Mel Gibson is so different in this, I almost didn't recognize him since he wasn't slandering jewish or black people

When George mentions on the poster Max looks like an anime character, he’s not wrong. The Mad Max esthetic was a big influence on the manga Fist of North Star, and so many more that came after.

Baron Imhoof

In public. But you can bet it was more than abundant when he was talking to that nutbag of a father he had.

Warmachine1228

Btw, the Director being a medical doctor explains why the injuries look so real especially on such a low budget film.

JediLounger

Fun fact. Hugh Keays-Byrne played both Toecutter and Immortan Joe. Sadly he passed away in 2020.

WayneC

Sprog is Australian slang for children.

Jeff K.

I haven't watched this movie in probably 20 years, so man, I totally forgot just how long we go before seeing Max get Mad.

Darin Foat

I can't wait for you guys to watch The Road Warrior. If you're interested in another Mel Gibson film from this period, I highly recommend Gallipoli. It's an excellent historical drama from Peter Weir, who went on to direct Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show and Master and Commander.

Mike FromOz

"Gallipoli" is an absolutely brilliant movie. And it came about around the same time Australia was shrugging off a lot of the remaining British cultural domination of eras previous, alongside other films, including "Breaker Morant".

Nicholas Bielik

I like this movie, but the next film is the full flowering of the franchise. Mad Max 2 (titled The Road Warrior in the U.S. because the distributor didn't want to market it as a sequel) essentially creates the subgenre of post-apocalyptic action films.

Everyone is going crazy because humans have destroyed the natural environment, i think through pollution or radiation? and also there is a massive oil shortage which triggered hoarding and stealing of gas/petrol among the population . This all leads to roaming gangs forming and the overworked and outmatched police and government can't keep up and all authority collapses.

The hood reduces drag, so if youre chasin somebody you can't catch and lose the hood of your car... youre definitely not catchin them

Godrick

do you think Mel Gibson was already hatin jews and casually using the N word, or do you think that was something that developed in his middle aged years?

James Falato

The Film cost $400 Thousand to make, and it grossed over $100 Million to have the highest Cost-to-Profit in Major Film History - until "The Blair Witch Project"...

James Falato

P.S. - This was Mel Gibson's "Breakout Role"...

Michael Johnson

Vanishing Point and Two Lane Blacktop are good too. Came out the same year - 1971

Marcus Hicks

Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this, but this movie was made at the height of the 1970s Energy Crisis, so this film was most likely extrapolating what would have happened if the crisis had continued or even worsened.
