Well well well, look who's first.

Farbod

The show is even better. Hilarious.

Josip Buretić

Yes you need to watch the show it is much better

Jay Davis

I vant to vatch your mooovie!

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Going to raise hands with all the other Patrons saying definitely consider adding the TV adaptation to the future polls. It builds on this movie so well and is hilarious! Werewolves Not Swearwolves indeed haha

Wirenfeldt Jr

I am hoping and praying that you'll start wrapping up the series you've started.. Just off the top of my head we have: Bad Boys, Cars, Crank, Clerks, Mad Max, Toy Story, and i suppose, James Bond.. But that's a commitment and a half.. The rest are pretty managable, and i feel like wrapping them up before you end up with a year or more gap between chapters will end up being problematic, just from a memory perspective if nothing else..

Jacob King

In old comics/cartoons a log being sawed was a visual code for snoring. Sleeping like a log is deep sleep with heavy breathing. Sleeping like a baby is sleeping without guilt or anxiety. Pudding in the uk is different to American pudding, it’s a baked good. Proving in baking is allowing it to rise. The proof is in the pudding because you can look at the finished pudding to see if it was made correctly. I have no idea about the envelope.

Śéáń

Weirdly "pushing the envelope" is actually originally to do with an airplane. There were flight tests for a particular model decades ago where they wanted it to reach 10,000ft above sea level. The "envelope" of how far it could fly, i.e. the outer boundries of how high and how low it could operate, had to be "pushed outward", i.e. Improved beyond the current limitations. Pushing the envelope therefore came to mean moving something outside the normal boundaries

JoeE

I believe George Carlin had the same idea about leaving a shit

PeppermintWizardOfAus

You guys absolutely NEED to watch the show if you loved this one! It’s so so funny

D. T. Nelson

With the phrase "Pushing the envelope" it isn't referring to the paper container. The word envelope can also mean a covering structure or boundary (which it does in this case). So, pushing the envelope literally means pushing the boundaries. Also, the guy you thought looked like David Harbor is Jemaine Clement—your favorite villain from Men in Black 3.

Brandon

I can easily agree with everyone pushing for you guys to start watching the show asap. I'm not overhyping it when I say Matt Berry is one of the funniest people to have ever lived.

Grandalf

I knew I recognized Vladislav! He is a riot in DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS! That would be a great reaction.

kbobravo

Please do watch the show. So dang good.

Jacob King

Lost Boys is iconic. I’d also recommend the Gary Oldman Dracula, peak 90s goth.

megamoo chilli

Vladislav and the Alpha male werewolf are both in Flight of the Concords - That show with an actor you'll know as a random elf in The Lord of the Rings.

Chris Davies

Aha! I knew your 'mmm.. Steve' in an earlier video intro was from flight of the conchords

CT

The TV show isn't as good as the movie. I made it to the end, and while there are some bright spots, it's frustratingly mediocre overall.

Kyle Baker

The original phrase was "The Proof of the Pudding is the eating" So basically it was a "Don't judge a book by it's cover", but for food.

lordoflondon

hahah that second phrase also makes no sense because judging a book by its cover is literally what youre suppose to do. anythng beyond the cover is just "reading the book".

Philipp Roensch

Well my answers would be: 1) Babies sleep innocently/know no worries 2) Envelopes can be filled to bursting 3) dunno, must be British, pudding appears soft until it is not? 4) I need to give a shit thinking about this This is a great comedy, I fear the initial flop was because the budget look, certainly intended though. The series has been recommended a lot, would. Gary Oldman is in Bram Stoker's Dracula, that is the very classic one.

Jenny_M

I love the movie, but I love the show even more, it's so fantastic.

Monica Alarcon

Besides the What We Do In The Shadows TV show there's also another spinoff starring the two cops investigating paranormal stuff around Wellington. It's called Wellington Paranormal and in my opinion it's better than the other TV show.

Sergio Meira

Hmmm... Here are some possibilities. "Sleep like a baby." When babies fall asleep, they really do. They don't feel anxious and keep moving around in bed thinking about their jobs or whether the report for Q2 will be ready in time or not. They just close their eyes and sleep. So to me, it feels like sleeping is simple for a baby: their only problems are, like, hunger or thirst or physical pain... whereas we have so many neuroses all around that keep us from sleeping tight. "Sleep like a log." Yeah, of course a log doesn't sleep. And if you are in deep sleep, then you don't even move or make noises, you might as well be a log just lying there. So it's not that logs sleep, but that you look like a log when you sleep deeply. "Pushing the envelope". I didn't know, but Dr. Google tells me that this is not about postal envelopes. You see, to envelop something = to surround something with something else (much like an envelope does with a letter). In this particular case, the expression is from aeronautics, as there is something called a "flight envelope" that envelops your airplane while you fly, and if you push your motors really hard then you will be pushing the airplaine against the flight envelope and therefore pushing the envolpe further. (Apparently this expression was popularized by Tom Wolfe in his book 'The Right Stuff'.) "Take vs. give a shit." Well, clearly "I don't give a shit" is a metaphor in terms of trading: just like you might say "I wouldn't give (= pay) a dollar for this stupid contraption", you might disparage something or someone even further by saying its price is so low, even shit costs more. As for "taking a shit" not implying you leave the bathroom with something, consider other examples of "take" that also don't imply you get anything new, like "to take a shower", "to take a bath", "to take a loss" (which actually means you lose something), etc. I think "take" here is not meant as "obtaining something", but rather as "having a (strong) experience" (consider "to take a victory lap"). So when you "take a shit", the "shit" here is not the result but the act of shitting (as in when you take a bath: you don't "take the bath" with you, but you experience the good sensations of the act of bathing). So not all shit is shit, as it were; some shit is shitting rather than shit. I.e., some shit is process (which you can experience), while other shit is the actual product of your entrails. "To give a shit" refers to the latter (= fecal matter); "to take a shit", to the former (= experiencing the process of shitting"). Cool, eh?

