Looking at the thumbnail... yeah I knew that film was going to break Simone.

Bad Habit Babbitt

Well if you guys are wanting to see that scenery just head South to South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah.

The original Avatar but actually good.

jmundt33a

The original Avatar/Fern Gully

I've always wanted to see the black hills. I think I might just have to make a trip this year.

Spencer M. Day

I love this film, and you all did a great reaction. Your intro was fun to watch, and then to see your reaction to what the film really was. Bravo!

Jeff K.

Gonna take this opportunity to go ahead and recommend Last of the Mohicans (the DDL version, not any older ones). Also, for baby Costner as a cowboy (and a stacked cast that includes Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, John Cleese, and Jeff Goldblum), I would also recommend Silverado.

Matt O'Keefe

Knew Simone would love it and that she would cry.

Regarding the language, from what I've read the actors do relatively good with speaking what they were taught, but they were actually taught incorrectly: The Lakota language is spoken differently depending on the gender of the speaker, and they got a female language teacher for the film, so all of the men are speaking the female form. Apparently it sounds HILARIOUS to people who understand the language.

I remember I had to ride 2 miles on my bike to watch this—all downhill. By the time it was done it was already fully night and I had to ride those 2 miles back uphill. Most movies I watched then didn’t hit that 3 hour mark so it was kind of new thing to have it not be done while it was still light outside. But it was totally worth and earned its extra runtime. This is probably my favorite Costner role. I even got to tell him because he came into the bookstore I was working at later on and I rang up his books once.

Actuarial Lurker

Horrible truth about indigenous peoples in BOTH the US and Canada and as a pet lover (dogs and cats) horrified by what happened to the poor wolf he befriended

REDR58

Still, I appreciate that the effort was made at all. The movie is much richer for having any other local language in it and not just everyone speaking English.

Simone- The American Civil War ended in April 1965 and The major turning point of Gettysburg where the South was repelled out of Pennsylvania (their furthest northern move) was in July 1863. So the opening of the movie is right when the South is at its peak

Actuarial Lurker

The drunk local commander who signs off on the transfer out west and pisses himself is Canadian-American actor Maury Chaykin who was in My Cousin Vinnie as the guy who cooks grits testifying against the two kids. he was in War Games , Twins among others and TV shows

If you guys enjoyed Kevin Costner, I would suggest (if you haven't seen/reacted to them yet) Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Postman, and (unpopular opinion, I think) Waterworld. I feel that each of these movies are extremely well written and acted, and entertaining in unique ways, and I really think the two of you would enjoy watching them!

The metal helmet that the Medicine Man Kicking Bird shows John Dunbar is Spanish Conquistador armor from the early 1500s- so they saved the item for 350 years to remind themselves of their oppression

Paul T Hewes

Wind in His Hair, yelling down about how he is Dunbar's friend, mirroring how he said he wasnt afraid of him when they first met...Gets me every time.

Darin Foat

For me one of the best things that came out of this film was that it really boosted the career of Graham Greene, who plays Kicking Bird. He's a marvelous actor who's been in a ton of cool things, and this really put him on the map.

Zinphad

Little Big Man (1970) covers similar themes with a lighter tone (though not completely light).

Mike FromOz

*After a long sleep* "Ahh great, Dances with Wolves is up, I wonder what the reaction is going to be" *Looks at thumbnail* "Ayup..." Sorry Simone and George. I've not seen your reaction yet, but I am about to settle in to do so.

Ari Ramirez

"I got a mule fact!" has to be one of the most Simone sentences I've heard

Jane Harker

Another great Indigenous versus White movie, "The Last of the Mohicans" (1992) should be watched, starring the greatest actor who ever lived, Daniel Day-Lewis. Also, has the same actor as bad guy, Wes Studi.

Dylan Thomas

Many of the Native Americans were actually Cherokee and were speaking the Cherokee language. I learned this from one of the extras at a Cherokee festival he thought it was funny that no one could tell the difference in language and appearance.

Dylan Thomas

If you guys enjoyed this and would like another movie similar in tone I suggest Last of the Mohicans the Daniel Day Lewis version. Fantastic film with a great storyline and beautiful epic music throughout.

EnwhyZee

I would highly suggest a reaction to the "History Buffs: Dances with Wolves" for background info that covers the movie, and period of time. Can make it part of the experimental reactions since its a long video

Stephanie

I'd like to add A Perfect World. For me his best performance.

Mitch M

YES! Fantastic film. I'd also recommend Thunderheart, with Val Kilmer. More of a thriller than a drama, but also a really well-written story about the mistreatment of indigenous people. And it stars Graham Greene too, who played Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves.

parker469a

The really strange thing is to not make buffalo jerky out of all of that wasted meat. In just a few days you could have enough dried meat to last for months.

Rupert Purcat

May I recommend Hidalgo as a great horse movie.

Emily Gray

One of my favorite movies he's in!

James Falato

This was one of the Best Wins for "Best Picture"... Absolutely Deserved...
