“Lincoln” to see Abraham Lincoln turn in a great performance… I mean uh to see Daniel-Day Lewis in a great performance. Also “Kingdom of Heaven Director’s Cut” is the go at some point even if it doesn’t win 🤗

Jeff K.

Dang! Saw it was a history poll and was hoping The Right Stuff might sneak in there. Hope it gets added to a future poll.

Boyan Konov

George is going to love Spotlight it's basically competence porn on steroids. Also please vote for Malcolm x truly a masterpiece.

Mike FromOz

If you watch "Dances with Wolves", please make it the Director's Cut. It really does add back in a lot of good material and also helps the story make more sense as well.

Zhivko Yakimov

I am sure I won't be the last one to note this, but if ever "Kingdom of Heaven" reaches your playlist, make sure you watch the director's cut. This is one of the cases where the theatrical version cuts too much, and you get a much worse movie in the end.

probablyKoi

Really wish Darkest Hour or The King were on here - absolute UK bias but they’re amazing movies

Kwazimoto69

Dances with Wolves! ❤️ FYI the extended cut is not available on streaming but the 183min theatrical cut is readily available.

Rokkor X

Was hoping to see Mississippi Burning on here. Not perfectly accurate history but a true story and Gene Hackman kills it.

dudewheresmycar

Question for George? Which cut of Kingdom of Heaven have you seen? The theatrical cut or the more critically acclaimed Directors cut?

Smooticus

the only version to see

ShōNuff3K

There's only one of these that isn't up to snuff. So, cool with any.

dieselbeast

Maybe for a future history poll, it's very specific history, but it's simply "The Alamo" San Antonio texas, very tragic but inspiring story from texas history 🙏

TomGas2025

That thought came into my mind as soon as I read it. 😁

Justtired

Spotlight is very well written and the cast is superb. I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone react to it.

Monster Cat

I think you two should've included The King's Speech (2010).

Maiki

To honor the new Super Bowl champ, I'd like to suggest Invincible (2006)

Keith Jones

Two great Denzel performances in this list. Gotta go with Glory. It should be required viewing for Americans but honestly, you Canadians probably know more about our Civil war than most Americans. I was working at a civil war site when Glory came out. I remember reading a story where they had a lot of trouble getting enough extras for this film that could perform as soldiers. They ended up with civil war reenactors doing the performances...something like 20,000 of them.

Mike FromOz

Agreed. I saw it at the cinema and was like "Eh...". Then I watched the Director's Cut and it made it a whole lot better.

Chris H.

Why is Dances With Wolves listed in a history list? It is based upon a novel, and though it references historical events, is entirely a work of fiction.

Smooticus

Really surprised Glory isn't dong better. It's a terrific movie and made Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman household names. Matthew Broderick also hit is out of the park in his first truely dramatic role. If it doesn't win, Simone and George still need to see this movie

Balmung

Yeah I remember watching Glory when I was a kid and it leaving a lasting impression on me.

Smooticus

Other suggestions for historical movies The Mission (1986) Barry Lyndon (1975) Paths of Glory (1957) Matewan (1987) Eight Men Out (1988) Cyrano de Bergerac (1950) The Three Musketeers (1973) The Four Musketeers (1974) The Wind and the Lion (1975) The Man Who Would be King (1975) Hostiles (2017)

Amar

"Imitation Game" is another movie based on History. It is a movie about World War two and the life of Alan Turing. One of my favourite movies based on history.

Amar

Also "Zero Dark Thirty" is another movie based on the search for Bin Laden. I believe it is the best performance in have seen by Jessica Chastain.

The Gunslinger

A history film you should check out is Downfall. Set during the final days of Hitlers life in Berlin.

Amelie W

Doesn't look like it has a chance of winning, but I'd like to point out Kingdom of Heaven loses a LOT in the theatrical cut. In the category of movies that have been most improved by extended cuts, the top five I think is Almost Famous, Kingdom of Heaven and then the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

dieselbeast

Are you talking about actual history or the theatrical/directors version?

jmundt33a

Bunch a classics and Dances With Wolves just sits there like a guy who wandered into the wrong room. *groans*. Looking for its homies Driving Miss Daisy and Green Book. The room for the Oscar bait list is that-away.

