You know it's gonna be a good one when George doesn't even bother with a photoshopped thumbnail and just goes with Simone crying.

Galactic Cannibl

Good reaction! I really hope the movie Big Fish gets added back into the polls!

“ I’m going to beat you with a crowbar until you go away. “

SuPaTiLt

Just came by to say I got that reference! Portlandia is such a great show

myinniemademedoit

The sports movie that isn’t actually about sports!

jmundt33a

“You’re a PACIFIST!!” “Sh@t.” *clang*

ShōNuff3K

Boston Red Sox Chicago White Sox How Simone knew that, I'll never know. 2025...Simone writes a novelette. 2026...Simone writes a novel. 2027...Simone writes the screenplay for her novel...also gets married. I see the future?

jmundt33a

Annie would be SO disappointed in the 2020s.

Kevin Ehle

One of my favorite movies. It does hit harder when you are a baseball fan and have a dad who passed on early. Beautiful film.❤️

Jeff K.

It might be in the trivia but in for the obligatory, "Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were extras in the scene in Fenway Park" comment. (Speaking of Affleck and Fenway: gonna go ahead and suggest The Town.) Also: for as mystical and magical as this movie is, by far the most unrealistic thing in its entire running time is when Ray and Terrence Mann can just march up to a concession stand in Fenway that's got absolutely zero line. I've been to Fenway several times and can confirm, it's a complete impossibility.

Gary Poussard

I believe that Terrance Man was using an old style bug sprayer.

jmundt33a

White Sox. Jackson was a member of the White Sox.

Zack Gallardo

Oh man that is a dream reaction for sure.

myinniemademedoit

I felt old when they didn’t know what it was lol

Jeff K.

One more recommendation based on you guys doing this movie: Eight Men Out. It’s the story of why Joe and the other White Sox got thrown out of the league (the 1919 Black Sox scandal).

Rick West

That spray that james earl Jones was a bug sprayer from back in the day.great reaction! Thanks guys

jmundt33a

Better than It’s not Heaven. It’s breakfast. Which was a tagline for cereal commercials for a few years and periodically resurfaces.

Matthew Johnson

"It's like a crazy blend of magic and realism" - in literature we call that "Magical Realism" baby

Jeff K.

Regarding the field: not only is it still standing, but an actual small stadium and larger field was built alongside it and Major League Baseball plays a game there every year now.

JBK405

George, watching a baseball game on TV is one of the single most boring experiences in the world. You're not missing anything. Seeing a game in real life, on the other hand, is great. It's still not an exciting sport, but there's something about being part of the crowd and feeling the energy. I go to a game about once a year just to experience it.

Matthew Wabals

“THATS WHY I haven’t gotten any writing done .” !!

Jeff K.

Agreed. I basically never spend time in my actual seat whenever I go to a game. I've always enjoyed wandering around the park, and most of them have multiple bars where you can see the game, etc.

myinniemademedoit

The addition of the pitch clock has drastically sped the game up but TV viewing it still sloooow. Going to a game is enjoyable… if you have a good home team that it… there’s a lot of bad baseball teams in the MLB

Derek Ray

Annie and Karin are played by Amy Madigan and Gaby Hoffman, who starred in Uncle Buck (1989) which you guys need to check out btw

Mike Medaugh

Baseball on TV is pretty bad. I much prefer it on the radio as background noise or while driving. Can't beat going to the game though.

Mike Medaugh

I hate that they commercialized it. I feel it renders JEJ speech at the end meaningless.

Charles Gaba

Every father who watches this will be bawling by the end no matter what how much of a tough guy they think of themselves as.

Mike Medaugh

8:35 Oh you sweat thing, just wait..

Jeff K.

I've seen this movie dozens of times, and still, the moment the music starts to swell, Ray realizes he's found his own slice of heaven, and he caps it off by getting out a choked up, "Hey, dad?" it's fucking curtains for me every single time. The score in this movie is so, so, so underrated, I think. (I know people appreciate it, but whenever you talk about "great film scores" this one never pops up, and then when you mention it, it's like, "Oh, yeah, that theme is amazing!")

Jeff K.

Honestly, if George and/or Simone WERE to ever attend a baseball game in the US, I'd recommend going with a minor league game. It's a lot more casual (not to mention cheaper), and it has more of a fun, carnival-type atmosphere (as opposed to the Disney World vibe of the giant professional ballparks).

Com1xguy

That Thumbnail says it all.

