Really hope you watch the lighthouse and the witch next, both by eggers and are amazing

Shehab Dawoud

Watching this in the theater was special. The first half was much better IMO. The score and the sound effects, it was the most unsettled and on-edge I've been in a long time. I agree with you about the mustache, I didn't like that either. But it's a tribute to Vlad The Impaler, the real life Dracula. I actually liked when they didn't show him, made him much more menacing. Definitely watch Robert Eggers' two other films. All of his films are different, but you recognize his style so clearly.

Odd Thomas

Depp has acknowledged a big influence on her was Isabella Adjani's performance in Possession (1981), which is THE iconic female freak out scene in cinema. Well worth watching.

Grandalf

Ended up going by myself in the theater and you are so right! Any Eggers film is amazing on the big screen. Also have to say, DO NOT miss Dune 3 by Denis Villeneuve in IMAX. Seeing Dune 2 in IMAX was probably the most awe-inspiring cinematic experiences I've had.

Grumblefunk

since you asked for another gothic horror rec: Crimson Peak (2015) by Guillermo del Toro

droodly

Unfortunately I think the the two they haven't watched are by A24, and they got all jerky with copy strikes. :(

Alexrandom

Guys ! The northman is, to me, the worst of eggers's last 4 films (and I still love it) so imagine what the rest are like. The witch is incredible (though pretty "simple" and straightforward) and The lighthouse is just utter craziness and an experience to behold! Hope you watch both, I promise you'll love it 😉

Funkachute

Great reaction! Please watch the other Eggers films you haven't seen too!

Justin James

Another film with Willem Dafoe you guys should watch is "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou"!

Grandalf

THE WITCH !!! You guys really need to watch the first major film by Robert Eggers. Also, my favorite horror genre is Cosmic Horror, especially Lovecraftian Horror. For that, I highly recommend THE VOID.

Grandalf

Yeah, that sucks. Movie companies really need to come around to the fact that reactions are great free advertising.

Logan Kerlee

Noice, noice, noice! Enjoyed this watchalong. :) It was a good time for sure. Not really sure which version I like more - this or the classic version.

Logan Kerlee

I was on board to watch that until I saw the imdb score it got on the page, IMDb gave it a ranking of 0.7/10. Is it actually that bad? I sincerely doubt it but until I have a reason to watch that one I'm gonna pass.

ShadowStunts

You guys should definitely watch The Lighthouse. Imo by far Eggers' best and one of the most bizarre movies in recent years.

Shane Driscoll

"I wonder if Willem Defoe plays a vampire in this film?" Ahem... *clears throat* WATCH SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE! YOU'LL THANK ME LATER! I'll show myself out.

p0sthum4n

Robert Eggers can't stop winning. Everything he makes is genius.

Tomas

This was great! Another amazing Dafoe performance is in The Boondock Saints, which you should watch.

FranciscoGios

I agree about Skarsgard was ripped from his acting role with Count Orloc but the best performance by Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily Rose Depp is by far the best. And by far my best Vampire movie to date. Sorry Simone I only know a few lore about Buffy, and only few characters from that show. The language Orloc is speaking is older than Romania called the Dacian language. Also he doesn’t need oxygen to live only blood, noticed when he speaks he gasps heavily just to make out words. Believe it or not Orloc was a human and was practicing dark magic and was attending a dark sorcerer school called Scholomance and supposedly this school was located on the same mountains his castle was in the Carpathians AND ALSO this school was taught by the devil and in which Orloc was turned into a Nostferatu by Satan. The devil gaved Orloc “shadow powers” to control the weather and ever lasting life and other abilities. The contract Thomas signed was not about buying a house 😂. It was for Thomas giving Orloc complete control over his soul, like a puppeteer as Simone mentioned. Orloc’s main goal was to make Ellen a Nostferatu a type of demon like vampire not just feeding off of her body. The information about Ellen is when Knock was describing to Thomas about Ellen that she is beautiful and a sliph a mortal magical Elemental but without a soul but wants to be loved.

Ste Rawlings

Yeah I think I need to just accept that Eggers films aren't for me.

Drew

Oh my, the rental is $20. Im gonna have to wait a month till it drops

Grumblefunk

imdb shows a rightful 7.3/10 for Possession when I just looked it up, def an old favorite

Jeff I.

Great reaction! I agree with the main complaint about Skarsgard being so covered up that it kind of disappointed me that someone of his talent was basically just there for his voice, but I thought the rest of the movie was pretty good overall. I'd suggest the awesome horror movie Barbarian from 2022, if you want to see Bill Skarsgard doing a great job in a more "normal" role.