John

This is a great list, though I will admit if Dances with Wolves and Spotlight beat Glory and Malcolm X this month, I will be very disheartened

Smooticus

Still a period piece, though

jmundt33a

My personal favorite on here, but I haven’t seen Malcolm X yet.

Smooticus

The Mission is a surprisingly forgotten gem

Raven Dark

I believe movies like this are considered historical, not because they are based on real events, but because of the time in which they are set. They take place way in the past, but depicting that past in a realistic way (unlike something like Lord of the Rings, which is set in a medieval-LIKE time, but it's fantasy). It's the same reason books that are labeled historical romance are called that. Most of the time, they aren't based on real events. They take place at some point way in the past, but with a realistic feel. Hope that makes sense. I think the only other thing one could call Dances is a western, but the movie is a lot more than that, and at least to me, that would put it too narrowly into a box it doesn't wholly fit into.

s0rd3z

Primer sort of is about history...

jmundt33a

If we’re doing that, Josey Wales or Unforgiven would be better choices. Maybe Michael Mann’s Last of the Mohicans?

Chris H.

"Period piece" isn't history. There's as much "history" in The Good The Bad and The Ugly as there is in Dances with Wolves.

jmundt33a

Great performances in Imitation Game, but the structure and direction leave something to be desired.

Random Nevermind

Two history movies to watch: The King's Speech The Favourite

paul rai

Lincoln is super underrated. It’s such a great examination of Lincoln as a master legal expert on how to work within the law during one of the most chaotic fracturing moments of American history and brokering deals with people amidst the unbridled anarchy of a U.S. Congress passing the 13th Amendment. It’s not a usual biopic but focusing on a pivotal moment of his life. The entire ensemble cast is great, with Daniel Day-Lewis delivering a towering performance. It truly feels Lincoln has come to life in the film. The dialogue and monologues are so beautifully constructed and delivered, and great historical accuracy detailed (something I’m sure George will appreciate).

jmundt33a

Wish Good Night and Good Luck made it on here. I see the perfect slot open for it.

jmundt33a

In the next sports list, maybe.

jmundt33a

True, but Costner won a bunch of awards for his directorial debut.

James Lester

Watching the directors cut is a must for it, agreed.

Raymond DeGraw

Looking forward to seeing these in the future... 1. The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) 2. R.E.D. 3. Falling Down 4. Secondhand Lions 5. In the Mouth of Madness

Maiki

Yeah, wasn't supposed to be a history suggestion, just in general :)

Martin

This would have been a great poll to put The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Just sayin’. Still, a lot of great movies here. Kingdom of Heaven is criminally underrated.

Helly R

Hugely inaccurate, though if that's your criteria.

jmundt33a

The 2002 Count of Monte Cristo. Definitely.

jmundt33a

Yes to the first. Hard no to the second.

Helly R

Throwing out Downfall and Branagh Henry V.

jmundt33a

Spotlight deserves recognition in spite of the exalted company here. It is excellent.

Nathan Swapp

Do the directors cut for Kingdom of Heaven

jmundt33a

Which George has done. So the people who want it blind for both of them might stay away from that choice.

Helly R

George likes Greek myth, right? Be cool to watch Jason and the Argonauts, which is still the best greek myth movie.

DemNikoArt

Aw man... Deepwater Horizon is sooooooo goooood. Too bad it already looks like it won't make it :(

Da Big Appa

Falling down is a movie I liked when it came out but now I think has not aged well. It's still a good movie to watch once but the plot is not one I really like in 2025. But that's just me.

Moon Logic

If you want a kind of sequel to Shogun, you should consider Silence by Martin Scorsese.

Ste Rawlings

I'll be praying for you Spotlight.

jmundt33a

Branagh has several good Shakespeare adaptations. If anyone should have the reputation Olivier somehow does, it’s Branagh.

Ste Rawlings

I always feel somewhat weird admitting that Spotlight is kind of a comfort movie for me. It's an odd one but I think it's the competent people doing things competently and the score that do it.

Mike FromOz

Yeah, and the way they shove Turing into a sterotypical portrayal of what Autism is sucks. Disability representation in movies is dogwater.

