While not the best Bond movie, it is one of my favorites because of how grounded the basic plot is. Destabilizing governments and exploitation of 3rd world water rights. I found the story a nice change of pace from the world ending stuff they usually do.

I have watched Casino Royale a lot over the last few months and as well as being thoroughly entertaining it has also done something I didn't think was possible... It has made me realise that Quantum of Solace is in fact quite a good film. Sure, it has significant weaknesses like the frantic editing during action sequences and muddled plotting but I'm often inclined to forgive execution issues when the intentions are good and there are hints of brilliance peeking through. There is some really great stuff here like the use of Camille as a reflection of Bond and his journey battling with grief and revenge. As I mentioned previously the plot is muddled and unfolds at breakneck speed which on a first watch can really distract you from the great work being done under the surface. Until my most recent watch of Quantum of Solace I, like everyone in the film thought James was out of control and stacking up bodies on a quest for revenge when in actuality he is doing the total opposite. He has buried himself in his work in an attempt to hide from his grief. All of the kills he carries out are either for good unemotional reasons or unavoidable, and most importantly he does not take revenge by killing Dominic Greene or Yusef Kabira who were the 2 people actually complicit in Vesper's death. It does have significant flaws and it may work better as an extended coda to Casino Royale but Quantum of Solace is a better film than it is given credit for, and tells a story about revenge and whether there is any solace to be found in not pursuing it.

Hey Everybody! And welcome to..... Simone's ongoing vocabulary lessons!

Peaks and valleys. The next one is excellent. Please don't wait another 3 years :)

Maiki

Exactly. TV-Shows, Spin-offs etc. The Marvelization continues. Very surprised though, that the Broccolis are backing off.

FischerMax98

Easily my least favorite of the new Bonds. Just bad all around. Only one guy's opinion. Lets see what you honestly think of it. Next one is my favorite though. Can't wait.

I have worked in hotels for 30+ years. That was absolutely a set. You don't build a fancy hotel (with or without) an implausible and highly explosive power system out in the middle of nowhere. As evidenced by the fact that through that whole 3rd act scene at the "hotel" - there were no other guests.

Alexrandom

Commenting as the movie starts, you make me laugh a lot! Just know that every time you think "we're insufferable" I think "they're so fucking funny" 😂 Love you guys so much !

Alexrandom

Oh god! Can this movie have shots that last for more than 1 second ?! 😭 I tend to be more on the positive side of things and always try to find qualities in movies but these action scenes are pieces of shit. I know they had huge production problems but this is more than that.

Odd Thomas

Screw the haters, this has one of the best Bond openings ever, and more than makes up for in action what it lacks in story. Please continue the series!

Mastervodo

I guess all the explosions were CGI? Or maybe they made a mini-set they could explode? But ya, it's not a commercial hotel.

Harry Fieldson

Skyfall, the next entry in the Craig era Bond films after this one, is my favourite. Really hoping you guys continue with these. :) would be great to see your reactions

Hakuna

The rest are great please don't wait too long!

This movie was such a letdown after Casino Royale. One of the worst Bond films of all time.

HansD

You want to see Olga Kurylenko again, watch Oblivion (2013). She's there with Tom Cruise, Morgan freeman and Andrea Riseborough.

The fuel cells in the hotel were hydrogen. Puncture those with a spark around and you have a whole lot of shit going on. So the series of explosions made sense. Using Hydrogen to fuel a hotel not so much.

djKENTO

Don’t worry George, the series never looks this bad ever again. This is the one off truly “bad” film in the Craig bunch.

Just to add some additional context (with spoilers): Most Bond movies have a very loose continuity. Its best not to think about it too much, but to just roll with the idea that the actor you are watching IS Bond, and we have the usual cast of M, Moneypenny, Q, etc. around him. The Crag movies are different, in that they intentionally broke that formula, with Casino Royale serving as a sort of origin story for the character, and they have their own individual continuity along the 5 movies. So the best way to think about it is that the 'M' from the Brosnan movies is not the same 'M' from the Craig movies, even though both are played by Judi Dench. Craig's era has its own unique continuity. This movie is the first 'direct' sequel in the entire series, taking place basically right after the end of Casino Royale. Mr. White, the man Bond has his in his car at the start of this movie, is the man he shoots in the last scene of Casino Royale. If you recall, he's also the one who saves Bond's life by shooting Le Chiffre, as Le Chiffre failed their organization (Quantum) by losing their money. It is this same organization that forced Vesper to betray Bond. So the organization that is represented in this movie as 'having people everywhere', is the one that Mr. White and Vesper's 'boyfriend' were a part of, that funded Le Chiffre and the plot of Casino Royale to begin with. This is a very messy film, that clearly didn't quite hit the landing when it comes to execution, and the editing truly makes entire chunks of it incomprehensible, but I love how much of a character study it ended up being of Bond's character. It basically serves as an epilogue to Casino Royale. I really hope you guys are able to get to the rest of Craig's films, especially the next one, Skyfall, relatively soon! There's a lot to enjoy in these movies! I'm also reaaaaally hoping we get to see some more Bond films on the whole. Since you've already seen Goldeneye, it would be great to see your reactions to the next two Brosnan movies, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World is Not Enough. Its very interesting to see the difference in tone and approach between the Brosnan era and the Craig era. I, for one, think both of the aforementioned two Brosnan movies have aged very very well, especially Tomorrow Never Dies, which is a blast from start to finish, and seems very ahead of its time for 1997.

