Quick! Let's all make incredibly brilliant comments that even the bigwigs at Sony would deem too world-changing to risk losing into the ether!

Fly Ωhms

Hey I like this movie!! Who else here would love to see a video of Simone covering 'I'd Go the Whole Wide World' on her guitar??

jmundt33a

So Sony’s bitchiness is why there aren’t more reactions to this wonderful movie?

Andrew

Annnddd it got taken down while I was watching it.

jmundt33a

Sadly, postgrad literature courses can be like his little did he know discussion.

Da Big Appa

I want to add the movie suggestion a Secret life of Walter Mitty. The trailer kind of sucked and the movie did not do that well in the theaters but years later I watched the movie and loved the theme of it.

Jeff K.

Tell those assholes at Sony that I always watch Cinebinge on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings while I'm on the elliptical. They're screwing with my routine and I do not appreciate it.

Jeff K.

I don't think I've seen it since I saw it in the theater, so I was looking forward to revisiting it with George and Simone (I know I'll still most likely be able to, but severely cut down). Such a bummer.

jmundt33a

Last Chance Harvey should be on your list.

In terms of great comedians in dramatic or non-comedic films, definitely give some of Adam Sandler’s films a shot. Like Punch-Drunk Love, the Meyerowitz Stories (also with Dustin Hoffman), and Uncut Gems. He’s so phenomenal when he veers off into dramatic work or working with unique directors.

Daniel Smith

I love this film. Great idea executed really well . For some reason I mentally pair it with Dan in real life starring Steve Carroll. It might be the comic doing a serious role vibe or the gentle nature of both films. Hint, you need to watch Dan in real life too.

Tcrimson05T

Real Cinema. They've almost hit the trifecta. They've seen Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind they've watched this which is one of my favorite films ever. Now all I need them to do is watch "Secret Life of Walter Mitty".

Andrew

It’s back up!

Michael Haug

We need a petition for Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Paul T Hewes

Maggie Gyllenhaal is not traditionally beautiful, but she has something about her. ESPECIALLY in this movie. She is stunning here.

Paul T Hewes

This is an amazing movie. I have watched it so many times...

HereBeMeghan

So glad you enjoyed it! Love this film, it's so underrated. When I saw it in theaters and heard one Spoon song after another as part of the soundtrack/score, I thought this was made specifically for me and my interests.

Florian

In case of the are you a people person or a time on your own person. I'm on the side of be on your own, thats where my batteries recharge, and after I charged enough I'm happy to share my energy with other people. But I really like small groups of friends, talking to one or two, thats wholsome for me. Having a big party is most of the time verry exhausting for me, to the point of seeing no one for a day or two.

Florian

I support this petition :D

Rhinehold

This is terrible news, I watched the full watch along and glad I did. I am so happy that you both loved the movie, it is one of my favorite movies ever, touching on so many elements of the human condition AND a great insight into literary concepts as well. I would hazard to say it is a perfect movie and I literally cry during the last bit of narration, even if I am just watching that bit. The only other movie that does that to me is City Lights by Charlie Chaplin. I hope that Sony takes the stick out of where it currently is because this movie should be seen by everyone and I'm hoping that you both reacting to it will help more people give it a go, it can only HELP them, they have had it off of streaming platforms for so long it makes no sense! I watched along with my own personal copy...

Rhinehold

I add my vote for Walter Mitty as well!

Thomas Thompson

Try the movie Holes. Its its own unique thing and how can either of you resist the jokes spawning in your head from that title.

mojo shivers

For sure this is my favorite Will Ferrell performance. Not only do they give him an endearing relationship/meet cute with a very attractive Maggie Gyllenhaal, which he normally doesn’t get, but he gets a real existential crisis that isn’t just played for laughs. One of top 3 favorite films is Joe Versus the Volcano and that pretty much is an existential/philosophy film dressed up in a romantic comedy’s clothes as well. Even years later I remember this film raising some tough questions about purpose, destiny, and meaning in the face of a supposed higher power or what just appears to be one, when in reality is no more intelligent than ourselves but merely has the gift of creation/manifestation. It really highlights the concept of deism which is my de facto theological belief.

Tyler Foster

One thing that may be contributing to the complication surrounding this movie is that it was released on Blu-ray by Sony and has the Sony logo at the beginning, but for some reason digital copies are all accredited to Lionsgate. Not sure how that would be making it harder, but it's rare that physical/digital rights are split like this.

Phillyman!!

Definitely watch Rain Man. A excellent Dustin Huffman movie 💯💯

Rob Church

Great soundtrack featuring a bunch of Spoon songs.

Jeff K.

With how much George was thirsting over Maggie in this movie... no one tell him about Secretary. He may never recover.

Jeff K.

I would throw Tootsie into the conversation for more Dustin Hoffman movies.

Da Big Appa

I suggested Mitty too!!! If they liked this movie they should also love Mitty.

Trevor Rotan

I remember going to see this in the theater and no one else I knew seemed even to know it was out. I was always so surprised this flew so deep under the radar, because I adore this movie. It definitely follows the Truman Show in its theme-a man with his life all planned out by an outside force and finds out. I prefer this to Truman Show, because Harold is his own world without an audience. I hated Truman show because of the ridiculousness of the premise.

Helly R

I also had this thought. Really great movie, though.

Dan

I'm not generally that into Will Ferrell movies but I really like this one. Though I'm not sure I'd really call it "serious". Re George saying how the narration (ie, book) on its own was boring - yes, it's literary fiction :) I'll mention 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World' as a similar (in some ways) movie to this. Not that well known but a kinda black-comedy drama with a big comedy lead (Steve Carell) in a more-serious-than-normal role. (And if you really like Maggie Gyllenhaal then there's Secretary (2002) - but I'm not sure how much of that you can show on Youtube.)

