George: Worse reality TV... anything with "Housewives" in the title.

brian burke

i hope you see ROAD WARRIOR, also called MAD MAX 2 in some nations, its the best in the series i think.

Spacedone

George: "I wonder if someone will explain why everyone in the world has gone crazy?" 2025 has entered the chat.

Mike FromOz

Settling in with some nice Aussie lamb, a few cold drinks, and ready for this great show! Looking forward to it!

Spacedone

I saw it more as 2025 being interested in the answer to this question too.

Patrick Evans

The final scene is an inspiration for Saw

Superpotroast

I feel like more people went crazy in 2020..But we had some good reason for that, mostly..

Superpotroast

Mad Max definitely feels like an old movie but Road Warrior is timeless..

Grandalf

The next one, THE ROAD WARRIOR, is my favorite out of the original 3. This was a great reminder of how great a storyteller Miller is, especially with a limited budget. Then Fury Road which you've seen of course, I just had to mention it because I think it might be the best pure action movie ever. Finally, I'm really looking forward to FURIOSA. I know it got kind of mid reaction on release, but I thought it was great!

REDR58

The Nightrider, that is his name. Remember him when you look at the night sky.

Mike FromOz

"And that's why your Dad's name in high school was Cundalini". Never stop being you, George, lol! When thinking about the Mad Max movies, don't think about them all being an exact continuity from one film to another. Instead, think about it as folklore being re-told about Max by different people in different places. George Miller directed "Happy Feet", which was the animated movie about Penguins. He also directed "Babe" and "Babe: Pig in the City", which is even funnier. Hugh Keays-Byrne was Immortan Joe as you said, but he and the Night Rider (Vincent Gil) were in a Australian cult classic movie about a bike gang called "Stone". He and Vincent were members of "The Undertakers", and it's a movie shot from their perspective. An interesting film, considering it had next to no budget, and is a real slice of Australian culture before we inevitably got swamped by the Americanisation of all things. Also has the most realistic ending for a biker movie ever. The Black V8 Interceptor (The Last of the V8's) is an iconic and recogniseable part of the Mad Max franchise, almost a character unto itself. It was made on the body of an Australian Ford XB GT Coupe muscle car, and it's resulting legacy in film has made it an incredibly desirable car to buy, often being made into V8 Interceptors, which also makes them extremely expensive to get a hold of, and as rare as hen's teeth. Thanks for checking out this iconic Aussie movie! Not all of our cinema is like this, but much like the USA, we've got a definite car culture over here. We have a very different film making culture over here, and a lot of great films to check out if you're interested. One of the best ever was directed by Canadian director Ted Kotcheff, called "Wake in Fright", who also directed "Rambo: First Blood". It's a tough watch though, and delves deeply into the heart of the Australian psyche, and sees all the bad in there for what it is.

Theo Bracco

The TV show was Knight Rider, because it was made by Knight Enterprises, and went around doing good deeds. But it was much later on, mid-Eighties.

Mad Max films ranked: The Road Warrior Furiosa Fury Road Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome But they are all pretty enjoyable.

Odd Thomas

As good as this is, Mad Max 2 is even better.

Alexrandom

Something to keep in mind in terms of continuity is every movie is kind of its own take on the world and the characters. Every mad max tackles different themes and often are directly linked to the time they came out. For example, without spoiling anything, furiosa starts by re-explaining a slightly different universe by focusing on fake news, and other modern problems that weren't a thing in fury road or older episodes. What I'm trying to say is expect each of them to be slightly different but they are all extremely enjoyable. A bit like every episode is the same story but it's become a myth and is told differently because details were lost to time. To me fury road is the masterpiece followed by furiosa. Miller really refined his art and became a master. One of the best directors alive to me.

Odd Thomas

Yeah reality TV peaked early 00s. Big Brother was great at first because it was normal people, then it became a parody of itself with scripted events, celebrity specials and contestants who were wannabe models etc and the 'reality' part got lost. There's a great Tim Robinson sketch about a dating show involving a zip line which is hysterical & I always think of when someone mentions dating shows.

Max Krause

About the reality TV question: I never watched that crap, but 8 years ago a German satire show snuck two actors into a show called "Schwiegertochter gesucht" - "Wanted: Daughter-in-law" and exposed the practises in the industry. The actors posed as father and son and were the most popular candidates, the blowout was huge. There's too much to write it all down here, but just a few points: The producers chose candidates that were borderline mentally handicapped. They told them what to say to paint them as complete weirdos. They payed them an absolute pittance, like 5€ per day. The actors didn't have ID (because that would've exposed them and faking ID is a felony) but were able to sign the contract anyway. It was basically a modern freakshow. If you're interested you can look up "Verafake" on Youtube, the video has English subtitles.

