The Clavell Novel Shogun is based on the conclusion of the Sengoku period in Japan which was something insane like 100+ years of civil wars and petty conflicts. I never finished the book but the old TV mini-series always seemed more to focus on the romance side whereas this adaptation leans more on the political machinations of Torunaga. Torunaga is based Ieyasu Tokugawa who ended that period of civil war and brought on like 200+ years of stability. I wouldn't call it peaceful since I am pretty sure a lot of people still died for the Tokugawa Shogunate to maintain stability. In this way it sort of reminds of what little I know of Augustus Caesar, who had like a solid 70y run of "peace" for Rome after Julies Caesar. I'm pretty sure the end of the Shogunate led directly into the Meiji Restoration which was the abolishment of the Samurai caste. I'm sure some of that was just pragmatism but it also it feels like people where tired of the feudal system when the western world was flaunting their entry into the modern era. I am very happy to get more from this series even though I don't think there was a follow up novel. Anna Sawai (Mariko) and Tadanobu Asano (Yabushige) deserve every award they got. As much as the show depending on every member of the cast, it wouldn't have been the same with out their specific performances. While watching part one of the reaction I was wonder how long before y'all would fall in love with Yabushige. He is so fun to watch. A season 2 without Mariko or Yabushige is a hard sell. I just hope they leave Fuji alone, let her be a nun and stay out of all this madness.

Ishido’s plan was to capture Mariko and sideline her to prevent her martyrdom and prevent hostages leaving. Mariko dying blew up his plan - which she did willingly.

Who put Rob Schneider on the cover?! ;)

Thanks for reacting to this! It's such a gorgeous show. (Even if -- SO. MUCH. SEPPUKU. AGHGH!) But Toranaga is an amazing and complex character, so fantastically acted (of course). And Hiroyuki Sanada's performance is just incredible -- he's so charismatic and expressive yet manages to keep his emotions so controlled. That final scene between Toranaga and Ishido was fantastic (and kudos to Takehiro Hira for his performance -- he was so much fun!). As far as Toranaga, I'm not sure I see him as villainous, so much as willing to do whatever it takes to achieve peace. The sacrifice of the few to save the many, etc. Yes, he's ruthless, but look at what he accomplishes as Shogun: History tells us that he achieved peace for centuries and utterly changed Japan (and in some ways) the world. While I'm sure plenty of awful stuff continued to happen under his rule, it was absolutely far better than the feudal infighting and constant battle of the previous century. Meanwhile, this was such a beautifully done show, and a fantastic finale. So heartbreaking to see Mariko sacrifice herself, but I understood it, and I agree with Simone that she was in so much pain, I was almost happy for her (ALMOST). And Anna Sawai was so good as Mariko, as is Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne. I've never seen him before but he has such a tough job -- conveying so much simplicity and complexity at the same time -- and I thought he was terrific. (I also do love the original Shogun adaptation, which I think truly attempted to respect Japanese culture and characters to a remarkable degree for the times -- but it was interesting that Richard Chamberlain was a more "noble," elegant Blackthorne whereas this Blackthorne is a bumbling buffoon at times, but it is a starker contrast to the environment in which he finds himself.) Meanwhile, I love the way we finally understand Toronaga's ruthlessness as well as his vision, and that Blackthorne gets some kind of closure. I adore that we know his vision was a dream because he let himself drop the crucifix into the water. I love the sense that the battle ends -- Toranaga is Shogun -- but another quiet battle begins, as John now understands that he will have to fight even harder to leave.