Jawnnnn

I second Seeking a Friend for the End of the World!

Hyperdryve

Yes!!! I’ve been waiting for this one! 🥳

Phil's House Shows

Definitely agree with Walter Mitty. One of my all time favorite movies

ShōNuff3K

What fictional character in all of cinema would you want to date or marry. I'll go first. Andie MacDowell's character in Groundhog Day.

Jeromy M

Rachel, Blade Runner. Also her character in Dune.

Mark McConnell

I have a movie list called: Great Movies Most People Don’t Know About. This is definitely on the list. Btw, another great rarely seen is Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai starring an amazing Forest Whittaker. Give it a go!!

Lycowolf

Since you guys enjoyed this, you guys should give 'Everything Must Go' with Will Ferell, a try also.

Opti_Frog

"Flours" gets me every time.

Opti_Frog

Secretary and Quills are two of my favourite movies from the early 00s.

Mastervodo

Me too! It's such a great pun! It's too bad you could never actually use it in real life for a baker. Because they've probably seen/heard of it from this movie, and instead of being a clever, adorable, romantic gesture, it's stolen, contrived and fake. Which is sad, because it's such a great, romantic gift!

Mastervodo

Sam. Android Night Punch.

Opti_Frog

Haha, first you have to ask your baker love interest if he/she has seen the movie, and after using the "flours" technique make sure he/she never gets to see it. 😄

jmundt33a

Third for Seeking.

Christina Doxstader

I remember I had the biggest smile on my face when I realized that it was flours instead of flowers. I mean what a great pun for that situation

Christina Doxstader

This movie is so underrated that it makes me sad to think about it. Will Ferrell blew me away in this movie I like him in general but his over the top portrayals get tiresome and this movie really showed that he doesn't have to be like that.

Christina Doxstader

It's still a comedy technically but given most of his filmographty I would say this movie is very serious. in comparison

Joits

Its been ages since I've seen this and it was a joy to relive this amazing movie again. I hope someday you will react to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

When it comes to accepting gifts, it's not just about avoiding bribes, it's about avoiding the possibility or even the APPEARANCE of a bribe. Last month one of our customers gave us $25 in a holiday gift card at the end of December, which they thought was just a nice gesture for the holidays. I spent three hours in a meeting with the Director and HR to determine how we could properly document and record this so nobody got in trouble. That was after I had to speak to the supervisor of the guy who accepted it in the first place to get him to understand that he should have refused it when first given (No punishment, he made an honest mistake, but he has to know not to do it again). Only $25! But we can't afford to even LOOK improper. (Our options were to divvy it up and distribute to all personnel, or spend it on something which could then be distributed to all personnel. Since we didn't want to count out pennies, I went to Dunkin' Donuts and bought $25 worth of Munchkins which we put in the lunch room).

Simon Pegged Me

For more Dustin Hoffman, I'd recommend Midnight Cowboy (1969) for a reaction, and for more Dame Emma, I recommend Dead Again (1991).

Ken Schneyer

This film is especially meaningful for writers. We want our characters to be as much like real people as possible, in order to evoke the empathy, sympathy, or antipathy of the reader. But managing those effects sometimes requires that cruel things happen to those characters, which, if we've done our job well, feels like deliberately inflicting pain on people. When I was in a master class (the Clarion workshop) 16 years ago, one of my teachers, the brilliant Kim Stanley Robinson, said, "For every unconsidered character death that occurs in your story, I condemn you to write 100 pages about the victim's family." This film is, I think, a manifestation of Stan's wish.

Ginger

The book "Redshirts" touches on similar issues, highly recommend it.

Ginger

I got to use it once (if you're ever in a situation where you have to hand someone a box of flours, how can you not say it? :D ) and it got a good laugh. :) Too bad the german dub makes no sense. I mean they tried. But he says: "I brought you a mailbox." (which sound kind of like "Mehl=flour box". It's rough). I don't envy anyone whose job it was to translate that joke.

Jenny MacRunnel

We have the same thing where I work. I work at a senior assisted living facility, and its illegal to accept "gifts" from the residents or their family members (its easy to take advantage of the elderly, especially if they have dementia, so this constitutes as abuse in the code) Family members are briefed about this when a resident moves in. We can accept things like food, if there's enough for all the staff. We just put it in the break room. They can also give us cards and letters, but not individually. At Christmas, the break room is full of goodies, almost all the families in our Alzheimer's unit and health care unit send something for us.

Angela D. Mitchell

As a writer, this is beautifully put. I agree that this film is so especially meaningful and poignant for writers. And while we can't suffer for every victim of tragedy we write about, we should feel for them (and their loved ones). This movie is really special to me.

Angela D. Mitchell

I just rewatched this reaction while finishing up some work (I'm a writer and editor, which is mildly ironic), and I realized I never commented on it. This is SUCH a good movie, and your reactions made it even more special because you both appreciated it so much, and you were so pleasantly surprised by how great it was. So many times, movies about writers fail on the actual writing, but here, the writing is so beautiful and eloquent, we can really believe that Karen is a world-class novelist, and that Harold is truly living a literary masterpiece about a sad, trapped man who dies just as he learns to live. I love this movie, and it really is about seeing and appreciating your life for the beauty of ordinary things -- like flours, cookies, and wristwatches.

Angela D. Mitchell

Secretary is amazing, and Maggie is superb in it. I would love them to react to it but I can't quite see it happening. I'd love to be wrong!
