Come on man you two got to get ready for that day coming when Canada becomes the 51st state. Sooner than you think man !

Itbewhatitbe

god i really really hope you are being sarcastic and is just joking... cause that is some awful shit to throw at people whos done nothing to you. let alone on a platform that heavily emphasized 'no politics'. cause if youre serious, then i hope you get banned asap.

Itbewhatitbe

yeaaaah maybe for you. cause youre not the target. 'fun' is usually for all involved. if its only fun for you at the expense of others, that's just called being a bit of a dick.

Keith Brown

I was laughing with them at their reaction to Omega Glory and just that.

Itbewhatitbe

man then you gotta clarify first. people see the comment waaay before the episode in the 2+ hour video. hell S&G might not even remember which episode is in which video, especially since they were pre-recorded before the holidays. but you know what is likely very very veeery fresh in their minds these days? a neighboring country threatening their own home. like on a daily basis all over the internet.

Jeff I.

Over Capacity, that was an obvious joke on Keith's part. Chill.

"Robert Wesley" was a pen name used by Roddenberry early in his TV writing career, when he was still working for the LAPD. (Wesley was his middle name, and he had a brother named Robert.)

Monica Alarcon

Oh wow. I think I blocked The Omega Glory from my memory. I didn't remember the patriotism stuff... And yes, it's in several lists of the worst Star trek episodes, but don't you worry, there's at least one worse one next season... Also, I can't believe you count The Mirror Universe episode as one of the worst...

Alan Kobb

On behalf of all Americans, I apologize for The Omega Glory. :-) This episode dates back to when Roddenberry was coming up with ideas for the 2nd pilot episode to sell the series. The network got to choose from 4 story ideas for their pilot, and this was one of them. Roddenberry was hoping to come up with an interplanetary space force, but he was afraid that the network brass might want something more "American", so he included this. It was the last of those 4 story ideas to be turned into an episode because it really was an outlier that was only included to sell the series.

Monica Alarcon

I think most would agree that you should watch the Star Trek Movies (I trough VI) Before TNG...

Ginger

Absolutely

Lintrinsic

I love TOS but honestly, there's only so many parallel Earths, duplicate Kirks and and AI getting talked to death a person can handle. 😏 But I've really been enjoying watching along with you both.

Lintrinsic

1 through IV certainly. V and VI could also be slotted into airdate order, especially VI but it's not a huge deal if you don't

Brandon

The Omega Glory is considered a top 10 worst Trek episode. Roddenberry originally wanted to use THAT story as a Pilot episode for the series and I'm SO glad that's no what they went with. The story is so bad that they didn't finish the script and shoot it until the end of season 2 when they really needed something to produce. The Ultimate Computer is one of my favourites, though. I'm pretty sure it's the third episode in the span of 2 seasons where they convince a machine that it's evil and then said machine decides that it needs to die as a result. To me, that will never stop being one of the funniest and best things that can happen in a sci-fi story. "My programming itself is a contradiction. I must die now. Shutting down......*beepboop*"

Gaius Frakking Baltar

George is just upset that the Yanks beat the Asiatics. 🙃 In all seriousness, The Omega Glory is the worst POS of TOS. Marc Cushman's great "These Are the Voyages: Season Two" book describes how showrunner Gene Coon, producer Robert Justman, NBC program manager Stan Robertson, and the legendary Dorothy Fontana all tried to gently convince Rodenberry that his script was crap, but he was having none of it. For reasons I'll never understand, he was irrationally proud of the script. Apparently Rodenberry wore them all down out of sheer persistence, and thus Trek lore is forever cursed with The Omega Glory.

Darin Foat

I decided to skip The Omega Glory, and it sounds like you wish you had done the same. But The Ultimate Computer is a really solid episode. Kirk's "all I ask is a tall ship..." monologue is one of my favorite character moments for him. And William Marshall is great as Daystrom.

D. T. Nelson

Gene Roddenberry was like the creator of that other great science fiction franchise, George Lucas. Great at world building and producing, but horrible at writing and directing. The Omega Glory, even if it was propaganda, was an even worse attempt at writing by Roddenberry than The Phantom Menace was for Lucas. In this case of this episode, ST did not stand for Star Trek, but for Steaming Turd. The Ultimate Computer episode shows how much better it can be in the hands of a competent writer.

I know V and VI were released while TNG was already airing but why go back to the TOS era after starting TNG? Also V and VI establish some background for the Klingon-Federation stuff we see in TNG.