Alina

Such a shame! And I was so happy to finally see it on a list somewhere

jmundt33a

Cool. And Invincible is far superior to that Kurt Warner thing from a couple years ago…American Underdog?? Do I have that right? I love Zach Levi, but…that just….man.

Jihad Lee

Malcolm X or Glory I thought would run away with this poll, considering it’s Black History Month. oh well still excited to checkout the other movies. Hopefully Malcolm X and Glory are watched in the next 3 months at least because they are great

Brad Lowry

The 4 films that I recognize are absolutely MUST SEE! It seems incomprehensible that any one would win-out over the others! Great Poll, please do (as you always remind us, and often follow through on) revisit the non-winning genius films. YaY! 😁

Golandaz

So tough between Lincoln and Glory. Both great movies!

Itbewhatitbe

Chris, theyve never seen the movie, and chances are theyve never read the book either. so my guess is they just went by what the poster looks, which looks like a historical piece. its not that complicated.

jmundt33a

No. There are multiple movies from different decades with that name. Which one do you mean?

Neumann

No joke, spotlight is one of my all time favorites and I don't even really like movies like that normally

Adam Wetstein

DWW is not history but a made up appropriation of culture

dieselbeast

2004 with Denis Quaid and Billy Bob Thornton according to historians it is the most accurate story telling of the alamo

Eugene Reilly

Glory is really great. It may not win, but totally worth a watch.

Brad Lowry

As an Irish Catholic raised by an alcoholic mom, I am voting for "Spotlight" (not THAT kind of abuse, but who's competing?). But as an American Cinebinger I am honoring Black History Month and Spike and Denzel by voting for and encouraging anyone reading this to vote for "Malcolm X"!

Eddy V Ruiz II

if you have a spare 3 plus hours ... one of my fav movies

Michael M.

Have voted for Kingdom of Heaven and would like to encourage others to change their votes accordingly 😋

Mike FromOz

Barry Lyndon is amazing. It's like an oil painting come to life. One of Kubrick's best.

Matthew Johnson

Lincoln has some of the most beautiful dialogue writing in any movie ever. I really hope you guys watch that at some point because it’s like listening to music.

Ste Rawlings

Dances with Wolves is basically fiction and hits just about every problematic trope there is just fyi.

Lamar Savage

Spielberg's Lincoln has been my all time favorite film since it appeared in 2012. In my opinion it is a true masterwork in every aspect. It is not likely to win this poll, but I hope with everything in me that you two watch it soon.

Cisko

I don't think there are any choices on this list that I'd vote against (though I haven't seen Deepwater Horizon). Glory and Lincoln would make a nice thematic double feature.

Rupert Purcat

Spotlight is a brilliant movie about real journalism.

Florian

Dances with Wolf and Spotlight, two awsome movies 😍. I also highly reccomend Eurovision the story of Fire Saga, its about a song contest in Europe

Tay Schumaker

Spotlight is great, and something I haven’t seen a lot of reactors do. It doesn’t look like it will win, but if you do Kingdom of Heaven you have to do the directors cut. It’s such a better film than the theatrical cut

Rob Church

Gotta go with Spotlight. Really no comparisons.

Maiki

With excellent performances. They're all great, but Ruffalo stands out to me. So good.

lisa

Imitation Game; Mona Lisa Smile

Gearóid O'Sullivan

SPOTLIGHT is such a fantastically well made movie about an awful subject. Having grown up in super conservative catholic Ireland, it came as no surprise unfortunately. It cracks me up though, that the movie about courageous and diligent journalism was directed (brilliantly) by Tom McCarthy, who might be most famous for playing the shitty reporter Scott Templeton in season 5 of The Wire.

JayF

There are some incredible movies on this list but the clear choice is Dances with Wolves. Please do the theatrical cut. The director's cut drags in spots (remember The Blues Brothers?) and should only be watched after watching the theatrical IMO.

Jeff I.

Please no, that version kills the pacing of the movie and is also hard to find online (streaming wise). The theatrical version is Kevin Costner's preferred version, and his vision for the movie. The extended cut was basically a studio cash grab that Costner didn't have input on.

Jeff I.

I've never understood these "problematic" (usually a 'white savior' thing) comments about Dances with Wolves. I won't spoil anything, but the movie doesn't really fall into that trope at all.