Dustin Merchant

The story of shoeless Joe is so Tragic. He was was illiterate. Working from the age of seven to help support his family he never went to school. He couldn't even sign his own name(his wife generally signed for him. A handful of his actual signatures exist and are extremely valuable). Still he went on to become of of the greatest baseball players ever. Only to be brought down by the black Sox scandal. There's no evidence he did anything to throw the series. But the MLB still banned him for life with the rest of the team. I'll second Eight Men Out as a good movie on the subject.

myinniemademedoit

Some MLB parks are pretty cheap. Lots of week day afternoon games in the summer. I can get tickets for less than $30 some games where I live. Concessions and parking aside.

Phillyman!!

I third The Town 👍👍💯💯

Phillyman!!

I would love to know how tf this idea of this movie was made bc wow so weird but so AMAZING 💯👍

Simone/George: Will you guys *.please* start posting the url for the video in the description? YouTube is extremely glitchy for me on Patreon. It keeps saying that I need to sign in to confirm that I’m human, but I’ve literally done so dozens of times, and it keeps asking. It’s quite clearly some sort of glitch, and not something that I’m doing wrong on my end. However, posting a text link of the url would immediately solve this issue, as I can then simply open the link in the app. I know I’m not the only one with this issue. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. Ha. Seriously, I appreciate everything you guys do, and will be even more grateful if you start doing this in the future. (NOTE: This only happens on my mobile devices, which since I spilled soda on my computer, is all I have at the moment).

Will Sofer

It’s based on a book called “Shoeless Joe” by Kinsella. Yes, apparently a slightly factionalized version of the guy that Kevin Costner plays in the movie. As I’ve never read it, I don’t know how it differs, but it’s supposedly “partially” based on a true story. Not sure what that means exactly when there’s such heavy supernatural elements involved.

HeyHeyJK

Hey, Simone is a lady. She does not sweat. :-)

HeyHeyJK

Yeah, you're absolutely right. At least there's beer to help the time (although it's all way too expensive). I used to direct live minor league baseball games and just switching between cameras was so boring until someone hit the ball and then you had to figure out where it was going. Then there was a few moments of 'excitement' and then ... boring. Sure doesn't compare to the non-stop action in hockey ... or curling.

Phillyman!!

Duh they did put that in the credits my bad. But yeah the supernatural elements were crazy to think of. Yeah I feel dumb. Thank you to reminding me 😂😂👍👍

Jeff K.

One of the big ways it differs in the book is the reclusive writer character. In the book, it isn’t Terrence Mann, it’s just straight up JD Salinger (so you can imagine why they changed that for the movie).

Muir Lyman

why are bawling and being a tough guy mutually exclusive?

John

Thank you for this watch; it was great. I would echo other's suggestions for future baseball movies The Natural Bingo Long's Traveling Allstar and Motor Kings 42 Major League Bull Durham Pride of the Yankees

Rob Church

Lol George! "It's like magic and realism." Like magical realism? Love you two.

Cinebinge

Hi will, sorry to hear about the issue! We can do that for future posts but just an FYI, the post itself is an url, so when you try to play the video and it's asking you to sign in and all that, on that same window in the corner where it says "YouTube" clicking that will just take you to the YouTube app itself. That IS the url link.

Jeff K.

@Muir Lyman because a lot of "alpha men" (and not saying Charles is by any stretch, to be clear, just that I get what he's saying) think that it's weakness to show emotion and that Real Men Don't Cry. (Whereas being able to express yourself emotionally is easily one of the healthiest things imaginable.)

Jeff K.

I fourth The Town! (Am I allowed to do that? Shhhh. Let's just go with it. One of the final performances - and maybe even the final? I know he was very sick when he made it - from the great Pete Postlethwaite in that movie, and one of the performances that really helped put Jeremy Renner on the map.)

Jeff K.

Haven't seen all of those (Bingo Long and 42; I've seen Pride of the Yankees but it was ages ago), but definitely agree on the ones I am super familiar with, The Natural, Major League, and Bull Durham. I'd throw the original Bad News Bears in there, as well. (But definitely not the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad remake with Billy Bob Thornton.)

Alan Kobb

I know they would love Bull Durham!

Mike Medaugh

Oh good heavens....that's embarrassing oppsie

Mike Medaugh

The Battered Bastards of Baseball is an excellent documentary that is/was on Netflix

Jeff K.

@Mike is that the one about the team that Kurt Russell's dad owned?

Jeff K.

That's accurate. Women don't sweat, they glow. It's just science.

