Mike FromOz

Bridge on the River Kwai is an absolute classic of a movie. David Lean was such a great director, and the cast for the movie is great.

Ashton Lewis

Great poll! Can't wait for 12 Years a Slave, when you get around to it as it looks like it won't be winning here. American beauty is a must see too, so happy days either way

theycallmekev

These Oscar-winning films are truly exceptional. I studied each one in film school, and I still recommend them time and time again to anyone looking to understand what makes a film great. Each one is a masterpiece in its own right…brilliantly crafted and unforgettable. While most people tend to favor films released after the 1990s, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Midnight Cowboy, Patton, and Gandhi stand as defining masterpieces of their respective decades. These classics deserve far more recognition and appreciation than they often receive.

Ian Hunt

Quick shout out for the Sting, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Spotlight as some other best picture winners worth getting round to at some point

Jeff K.

Bridge on the River Kwai is the best film on this poll, and I sure as hell hope it pulls out the win.

Dwight Scarn

The Hurt Locker is a must regardless! Such a good flick, Jeremy Renner is amazing!

Reece Chapford

You guys are the main event! I've put a number of requests in but there's been one constant: Can you please watch Walk Hard?

Mike FromOz

Start whistling the tune so that everyone can join in and get it to 1st place 😁

Oliver piercey

Reminder next time their's and Oscar poll guys one flew over the cuckoo's nest was the 2nd film to win the big 5 Oscars

Jeff K.

Plus, they'll finally be able to understand a throwaway reference that McNulty made in The Wire that they've almost certainly forgotten about since it was way back in season one!

Jeff K.

My kingdom for them to watch The Sting. It's a perfect movie.

Jeff K.

Probably need to watch Walk the Line first, but yes, Walk Hard would be fantastic.

Jeff K.

So River Kwai has me thinking about other older war movies, and there are two I'd like to throw out as suggestions: The Great Escape (1963) - LOADED cast with Steve McQueen stealing the show, amazing film The Guns of Navarone (1961) -Another strong cast, led by Gregory Peck, fantastic film

Matthew Maxon

Patton is one of the best movies in the 70s & only TBR Schmidt has reacted to it. That's shameful

dudewheresmycar

Definitely. It's a movie with Alec Guinness at his best. I would then follow-up with Spielberg's Empire of the Sun. Both Lawrence and River Kwai inspired Spielberg to become a film maker, and Empire of the Sun is his homage to both those movies. Plus you get to see Christian Bale completely carry a Spielberg movie and out act those around him even as a 13 year old kid.

Random Nevermind

Two Oscar winners I’d like to recommend: My Fair Lady One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

simon brouillard

Ugh American Beauty, the 78th best movie of 1999 . Lets go Kwai 😀. By the way, it’s perfectly fine if you love that 1999 movie, just my opinion 😉

The Gunslinger

The Bridge on The River Kwai is incredible. Btw, could you cover Atlantis: The Lost Empire ?

Bruce Woodcock

Look American Beauty was amazing at the time and I'm not a Kevin Spacey hater but I don't think it should even be on this list. The Bridge on the River Kwai and Patton are probably the two best movies here. And no love for Gandhi? That film is a must-see at some point for everyone.

Mike FromOz

Totally agreed. But I'll see how it all pans out.

Amar

American Beauty does not age well as a movie!!

Max Carter

Bridge over the RIver Kwai is probably my favourite of these, I've been to the war museum in Kanchanaburi which is extremely haunting and the film is a classic piece of cinema

Kevin M. Pitts

There is only one film that Spacey is in that I can stomach watching anymore and that is LA Confidential. So, while I did actually go see American Beauty in theaters when it came out and enjoyed it, it is ruined for me now so I can’t in good conscience vote for it. I voted for Gandhi, but I do wonder what its future will be. It is a spectacular performance, and Kingsley does have some Indian heritage, I suspect it will become more and more awkward as newer generations see it. 12 Years a Slave was my second option. Well worth a viewing at some point for anyone with a shred of humanity.

Robert Cooper

I came here to say this. It is of it's time, but today, not so much.