Shehab Dawoud

Be honest, when was the last time y’all rewatched Dances With Wolves? One of the worst best picture winners in history.

Brad Lowry

Tony Kushner, the Tony Award, and Emmy Award winning, and Academy Award nominated (for "Lincoln" , gotta be) is the genius that wrote that "most beautiful dialogue".

Matthew Maxon

Kingdom of Heaven if the Directors Cut. What about 42 - The Jackie Robinson Story. Men Of Honor. About Carl Brashear who was the First Black Diver & Master Diver. Who also lost a leg & then came back to finish his career.

Smooticus

Jesus, I forgot to add The Right Stuff Dr Zhivago Miller's Crossing

Smooticus

The Right Stuff is a perfect companion piece to Hidden Figures

Smooticus

Or the 1980 Shogun with Richard Chamberlain. It's focused primarily from Blackthorn's PoV, but it's more faithful to the book in that regard where the new version deals with Toranaga's battle for the Shogunate

Tim T—

Brazil (1985) plays somewhere in the 20th Century. That would make it history.

JoeE

Definitely recommend matewan and eight men out

Ste Rawlings

I was thinking more the noble savage trope personally mate.

Ronny Boss

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee was another good one

Adam K

I’m shocked there isn’t more love for Lincoln. Daniel Day Lewis was absolutely spectacular in it. Such a deep and thoughtful film

GAB

It's as historical as Avatar.

jmundt33a

Zhivago is a historical novel. Like War and Peace or Les Miserables.

jmundt33a

Tuskegee Airmen? Or was that a miniseries?

Campbell Flynt

Kevin Costner loves doing vanity projects that show an America that doesn't exist and never did.

jmundt33a

I have personally found the immortal Goodfellas to be completely unwatchable.

TokyoLopez

Where is Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter at??? The most important historical piece of cinema ever created

mondawmin mall

For the love of God, Malcolm X is the best movie on this list. Please watch it

jmundt33a

Except Gods and Generals?

rictus grin

for future history/historic movies Waterloo The Duellists Reach For The Sky A Bridge to Far

jmundt33a

No. Just…no. Dances is the one that doesn’t belong here. I’d put Deepwater second to last and then let whoever wants to argue about the other classics just put them in some order. I enjoy Spotlight the most, but the others have strong arguments. Deepwater Horizon is good, it’s just overmatched here.

Chris

Criminally. I’ve never understood why Gladiator is the one that took off…

jmundt33a

Agree. Definitely worth a watch.

Dan Holmes

I get that it won’t win. But Spotlight NEEDS to be seen. By every reactor. It’s not an epic, honestly belongs more in a drama/mystery poll probably, but find time to watch it eventually regardless please 🙏🏻

Ian Hunt

Def think George will enjoy Spotlight with his love of competent people doing things competently…

Garrett Mazzuca

Pulling for Spotlight, but a lot of great options here.

jmundt33a

He gave them guns, became a tribal leader, and figured out where they should run. A lot of the tropes and dynamics Disney used in Pocahontas or Cameron used in Avatar have DWW as the most respected recent use. It’s part of why Eisener promoted the hell out of Pocahontas and animators were fleeing The Lion King for a seat at this table. They thought they were crafting a Best Picture Winner after getting a foot in the door with Beauty and the Beast. Dances and its reception is why they thought that.

Ken Schneyer

Dances with Wolves is a terrific film, but it is *not* history. While the events portrayed in it certainly *could* have happened, those particular characters & events are wholly invented. It is (excellent) historical fiction, not history.

Brad Lowry

How about "Matewan"? If not 'detail historical' then 'sort of' historical as per Labor Movements. Another John Sayles film that you can actually find is "Eight Men Out" the 'historical film' that explains the 'history' behind the 'magic' of "Field of Dreams". You also get to choose which actor you like best as Shoeless Joe Jackson: Ray Liota or DB Sweeny [X NOT John Cusak thanks jmundt33aX]

Skip577

If Spotlight loses to Wolves, something is very wrong.

j c

Why is Dances With Wolves on the poll if you've already seen Avatar and Pocahontas?