Music

I can’t either…Mirror Mirror is one of my favorites!

Pearl Jam

Watch Order: While some of these series do have some characters that crossover into others due to them being filmed at the same time, for the most part you don’t need to switch back and forth and may complete a series before moving on to the next. Here’s my recommended watch order for Movies & Series including their release year(s): Star Trek: The Original Series (1966 - 1969) Star Trek: The Animated Series (1973 - 1974) Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1984) Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987 - 1994) Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993 - 1999) Star Trek: Generations (1994) (Best if watched after DS9 S1) Star Trek: Voyager (1995 - 2001) Star Trek: First Contact (1996) Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) Star Trek (2009) Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) Star Trek Beyond (2016) Star Trek: Enterprise (2001 - 2005) Star Trek: Discovery (2017 - Present) Star Trek: Picard (2020 - 2023) Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020 - Present) Star Trek: Prodigy (2021 - Present) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022 - Present)

Oh George, Simone almost sang the theme song and...you cut her off.. Someday she will grace us with her operatic splendor.. Going in knowing this was a horrible episode actually made it so much more fun waiting for the Yang to Yankee's reaction and the WTF happened to this episode.? A disease that turns you into bath salts turns into an allegory of 'The American Way' just went so far off the rails... "Omega Glory" was filmed toward the end of 1967 and aired just a month or so after the Tet offensive, which brought the savagery of an already divisive war to all American living rooms. The US Constitution being the holy document at the end could have been inspired by Isaac Asimov's "The Stars, Like Dust,"

Joe Concepts

Nothing wrong with pointing to the Constitution and it's opening as an inspiring document. But this one was just beating everyone over the head with "America! America!" so obviously, it's terrible. I'm sure Kirk and the people of Earth still saw those ideals as something good, but the episode's obviousness is among the worst of the series. And even if you set aside the American stuff, it's just a bad episode, anyway!

Forrest Tanaka

I haven’t watched Omega Glory in years. Now I wish I could still say that.

Monica Alarcon

If I may I would suggest: TNG seasons 1 to 5 DS9 season 1 TNG season 6 DS9 season 2 TNG season 7 Because of the crossovers. After that they could either that they could just finish DS9 or alternate between seasons of DS9 and Voyager so they don't get bored with just the same. But anyways it's still a long way ahead... And after that when they reach Enterprise they could say "It's been a long road getting from there to here"

Pearl Jam

My concern with that would be the two-part season crossover episodes. They’d also lose out on some of the series long story arcs with that much time between seasons. I do like the idea of switching between series so they don’t get board though. They could just go in release date order no matter what series it is, which I would like and would resolve all the issues but would require a bit more work to plan. But yes, still a long way ahead and they’re great at working out what works best for them. I’m just stoked that we’re finally into it.

ExquisiteCapybara

I agree mostly, though i would put Enterprise before the new movies (Star Trek 2009 - onwards). I dont think it matters too mcuh but staying in release order, the new style would have a bigger impact.

Lintrinsic

Starting DS9 before season 6 would be a mistake IMO. It didn't start until midway through the 6th season, and there's plot that happens to set up DS9. The optimum way to watch to avoid spoilers and understand references is by airdate order ignoring the series boundaries, certainly for TNG and DS9. For Voyager and Enterprise the timing of the movies is more critical. Ideally you need to see First Contact before starting Enterprise and have finished watching Voyager before Nemesis.

Lintrinsic

It depends on what you want from it If you want an experience as close as possible to those who watched it when it first aired, airdate order is best. If that doesn't matter you can watch the TOS movies before TNG. Both are equally valid.

Jeff I.

As someone who isn't into Star Trek, I have to selfishly pray these movies don't take up a ton of reaction slots (if they watch them). Haha

StonyD

I like this episode, only because it showcases an exact moment in American culture where Cold War propaganda was blatant and forced. Good or bad, this episode is a snapshot of that moment and should always be preserved in as much as it represents our history.

StonyD

George, I don't know who talked to you about Star Trek, but TOS is as much canon as every other Star Trek. Omega Glory is canon, unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you see it. Same with the Nazi episode. It all counts. lol

Thanks for the extra info. One of my issues with the Enterprise show intro theme is it feels and visualizes a very American centric tone and imagery. Which, even though an American television show creation always felt broader. So to me it really reduced what I thought was the shows universal appeal.

Monica Alarcon

They said they were going to watch it after season 3! I'm so happy about it

Alan Kobb

That's fair, but keep in mind that this episode is an outlyer in this way.