On the front fender of Max’s car is written “Max Rockatansky” and “The Dark One” The figure on the poster looks more like Goose than Max, same helmet etc. For the stunt, the Knight Rider’s car was propelled by a rocket just before it crashed and you can just see the exhaust for a moment or two. The long white car in the garage you thought looked like a plane is the 1973 Project 500 Jet Car: https://www.reddit.com/r/WeirdWheels/s/GebsvAdm6T In every scene with the Toe Cutter speaking the actor uses a different accent. MFP is Main Force Patrol. While Goose was in the nightclub Johnny the Boy sabotaged the bike. You can see him in the dark in the parking lot and hear grinding sounds. May is wearing leg braces, possibly due to polio or something like it. She calls “The Dark One” who was once Max’s patrol partner (his name is on Max’s car) but he is never seen in the movie. Jessie’s car was damaged when she drove through the fence. You can see a piece of wood jammed in the radiator. Jessie lost her right arm after surgery. I disagree about the movies not having a continuity. I think the Gibson movies are all self-consistent, but the Fury Road movie is “different,” change of actor aside. You should definitely watch The Road Warrior and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome as soon as possible!

djKENTO

once again I am coming to you to request ANDOR

djKENTO

Gordon doesn’t really yell at people much anymore. He’s got more “disappointed dad” energy lately and he rarely yelled at people on Kitchen Nightmares (the show where they try to help a restaurant). The yelling is usually reserved for Hell’s Kitchen which is where they have tow teams compete to figure out who will run a restaurant that Gordon is going to open. There are exceptions, but usually they’re justified. If he’s yelling on Kitchen Nightmares it’s because they’re gonna get some one killed with unsafe cooking prep.

REDR58

One last thing, when you watch The Road Warrior/Mad Max 2 I highly recommend you do so with subtitles on as there is a good bit of background dialogue from the main antagonist that is barely audible but adds an interesting bit of detail to the character.

Odd Thomas

George Romero made a film called Knight Riders. I think that was about cars and gangs too (I've not seen it)

Logan Kerlee

lmao, this came out before Akira! hahahaha, Moltres? xD I fucking love this movie, man. xD This movie's brutal for sure. hahahahaa, Meet the Fockers was a silly movie! It's similar to A Clockwork Orange, yeah but they don't show everything like that movie did. Yeah.. the scene with the biks and the mother is MEGA heartbreaking! Happy that you both liked the movie so much! The sequels for this are pretty meh in comparison It makes me happy that you both really enjoyed the movie! Kinda bums me out that ya'll watched the base American version of the movie. I TOTALLY would have loved to watch the Australian version with you two! It's all good though, that version doesn't have a ton of extra content - just a bit more of the ultraviolence that A Clockwork Orange had and a few more scenes as well. :) Very happy to have watched this with you both! :) Thanks for watching it!

Although there is never an exact explanation of what all happened to bring on the apocalypse, the clues in the movies indicate that even before the first movie “Mad Max” something happened to make the world start “drying” out, thus starting the downfall of society as water, food, oil etc begin to get scarce. Virus, sun activity, limited nukes…. Who knows. But as the movies keep going the world keeps getting dryer but not hotter. Max keeps getting madder (as in crazier).

JoeE

Almost nobody in the u.s. saw this when it came out, so the sequel was just called road warrior here, not mad max 2. Also, when it ran on tv (it was only in theaters about a week) they showed a version where Mel Gibson, unknown at the time, was voice dubbed

REDR58

I think nearly all the characters’ voices were over dubbed with American actors. It’s pretty crazy to watch the movie that way.