Young Blood Priest

Dances with Wolves over Malcolm X during black history month? Odd

Smooticus

I know. I've read it

Wormtongue

Oh yes, Kingdom of Heaven directors Cut plx

RLYtoxic

Holy walls of text.

RLYtoxic

I just vote for the movie on the list that I enjoy most. But you do you.

MDvortex

Dances with Wolves best film! Unfortunately only 3 hours... which go by too quickly

Jeff I.

This isn't a black history month poll?

Matthew Johnson

I also really like his scripts for Munich and the Fablemans. My dream miniseries reaction would be for Simone and George to do the HBO version of Angels In America.

Jobbe Smit

Well for starters I don't think most non-American voters know let alone care about that. Cowboys and Indians they know, black history month? Probably not.

Jobbe Smit

I mean it's certainly better than Avatar.

Spacedone

The best option here would be to watch Spotlight first and then follow it up with Dances With Wolves to emotionally recover from it. Also, seeing Deepwater Horizon on the list I'm just going to throw out my occasional suggestion to watch 'Patriots Day', which IMO is the best of the movie collaborations between Mark Walhberg and Peter Berg.

p0sthum4n

RIP Kingdom of Heaven, we hardly knew ye

sahliente

JFK, starring Kevin Costner, would be a nice addition to this category.

maikeru

weird comment.

maikeru

Although I don‘t dislike Dances With Wolves, I‘d prefer they watched The Color Purple. What a shame it didn‘t win any Oscar

maikeru

Never seen Glory although I wanted for a long time, I think I‘ll watch in the next days

maikeru

Amistad (1997) is missing on this poll

StonyD

Dances, most def.

Rachel W

"All the President's Men"(1976). Award winning film based on the Washington Post's reporters Woodward & Bernstein's book on their reporting on Watergate which brought down President Nixon.

Rachel W

Dances With Wolves isn't a true story.

Rachel W

But only one, Spotlight, is a true story.

Rachel W

100%. It's a travesty Goodfellas didn't win.

Roger Davies

boo Fern Gully is better than Dances With Wolves

Helly R

It's Journalism movie in the lineage of All the President's Men and Zodiac. It's fantastic.

Helly R

I'll go to bat for Gettysburg as a great battle movie. Gods and Generals is lost cause propaganda.

Donna Castellano

That should be in place of Dances With Wolves.

Donna Castellano

I'm glad someone said it!! I hated this movie. My cousin picked it twice for our movie trip, even tho I sat through it with my sister and dad, while it was at theatres. At least I got 6 good hours of sleep.

Max Carter

Spotlight is a tough subject matter but almost a perfectly made film in my opinion. Almost a must watch

Johnnycharco

You won't be disappointed, make sure you have some tissues handy. :)

Farbod

Missed opportunity to watch History of the World P1. Maybe the best comedy of all time.

Johnnycharco

I'm all in for Glory. Two other historical films that I'd love to see on the poll next time are 'Good Night and Good Luck' ( Edward R Murrow fighting McCarthyism) and 'The Pianist' ( Composer and pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman's story of survival in Warsaw during WW2). Both are amazing.

Johnnycharco

Just made a post to that effect as well and threw in The Pianist for good measure. :)

JarHead0351

that would of been a one good for a laugh - good idea

dave

All great choices, but in good conscience I can only vote for Dances With Wolves. It's that good.

joejud1017

oorah Jarhead0351. I was a combat engineer at Pendleton. Did sapper school with a squad of 0351's from 1/7 who came over from 29plms for the training. Good dudes. Nice to see you here.

Moonman

Not pertinent to this poll, just wanted to make a Severance request, smart reactors with smart show would be very good times.

JarHead0351

Kelly's Heroes is partly base on a true story which most people did not know

shaneth138

Spotlight is the best one here.

shaneth138

Dances with Wolves isn’t even a true story. How is it winning a history poll?

shaneth138

Exactly. Feels like the movie least related to the poll topic always wins 😆

shaneth138

Lmao a movie that isn’t even a true story on a history poll is the clear choice? Sure.

shaneth138

Yeah same. Weirdly rewatchable too considering what it’s about. I go back to it a couple times a year. It’s so good.

Christian Truheoh

Whenever you get around to watching Kingdom of Heaven make sure it's the director's cut which is far superior to the theatrical release. The theatrical version cut roughly 45 minutes of content and with major plot points changed.