Chris Servais

I'm glad to see you guys watching more Craig Bond movies. This is a polarizing one, but I think it's great -- one of Craig's best Bonds. Looking forward to Skyfall maybe :)

Philipp Roensch

All the sympathies with writers who worked on this until the strike, and of course writers striking to get their voices hear. I kinda put the flaws in logic and edit on the director, but he too was under some immense time constraints there. That all the Craig Bonds tell a grander connected story is quite cool, but apart from literally giving no time to grief, this is more of a bookend to Casino Royale. I like some of the ideas for tricks and stunt, still keeping the visceral and brutal Bond around that Craig fits so perfectly. He is kinda betting on luck in some of these encounters^^. The edit is bad, but some pretty stills and for how little sense that hotel makes, its a cool location to blow up. Very excited for Skyfall though, one of the very best Bonds!

Philipp Roensch

I love Olga Kuylenko, she can decently act, but Bolivian is just too far fetched. She is a better Bond Girl in Hitman, it's cheesy but works imo.

Christian Rennie

"James Bond goes to the market.." 🤣 The SNL skit practically writes itself...

Quantum of Solace always felt odd to me and it’s my least favorite of the Daniel Craig-Bond films but after hearing what you said after about how this whole thing was rushed from script to production all the way to editing , It makes so much sense now why this I didn’t like this film . The premise was a good start and I think if it was given time to fully develop instead of being rushed then this could have been a great sequel to Casino Royal. Hopefully you both will start Skyfall sooner than later 🙏

FranciscoGios

A least George didn’t forget that there were more Daniel Craig’s Bond movies they needed to watch and react to. And please my friends don’t forget to watch the rest, Skyfall is the beginning of the last two, story wise.

REDR58

Gemma Arteton is one of the highlights of this movie, despite her having very little to do. Opening sequences for Bond movies are generally very stylistic and more or less relate to the movie’s plot but this one and the song were pretty weak. All the other Craig Bond movies have better/much better opening titles and songs except for that hackneyed Sam Smith song in “Spectre.” But I think “Casino Royale” has the best opening titles and one of the best songs for the bond films second to “Skyfall.” Glad the shaky cam quick quick quick cut era seems to be over. There’s no chance to get a solid look and actually appreciate what we are seeing. Anyway, this movie has one or two interesting set pieces but as a whole it’s rather unremarkable. Speaking of Chaplin’s granddaughter, Chaplin’s daughter Geraldine Chaplin appears in Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom. The “metal jaw” refers to a character that appears in 2 older Bond movies with Roger Moore, “The Spy Who Loved Me” and “Moonraker,” both of which are way better than QoS.

Farbod

I forgot how truly awful this film was. At no fault of the actors. I really like the cast, but it was just a really poorly made film.

FranciscoGios

I didn’t know who was Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter until I Googled her, I guess George has more of a keen eye.

REDR58

I didn’t know about the granddaughter either until he mentioned recognizing her from Game of Thrones.

Rupert Purcat

Great Bond movie - don't get the hate. It took you so long to get to it (April 2022). Hope you can watch the bonds more regularly.

Drew

If the Bond series continues, I think it’s worthy of a Collection tab

Brien Kliver

This movie had so many cuts I thought I was 18 again, back in college, at a random apartment kegger 8 solo cups in! Jesus Christ the editing made me dizzy!

UncleGaGa1979

“Can a movie be over-edited?” Hells yeah they can. Two words: Michael Bay And two more other words: Taken 3

David Lonewolf Wright

That guy would not have survived in the trunk of that car with that chase sequence. I forgot how choppy the action sequences were, I mean can we have more than 2 seconds before a cut please?