Random Nevermind

Let's be honest. People are voting for "The American Beauty" cause they want to see how the thumbnail gonna look like. Imagine. All those roses, Simone, George...

Ian Hunt

Amen to that

Kevin Ehle

American Beauty is Spacey's best movie by a mile. Glad to see this classic on the list.

darkmoobs

Man, American Beauty did not age well at all. Gonna be interesting to see how they feel about it all.

Jeff K.

Yeah... especially given the context surrounding Spacey these days.

Jeff K.

I really enjoyed American Beauty in the moment but man, it really does not hold up upon rewatches, especially factoring in the Spacey of it all.

Kevin Ehle

Spacey is despicable, but there are so many awful humans in Hollywood, I found I have to compartmentalize many of them so i don't miss put on good movies. Focus on their acting/directing/producing talents vs their depraved actions off the screen. I really like Spaceys character in this movie, so I give it a thumbs up.

Kevin Ehle

Yes. I just responded to someone else about this. Spacey as a human is disgusting, but I consider this as his best role, so I will still vote for American Beauty.

Alex

Wasn’t he found innocent of all claims and charges?

robodong

im not saying hes a saint or whatever but he was found innocent. not to mention its a fictional movie with a fictional character, not a biopic that depicts him as some sort of saint. if anything that makes Gandhi the one that didnt age well lmao.

darkmoobs

Doesn’t make the movie any less cringe and of its time and place. A lot of its themes are just not something I agree with and history has not been kind to it. I don’t want to go into specific story elements, for fear of spoilers. But my distaste for this movie has nothing to do with Kevin Spacey as a person.

robodong

plus more people have seen it in general.

robodong

its kind of ironic that you say Spacey ruined a fictional movie for you, but Gandhi the biopic is fine is pretty funny lol. cause it shows that you only know the sold and published image of Gandhi, not the other terrible stuff hes done like marrying and sleeping with young children, his early life in supporting the British Empire and saying the white man is better than africans and so on. Whats even more funny is Spacey was at least found innocent by the court, im not saying i think hes a saint, hell i believe he likely did all those terrible things and more. but at the very least hes literally found innocent.

robodong

fair, but S&G hasnt seen it, so let them find out and decide for themselves.

robodong

yes but but S&G hasnt seen it, so let them find out and decide for themselves?

robodong

its a good thing that its not a re-watch for S&G then, maybe let them watch it and decide for themselves?

robodong

fair enough. but at the end of the day S&G hasnt seen it so i say let them watch it and decide for themselves. why shield them from it.

NotlobParrot

Loving the love for Bridge on the River Kwai. Fingers crossed!

robodong

also, 'not age well' is kind of a strange thing to apply to this movie. like... its kind of the point, his character wasn't shown in some sympathetic light. so you cringing at it is... well its whats suppose to happen. its like watching wolf of wall street and saying it didnt age well cause bankers are doing it again. or taxi driver didnt age well cause of incels, like... yeah thats the point. youre not suppose to root for these people.

robodong

exactly yeah. finding the character distasteful is kinda the point. its like watching wolf of wall street and saying it didnt age well cause bankers are doing it again. or taxi driver didnt age well cause of incels, like... yeah thats the point. youre not suppose to root for these people.

Wrencher86

Not seeing enough love for Patton in this comment section. George C. Scott gives the performance of a lifetime.

Eric G

I would be careful about doing The Hurt Locker. IIRC, the company behind it is very contentious and has sued people that posted it online. Granted, I don't know how they feel about reactions since that was for file-sharing... but maybe better safe than sorry.

maikeru

my suggestion: Cape Fear Double Feature Reaction: Cape Fear (1991) & Cape Fear (1962) ps: so excited for the severance react tomorrow

Kevin M. Pitts

Not guilty is not the same as “found innocent.” And there are many great film performances from actors playing real people that have done terrible things. Bruno Ganz was praised for his performance in Downfall and the guy was playing Hitler. I recommend Gandhi not because it’s a shining example of an unbiased biopic, but because Ben Kingsley, despite being problematic in the role, does play the part brilliantly.

jmundt33a

The elder Burnans both suck.

jmundt33a

The big flashing NO sign was missed at the time for this, for Robocop, for Starship Troopers, for Fight Club, and for both Wall Street and Wolf of Wall Street. Somehow, it got missed by a chunk of the population for American Psycho. That baffles me.