Dor

'Dances With Wolves' and 'Glory' are actually a great pair to watch. They both concern the American Civil War of the 1860s, but tell VERY different stories in that time period - different from each other, but also very different from the usual Civil War media and its usual mythmaking.

FranciscoGios

In Kingdom of Heaven the last time I heard George say he only saw a few scenes on YT but not the whole movie, if only if it was winning the poll.

YYZHawk

Gotta be Spotlight

dys

Great picks here but George would especially love Spotlight because it’s pure “competent people doing things competently”.

Lycowolf

Watch 'Dark Waters' (2019) which also Stars Mark Ruffalo, with 'Spotlight' back to back.

Mike FromOz

Agreed. Both show facets of the time period that revolver around 'outsider' groups often not as well represented in depictions of the US Civil War.

James Smith

If Dances With Wolves win, please watch the theatrical version instead of the extended 4hr version.

Brandon Meng

Dances With Wolves is such a huge win -- Kevin Costner's best film for me and one I've seen a dozen times. Really looking forward to another watch with you both. Super excited about this one!!! For this genre I would recommend Life is Beautiful, The King's Speech, The Imitation Game. For other future polls, please consider the following: Perks of Being a Wallflower Manchester by the Sea Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Forgetting Sarah Marshall The Royal Tenenbaums Anything from director Alexander Payne (Sideways, Nebraska, The Descendants, The Holdovers, Election) Cheers! EDIT: I don't know where you are with picking another short TV series now that Shogun is over, so just wanted to also toss out Invincible for a TV show to watch. Thanks!

Brandon Meng

I think with the inclusion of Kingdom of Heaven, it makes it more of a historical/historical fiction type poll.

Jesse Coombs

I love Malcolm X. I think it's one of Spike Lee's best movies. I know it's not going to win, but I'd love for them to watch it (or other Spike Lee movies like "Do the Right Thing") someday.

Chris DeLuca

Do the runner ups get shuffled back into the polls at a later date?

Itbewhatitbe

yes, and they reappear in polls. but also they do 3 movies a week, the other 2 is almost always something from previous polls. also if a movie came really close in second place, they almost always do it in the same week anyways.

Jpsynergy

Love Dances with Wolves but this is a really stacked poll. Would love to see a Kingdom of Heaven directors cut reaction at some point. The directors cut is just a better, more complete movie.

Liquor & Swords

It's the only version worth watching. For those of you who don't know, and without giving too much away, the director's cut includes a character not seen in the short version, and adds more reason and motivation for an existing character's choices. Many scenes make more sense, etc. It's a much better film in every respect.

J.R.

you must be new to these polls

Chris

Can watch Avatar, aka the child of those two movies....

Chris

Also Last Samurai!

Jacob King

As a non-American I voted for Malcolm X and Spotlight. Dances with Wolves has a good global reputation, it’s not my sort of thing but it’s definitely got fans. Nobody outside the US has ever cared about Glory.

jmundt33a

This is his best film? Field of Dreams Untouchables Bull Durham Hidden Figures For The Love of the Game 13 Days Molly’s Game Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves No Way Out Wyatt Earp For my money, all of these are better films of his.

Brandon Meng

Yeah those are all fine, but I've always preferred Dances With Wolves. Definitely my favorite Costner movie.

No0neAtAll

As someone who grew up in the place and time of spotlight and having it impacting my life to this day I can not recommend this movie enough.

jmundt33a

Another worthy replacement.

jmundt33a

I honestly can’t tell if this is sarcasm. I find that disquieting.

Robinson vs. Parkinson's

OK, so when I saw the subject of this week's poll was history, I got my hopes up a bit. Let's just say that both of my recommendations for this week will be THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS and THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS. I'm just kidding you George, you're doing a great job and I'm sure that when LotM finally makes the big-time you guys will be blown away. BTW, the "History" connection is that the story is set during the French and Indian War.

