I wish Tina Turner wasn´t on the poster nor her name, it would´ve been a nice surprise for everybody. And the tag phrase on the poster gives too much away. These are the moments I wish G&S wouldn´t look at posters, but I understand why they do it and I like it most of the time.

robodong

yaa true, though i have a feeling S&G would not have recognized her till the end credits if it were the case lol.

“Who run Barter Town?” Yas! My sister and I used to quote this movie all the time growing up. This is a total nostalgia watch for me.

I think I still have the movie book for this film. Anyone remember those? Where you'd go to the movies, and there would be a companion A4 sized book with a bunch of still photos from the move to go along with it if you wanted it? I have the one for this, Ghostbusters, and Dune I think. I kind of miss that stuff.

howtocookazombie (Stan)

One of my favorite movies! But holy cow. This must be probably the biggest poster text spoiler I've ever seen. It basically spoiled the ENTIRE movie. 😅

JediLounger

You guys have discussed the extensive influence that these movies had on various media since you started watching them. If you want to see the movie that was effectively a remake of Road Warrior and Thunderdome in everything but the name then you should check out Waterworld (1995).

I'm thinking that the guy who wouldn't die in this was the inspiration for the orc from Return of the King who wears a skull on his head.

The pilot in this movie and the gyro captain in the last one are meant to be two entirely different characters, even though they're both pilots and both played by the same actor. As the gyro captain said at the end of The Road Warrior, he and the rest of the tribe never saw Max again. This movie is also one of my favorite references in Rick & Morty. "Hey, you guys ever use that Thunderdome, or did you just put it up for decoration?" "Uh, you mean the Blood Dome?" "Save it for the Semantics Dome, E.B. White."

Recommendation time: Hook (1991). Steven Spielberg / Robin Williams. Grossly overlooked/underrated. The whole section with the lost children reminded me of this. You should add it to a poll sometime. Fantasy poll.

Thunderdome: 1:46:58 Same amount of sleep George slept that night…

I love that Miller listened to audiences who said they'd wanted more crazy car stunts from a Mad Max film and he spent 20 years planning a sequel that was ALL crazy car stunts, lol

Jay Davis

Seeing this as a kid when it came out, I wasn't as critical of the tone shift then. But I recall still thinking it wasn't as good as the second. But, for '85, it was still pretty freakin' good.

There is some speculation online that Jedediah (Spence) helps out Max a bit by shouting “Two Men Enterc One Man Leaves!” after the fight because he recognized him inside Bartertown earlier, but that doesn’t really track for me because they never have any conversation afterward, even briefly, about the events of the last movie. It’s definitely a different character. Jedidiah’s teeth are intact and clean in this movie, unlike the last one, and his personality is different. Yes, they are both pilots, and some people think his child is the result of being with the younger blonde woman he meets in The Road Warrior, but the events of The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome are about 15/20 years apart with the nuclear was occurring in between. Edit: and of course Spence plays “The Gyrocaptain” in Road Warrior and here he is “Jedidiah the Pilot.”

Tot story 3 please

The theory I always had about Mad Max is that thet are four different people, that amalgamated into one person through the retelling of legends. Every time some tribe or village encounters a "Mysterious Wanderer" that saves the day, he BECOMES Max in the retelling. Eventually creating a mythical hero called The Road Warrior. It's the sort of thing that happens all the time in mythical fiction Robin Hood, King Arthur, Heracles, and Wong Fei-hung for example. All heroes that began as separate legends about multiple people that eventually became one epic figure.

This is apparently a good timeline visualization, spoilers for Furiosa though!! please watch it first, I bet you will enjoy it. https://www.reddit.com/r/MadMax/comments/1d3p79d/the_picture_of_a_mad_max_timeline_that_i_created/ I would wager Fallout 1 was already more inspired than what Bethesda did with it, but all the games have good references. I think now 2 is the best of the classics, but certainly Goerge has always had a vision and was able to shift the tone a bit here and there.

Another fun trivia the closing credits song was a huge hit, making it to #2 on the charts.

SpankTheMonk

I am loving this. I know you have a stacked deck for your watch weeks. But I appreciate your privilege of having the opportunity to see sequels sooner and doing so for us, compared to those who had to wait when the films originally came out. I think that is one of the fun things about Patreon/YouTube watch-al-longs. Danke!

Benedict Thunderdome.

This is my favorite of the original trilogy. I know part 2 is a better film but I must have seen this one sooo many times on TV as a kid that there's a nostalgia factor to it. It was great rewatching with you...

REDR58

I’m almost 100% certain I saw Thunderdome first (it was on TV a lot in the US in the late 1980s), then Mad Max 2, then Mad Max! I think Thunderdome is still my favorite as well but I do also feel Mad Max 2 is the best. I enjoy the whole Gibson trilogy more than Fury Road, but I do like Fury Road as well.

REDR58

I disagree to a point. The Gibson trilogy movies don’t really contradict any details with each other (other than Spence playing 2 different characters, which annoys me but I can live with it). Gibson’s Max’s story is self-consistent, such as it is, and elements of his outfit move with him between the 3 movies. Fury Road to me (and Furiosa) is its own continuity and that is just fine.

djKENTO

I said it last time but yeah the pilot is the same actor, different character.