Jay

100% Benin. American Beauty was icky long before any of that Spacey stuff came out. And he's brilliant in it, everyone is brilliant in that movie.

FWPJR.

I was hoping Patton had a chance to win this, it’s a great movie. Plus my last name is Patton and I’m actually related to him, but looking at the poll results right now it definitely doesn’t have a chance. But oh well, I know you two will watch it somewhere down the line.

My name is Jere

American beuty is great. It's time to write another positive review. (I haven't remembered to do it in a while) I watched 21 movies with you last week(had a vacation week) . I like your conversational style and even though I don't agree with everything you say, I appreciate your opinions and the atmosphere you create for me, which makes my life feel less lonely. Thank you Simone and Georgie

Brendan Rafferty

With the exception of The Hurt Locker, those are all great films Gandhi is an absolute masterpiece that you must see… …but I voted for American Beauty because it will make the better reaction video

Mike FromOz

Or if they're not up to doing the same movie twice, do a Robert Mitchum double feature and pair Cape Fear (1962) with Night of the Hunter (1955).

Vincent

The Bridge on the River Kwai

Chase Lonnergan

Hmm. This is the first time in a long time that I really don't have a horse in this race. I have no real positive enthusiasm for any of these movies and a mostly negative view of a few of them. At least the reaction should be interesting.

Helly R

Great Escape is #1, but I'd throw in Where Eagles Dare which might be my favourite.

Beddoe

following the double feature: Cape Feare (The Simpson S5E2)

Adam

More recommendations: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) - Stars Jack Nicholson. It dominated the 1976 Oscars. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) - Stars Al Pacino

Duncan

''Rain Man (1988)'' won 4 Oscars and got a massive 720 votes on a poll on this channel a few weeks ago. Fingers crossed a reaction is coming soon 🤞

Jeff I.

*sees 12 Years A Slave in 4th place* "Look how they massacred my boy."

Kenneth thomas

This is a no brainer for American Beauty imo, im glad to see the poll results agreed with me!

John

This is a great list of movies. I wanted to recommend Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums as Wes Anderson will be releasing a new movie this year The Phoenician Scheme

Michael M.

Sometimes a movie wins that wasn't the best of the year, if one can even objectively say that. But nominees are usually pretty quality

Jeff I.

I just hope they can watch it without all the "Spacey = bad person off camera = American Beauty is a bad movie" comments in their head.

Zobmie

Quite a few deserving films on this list. I'd like to add one for your consideration in days to come. Perfect Days (2023), directed by Wim Wenders and featuring Kōji Yakusho. Whatever words I could come up with to describe it wouldn't do it justice You would do yourselves a favor to watch it.

CD

An absolute WoW! I was going to post, about how American Beauty really deserves to be let out of the box...thinking, it would maybe have like 5 votes, lol. Good on the CB fam. It's dark, and creepy...and plays into the "Kevin Spacey is/was a predator thing"; but it's also a very good film. Blame the ARTIST. not the ART.

CD

See above. As for KS...man, did I LOVE his performances. The Usual Suspects, Se7en, LA Confidential...House of Cards, and if you're a fan and haven't seen it, don't miss Swimming With Sharks! Yes, acquitted but...not in ALL cases, but in THIS case...I believe where there was smoke, there WAS fire. I was "happy" to see his "apology tour", but...IMO, he didn't come off very well. Again...punish the artist, not the art.

CD

@cc decc Context is not something people practice much of these days. I may have grown up, in the drug-hazed 70s...and come of age, in the image-obsessed 80s; but I'd rather have this thick skin and b r o a d experiences for it...as opposed to these entitled, fragile gens.