Bill Woods

You liked Hidden Figures? Well, watch this: The Right Stuff (1983) -- the Mercury program from the Mercury astronauts' PoV.

jmundt33a

Nope. King’s Speech is excellent. Shakespeare in Love gets shit for Weinstein’s campaign. It was a worthy winner. Chariots of Fire is awesome. As for Crash, Green Book, and Driving Miss Daisy—these are Dances’ brethren. It fits right in. Around the World in 80 Days and Oliver are worse.

jmundt33a

Which was my point.

howtocookazombie (Stan)

I have a suggestion for a SciFi movie, which (in my opinion) is very interesting and quite unique: "Annihilation" from 2018.

Cory Garron

Dances with Wolves has only been on my list of movies to watch for about 35+ years, when I remember a classmate talking about it. That was around grade 3.

Brandon Meng

I hope you're not disappointed then. That's a lot of buildup!

Jeff I.

Fourth(ed?)! It's right up their alley.

Mark Messer

Hell, yeah, I’ve been wanting you guys to watch dances with wolves for years! Just fyi there is a directors cut that is four hours long. Personally, I think it does add a lot to the experience, but I think your audience might be more familiar with the shorter version. Either way, great movie. Cant wait

Mark Messer

I couldn’t agree more. I’m happy with either one though.

Mark Messer

It leaves out a lot of context

Mark Messer

I think they’re well aware that it’s not 100% accurate. I don’t even think that’s the point of this movie. It’s just a good story.

Mark Messer

There’s a four hour version too

Mark Messer

I feel like that’s pretty disingenuous. I don’t think that trope fits this movie all, but I can’t say anything without spoiling it.

Neumann

Also a fantastic and much needed reminder in this day and age of what real journalism is supposed to look like, particularly helpful since it wasn't that long ago at all

Mark Messer

After reading through all these comments, I would just like to say that I did not realize so many people hated dances with wolves. Please don’t bully simone and george because they decide to put these movies on the poll. That’s just not fair.

Cory Garron

Me too. Pulp Fiction was on my list until 2017, and that didn't disappoint.

Mikebdrx

Still patiently waiting and hoping for a Big Fish reaction 🤞

Blkm44

I agree, Malcom X is amazing. I will vote for it always, but I fear it will never place very high in a poll. Same with The Color Purple

shaneth138

So fictional history over real history? Personally, if there’s a history poll, I’m going to vote for something based on an event that actually happened in, ya know, history. 😅

Opti_Frog

Crap, i thought we would finally get that Spotlight reaction. 😑

jmundt33a

They would be in desperate need of comedy after that double feature.

jmundt33a

Cusack played Buck Weaver, not Shoeless Joe. Jackson was played by D.B. Sweeney. One of the few unmemorable portrayals in the cast.

jmundt33a

The TNT effort is probably as good as it’s going to get for quite some time. Which is okay. The TNT effort was well cast and excellently done.

jmundt33a

I prefer Joss’ version, but the ‘90s Much Ado is a lot of fun and has an absolutely LOADED cast.

Smooticus

We need more John Sayles on these channels

Smooticus

Unfortunately I don't think Waterloo is available on streaming. Luckily I own a blu-ray copy. Waaayyy better than that piece of dreck Napoleon

Smooticus

Crash comes to mind right away

maikeru

First, I thought sounds interesting I‘ll watch it today but looking at a few pics on imdb I was like damn I watched this 1,5 yrs ago. I remember liking it, the CGI was quite good. I think I‘ll watch "Men" today, also by Alex Garland. Maybe it‘s enjoyable. I‘ll rewatch Annihilation in the next days.

Shibby

+1 to this, the directors cut is a far better movie

Brad Lowry

S&G, thankfully, never experienced AIDS as a "crisis" so another "double-feature" might be indicated: • As the Band Played On - the Mathew Modine starring tv film that gives the terrible "Tick-Tock" of its emergence … then… • Angels in America - the great human literary story with the all-time cast of Al Pacino and Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson and also a then emerging cast of Jeffrey Wright, Mary-Louise Parker, Justin Kirk, Patrick Wilson and Ben Shenkman

Mike FromOz

Yeah, the Directors Cut is by far the better version. Follows the book perfectly and works as a much better narrative.

Mike FromOz

Yep, he is far too wooden in those other films. This one he seems to relax somewhat and just get into it better.

