Well, this video is unwatchable now. You’re rewatching 10 whole seconds?! This is Bull💩! 🤣😂

Monica Alarcon

Ah you've finally met Lt. M'ress (the cat lady)... She's a Caitian. We see more of her species later and even a regular in Lower Decks... She appears only in the animated series and later in comics and novels.

Monica Alarcon

Well of course the devil is at the center of the Galaxy What did you expect? God??

Monica Alarcon

Good news Simone. There is an explicit reference to Giant Spock in Lower Decks so it is canon...

Kurt Hockenbury

On top of other science issues, the Magicks of Megas-Tu was written before we realized there is a giant black hole at the center of our galaxy.

I believe there's a Caitian that appears (extremely briefly!) during Star Trek IV. And of course, Dr. T'Ana during Lower Decks, as you mentioned. I wonder if M'Ress likes to snack on Betazoids too?

Monica Alarcon

Yes! That one. Also maybe there's a Caitian dancer in Star Trek V? But she has 3 certain attributes that may not be Caitian...

Just noticed 'The Infinite Vulcan' was written by Walter Koenig, aka Chekov

OMG, the Kzinti!! I will talk about them more when we get to that TAS episode, but I didn't remember that they were mentioned before then! (Keniculus includes them when he lists violent/aggressive peoples like the Romulans and Klingons.) And don't worry if you don't know who they are, they're from a whole other scifi universe that I like, but appear very rarely here and there in Star Trek. :)

Actuarial Lurker

Thats the same Cyrano Jones that you've seen before

Simone's Coconut Squire

So now that Simone has had her "infamy" moment, y'all HAVE to do The Three Amigos!

Actuarial Lurker

M'Ress is grrreat...sorry couldn't resist that. Reminds me of Josie and the Pussycats...long tails and ears for hats

I'm with Simone on this, I love the goofiness, the camp of the show. Back in the day animated movies and shows were made for kids, and ONLY kids, so it tracks. And it makes me wonder what a Saturday morning was like for kids in the 70s, I was an 80s kid and Saturdays were awesome for us (when I didn't have baseball or soccer games to play, and my dad didn't put me to work in the yard or yelling at me as his mechanic's assistant lol). We had so many great shows, not just cartoons like Transformers or Thundercats, but also live action shows like Mr. Wizard and You Can't Do That On Television, Pee Wee's Playhouse, on and on. I really think 80s kids had the best childhood, even though a lot of us were latch key kids.

Just FYI, its no secret animation was very expensive since everything was hand drawn. Back in the hey days of Saturday morning cartoons, animation studios were under immense time and budget pressures to churn out shows. The studio that produced TAS, Filmation, along with other Hanna-Barbera cartoons, were notorious for its low budget, low frame rate animations that became a hallmark style of that era of western TV Animation. They purposely minimized movement and expressions to keep animation costs down, and like you commented, they reused animation cells all the time. In fact im pretty sure regardless of the franchise, they always used the same templates for character models and movement animations which is why alot of those cartoons all looked and felt the same. I grew up watching the Super Friends, He-Man Masters of the Universe and Fat Albert. In fact, this animation style was so low budget and easy to do with modern technology, that during the golden era of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in the mid 2000s, one of the hallmark shows was Sealab 2021 in which a modern animation studio bought the rights and pretty much reused the original cells from a 70s kids cartoon Sealab 2020 and created an adult oriented comedy version of the show using the same animation style with talented comedic voice actors that older people grew up watching as kids which added to the comedy and parody. Point is, the classic, don't move anything but the lips, was a hall mark of 70s/80s animation. Of course there existed plenty of much high quality animations, ie Disney Movies and Looney Toons but these were much higher budget and usually theatrical releases rather than low budge Saturday morning cartoons on TV.

just try to remember the giant spock when you get into Lower Decks in 10 years....

Simon Pegged Me

I don't know if it was brought up when you watched the TOS episode "The Way to Eden," but originally, the female lead hippie was suppose to be Bones's daughter, Joanna. In the end, the writers made the character Chekov's childhood friend, Irina, intending to save Joanna for an appearance in a later episode that never came.

Jomero

Oh man.... I hope you're moving towards The Next Generation!!! I know Simone will be happy. I will follow along so hard when you guys get there! (I'm not much of a TOS guy) Just bear in mind that the first season of TNG is pretty rough. Like, really rough.

Jeb Manning

Oh no, TAS is canon again. Lower Decks made TAS, and in particular, this episode, canon again. You have to remember that at some point, you'll see Giant Spock again.

Jeb Manning

Maybe I'm not sure. I don't pay as much attention to the Star Trek expanded universe stuff. I just know that Lower Decks certainly made it canon.

Lintrinsic

Disturbing as it seems, TAS is canon, alpha canon at that. Roddenberry attempted to decanonise it but it didn't stick. So giant Spock hanging around is a thing.

Lintrinsic

I heard somewhere Chekov's girlfriend in the Way to Eden was originally intended to be Bones' daughter but they changed it. So they added it in TAS to make her canon anyway.