Chris Truex

Fantastic list. I went with American Beauty, simply because I don't think there are enough reactions to it out there

CD

Yeah; if you think about it...he was really good, at playing "creeps"...lol. Still...he's not alone, in "playing himself in a way that an audience feels compelling", so...

Haye Zeus

Everything but American Beauty.

CD

And every time someone mentions Spotlight...I will mention All The President's Men!

CD

Ugh; no one was a bigger Wes fan...but I thought The French Dispatch and Asteroid City, were snooze-fests.

Vengeance

KS is a creep but he’s got some great movies behind him. All you mentioned are good, but so is the underrated “Kpax” Yes, blame the artist, not the art.

Vengeance

Voted for American Beauty. Say what you want about Spacey, but there are a lot of skeletons in a lot of closets in Hollywood. Can we separate the Art from the Artists? I believe we can.

Brandon Meng

Would kill for any Wes Anderson movie reactions. I love The Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore but Moonrise Kingdom doesn't get enough love, so I'd advocate for that the most.

Brandon Meng

Ready for the inevitable George/rose pedals reaction thumbnail

Florian

Highly reccomend, 12 Years a Slave, maybe some black history month or something, its not really a snack movie... Also reccomend the following: - La vita è bella (Life Is Beautiful) - Im Westen nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front) - The Boondock Saints - Death Proof (we still didn't close the Tarantino file...) - Planet Terror (as a double feature to Death Proof) - Fearless (Special uncut whatever, everything that goes) - Gangs of New York - Sleepers - La famille Bélier

DonkyDave

12 years a slave is a VERY hard watch, great film but kinda glad it's not winning

Elizabeth

I submitted a request for them to watch 'La Vita e bella' (Life is Beautiful) 2 years ago....I really hope it gains traction. It's an amazing movie.

Elizabeth

There's an amazing kdrama out right now called 'When Life Gives You Tangerines'.....I laughed and cried almost every episode. I know it's a commitment to watch 16 episodes, but it's so worth it. BEAUTIFUL story.

Gryff

As much as I hate to promote certain actors, American Beauty is a film that changed my life and perspective on mortality.

Jeff K.

I will say about American Beauty, though: Chris Cooper is fantastic in it. But then again, Chris Cooper is fantastic in everything. (Here's hoping they get around to October Sky at some point for the channel; very under-appreciated movie with what is, in my opinion, one of Cooper's best performances.)

Jeff K.

Acquitted =\= innoncent. See also: Simpson, OJ Spacey is a phenomenal actor, but he is also a total creep (someone I work with has a story about him, which he told me BEFORE all of the Anthony Rapp stuff came out, so it was in no way influenced by the whole "Kevin Spacey is a creep" stuff; it just lends more credence to that discourse).

Shonnicus

Remember Ray(2004). Many same beats of Walk the Line but umm yeah....

Dan Holmes

fuck yeah so far, although 12 years a slave would be cool too ;) but they're all good, except hurt locker lol

Shonnicus

Alright not many if any has mentioned Midnight Cowboy, Maybe some of the two best performances in a film. This was on the cusp of the New Hollywood movement of the 1970s. Now idk about reaction, but damn fine performances. "Everybody's talkin' at me"

Kevin

12 years a slave for sure

JiggyTurtle

Anyone who says, paraphrased, just hours after being accused, "I don't remember doing sexual things while drunk to [named alleged victim] when he was a minor, but If I did, I apologize. I will also take this moment to announce that I am gay" might not be a great dude. He was also already known by people working in the industry, for decades, to be one of those people with power that you don't stay alone with in a room. That's not a reputation people typically just get out of nowhere.

Actuarial Lurker

Gandhi with little to no support? Patton and Midnight Cowboy almost as dismal???...sad

sarCC

I'm hoping you two want to watch more Gene Hackman movies. The first two Superman movies are great, but I'm recommending Get Shorty; It's one of Hackman's funniest roles and it could lead to more adaptations of crime/western author Elmore Leonard.