Brad Lowry

Maybe a way to shoehorn a Spike Lee film in is "Inside Man"! It's a bonafide kick-ass Heist Movie 🍿 done by one our greatest director.

jmundt33a

Inside Man is highly entertaining

Chris

Mohicaaaaaaaaans!

Jesse

It doesn't look like it's going to win, but if you do watch Kingdom of Heaven eventually, you really need to watch the Director's Cut. There's a lot of missing context in the theatrical version.

Maiki

Same, but the support it gets in the comments gives me hope, that we'll get it in the not so distant future. So that's something to be positive about :)

2026-09-05 05:00 It seems this is the place for pleadings: Robert Downey Jnr, Jude Law,Sherlock Holmes, directed by Guy Ritchie - who brings his knowledge of London and the underworld to the table. Excellent take on an old classic. Tempted? One of my favourite movies.

sad that Malcom X and Lincoln didn't get more love but happy to watch Glory for the first time :)

Mike FromOz

Both movies are wonderfully watchable. Great casts, dialogue and plots. Very fun to watch.

Kevin Ehle

Dances with Wolves? Better stock up on Red Bulls and pots of coffee. Gotta stay awake through that movie somehow.

Polecat21

totally agree - extremely slow paced

Diplo's Sandwich

Dances with Wolves is a beautiful Western, simple as that.

John Richards

"Dances with Wolves" is a period piece, but it's not history. It's historical fiction, not based on real people or events.

Jeremy Charlie

As much as I relate to the plight of the Redman as an Indian, and am looking forward to dances with wolves. Malcom x, and glory are also very good.

Brad Lowry

I think you could argue for 13 Days (and very detailed and very historical) …the others not so much … but we're quibbling about superlatives 😁 And what about the TRIVIA WINNER: The Big Chill where he plays the corpse of the character that there were putatively to be flashbacks to.

Rachel W

Spotlight! Spotlight! Spotlight! Simone loves clues and figuring things out movies and this is the best investigative journalism film since All the President's Men.

Rachel W

Can I suggest "Blue Velvet"(1986), the black black surreal mystery, directed by David Lynch as he recently passed.

Beddoe

Another +1 for the theatrical version of 'Dances With Wolves'.

Tall Paul

Is it wrong that I voted for the longest movie to troll George?

Chris DeLuca

Glory is a fine movie, but beating Spotlight is a travesty.

RabidMango

Dances is an alright movie but I have to admit I'm bitter that it beat Goodfellas for best movie and Costner beat Scorsese for best director. It's a meaningless award show but I'm still like...c'mon. Lots of good movies on the poll but I'm most excited for when they watch Spotlight.

Aaron Navarrete

First off, I just wanna say that I respect Dances with Wolves winning and I hope you guys enjoy it. That being said, please watch SPOTLIGHT in the not-so-distant future. It is such an important film that I feel should not be put in the very back of the "watch later" list. This is not your average film to be on the back burner like that. We all know George's love for watching "competent people doing things competently" and this film is all about that. So please consider watching this eventually, it's very eye-opening.

Mark Messer

I don’t know if you know this, but the’ll watch them all eventually. It doesn’t mean that one thing is objectively better than the other.

Ginger

I haven't seen "Dances With Wolves" since the 90s. Looking forward to see if it holds up. For the next round of history movies I'd like to suggest "Der Untergang" (Downfall).

Darin Foat

You'd think they would have let Lincoln win on his birthday...

Jay Davis

Just so happens it's the best movie ever made in history ever by anyone anywhere ever... but that may just be my opinion.

Jay Davis

The Ministry of Information approves this post.

JarHead0351

HEY DevilDog - I was station at Camp Mateo Camp Pendleton with 2/7 - 80-86 before they jump to 29plams - but I have trained at 29 plams twice - I did change MOS to 0352 Dragon Missile System - Semper Fi

MacGuffinStuff

Awesome, Dances With Wolves is a personal favorite, I even watch the extended version which is 4 hours. And Glory got second, that's also a must see. I have a feeling you guys will really like these two classics.

MDvortex

Dances with Wolves Nice! (without sarcasm)

RabidMango

I never said nor implied what was objectively better. Just my own personal excitement for one movie. I did say there are a lot of good movies on this poll.

Deivide Pereira

Please, watch Spotlight! One of my favorite movies of all time.