Jesus F Christ

Bruce Spence - playing both Jedediah and the Gyro Pilot - is also the Mouth of Sauron. Which, now that I think about it, someone must have told you already, right?

FranciscoGios

According to George Miller he never wrote Mad Max as being old, so on to the last minutes of the movie when Max was caught by Aunty she was supposed to kill him. As you guys said the tone of the movie was changed and made Miller not to kill off Max because it was too dark 🤦‍♂️. On Fury Road he went back to write Max as being an old man, but Covid happened and Mel Gibson was already too old so the script was changed and was given to Tom Hardy.

Why would you wan't to go to live in a crack in the earth? Just because it has a little pond and some foliage—not to mention only children live there? I'd rather live in Bartertown, at least you've got shit to do other than babysitting and staring into space trying to remember what having fun felt like.

simon brouillard

For what it’s worth, trying to find the meaning to everything is kind of pointless. And I mean that for pretty much any movie from the past. I feel like to many people suffer from this 😉 . The damn mcu/recent star wars where you’ll find out about the dice or the reason behind the color of the characters third favorite pair of socks🤣. The first 2 mad max are basically the babies of Byron Kenedy and George Miller. They made them together, produced it was pretty much happenstance that George was the director, hence Kennedy Miller, Byron Kennedy past away in 1983

REDR58

In the beginning of the movie when Max enters Bartertown you can see several banners being carried by townspeople: "Auntie Says Imperial Guard Rule O.K." "Auntie Says Pigs = Power" "Aunty Wrote The Law" All of the Imperial Guards in Bartertown have chromed car parts on their armor, turn signal housings, rear view mirrors, hood ornaments, etc. They use hubcaps as bucklers. Likewise, many of the kids in the Oasis are wearing parts from the airplane wreck as jewelry or using seat belts and buckles as belts. Some of the kids are also sitting on seats taken from the airplane. The Oasis is also called "The Crack in the Earth" and you can see a "crack" with people going down into it drawn in the mural. I think it's implied that the mural drawings of Max and the Monkey are new and drawn after Max arrived. The artwork appears fresh and not faded like the other murals about the Pox-eclipse. Scrooloose's facial markings appear to be inspired by his Bugs Bunny toy. He loses the face paint after they colonize the city. I think the similarity to later Fury Road Warboys' facepaint is just coincidental or perhaps a callback. The kids were shocked when Max fired the rifle. Slake was using the rifle as a spear-type weapon and the bullets were being used as windchimes. They had no idea the bullets went into the gun. The test of strength between Ironbar and the other guy in Underworld involved pulling your hand down so the other's guy's hand was pulled into the spikes set up above them. You can see Ironbar struggling to free himself while shooting when the Oasis kids show up and he cuts his hand before the other guy unlocks him (and then unlocks himself). Ironbar's real name is "Angry Anderson" and he is the lead singer of a band called Rose Tattoo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angry_Anderson The aircraft is real and is a "Transavia PL-12 Airtruk" built in Australia. It is an agricultural aircraft used for crop-dusting, etc. Some variants can carry up to six people: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transavia_PL-12_Airtruk https://www.planeandpilotmag.com/this-incredible-plane-transavia-pl-12-airtruk/ Anyway, the tonal changes don't bother me too much. It's really too bad they didn't simply make Bruce Spence play the same character as in Mad Max 2 for all the confusion it brings. I thought the same thing for years but finally accepted he is playing a different character. But it is what it is.

REDR58

The thing is, nothing in the 3 Gibson Mad Max movies contradict each successive film with the exception of Spence playing two different pilots that meet Max. His appearance and personality in the two films are quite different. The first two movies are about 3 years apart and the third is set roughly 10-15 years after the second. At some point between the 2nd and third movie some unknown number of nuclear weapons were launched and hit Australia. Max tells Auntie Entity that he was a cop and a driver, bits and pieces of his costume and appearance and injuries and weapons from one movie move into the next. What I want know is what the heck happened to all the water at Sydney! I suppose the nuclear exchange *somehow* affected the environment enough to evaporate the Sydney Harbor, Tasman Sea and some part of the South Pacific Ocean... The harbor is not far from the Tasman Sea and the Pacific. Because when they fly past the bridge there is no water to be seen.

in many cultures owls are considered ill fortune and messengers of death........but I'm sure it's just a bird.

The intro is gold with George whining about his big city problems and Simone sitting in her 'cabin in the woods' desperately trying to act like she cares... Well, she cares about the cat. Why would you want to live like that? Simone got it right. A cabin in the woods. Humans are not designed for city life.

We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome), the song in the credits, by Tina Turner, is so quintessentially 80s to me. It has that "I just saw an awesome movie, and now the credits song is floating me out of the theater (or soothing me in my living room if we rented the VHS cassette, or it came on cable eventually). It takes me right back to that other world, which was so alien to the one we live in now. I love parts of this one, like I get to watch fun reaction videos, and ask Google and ChatGPT all my questions (we could never get an answer to anything we wondered back then), but I do miss the feeling of that world. To me, it was cozy, and full of magic and wonder.

Frank Thring who played The Collector in this movie, also played Pontius Pilate in BEN-HUR, which you have also reviewed.
