Grew up watching scooby doo. I actually think the second film is better, more scooby doo monsters.

I grew up loving the cartoon and seeing this at the age of 5 in theaters is one of my most beloved childhood memories. Now of course there were jokes I didn’t get at the time but I still loved it. And the whole plot line with Scrappy was because, in the late 70s Scrappy was added to the cartoon as Scoobys nephew to try and freshen the show up, but most people at the time ended up hating scrappy and found him annoying. People’s opinion on scrappy today is mixed, and some people genuinely like him. But that was why they made him the villain here.

Simone is right that the casting for this film is absolutely PERFECT. I can't think of any actors better suited to their roles. But for the movie as a whole I'm much more ambivalent. Quite often it's laughing AT the franchise instead of laughing WITH. But it also never goes far enough to be construed as a full-on parody. So it's sitting in muddied waters. Scrappy-Doo is representative of the common trend of long-running shows to add a new character (Usually either very young and cute or very sexy) to boost ratings. Scrappy is Scooby's nephew, and he was introduced to the franchise when the ratings started to sag in the late '70s. Because of this, Scrappy dominated the franchise for a while and later there was a massive fan backlash against him (TVTropes even calls characters that are excessively hated by a fandom "The Scrappy"). However, what most fans now forget is that the reason he took over the franchise is that people LOVED him at the time. He did save the ratings, and he stuck around because of his popularity. It's only in RETROSPECT that people got sick of him because of how in-your-face the producers made him.

I needed this today.

Nostalgia! I hope you guys check out the sequel too. Although my favorite Scooby Doo movie is animated, “Scooby Doo on Zombie Island” (1998).

JoeE

Definitely agree with Simone about casting, esp Mathew lillard

Emily G

You should definitely watch Rat Race (2001) it has Rowan in it and he’s hilarious. I think you guys would enjoy it

Dan Holmes

Just think, we could be watching Candyman right now 😅😔😋

Jeb Manning

This one is a decent, little goofy parody of the franchise. Personally, I never hated Scrappy Doo. Scrappy is a tiny guy willing to walk up to monsters and punch them in the face. He's awesome. I really recommend reacting to the sequel, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed. It deals more with Scooby Doo lore and, in particular, the monsters the Scooby Gang unmasked during their career.

Jeb Manning

If you guys wanted to react to other Scooby-Doo movies, there are a few good ones I could recommend: -Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf (1988) -Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island (1998) -Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost (1999) -Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders (2000) -Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase (2001) -Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire (2003)

Scooby doo on zombie island is a must!!!!

Divinerights

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend Scooby doo mystery incorporated. It’s a fantastic show any adult would enjoy and does a good job of making characters from the franchise. The best if not the only scooby show to have arcs

Adam Wetstein

Please get baked when watching Scooby Doo

Tyler Foster

Not that I really expect this but if this gets us even the tiniest bit closer to having Josie and the Pussycats on the channel I will be over the moon.

jmundt33a

Why do you want to torture your fellow patrons like that??

jmundt33a

Lillard’s time as Cereal K in Hackers seemed to prime him for this role specifically.

Tyler Foster

Josie and the Pussycats is a masterpiece (and I think better at being a subversive take on an old cartoon than this one, although that's the fault of the studio here -- and apparently in part because Josie wasn't a success at the box office).

Tyler Foster

Would love to see Hackers on the channel.

jmundt33a

It Josie wanted to do to the Max Martin era of the music industry what All About Steve wanted to do to catastrophizing cable news. They were successful to exactly the same degree.

Tyler Foster

Pretty sure the film's effectiveness is subjective (not to mention, the metric by which one measures that success is also in the eye of the beholder -- quality of the film, box office performance, impact on the real world, longevity, etc). Bono apparently told one of the writer/directors they got it exactly right.

LC

I watched a lot of the original cartoon as a kid, but my favorite was the reboot A Pup Named Scooby Doo where everyone was aged down to little kids. They had a character called Red Herring and Fred would always blame every crime on him, and its how I learned what that phrase meant and the show pops into my head every time I hear it.

Marcus Hicks

....and especially after she was played by the uber-sexy Linda Cardellini in this film.

Joshua Bloom

So, I just got to this movie, and George asked what the difference between a beatnik and a hippy. They're different generations, beatnik's were young adults in the 60's, hippy's were young adults in the 70's.

Movies2319

Y’all definitely need to watch Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed at some point! If you enjoyed this one I have no doubt you’ll enjoy the second one as well. It’s a lot of fun!
