Legend of the Drunken Master - Patreon Version

Comments

I always, always think Legend is "Kung Pow! Enter the Fist" at first for some weird reason - localization shenanigans when I was young or something along those lines. Which, to be perfectly clear, is an absolute comedy must-watch in my book.

30 years later I'm still convinced this is the best martial arts movie ever made.

Yaassss, can’t wait to get home from work

Here's a long bit of trivia. Original source, a commentary track on a laserdisk I had of this. Now with Wiki links!: "In the fight scene on the train [...] Mr. Chan is fighting Lau Kar-leung (original director). ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drunken_Master_II "Lau began learning kung fu when he was nine years old, under strict tutelage from his father". ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lau_Kar-leung "Lau was the third child of Lau Cham (Lau Jaam, 劉湛), a martial arts master who studied Hung Gar under Lam Sai-wing, a student of Wong Fei-hung." ref: ibid So Jackie Chan is doing the scene with a guy who traces his training to Wong Fei_hung, Coolio!

"Haha, he got brain damage" is not really the ending this movie deserved. 😭

It would be dope to watch the original Drunken Master. I know this is a technically more impressive film, but I have a sentimental attachment to the original.

Drunken Trivia 2: The older gentleman Jackie Chan is fighting at the beginning under the train is Shaw Brothers legend Lau Kar-Leung. He's directed about 30 films, starred in most of them, is an accomplished choregrapher, and actually directed a good portion of Drunken Master 2 before leaving over creative differences. Wong Fei-Hung, the character Jackie Chan plays, was a real person who lived from 1847 to 1925 in the Canton province. After his death, his students and followers pretty much elevated him to legend status through theater plays and films. The best film about Wong Fei-Hung IMO is "Once Upon A Time In China" (1990) by Tsui Hark, with Jet Li. The actor who plays Jackie's father is Ti Lung (another Shaw Brothers legend). He's 8 years older than Jackie. As for Anita Mui (stepma), she was 9 years younger than Jackie. The kickboxer with glasses who Jackie fights at the end is Ken Lo (Lo Wai-Kwong). He was a bouncer in real-life, who Jackie hired in 1986 to become his bodyguard. He wasn't even supposed to do the final fight but he stepped in when the original stunt actor got injured. To this day, Drunken Master 2 is his best and biggest film role. And yes, Jackie Chan does sing the theme song.

One of the few times when an American edit made the right decision by snipping something out.

Recommendations for Kung Fu Parody: Kung Pow Enter The Fist

SpankTheMonk

Aw-yeah! Loved this movie for years since a friend from Kung-fu and Wushu class showed it to me! 🫶🙌🎉💯. Thanks for the run time listening too.

I love this movie as well as the first, but this movie is a much better stand alone. Such great fight choreography, and just well done in every aspect.

Tomas

Must recommend Kung Pow again, even though it did really poorly in polls last time.

Awesome movie😀 I think you’ve talked about il in the past but a Buster Keaton movie would be great

Tom Hess

+1. One of my favourite films of all time is The General (1926). The version on the UK blu-ray scored by Joe Hisaishi is awesome.

Mitchell Bowker

I would LOVE for you to show Simone Jackie Chan's POLICE STORY films, especially the first 3 films, and First Strike if you can get the original uncut version. Fantastic films! And don't wait till Chinese New Year next year, please :D

megamoo chilli

One of my absolute most favourite films. Saw the chinese language with subtitles in the cinema but I only have the english language dub now and watching it next to your version with the subtitles is a trip. So many things they say are different. After the photo at the end it cuts straight to the outtakes and plays some random filler music, so no silly ending .

Thanks for this. I’d seen it years ago but never rewatched it. You need to react to some Andy Lau films, I’m thinking House of the Flying Daggers or Infernal Affairs. Also, RRR might use a lot of CGI and wire work but tonally it’s got a lot in common this era of Hong Kong action. Definitely worth a react.

"The General" would be amazing! It's astonishing how well Buster Keaton movies have held up in terms of storytelling and pacing! "Sherlock Jr" is also great!

Luc Zettwoog

I would really like to see some Tsui Hark or John Woo movie for next year !!!!! Once upon a Time in China, the Blade, the Killer, Hard Boiled, Time and Tide are so great !

s0rd3z

Great movie. I have owned three different copies over the year. Though you missed an opportunity to do Snake in Eagles Shadow for the year of the snake. This is the better film as that pretty early on in his career. 70's & 80's Shaw Brothers has some great flicks if you are into that type of thing. Green Dragon Inn, 7 Grand Masters and the 36th Chamber films of course. I could go on :)

s0rd3z

Thats the version I have now as well. I really wanted the original language version but I couldn't get a hold of a copy

SpankTheMonk

Andy Lau is in the “overall “handsome business” 😁. 20 points to anyone that gets that reference. Animals and actors may have been harmed in the making of the film. RIP GOAT Anita Mui. And the action in camera and clear with the actors, stunts is amazing and so fluid. I believe a Tekken character was inspired from the Drunken Master films.

jbh92

Great to watch this again, and this is probably the one to see of the 2. More HK cinema sounds good to me.

Tech Citizen

This one is fun.. RIP Anita Mui, the Madonna of Asia. There are several other HK mega-stars in here, including Andy Lau. He starred in Drunken Master III. I highly recommend the 2011 Shaolin movie starting Andy Lau with Jackie Chan supporting. It's not a comedy but can reach deep in the soul along with great actions and music.

M L

Are you guys planning to do the original Drunken Master? IMO, it’s a better movie in some ways.

zak

Man I remember seeing this for the first time thinking "Wow how did they do that stunt in the hot coals, it looks so real!", then seeing the credits "Oh...he just jumped in to hot coals"

I had a very different set of subtitles, which also matched the English dub. Here's an example, from the scene just after Fei-Hong and his friend are released from that prison, and learn that the father has sold the school for their freedom... Your subtitles: Fei-Hong: I regret not having taken Father's advice. father: Now you really are repenting. Life changes like a moving river. It's not too late for you to repent. Take it as a lesson. It's okay now. Let's go home. My subtitles/audio: Fei-Hong: I wish that they had killed me. father: Now, Fei-Hong, that is enough. Life's changes are like a moving river. What's here today is gone tomorrow, and tomorrow brings a whole new journey. Let's move forward and live.

Tom Hess

The english dub changed a lot of things. From my limited understanding of cantonese, the subtitles that Simone and George used were very accurate.
