Please watch the last two episodes in reverse order - your memories of this experience will be much improved.

scott melton

You have under 1000 subscribers to go until 200K. Will Simone relax on her 'Subscribe' messaging when that happens?

Michael Bauer

Can't wait to watch this later. "The Cloud Minders" is my favorite underrated Trek episode - and surprisingly deep/layered in its allegory on exploitation and how the conditions it forces upon people can tragically make them sometimes less willing and able to embrace change for the better.

robodong

why would she? its clearly working since it got them to 200k. "i got enough customers, lets not grow the business anymore by doing something that takes literally 5 seconds at no cost." - said no one ever.

Cartoons ReAct

I think these episodes were recorded last week, so they already film the last ones

Happy Hanukkah

Whereas I don't mind if it's cloudy.

Actuarial Lurker

Cloud Minders is one of the better TOS episodes while Savage Curtain is one of the worst- with people yelling Help Me Spock or Help Me Kirk as part of college drinking games. This is very funny- but Roddenberry wrote this himself and did NOT intend it to be a joke...People believe the red outfit from that episode was recycled for Robin William's Mark from Ork costume for Happy Days and the spin off

Michael M.

I love it when she does it.

Paul McBryde

Mongomery "Scotty" Scott is a Scottish person from Scotland who is a Scot, whose nickname is Scotty and he has a Scottish accent, who also drinks Scotch.

Actuarial Lurker

Cloud Minders is what PROBABLY would have happened if you tried to implement Plato's Republic so a very prescient quip by Simone- gentrified effete philosophers who can't work and repressed workers who are prevented from thinking- not only Marxist but also similar to H.G.Well's The Time Machine from the 1890s with the Eloi and Morlocks

Mitch M

Did you guys hear about Val Kilmer? It's so sad. If you decide to do a poll/watch one of his movies in remembrance, I hope you'll consider Thunderheart. Nobody reacts to it and I actually think it's one of his best performances. It's a great thriller set on a reservation.

Mike FromOz

I've not seen much of the original series, so Cloud Minders was great. I had pretty much the same reaction when Spacebraham Lincoln showed up as you both did 😂

Actuarial Lurker

You can see her navel- shocking!- seriously though, censors didn't want Barbara Eden to show her bare navel on I dream of Jeannie yet TOS has Droxine break that taboo

Actuarial Lurker

Actor Jeff Corey who played the leader of the cloud city was one of the actors on the 1950s McCarthy driven Hollywood blacklist

Christiano

Can't wait for TNG :X

Thall

I really hope you watch all the older Star Trek! I am very much looking forward to DS9

D. T. Nelson

When you started talking about the title of episode 322—The Savage Curtain—my immediate thought was Dr. Strange's cape goes feral. Sadly, the episode was so much worse.

Kurt Hockenbury

That's why when Roddenberry made "Genesis II" he made it a plot point that one group could be ID'd by their double navels, which meant he could show navels without the censors getting in his way.

REDR58

I’d also recommend”Willow” (1988) for some goofy fantasy fun and “The Doors” (1991) which is definitely not goofy fantasy fun.

Mark Barger

This has been said more than once and I don’t understand. As someone who watched TOS in its original run, I love Turnabout Intruder. Rarely has the Shat chewed the scenery as much as in this episode. It’s a Shatner tour de force and will go down as one of the greatest examples of Shatner hamming it up as JTK. Classic!

Badger

We are getting through it! I have watched ALL Star Trek-over 900 episodes and It's great to go back and watch again, now that I am older and life stuff, it is always a different experience. I am looking forward to your movie reactions! I feel like I am watching this with friends.. Thank you George-Your title guesses are uncanny.."maybe it's a city in the clouds".. Impressive.. If you could shoot me over some winning lottery numbers or your secrets to attracting women- feel free...

SpankTheMonk

Star Trek Day keeps sad feelings away! 🖖

Actuarial Lurker

DS9 is so much better than TNG, but unfortunately you need TNG for context....glad they are doing the Animated Series next- haven't seen that since I was 8 years old back in 1974 when it first aired

Actuarial Lurker

Im in my late 50s and in the 80s when I was in college TNG had not aired yet so we would watch TOS reruns as drinking games. This horrible episode was great for a laugh but not as serious entertainment

Actuarial Lurker

If a woman were to have posted that I would say, Aye Lassie...the actor James Doohan was a straight G...he was part of the D-Day invasion and was shot multiple times in the landing and survived...so if he gained a few pounds as the series was wrapping up so what!

Mycenaeus

There is this great movie, "The Conqueror" (1956), that you should absolutely watch.

Bandaloop

All Engineers are Scots and all Scots are Engineers.

Jeb Manning

The next Star Trek thing is the animated series. Can't wait for your reactions.

Jeb Manning

Also I was waiting for so long for you guys to get Space Lincoln. One of my favorite things in Star Trek.

SpankTheMonk

Awesome! Thanks for confirming the order of your near future Star Trek adventures! Woohoo!🙌

Simon Pegged Me

I'd nominate Real Genius (1985) and The Ghost and the Darkness (1996).

From other comments, this might not be a popular opinion, but The Animated Series can be skipped. Animation allows the Star Trek universe to expand, to show more alien races than could have been shown convincingly with practical effects, but it offers little more than that. Outside of one episode about Spock's childhood, the series doesn't provide any real lore or anything necessary to the Star Trek universe that follows. Others disagree. Each week, CBers, who I've come to respect from their comments, express excitement over seeing you respond to The Animated Series. I'd hate to disappoint them. I was just trying to shave a little time off your 5-year mission to react to Star Trek and all of its franchises. A Star Trek, Cinebinge, and CB community fan, I'll be happy to watch along, whatever you decide.

