According to Casino Royale, Bond "prefers" married women. Well, what he really wants is relationships that are strategically complicated and emotionally uncomplicated. Heard a little joke. Did you notice how after getting debilitating brain surgery Bond didn't even slow down? Could it be because his brain is mostly scar tissue after all the drink, blows to the head and syphilis he's had? And now you have the best movie in the series left! (Opinion.) It's really really long, that's probably the one thing you want to know going in.

Monica Alarcon

That is correct. The Day of the Dead parade was not a thing until this movie. Then we were like: so all gringos expect a parade and big celebrations and like 90% of Hollywood movies that take place in Mexico are during Day of the Dead so let's give it to them. But yeah. I actually grew up with Halloween and trick or treating and never put a relative's picture in an ofrenda.

Monica Alarcon

Also, the man on the elevator at the beginning behind Bond and his date went on to become Namor on the MCU...

Ginger

Spectre? I hardly know her!

Ginger

"Skulls are associated with bad things?" "Wait, are you saying ... are we the baddies?"

davidov

The last one long? To me Spectre felt longer, NTTD just flew by; one big rollercoaster where almost every scene is exciting and picks up right after another. I agree it's one of the most unique ones, and also one of the strongest ones.... It stays with you a lot longer than most Bond movies. And that's all I want to say about it before they've seen it, I hope the community won't give away too much ;)

I don't know if you are both fans of Radiohead (I think Simone is), but they were hired to write the theme song for SPECTRE, but the producers went with a song by Sam Smith instead. The link below shows what the opening credits would have been like with Radiohead's (superior, imo) theme restored. https://youtu.be/o4mIWoLg69Y?si=KKXfSnUhooHvkde7 There's another good video on YouTube about how Radiohead's theme might even be the most perfectly constructed Bond theme song. I don't know about that, but I love the song. https://youtu.be/tiesXqT1P3g?si=ts-TIonFqg46uv4D

And for me that sequence is the highlight of the movie! Oh well.

Ste Rawlings

This is the Bond film that should get the level of hate that Quantum of Solace does imo

It's ok, there are good points and bad points. "I will never sleep with you ever, ever" - cut to her sleeping with Bond, lol. No Time To Die is better, but nothing reaches the heights of Skyfall again (no pun intended). For more Lea Seydoux I recommend Beauty and the Beast (the French one from 2014, not the Emma Watson crap).

Harry Fieldson

I totally agree that an old bond would be really cool. I know the frontrunners for the next actor are all still a younger age - but even if it were just for one or two films in between the big decade long spree that star will likely sign up for I'd love to see more of a Mike from Better Call Saul style theme. An old man in a young man's game, slightly broken, a bit jaded, maybe losing allies etc. and play with some themes younger actors can't. Especially since Craig, if bonds were described as tools, was definitely the sledgehammer and had a ton of physicality. Would be cool to see a wise old grumpy British codger vibe played by someone like Gary Oldman or Sean Bean.

Ginger

I hope you'll get into some of the old bond movies some day. You'll get SO many "aha" monents <3 - If I'd had to pick one it would be Goldfinger. That's the quintessential classic era Bond film.

So about your "possibly very stupid question" ... You mentioned that Dr. Evil is a spoof of a James Bond villain. Yes, it's a nod to the (at the time) stereotypical, pulling the strings behind the curtain without resorting to violence himself kind of villain. It's usually a bald man in a grey or black suit with mao collars, who usually has a floofy white pet cat. The main villain in the cartoon Inspector Gadget fits such a stereotype, as does the head of Team Rocket in Pokemon - Giovanni, who has a white Persian cat. Ernst Stavro Blofeld is a recurring character in the James Bond novels and the old movies (1963 - 1983), though he only is a direct adversary in a few of them. In others, he is as mentioned before, only indirectly James' enemy.

Odd Thomas

Yes, Blofeld is a call back to the original movies. There was a whole thing when Spectre came out where people were taking bets on if Waltz would turn out to be Blofeld. From the 90s onwards (maybe even before that) Bond really dialled up the nods to previous adventures. It all got a bit tiresome & was partly why they rebooted it more seriously with Craig.

Philipp Roensch

It's a drop after Skyfall, but nothing really could compare. Apart from it being a bit to long, I think the over reliance on doing classic stunts* but executed worse is my disappointment with it. 5 screenwriters is rarely a good sign. I grew fond of the narrative though, the new tech vs old tricks, digging a bit into Bonds and her past, works. Total surveillance, rightfully a shitter deal than sexy agents :). Monica Bellucci has better chemistry than Sedoux, sorry, not sorry :). And Ben Whishaw is for Q deadpan humor. Great watch with you guys as always. Trivia: Sean Bean was 006 in Goldeneye, another died in the opening of Skyfall, quite a few in the old movies. To give some context around the Craig Bond releases, you probably know that he was a controversial choice, but Casino Royale such a great start, only missing the classic globe-trotting and stunts. No fault of CR, not the story for that, but I think after Skyfall reintroduced classic theme, car and barrel shot at the end, the wanted to go back there. Specter opens with them and goes globe-trotting again, clearly riding nostalgia now, but - the old ones did those better already, and with less CG assistance. Just to explain the discrepancy some of the fans might have. Of course, this all to say, please feel free to watch old Bond, they can range from serious, impressive in F history, to not aged well and absolutely goofy. I'm personally fondest of Connery and Brosnan.