I haven't been the biggest fan of the things that are being picked for a while but then something I love comes around and i'm always reminded why I subscribe. Keep taking my money, even if I only log in once every month.

Mike FromOz

Please watch the TV series. You can start it after Star Trek finishes. Will give you something fun and light to watch during the week, and I know we'd all be up for it! Also, if you want to watch a vampire movie where they aren't rich, and their lives kind of suck, but it's a serious film, watch "Near Dark". It's an absolute classic.

Sumner Hayes

A) The original phrase is “the proof of the pudding is in the eating”, dating back to the 14th century. The sense of “proof” here is “test” (an older meaning), so the expression basically means “the best way to test something is to use it for what it was intended”. B) As noted in a bunch of other answers, the envelope in “pushing the envelope” is not a postal envelope. Envelope more generally means an outer container or limit for something. This particular phrase comes from the aeronautics industry: one meaning of envelope according to Webster's is “: a set of performance limits (as of an aircraft) that may not be safely exceeded”, so a test pilot's job was to “push the envelope”: go right up to the designated safe limits to make sure that they were, indeed, safe.

droodly

@lordoflondon, Do you not judge books you've read? You enjoyed it or you didn't? It's just saying a books cover isn't the entirety of the whole experience.

lordoflondon

what? the phrase dont judge a book by its cover means to not judge something by its appearance. except that is also literally how we judge a book initially, by its cover. if youre at a book store looking for a spy thriller, and you see a book with a cover showing a wizard fighting a dragon, youve made the decision and judgement that this isnt the right book for you, entirely based on just the cover/appearance.

Sam

I have always assumed it's "sleep like a baby" because babies are innocent and have no responsibilities. So they sleep peacefully with a clear conscience and nothing to worry about. So, it's not about the duration of the sleep, but rather the quality. As we get older and take on responsibilities and regrets, etc., it becomes more difficult to get good quality sleep. So, beware of those saying they sleep like babies, they might be psychopathic.

Tenn Seven

The show is just as good as the movie, in my opinion. Plus, it has Matt Berry and he is always hilarious.

Sergio Meira

Looks like you missed the final post-credits scene (at the very end, right before the end of the video). Have a look, you'll like it!

Dominique Cloet

Here’s a couple of suggestions - Toys (with Robin Williams) - Small Soldiers - Bowfinger 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Bartos Marcell

The show might be even better so deffinitely watch it here

Odd Thomas

Lake Mungo is my favourite faux documentary. It's very creepy; more so than Blair Witch imo. Another good one is Hell House LLC (there's like 5 of them).

W T

You gotta watch the HBO Flight of the Conchords special to get a good introduction to New Zealand's third-best guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo. You have seen Bret McKenzie many times as Figwit ("Frodo (Don't Wear the Ring)" is a parody of theirs) in LotR, and now Jermaine Clement once again, previously as Tamatoa the crab in Moana. The show is worth it too for a quick off-kilter ride, but the special is a great summary of their style and just in general a good performance.

W T

I was boggling my brain about who the fuck David Harbor is supposed to be

Odd Thomas

Vladislav is Jemaine Clement, who you saw as the villain in Men in Black 3. Maybe after Severence you could start the WWDITS TV show, then I'll finally have a compelling reason to watch it too!

REDR58

Here’s a few more idioms for you George: “Dead as Caesar” “Dead as a doornail” “Safe as houses.” “Beat around the bush.” “A penny for your thoughts.”

djKENTO

yall definitely need to see Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

djKENTO

anyone else having issues with sync?

droodly

And the phrase is telling you not to do what you described. You kinda just spelled out why the phrase makes total sense, but doubled down? Weird take, but okay. You do you. Have a good one.