Ken

What if Skarsgard wasn't actually wearing all those prosthetics, what if his embodiment of evil was just so intense that he was unrecognizable, and it was this that ended up scaring him so much.

Smooticus

Eggers' stuff isn't really all that scary, but that guy can craft a great movie. I've been a fan since The VVitch

Dazzler & Em

You definetly have to watch the lighthouse. Dafoes performance in that, is over the top and completely mesmerising.

Dylan Bollinger

Eggers is known for his historical accuracy like biting the chest for example is what ppl back then said they did never was biting the neck they bite next to the heart.

Mike FromOz

If you like movies with a lot of full body acting, then check out "Posession" (1981) with Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neil. Isabelle goes all out, and I can definitely see her influence in Depp's performance here. A hearty recommendation. You are not prepared for it.

Ste Rawlings

it's emotionally sanitized in a way that makes it hard to really care about the characters. It’s all beautifully composed and shot but I don’t care about what happens to anyone in the film so it rings hollow very much like the northman. It's also less interesting thematically than the other 2 Nosferatus/Dracula films I've seen. Eggers just doesn't have anything to say. As far as the performances go Lilly Rose Depp gave an incredible physical performance but her line delivery was really iffy, Dafoe seemed to be the only person in the film who actually got the tone of the material correct. I think you guys think Bill is a much better actor than he actually is.

REDR58

This was very good, but I still think “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992) is overall a superior version of the story. Gary Oldman is simply not to be missed. I highly recommend you watch it ASAP with the Nosferatu movies fresh in mind. Silhouette portraits are called “cameos.” The “double sacks” are just saddle bags but surely Simone knows that given she has spoken of working with horses? The crosses on the beach are for people lost at sea. Thomas Hutter is also his name in 1922 Nosferatu movie. There is an extended version of this movie. Both versions are on the new Blu-ray/4K discs that are on sale/presale now. I wonder if that ether is supplied by Keir?

REDR58

I partly agree. When I really enjoy a movie I want to watch it again soon and there is little here for me to want to revisit it anytime soon. I really enjoyed the performances but I really wanted more out of Orlok.

Dee

Hemlock Grove is a series done by Netflix. I would say it's mid at best, but Bill Skarsgard was amazing.

José Sebastian Rebolledo

You guys have to watch "The Taking of Deborah Logan", speaking of demons confused with Mental illness

WalrusWallace

I was about to make a comment on Barbarian too haha. It's a fun time and Bill Skarsgard is great in it

WalrusWallace

Since you enjoyed this movie, I also recommend The Witch (2015). It's also directed by Robert Eggers and Anya Taylor-Joy is great in it.

China Andronicus

I know others have mentioned it, but you should now really watch Shadow of the Vampire, which is a fictional telling of the making of Nosferatu if they had found and cast a real vampire in the role. Willem Dafoe got an Oscar nod for playing Orlock and he's phenomenal, as is John Malkovich as FW Murnau. As far as other silent films, you should definitely add Cabinet of Dr Caligari to your Chaplin films. It's another German Expressionist horror film and it's phenomenal. The sets are gorgeous (you can see a lot of Burton's inspiration in them) and the storyline is wonderful. As to Dafoe, you definitely need to get to Platoon. The director cast him and Tom Berenger against their usual type of good guy/bad guy, and both turn in amazing performances. I see it's doing fairly well in your recent poll so hopefully you'll do it soon! 🤞🏼

michael denny

super late here but i wanted to say if you dig these vibes. watch penny dreadful

Philipp Roensch

Had to wait for this rewatch a bit, for the physical release, but worth it :D. The Blu-ray also has the extended cut, it is only 4 minutes more, gives a bit longer scenes of the exposition and easing into the scenes. I love the added backstory for Ellen, and more cultural color to Nosferatu. Got a lot out of the performances, all captivating. And had the shared experience with a younger generation friend, who did not see the original, did get him good in the cinema! The "forest of stones" mountain formation are Prachov Rocks, made of sandstone, quite common in Eastern Europe, especially in the Czech Republic and further south. The courtyard and Interiors were filmed at Pernštejn Castle and Rožmitál Castle there, while Wisborg is surprisingly lots of sets. Beautifully convincing sets, I would say.

Redrum Sacrament

The one time these two don't watch the extended version. They really liked the movie yet still had shit to complain about lol. I've seen this movie a couple times before but I feel I notice more stuff this time around than the previous times. These two revealing spoilers of the 1922 version. Lily Rose Depp not shy of being in the flesh. I feel this movie is underrated due to some people maybe just didn't understand the time period or just not their thing. The director keeps the time period of when a story is taking place accurate. I feel this movie had a bigger budget than what Robert Eggers is used to working with and didn't disappoint.