REDR58

I would to see S&G dip back into classic Bond and make their way through all the movies they haven’t seen. Maybe one a month? Oh and yes Monica Bellucci! She is wonderful. She has a small role in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) and a larger role in the movie “Malèna” (2000).

D. T. Nelson

Those coming from the earlier Bond movies would know about SPECTRE, so it's interesting seeing you guys speculation on the meaning. SPECTRE & Blofeld both came from the eary Bond movies. Did you notice the other reference to Austin Powers' Dr. Evil? The cat that jumped on Bond's lap? Direct reference to the original Blofeld.

REDR58

I would love Simone and George to watch at least a few of the older Bond actors’ movies. I love the Roger Moore films most of all, despite how goofy they can be, because those are the ones I grew up with. But they surely should watch a few Connery ones at the very least.

REDR58

She is also very good in “Blue Is the Warmest Colour” (2013), an excellent if not somewhat controversial film.

Ste Rawlings

I'm only a fan of the Daniel Craig Bond films. This was my first time watching this one since seeing it when it came out and really not liking it, and this watch made me realise why. It's so much more in keeping with the older Bond films than the first 3 Craig films.

Sean Hennessy

I thought I remember one or both of you being Radiohead fans. If so check out their song for this movie. They were asked to submit a theme song that they didn't go with, but that is much better in my opinion (and many others).

Brandon

George, you've been watching Bond movies with a woman this entire time. Is it not clear that every woman is a Bond woman yet? 😂 The train fight with Bautista is so damn badass. It's a great callback to a train brawl in an earlier Bond movie, but I won't say which. It's one of my favorite hand-to-hand fights in an action movie, though.

Sean Hennessy

Simone's eyes during the "interrogation scene".

Sean Hennessy

Incase it was not obvious as well, the original Blofield was the model for Dr Evil.

REDR58

I won't say which movie it is, but there is a James Bond movie with a body-count of 196! James Bond doesn't kill them all directly, perhaps... The hard to access mountaintop facility that Swann works at is a callback to a similar-looking building in an older Bond movie, also high in the mountains. Airwolf fans, check out the CNN report from the Cape Town Explosion at 1:16:40, there is a black Bell 222 helicopter seen flying over the city that looks just like Airwolf! I wonder if that was an Easter egg? Simone is right, any woman in a Bond movie that interacts with Bond is definitely a "Bond Girl." I think what Simone is saying about how the movie feels like a treasure hunt, there is a lot of lucky happenstance (the collapsing roof that turns into a slide, the couch, etc), but that is very typical of older Bond movies. Rear-hinged or "suicide doors" are not as safe as forward-hinged doors as they can be forced open at high speed from the air moving past the car. Cars with such doors also sometimes lack a central support pillar between the doors, (called a "B pillar"; the angled support at the windshield is a "A pillar"), reducing the structural integrity of the passenger cabin during a rollover, etc. Also, the side impact damage can be worse with cars that have front and rear-hinged doors that open from the center. Blofeld is wearing a "Nehru" jacket (also a callback to older Bond movies and it is also what Dr. Evil wears): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehru_jacket Q warned Bond that the watch he gave him had a "loud" alarm (explosive). Elaborate villain traps and delays are yet another hallmark of classic Bond villains. Anyway, I think Craig really should have stopped here if he was serious about quitting, but alas, we will have to endure No Time to Die. Hopefully you both will like it better than I did.

Chase Schleich

You may get your wish. Nolan is rumored to be the top contender to direct the next Bond film. MGM/Amazon just bought the rights to Bond and they're rebooting now that Daniel Craig isn't playing the character anymore. Nolan would be the driving force behind the vision for the next series of Bond films if he agrees to direct the first film. Haven't heard anything about these rumors in the last couple weeks though. We're just waiting for confirmation of who the director is going to be at this point. Once a director is hired, they'll then start casting for the new Bond.

Ginger

And then there was the time James Bond beat up The Rock's grandfather. (true story :D Sean Connery did that.)

Rupert Purcat

I am so looking forward to you finding the easter egg origins in these movies. The 'spider web' rope stuff is 'detonation cord' and delay detonators for the demolition of the building. Also there is a lot of lore embedded in the movies from the original books.

Rupert Purcat

You both really need to watch the Cumberbatch Sherlock Holmes series as well. Cheers

FranciscoGios

When George said “elemental damage!!” My brain just completely told me “SkyRim!” but I know George was thinking of another ARPG game. We got another movie because they didn’t killed off the villain.

Christian Rennie

Another Daniel Craig movie I think you'll both enjoy is "Cowboys vs Aliens" (2011). Also starring Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Clancy Brown, Sam Rockwell.... et al.... It is definitely a popcorn movie. Great special effects and well acted. Kinda hard not to be well acted with such a stacked cast.

p0sthum4n

It took me like 3 solid minutes to figure out what the hell Simone's cat's snoring was

David Lonewolf Wright

I actually found myself enjoying this one more than I have in the past. It still ranks number 2 from the bottom from the Craig Bond series with Casino Royal and Skyfall in my 1 and 2 spot. My only problems with this one was they started adding some of those old Bond super lucky trope moments here and there and felt like they were breaking the established tone. If you are a woman and are saved by Bond, make out with Bond (or other things with Bond), or even work with him, you are a Bond girl.
