Grave of the Fireflies - Patreon Version

Comments

JediLounger

So this is a Studio Ghibli movie. Even though it is owned and distributed by Toho, I would be super careful about posting that YouTube cut. Natalie Gold has not had any issues with her Patreon only Ghibli movies, so this video should be fine. Also, I hope you guys took a break between this and Dances with Wolves. That's a lot of crying for one day.

Odd Thomas

Nimona and Weathering With You are great recent animations

Gryff

OOF. This is a 'should watch at least once' movie. That being said, I won't be watching it again with you, but I'm proud of you for getting through it.

mky

I'm about to start this one. Is this a fun Studio Ghibli movie about kids playing with magical fireflies? Is Totoro in this one? Can't wait! (On the other hand: 😢😢😭😭😭)

WalrusWallace

My first time watching this movie and I feel like I've been eviscerated. It is a beautiful film though and watching it with you guys made it more bearable. The Sakuma fruit drops were also my favorite treats as a kid so seeing them here really took me back

Mr. Treat

If you need a good pick me up after this one, I suggest requiem for a dream. Very uplifting

attackthehole

lmao poor Simone endure through this tragic story and George put all the effort into editing a copyright risky anime film only for a bunch of comments to say "No thanks im not watching this"

Tom Hess

Ah yes, perfect film after Dances With Wolves. I didn't want to regain faith in humanity anyway.

"Grave of the Fireflies" is part of that generation of movies that "want to show the new generation how hard things were during the war", because "they've gotten too used to affluence and prosperity." Another example is "Barefoot Gen." Unfortunately, the mission of such movies is to be sad and heartbreaking... I reacted just like Simone the first time I watched it. The final scene, with Setsuko's and Sei-chan's ghosts looking down from a hill at a big, modern (1980's) city, was supposed to suggest that the ghosts of those who suffered during and after the war are still there, looking at us, who live in an affluent society, to make us have some perspective on our own problems.

Sergio Meira

I can tell you what I did after I first watched Grave of the Fireflies, a couple of decades ago. I cried like a baby, feeling really bad. Then my wife came in with some tea and cookies, and I felt better. :-)

Grumblefunk

lol true but george does do most of the actual work for this channel so he's prob used to it

Drew Acheson

I am surprised you did this given the previous talk about how Ghibli is about copyright strikes

djKENTO

went watch this, found out my copy is missing, went to go buy a new copy… over $100 bucks for a blu-ray. God I hate that.

REDR58

Yikes. I found a Region B version on Amazon for $37 US but I just watched it on Netflix.

djKENTO

ugh I hate that AppleTV never includes Netflix in it’s searches. Glad it’s there. I’ll watch it another night tho. Not in the mood for that kind of emotional damage right now.

REDR58

Here is the brightened poster art showing the silhouette of a B-29 (not a “B-25,” that’s a different aircraft) among the incendiary bombs/fireflies: https://www.reddit.com/r/MovieDetails/s/XaNIoNiSq3 I don’t think the older woman on the train looking at his box of cremains was uncomfortable as much as she was understanding. We get many fireflies In Pennsylvania in July and they last until about August, but start to diminish in numbers after a few weeks. We also call them “lightning bugs” interchangeably. Some summers there can be thousands of them. Fireflies do not bite or sting. They are just small beetles and are harmless to humans and other animals. They live about 2 months in the wild.

I did know about this movie's time setting but I had stayed away from details since I was a kid. In the mid 90s I watched Ranma 1/2 or sci-fi anime stuff like Macross, Project A-ko, and Appleseed. But I'm glad I got to finally see and watch along with the both of you. I don't think I could have got through this movie alone and I had many times during this watch along to just stop completely. I'm crushed. I do know it is important to accept and acknowledge this story parallels real life. I shouldn't have watched a reaction to Glory earlier today. I think i'm gonna have some tea and look at old photos. Cherish who i've lost then hug and appreciate who I still have.

droodly

I hadn't watched this before and... well, remember how at the end of the "The Mist" reaction you said "fuck you patrons"? Back-atcha cine-jerks! :P

On the political side, I hear that according to Japanese accounts people are starting to be more vocal of the destruction and pain they caused around the WW2 era. However, just like in Germany, I appreciate that we get stories from people who were just living at that time under that regime. Makes even villains more dimensional. A lighter side note, I know that Japan dominates adult animation but with the Chinese animated movie Ne Zha 2 (not saying Ne Zha is adult animation- I have no idea) making an impact on the USA box office I would be interested in watching you react to any that are well regarded since I know little to nothing about Chinese animation - if you like. 🫶🖖

"What do you do after?" You watch "My Neighbor Totoro", one of the most wholesome movies ever. Both were produced by Studio Ghibli at the same time and shown as a double feature. Whoever came up with the idea was a mad genius.

This movie makes me cry every time. It's one of the best war tragedies I've ever seen... Also, George mentioned bat bombs. There WAS a U.S. military project called Project X-Ray, where they would attach timed incendiary devices to bats, put those bats into a bombshell that would be dropped and opened to deploy the bats over Japanese cities. The idea was that the bats would go to roost inside the wooden buildings all over the target area, and then explode in flames. The project was never deployed, because of the success of the Manhattan Project. I heard a story of this project on NPR one night, with one of the main members of the project being interviewed.

This movie messed me up for like 2 weeks no joke

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

Boy of all the Ghibli movies you guys had to pick the most downer one huh? At least its a mercifully short 90 minutes. I jest though, I was really looking forward to your return to anime movies. Hayao Miyazaki’s fantasy worlds are Ghibli’s signature but Isao Takahata’s much more grounded approach to animation acts as a solid contrast in the Ghibli filmography. One can easily picture this as a live action movie but the very patient, neorealistic direction really fills out the short runtime and shows how effective animation can portray tragedy in a story like this without it getting melodramatic or schmaltzy. Great watch but I hope y’all have something more lighthearted like “Castle In the Sky” lined up for next time.

OMG! This?! I need to download this video before the studio takes it down 😅

I believe the aunt's opinion is that Seita should go work in a factory 14 hours a day for the glory of Japan and bring home more fancy food while Seita should get over her trauma and become a happy child on her own. Maybe she's under a lot of stress because of the near-famine, or maybe it seems to her Seita is wasting all his time because she has no concept of compassion. I don't know, I don't like thinking about her part in the movie.

s0rd3z

Been a long time since I watched this and for a reason. I will need to prepare myself for all the feels. Check out Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, Kiki's, Totoro etc. etc. there are no "bad" Ghibli films IMO

Jesse Coombs

The director is wrong. This movie is very anti-war. I don't know what his intention is, but if he thinks this movie thinks war is good, he's wrong.

Solzb44

Those losers who comment that are the same ones begging for Kazaam or grown ups 2

Philipp Roensch

Have been hearing about this one for a while, but this was also my first watch. Great movie, terrible that it is so real. The iconography of fire raids, fireflies intertwined and the hope quickly fading for this pair. I think Seita did a great job, he did as much as he could to keep her sheltered and living in these times. I saw after the final raid the fields were also burned, so then it was over. On the political side, I believe Seita was also loyal to his father yes, but his memory of the navy was already an illusion to him. All the sympathy is with single characters, less the nation while just like in Godzilla, the bombers have a supernatural, disconnected quality to them. On the whole I just read that as personal tragedy, not remaining sympathy for the Emperor's nation.

Christian Rennie

Finally recovering emotionally from this watch-a-long two days later. This a special movie. Even with its lows.... totally worth it.