Kurt Hockenbury

About the women's costumes, they were designed by William Ware Theiss (Bill Theiss). To quote wikipedia: In the course of his career, Theiss was most famous for creating alluring female costuming that censors typically could not credibly forbid, employing what came to be called the "Theiss Titillation Theory": "The sexiness of an outfit is directly proportional to the perceived possibility that a vital piece of it might fall off."

SpankTheMonk

Stress eating at Cafe Services at Paramount HQ caused by knowing during the season it will most likely be the last. No need to stay fit. And I believe television back in that time pay and residuals were much less. William Shatner mentioned how money and opportunities were hard after. Star Trek listened to you both about securing the guard after knocking them out. George will understand the uniform “tug” soon 😃.

SpankTheMonk

I respect your opinion and you 🫶, but as you say I am one that feels (as captains Simone and George) it’s worth watching, plus as 20 minute episodes they will go through rather fast.

gfixler

I require the clouds. I hate sunlight.

> unfortunately you need TNG Nothing about this sentiment makes sense to me. I grew up with, and love both, for completely different reasons. TNG has far more variety in stories, so you get to explore far more classical style sci-fi ideas. There's a lot of character-style exploration, like what's it like to be an android, or to have to wear a visor, or to be the only one of a certain race. It's also a ship, so you get the excitement of flying all over the galaxy, visiting different worlds, like TOS. There are excellent episodes, like Drumhead, and The Inner Light. DS9 is far more about very long, multiseason story arcs, deep dives into politics and religion, a lived-in world full of grittiness (because Gene, who hated grittiness, and humans acting badly, had died, freeing everyone up to explore the dark side of things). It's a lot less story-of-the-week, and a lot more long walks on the promenade, discussing policy, and being annoyed with each other. It's far more about character motivations and scheming, and old rivalries. It's great, but I've always just flat-out enjoyed TNG a lot more. DS9 is dark and heavy. The station is literally dark and heavy. TNG is light, fun, and adventurous. The joke back in the day was that TNG boldly goes, and DSN boldly stays, because it's a space station. But it also makes no sense to say unfortunately we have to watch the one first, unless you're dying, and have only so long to live (if so, omg, I apologize for arguing my point, and wish you all the best). We'll get to all of it, and everyone will get their favorites. If we just rush through all of our own personal favorites, we'll burn through everything we love, and have nothing cool to look forward to after that. TNG has a massive fan base. An absolute ton of us loved it, and it's really our trek, even though I was older and wiser by the time I watched DS9, and was in a prime position for it to be my favorite. TNG has characters I just love. Just as I never gained any love for anyone on the Expanse (despite Avasarala being a great character, played by an amazing actress), but loved everyone on Firefly, I never really loved anyone on DS9 (okay, Jadzia, how can you not?), but I love Picard, and Geordie, and Data, and Beverly, and Guinan... TNG makes me happy. It's fun. DS9 is quality, and even maybe better story writing, especially in the long story arcs format, but it's oppressive. A lot of times I don't really want to be in that dark world, predicated on a horrible occupation. I just want to go have an adventure with my buds.

Spock said "Here on Stratos, everything is incomparably beautiful and pleasant: the high advisor's charming daughter, Droxine, particularly so. The name Droxine seems appropriate for her." I had to look that up. From a comment on scifi.stackexchange: > en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydroxyzine was sold under the brand Droxyne (pronounced the same way as Droxine) until the 1970s. It causes drowsiness and has "hallucinogenic and hypnotic" propoerties

Alan Kobb

Regarding Simone's mention of Da Vinci in ST:Voyager, one of the reasons why she probably liked him so much is that he was played by a wonderful character actor who she has loved in other roles, such as Gimli and Treebeard in Lord of the Rings and Sallah in Indiana Jones

Happy Hanukkah

And whether she has seen him or not, let us not forget Professor Maximillian Arturo.

SpankTheMonk

I believe minutes would refer to positioning when navigating earth’s surface nautically (older) vs in space they would use coordinates and degrees, like a mark indicates the vertical angle or elevation of a course. Simone’s joy with the references is awesome. I like to think it looks like a failed chocolate chip and fudge brownie cake. I believe when Surak was around the emotionless rations Vulcan society wasn’t common. I am giving some flex to the rock monster creations as being more myth. Since Kahless being a mockingbird. The Savage Curtain doesn’t seem like an Emmy contender. Pretty sure future Star Trek characters from history are done well and I think better conceived in the stories. No spoilers but some actual famous people of merit who are alive during TNG show up. So much fun!

Patrick - Excelsior

As others have mentioned, the Vulcan way of absolute logic and emotional control was instituted by Surak. Before him, Vulcans were highly emotion warlords that fought constantly and almost died out as a result. Surak's philosophy spread like a religion and saved the Vulcans from self destruction. He was literally the Jesus figure of Vulcan. The Excalbian, lava monsters, were meant to be a polar opposite to the Organians. While the Organians abhorred violence, the Excalbian used it to study species and encouraged it amongst the races in order to learn about them. This episode suffered from the Season 3 budget restraints, where to plot had to be modified to fit the tiny budget allowed. The phaser were taken away to save on the special effects of using them. All the costumes were reused from other episodes except Lincoln's and the creation of the Lava monster.

A "thong" used to be a much more common expression for a strip of leather that was used to bind or (I think) even whip others.