Will Sofer

Thank you, very much! As far as your suggestion, that’s sort of the issue. In most of the instances of when it’s an embedded image, you have to click play to be able to click the YouTube icon. So I play a stupid game where I try to hit it in the less than half a second before it goes all goes grey and says “sign into YouTube”. On rare occasion, it’s a static image where I can click the icon without hitting play. Not even gonna pretend to understand their embedded architecture. I just know it’s not consistent. Regardless, you posting the url fixes it entirely, so it’s not remotely an issue anymore. Again, thanks for doing that. Happy New Year, by the way. :)

Will Sofer

@Phillyman, you’re not dumb at all. I never noticed it in the credits. The only reason why I know is because someone told me many years ago. A bit embarrassed actually that I never read the book, or looked into how accurate they claimed it was. I’m not sure you could claim it’s even partially accurate without the “if you build it, he will come” aspect. Otherwise it’s just a crazy guy in a baseball diamond pitching to the plate, or a guy who built a field in honor of his father.

ShōNuff3K

They actually play major league baseball games there. I think once a season.

Carl Noraas

You guys give some of the best reactions to drama/sad movies. I can't remember if you've put Rain Man and Manchester by the Sea on a poll before, but I'd love to see your reactions to them! Two of my fav's.

Mark McConnell

I’ve been to the Field of Dreams. It’s in Dyersville, Iowa about 30mins west of Dubuque, Iowa. It’s beautiful. Major League Baseball has played one actual regulation game there a year for the last 3-4 years. It’s always a big event and is broadcast live on national TV.

Dwight Scarn

I was so gonna say original Bad News Bears! Lol Billy Bob played a good buttermaker. But movie was bad

Mikeo8575

Nice Portlandia reference. Remember, the dream of the 90s is alive in Portland. Also, the movie Eight Men Out with John Cusack and Charlie Sheen is about the 8 players, including Shoeless Joe, who were banned from baseball for throwing the 1919 World Series.

Brandon Meng

Manchester has been on a poll once and did awful, but I keep pushing it. Must see for them.

Brandon Meng

An example of when a great reaction can elevate a movie-watching experience for me, so thank you for that. The only thing is that you've seen this and the Untouchables, but you haven't seen Dances with Wolves, which is undoubtedly the best of this era from Kevin Costner!

Tim Miller

Agreed. Doesn't matter how many times i've seen it, I will always get choked up watching the end of this movie.

Sean Barbante

They did in '22 and '23, but not this last season.

Joe Concepts

It’s funny that some of us are of the age that we only recognize old tools like that because we used to watch really old cartoons as kids. So I never saw one but I probably saw Bugs Bunny using one.

Adam K

I’ve easily seen this movie 25+ times. There is no movie scene that makes me tear up more than when Kevin Costner asks his dad to have a catch. It’s just hits on one of those core memories.

Jeff K.

Now GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE!

Herby Ragan

Shoeless Joe played for the White Sox.

REDR58

I love watching baseball on TV (as well as going to the Philadelphia Phillies/Reading Phillies games which are both relatively local to me). I watch every Phillies game on TV and I’ll listen to the radio when TV is not an option. Hockey is just to fast to follow on TV and is MUCH better as a live experience.

REDR58

Who knew figurative and literal book-burning would be making a comeback? Sigh.

jmundt33a

The Natural, 42, and Pride of the Yankees are all excellent. Anyone else seen Hardball from 2001 with Keanu Reeves?

jmundt33a

I really should start to imagine Karen taking up the fight. Gabby Hoffman (her portrayer) definitely would.

Jay Johnson

this movie kind of allows me to experience something similar to when S&G recognize places from movie scenes that were filmed in Vancouver. I've been to the farm that the movie build the baseball field at (which they've kept as a tourist destination, even this many decades later), as well as the high school where the PTA meeting was held. My own high school is listed on the wall in the background (as it was in the same sports conference as that high school)

Jay Johnson

Not precisely there. they left the movie field intact, but it is much too small for a MLB game. So they built a bigger field nearby to host an MLB game a few years ago. The first one was essentially just a temporary field that they took down after, but the event went well so they repeated it the next year. Then they decided to build a more permanent modern field (but still leaving the movie site more or less as it was) and I think another MLB game will be played there this next summer/fall. I remember watching that first MLB game on TV, and there happened to be such a picturesque sunset in the background, it was almost magical. (if I recall, that was one of the times when there were major wildfires in Canada, and the smoke from them got brought down this way by the jet stream which really added texture to our sunsets that summer). But I digress

Holy Squire

gas leak: George managed to be funny. I never thought it would actually happen.

Jay Johnson

you mean the speech that specifically says that people will come and pay money?