John

I really enjoyed the Ultimate Computer, and it was great to see William Marshall; I think this was the first Star Trek episode to try and address "AI" or "Thinking Computers," which were probably away thoughts. I will suggest the Imitation game for your movie list

Monica Alarcon

You are right, I forgot about that...

Bombaatu

Will you guys also be doing the Star Trek movies?

Bruce Woodcock

Whomever told you that most of early Star Trek was thrown out as not canon was wrong. It's all canon, although sometimes events as portrayed on screen may have actually happened a little differently. As for the fantastic impossibility of this and other "parallel Earths" that frequently appear, you need to know that there are numerous alien races that engaged in the intervention of the development of species on other planets. You also have god-like beings like Trelane who are capable of duplicating a species at whim. And various time travel shenanigans that could have similar effects. Not all of these are explicitly EXPLAINED on screen, but you should become comfortable enough with the lore to INFER some stuff. Just say to yourself, "Hmm, this seems ridiculous, but in Star Trek 'A Wizard did it' is an acceptable explanation."

The Real Andrew Kim

There is a lot of known history behind the scenes about Gene Roddenberry's struggle with studio executives and meddling, so to answer your question every time you ask, "What happened to this episode?" the answer is usually because some executive wanted to see more sexy ladies or more action or something like that at the expense of good writing or story telling.... also budget and time are other reasons... Also in terms of Omega Glory, i always thought it was possible the writers were pressured to be more patriotic in response the questions raised from other episodes like Private Little War.

3dbadboy1

So, absolute power corrupts absolutely. I guess that includes Daystrom's M-Class computers.

SpankTheMonk

I forgot the Starfleet officer just disintegrated a redshirt. 🪦💀. And how homicidal he is/has become. I also now remember that Omega episode isn’t completely terrible just that last 15 minutes reveal that just blows up the whole thing, at least for me. 🤷. Also I caught the yellow side comment too this time- weird. On the updated visual effects version it shows an earth like planet, as Spock would say “fascinating”. I wonder if any official book could in some way explain it 🤷 Simone’s comment about Gene throwing a wrench in the script is interesting. If what the comments below mention that this was one of many potential pilot scripts written, and to satisfy the propaganda machine Gene purposefully turn a bad/crazy ending so not to get chosen? Also great thought on Gene being in Mcarthy’s eye and having it overdue patriotism even into the 60s. Like mention below, they don’t throw out most of the cannon, they selectively choose. Meaning that they had the opportunity to find what works best for the Star Trek universe. I think William Shatner is holding back laughter at the end reading the US Constitution.

Sergio Meira

Hey, the Constitution FTW! The damn Congs will learn to admire it too. And everything will be fine... of course, only until the Yangs elect Trump. Yes, you're now laughing at a planet who developed all kinds of American stuff way before Earth did... just wait till we start our own interplanetary travels and find out it's all truth. The Yangs and the Congs will get the last laugh, bwahaha! 😊

Simon Pegged Me

The Yangs and Comms will merge and form the Verse. They will fight a system-wide civil war, and the side with the Brown coats will lose. After reconstruction, they will explore the galaxy and work in busted-ass hoopty space ships, the most entertaining ones in a Firefly-class freighter. And all will be good, but only for a season.

Simon Pegged Me

Yeah, it's one of my favorites, and it's influenced pop culture beyond just Trek. Most of that is comedy, but I'm good with that.

REDR58

I would much prefer they watch all the movies than any of Voyager or Enterprise.

Jomero

I don't have the time to follow TOS, and the desire is also a little less for me there. But when you get to Simone's (and mine) favorite: The Next Generation? Oh baby, I will MAKE time! I am not looking forward to cringing my way through the first season though. But I will happily endure it!

BzzBzzBzzBzzBzz

What I find particularly interesting about 223 is how it ties nationalist propaganda to white victimhood. Also, that it does so with the theme of contagion typical of white cultural fantasies. The idea that the non-white, non-Western Other will infect 'us' (white culture) with 'their' incivility corrupting the purity of whiteness is blatantly and shamelessly promoted in this episode encapsulated in the comfortable rhetoric of US superiority for the mass consumption of American audiences.

dc

They're watching the Animated Series? I'm torn between being intrigued (since I've never watched it) and impatient for them to get to the TOS movies and TNG, which (IMHO) are much more essential Trek. I'm also wondering how TOS Season 3 is going to be. I haven't ever watched it fully through, but I have heard that the quality is lacking—with some occasional gems in there. What's your opinion on S3?