Adam Wetstein

I think River Kwai with George Dad then Midnight Cowboy

Michael Nemo

lol. I never said that they shouldn't watch it. This post is about voting about prioritization. Not about not including a film. FYI

Andy Rio

American Beauty won 5 Academy Awards including Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor in the Leading Role, Best Director and Best Picture of the Year.

CD

Can they do an "X-rated" film reaction?? LOL

John

Gene Hackman is great in the superman movies. I would also recommend Enemy of the State, The Conversation, Crimson Tide, Mississippi Burning, Hoosiers, and The Royal Tenenbaums,

Lars G

I really try not criticize other people’s choices, god knows there’s plenty to disagree on when it comes to film tastes and I’m sure lots of people would roll their eyes at my faves, but couldn’t agree more. Feel like this move really didn’t age well.

Robert Finlay

It really didn't. And not just because of Spacey. In my very respectful opinion, it is the worst movie in this poll.

Robert Finlay

Midnight Cowboy really isn't X-rated by modern standards.

sarCC

Definitely Crimson Tide, a criminally-underseen film. It is another movie where Hackman plays a hardass (and I hoped to show S&G more of his range), but he's imminently more charming in it than in Unforgiven. Easily my favorite submarine film.

Ootlander

Oh it's easily the worst in the poll, not even close.

James Smith

Definitely not overrated

Brandon Meng

Greeeeaaaat picks +1 La Vita e bella, Boondock Saints, Death Proof, Planet Terror (only if they do the combined Grindhouse feature w/ fake trailers), and especially Gangs of New York.

michael denny

The Bridge on the river kwai is the perfect movie.

Actuarial Lurker

The Bird Cage with Robin Williams as the "father" of the groom and Gene Hackman as the Conservative Republican father of the "bride" is hilarious...Hank Azaria is brilliant as the "butler"... my wife and I are straight but were rolling on the floor pi$$ing our pants with Nathan Lane's "mother" role and the sight gags and dead pan sarcasm

Brandon Meng

All fantastic films. Maybe we could do a parallel poll with other award winning movies? Other major award institute winners, Best Actor/Actress winners, original screenplay, etc... My list: Manchester by the Sea (Best Actor) Sideways (Golden Globes Best Comedy) Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Best Actress) Midnight in Paris (Best Original Screenplay) Scent of a Woman (Best Actor) Almost Famous (Best Original Screenplay) Moonstruck (Best Actress) Nebraska (Cannes Film Festival Best Actor) Perks of Being a Wallflower (Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie: Drama) .. don't judge, this movie is legit Cheers!

Jay Davis

"Hey, I'm votin' here!"

Actuarial Lurker

Lars G and others- the cinematography is still great- it deserved that Oscar. But forgetting Spacey, the film didn't age well suffering from what Tropic Thunder mocked so brilliantly- winning awards by going "full ret-d" or wearing black face to "seem authentic". The surprise part of the film makes it not rewatchable the same way that after you see the Sixth Sense you then know the ending...

Actuarial Lurker

Yes they had to slap an X on a movie that had gay sex workers in it for that time period

BangDroid

I am aligned with this poll

BangDroid

It won 5 Oscars which is the point of the poll

CD

I get it. I get jokes

CD

@robertfinlay thank you cap'n

Forsythe

I'm really hoping the Kevin Spacey movie doesn't win the poll.

Kaushik Sethunath

I really hope you guys watch Birdman some day. I think it would be right up your alley, and a lot fun to pick apart together!

Downside dn

Oh... the winner is going to make you guys feel soooo weird

beecroft adams

Lars and the real girl, Drive, Bronson, Prisoners and Three Kings.

BellaBlue

I'm surprised yet not surprised at what will win... I'll withhold thoughts..haha Lots of other top notch films...I went w 12 years A Slave but would have been happy w pretty much anything that won't win.. C'est La Vie

BellaBlue

Requests to add to the list focusing on Comedies - Booksmart (2019) - Drive Away Dolls (2024) - The Edge of Seventeen (2016) - Sausage Party (2016) - Good Boys (2019) - House Bunny (2008) - American Ultra (2015) - Palm Springs (2020) - Ruby Sparks (2012) - Y2K (2024)

Bob Steger

Great movie. The camerawork along is worth watching, but the performances and the soundtrack really make this one special.