REDR58

The only difference between the original Australian Theatrical release and the American English dubbed original release in US were a few words (windscreen-windshield, etc). Otherwise the content is exactly the same. George and Simone did not comment on the accents so I imagine they’re watching the version original Australian audio. I don’t think any streaming services even carry the American English audio dub. As far as I know that was last release on DVD in the early 2000s. However, the original UK theatrical release version was slightly edited for content, but that was last on home video back when the movie was last released to VHS: https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=331227

REDR58

If you check out the MadMaxMovies.com website, there is exhaustive analysis and discussion the vehicles, shooting locations and just about every other aspect of the movies, at least so far up to Fury Road. With respect to “Rockatansky” and “The Dark One”: “All three of the yellow MFP cars have the drivers details painted on the front right of the vehicle, just in front of the driver's door. On Max's car you can find his name "M. Rockatansky", along with the name of his partner "The Dark One". About the only time you can easily see this is at the start of the film, just after Max gets in the car and pulls on his driving gloves. Even then you can't make it out too easily on video, it's best seen on the big screen, or in publicity photos like those below. Although the actual character of The Dark One was removed from the script before filming, a couple of references remain. Firstly there is the obvious reference on the car, but later on the film listen carefully at the farm house just after Jessie is chased back through the forest. Max can be heard to say "May, call The Dark One", who was in fact meant to be May Swaisey's husband. Unfortunately if you have the American dubbed version, this line was altered to "May, call Ziggy". What can I say, the dubbed version sucks.” https://www.madmaxmovies.com/mad-max/mad-max-cars/max-yellow-xb-interceptor-sedan/index.html

Ed R

the same actor who played Toe Cutter played Immortan Joe .

Prof. Writhms

I posted that until I saw the end of their reaction when George mentioned it in the trivia segment. 😁

Ed R

yeah I was typing this comment as they were reading the trivia.

Jesse Coombs

The worst reality show as far as morality goes? Probably "Kid Nation" or whatever Mr. Beast is doing.

Jesse Coombs

George Miller also did "Babe: Pig in the City" which is one of my favorite movies. I love it even more than the original.

Deadly Ramon

Your comment reminds me of a game from the mid-80s called The Last V8, for the Commodore 64. It also appears to have been influenced by the first 2 or 3 Mad Max films. "V8, return to base immediately!"

beecroft adams

Chopper would be a good australian film to watch.

SpankTheMonk

R.I.P. Hugh Keays-Byrne (1947 ‑ 2020) who played two of the most terrifying villains in the same film series 🫶 🥀

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Hell yeah, so happy to see you guys reacting to one of my all time favorite franchises. The OG Mad Max was not post apocalyptic but definitely dystopian, you can tell there had to have been some massive economic crisis and the beginnings of a major societal collapse. Even the way the chief keeps talking about people needing heroes, sounds like civilization is already teetering. Can't wait for the next two, some I hear don't like the third so much but I personally love it but I don't want to say exactly why, spoilers. And forget about how young Mel Gibson is, I'm just tripping on how young that Interceptor is, thing if beauty lol. I'm not the biggest car guy but that thing is badass.

Mike FromOz

Looks like the game was released in 1985, so it might have been after Thunderdome. From all information it was incredibly difficult to play, with some really harsh collision detection for the car. Interesting! Did not know about this game.

Drew

Adding, the franchise is considered “Loose Canon”, like the X-men films and Terminator, in that the chronology and connections from one movie to the next aren’t terribly important.

Alexrandom

Thanks ! That's what I was trying to say but my English is shit 😅 I understand it perfectly but finding the words can be tough

Bbb K

looking forward to the next 2 for very different reasons. You all know what I mean.

Opti_Frog

I can't wait for the reaction to Mad Max 2. Fury Road is my favourite in the series, but MM2 has what might be the best movie intro EVER. I mean, it's no wonder the very first Fallout game more or less just copied it.

pinkdino99

"Oh what a day, oh what a lovely day !" There was an awesome Games Workshop board game based on this called Dark Future. Well worth a look just for the lore and the the excellent illustrations (Carl Critchlow). I used to buy die cast cars and modify them with guns to play in the game.

AJ Lynch

As for the worst reality show question goes.. the answer would simply be, Susunu! Denpa Shonen. A Japanese reality show that locked a man naked in an apartment for a year with no food and he had to earn his food by using sweepstakes. Often times the food would be dog food and dried rice. His only entertainment was a stack of magazines with the sweepstakes in them, but that's not all. Not only was he expected to survive off of this, but also, he had cameras hidden all over his apartment that he had no clue about. So millions of people were watching him struggle and laugh and he had no idea. That's just pure evil.

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

IIRC there was a significant question of consent there, as well. Especially because after it got popular they didn't let him stop when he reached his initial goal. Instead they kind of kidnapped him to Korea to do a bonus round. That said, I think The Swan is competitive. Having a beauty contest featuring extreme plastic surgery with a face reveal like Gordon Ramsay was showing some owner their new restaurant was pretty awful.