Max Krause

You've seen/heard Jemaine Clement several times now and I think you realised that he's half of Flight of the Concords. However, you've also seen FotC's other half, Bret McKenzie before. He's the elf in LotR RotK that tells Arwen "Lady Arwen, we cannot delay" when she has the vision of her son. He also played Lindir, the elf who welcomes Thorin's company to Rivendell in the first Hobbit movie. Also Rhys Darby, the Alpha Werewolf, played FotC's manager in their TV series. I'm not saying that you should react to Flight of the Concords, but I do think that you owe it to yourselves to check out their songs on Youtube in your own time. If you don't, you're just denying yourselves a lot of fun!

Opti_Frog

Absolutely one of my favourite comedies of all time. The dry, deadpan mockumentary style is right up my alley, and flatting vampires is a concept for the ages. Which is why it saddens me that i i can't get into the TV show. I've tried twice and haven't gotten past the first episode.

Ciarra Jade

Off topic .. but The pre show is some quality content I live for 😂😂

Amar

Forgot how funny this movie was, Taika Waititi was exceptional!!

Jesse Coombs

Definitely watch "Lost Boys". It's like Interview with a Vampire mixed with The Goonies.

FranciscoGios

I’m so excited to watch this for the first time as well with you guys!! Let’s go!!

DM DC

You have to go back and watch the post credit scene.

Chris Truex

I had to slow my copy down a little bit, and had to resync occasionally. Usually I don't have an issue. Pretty manageable at .96x

REDR58

Fun reaction, first time watch for me! You two really need to watch The Lost Boys and Bram Stoker’s Dracula now!

SpankTheMonk

Yesss! And finally another film I actually own! 😍

Simone's Coconut Squire

Pushing the envelope I believe comes from aviation. The "performance envelope" has to do with how high/fast/etc a craft can perform, so pushing, or challenging those limits is extremely risky.

TheSentry77

I'm not very well versed in audio software, so I dunno if whatever noise suppressor you guys are using is absolutely necessary, but I think it's a damn shame that any time you guys start laughing out loud your audio cuts out, because I find you both have incredibly infectious laughters, escpecially Simone. Would love to hear it in its full glory 😁

Gary Fixler

Man, the number times people have said "if X, you might be a sociopath" and it applies to me...

Gary Fixler

Yeah, I was going to bring up the cartoon log sawing thing, but it was also a common phrase in the old days, to say "He was sawing logs," to mean "He was sound sleep." I've actually had people in my life, way back in the 80s, use the phrase "sawing logs" about themselves, or someone else sleeping.

Scribbles_the_mouse

They have and original 2005 version of this that they shot on their own and the actor who played Deacon had an awful flu. Most his scenes he is laying on the couch. They play it off but once you know, you can see it. It used to be on YouTube

WalrusWallace

So glad you guys enjoyed this movie! It's one of my favorites. And yes please consider watching the tv show. It's a great time. Also would like to recommend "Hunt for the Wilderpeople". It's also directed by Taika Waititi and it is such a heartwarming and hilarious movie

Tay Schumaker

Leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet

Justin Leone

The "envelope" in "pushing the envelope" refers to a flight envelope, which is the range of capabilities for an aircraft.

Justin Leone

::George gives a shit:: Toilet: "Oh, that's right, Chandler... I mean George. Put it in me!" Toilet: "Oh George, you're sooooo big" Toilet: "Oh yeah.... I want it all. mmmmmmmm"

Odd Thomas

I tried my old DVD and had this issue but switched to a free streaming trial on Amazon and was fine.

Odd Thomas

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is another good Taika Watiti film

Gary Fixler

Simone and George would love Flight of the Conchords.

Ste Rawlings

The saying "the proof is in the pudding" is actually a misquote. The original saying was "the proof of the pudding is in the eating" which means that the value of something is best judged by experience or testing, not just by what is said or promised. The phrase is from the 17th century, referring to the fact that a pudding's quality could only be truly known after tasting it. Also "pudding" in the UK which is where the saying originated refers to all desserts.

DinChild

The TV show is more of the same, and in so many ways, even better. It's all sooooo good.

Shibby

This is such a great movie I'm glad you guys like it. Makes me miss going to Boogie Wonderland though.

ScottishSammo

Absolutely loved this reaction and what a hilarious movie, can't wait for you to watch the TV show. All the best

sarCC

Soooo happy you two loved this. Hoping you'll drop Sevrance for this BUT, as much as I really like the WWDITS TV series, I think Wellington Paranormal is my favorite spinoff of all-time. Please don't sleep on it. It's way more consistently brilliant.

sarCC

While I absolutely LOVE Kristen Schaal in everything else she's been in, I was really surprised that when her character was introduced, the show's quality plummeted enormously. Really shocking.

Donna Castellano

This isn't an opinion I come across often and I agree. I honestly watched the entire series for Nadja and Lazlo. It often loses that mockumentary style and comes off like a regular TV series. The cameos are fun tho.

Marylou inProgress

Oh my god the bidding on a table was so funny 😂 Idk how but it's so much funnier to be bidding on something boring and mundane that doesn't even have to do with anything else in the story. I feel like a lesser writer would've tried to make it some wacky item but nope. Just a random table xDD

Cory Garron

I have seen the TV show, but not the movie. Here we go