Monica Alarcon

I agree. Season 3 is mostly bad with a few good episodes in it. And in my opinion, story wise the Animated Series is better than season 3 because Gene Roddenberry and D.C. Fontana and some of the writers for the first two seasons return.

dc

I almost want them to just do the essential S3 episodes, and move onto the movies. I worry that they might get fatigued going from S3 to TNG S1—both are rough. But I know Simone loves the peak TNG, so I guess they'll push through. Whatever they wind up watching, I'll watch along.

Monica Alarcon

I think that's the point. I've already seen every episode of every series so now I'm just along for their ride. The only episode I might consider advising about skipping is the last episode of TNG season 2 "Shades of Grey"...

gfixler

I always thought the ultimate computer was the friends we made along the way.

punterjoe

You're planning on watching ALL the Star Trek series all the way through to Enterprise? Godspeed. But be warned, it'll be a long road... getting from here to there 😏

G Lam

I'm sure you figured it out by now, but it is: TOS, TAS, TNG. DS9, VOY, ENT How you fit in the movies and the TNG/DS9, DS9/YOV overlaps, I'll leave to you. Suffice to say, you need ST:1-6 movies before you hit TNG. You knew this was a big fish you decided to reel in, right??? I'm here for it all!

SuicuneSol

I know exactly why you're laughing and I laugh at it too as an American. And I nearly forgot you're from Canada too... I don't think it's mandated propaganda; it's just that's how patriotic Gene Roddenberry was. But it's laugh worthy that he just decided to dispense with the allegory and threw in the American Flag, the US Constitution, and the Cold War without shame. And it's not like freedom and liberty aren't important, but it really highlights in the worst way the Earth-centric vision of ToS that other planets will develop so identically that they form their own Americas, Chinas, and Russias, down to the exact same flags, names, and documentation. And that every other Earth-like planet must be a dollar store knock-off of the real thing. No planet we ever visit could ever be better than Earth because it would imply that Earth's future is not utopian, which was contrary to his vision. Unfortunately, that very vision breaks the suspension of disbelief spectacularly.

Rupert Purcat

I love episode 23 - It is sooo seppo (yank) It always felt like Star Treks 'Planet of the Apes' episode.

Michael

One episode is written by Gene Roddenberry the other is written by DC Fontana she has written some of the best episodes, The Omega Glory is from an unused pilot episode that didn’t sell that’s why it’s so bad also it was written by Gene Roddenberry

SpankTheMonk

D.C. Fontana for the win! RiP 🌹

Patrick - Excelsior

This script was NOT government mandated, in fact it was a script that Gene Rodenberry wrote himself because he was fiercely believed in it. This was one of three scripts submitted to NBC (along with 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' and 'Mudd's Women' when they were seeking to do a second pilot for the series. It got pushed back repeatedly until the end of season 2 because the powers that be (NBC) thought it was a weak story. The opposite of mandated. The story is written to appeal to the public where it will be aired. It's reflected the morals of its audience of the times in was written in. The part which drew criticism from the 'patriots' of the day is that they portrayed the decedents of the Asians as being more civilized than the decedents of the US. But the, Rodenberry liked to push boundaries as he could in his limited capacity for that era in the US. First, convergent evolution is a widely believed theory (it has been seen on our own planet with the evolution of different species separated but extremely similar). In a universe as big as this is (Scientists estimate that there are around 20 sextillion planets (2 followed by 23 zeros) in the observable universe. And the observable universe is only a miniscule piece of the actual universe ), even the once in a hundred billion chance that a world with a people and philosophy identical to ours is not only possible, it is statistically a guaranteed to happen trillions of times. As for this planet being a duplicate of Earth's culture, its the other way around. If the Kohm guard's father was over a thousand years old and he got his extended lifespan from 10's of thousands of years evolution after the nuclear/biological war. then that means their culture of the Yanks and Communist predated ours by ten's of thousands of years. Second, they explained the disease and extended lifespan as a result of biological warfare and evolution. A letter reprinted in Inside Star Trek: The Real Story reveals that Gene Roddenberry personally submitted his teleplay for consideration for an Emmy Award. And yes, as a child in the 1960's this was one of my favorite episodes.

Marcus Hicks

So, in Amok Time George recognised the fight theme music from Futurama.....but I wonder if he now realises why this music being the National Anthem for Zoidberg's people was so hilarious for us long-time Star Trek fans.