Shonnicus

Top Secret is great. Don't ever want to over-hype it but it's close with Airplane

Shane Darcy

Very surprised American Beauty is winning, but great movie so I’m here for it

Kevin C.

Oh man, Midnight Cowboy. Not this time...

Kris

Man, hurt locker is such a great movie that tells such a great story about war, but man it might also be the among the least accurate war movies ever made. I have such conflicted feelings about that film

sarCC

Booksmart is a must...because Bottoms is a perfect follow-up.

Be Human

Layer Cake The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Natural Born Killers Lucky Number Slevin The Royal Tenenbaums

Pearl Jam

Jumanji: The Next Level

Benfica Sarajevo

Please review The Negotiator with Samuel L Jackson

Jean-Dominic Lapointe

My ex girlfriend’s younger brother was a big Smallville fan. When we watched the first Superman movie, he kept complaining that Hackman didn’t look anything like Lex Luther. When he took off his wig at the end… I never saw someone that happy to have been wrong.

Fattydoe

Natural born killers. Written by quentin tarantino himself until sold to studio and aquired by oliver stone who directed it. Juliet lewis and woody Harrelson. Not to mention my personal fav character robert downey jr ever played.

Amar

Hurtlocker came 3rd??? NOOOOOO!!!

Ricardo Alanis

George and Simone, do you plan to react to The Last of Us S2?

Kyle B

American Beauty is one of those movies that just made me feel gross. Definitely not a movie I want to revisit over and over, but it's worth watching once. I'd personally rather watch any of the other four nominees of that year.

Brad Lowry

Someday soon you should put "Ghandi" on a poll with only one option as it is a sui generis film. I think this is a great Poll and there can be no quibbles with however it turns out. ...but "Ghandi" is unlike any other film I've ever seen. It was so important and so powerful that it's receiving an Oscar was the least remarkable thing about it.

Chris Adams

Even though it may not win I really hope they get to Bridge on The River Kwai dinner rather than later. Classic films are great in a different way than more modern films.

Adam K

American Beauty will be a rough watch - anything but that

Kaushik Sethunath

Completely agreed Bob. But after multiple watches, I think the part that really sticks with me is how well the form (which could seem like a gimmick the first time) is actually married to the story and the themes. Fluidly playing it out like one long take that isn't trying to convince you its happening in real time, lets them really dive deep into the themes of art and artistry, appreciation, love and adoration, relevancy, and just film vs theater. What a fantastic film! And interestingly enough, I think one that would be brilliant in one of those "let's get high and watch this together" settings, if they ever decide to do that again haha.

robodong

so dont rewatch it? but let S&G figure it out and decide for themselves. theyre not children that needs to be sheltered, something being rough is not a reason to not experience it.

Brandon

IMO 'The Ice Storm' handles similar themes about dark secrets in upper middle class neighbourhoods much better. Sadly, it didn't win best picture.

Dirge Girl

John Carpenter finally got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, last week... how 'bout some love from the channel? • Starman (1984) [Sci-fi/Romance] - Jeff Bridges got an Oscar nom for Best Actor. • In the Mouth of Madness (1994) [Horror/Fantasy] - can you believe Sam Neill has never been nominated for an Oscar? • Prince of Darkness (1987) [Horror/Fantasy] - nor for Donald Pleasence???

China Andronicus

Next time you’re looking for TV shows, you should really consider Black Sails. Absolutely phenomenal. Sorry for the lack of relevance; I have a horrible memory so I thought I’d throw it out there while I was thinking about it. 😅

Ginger

Oh no, American Beauty. That one hasn't aged well to say the least. I'll pass but I hope you'll enjoy it. I remember my film professor back then going crazy about it. I still have the printed script somewhere that he made us analyze.

Ginger

There's a very well made film I never want to watch again. :D Also my introduction to Rodney Dangerfield, which made it super uncomfortable to see him in anything else after that ^^
