake while I assumed the Spaniard character Rodrigues was played by an actual Spanish actor, but in fact Louis Ferreira (the Portuguese captain) was born in Portugal (but grew up in Canada) while Néstor Carbonell (the Spaniard) was born in New York.

gfixler

For the edit: go back and speak your thoughts over the edit, and speak a little slowly, and add some reverb to make it sound like dreamy inner monologue. You could start out both having your own [inexplicably non-overlapping] thoughts, and then Simone's thoughts could respond to George's thoughts, and George's thoughts could be like "Whoa, did I just hear your thoughts?" and Simone's thoughts could go "Oh my god, am I hearing you?" Then you can riff from there, and it could go really meta/stream of consciousness, and almost become its own thing, like performance art. And you'd both be stone-faced the entire time, not reacting. Then someone gets their head lopped off in the show, and you both react, and on top of that, your inner monologues both go "oh my god!" and "holy shit!" like 4 voices all being shocked together.

I love how pretty much every single impression you guys have of all the characters during episode 1 is wildly off. The show does a really good job of avoiding cliche
