This film was a surprise for everybody when it came out. It was expected to be a forgettable low-budget release that made a few bucks and was forgotten, but word-of-mouth made it a success past all expectations. This started the "Riddick" franchise, which wasn't planned originally, but kept going after this first film.

The Riddick movies are pretty cool, definitely worth checking out and gets into his origins.

Didn't really know what to expect from this movie when it came out, just saw the trailer and was like, "Oh cool that dude from Saving Private Ryan." You might recognize the antagonist, Cole Hauser, from Good Will Hunting and 2 Fast 2 Furious (which, ironically, is the only movie in that franchise in which his Pitch Black co-star Vin Diesel does NOT appear). He's also stealthily perhaps the biggest Hollywood nepo baby working today (I like him as an actor, to be clear): his father was actor Wings Hauser, who recently passed away, and his maternal grandfather, Milton Sperling, was an Academy Award nominated screenwriter, his paternal grandfather, Dwight Hauswer, was also a screenwriter, but the biggest "nepo" thing of all: his great-grandfather was Harry Warner... as in, one of the actual Warner Bros.

Also a videogame "Riddick: Escape from Butcher Hell" is a very good videogame and got good reviews and that is a prequel basically for Riddick, how he got those eyes and the history with Johns.

Just based on this movie, I figured Riddick was an engineered super-soldier gone rogue - it would explain the superhuman strength and resilience, and screwing with his brain chemistry to make him better in combat would explain why "the primitive side, the animal side" is so strong. The sequel went in a different direction, though. Which reminds me: you should watch Soldier, the Kurt Russel movie. Good companion piece to this one.

Oooo I bet that was fun. I watched this way back when but only at home multiple times as far as I remember. I always enjoyed this series. Different and weird and very fun.

Chronicles of Riddick (2004) is worth watching too. You get a lot more of his lore and background on his race.

Yeah. Graphics were good (now its an old game) and all the voice actors were top tier, especially Vin Diesel. He did not phone that in! Also it had the most rewarding hand to hand combat system to this day. I remember there was a setup for big combat, everyone told that guy is the best, when eventually fight game, i made a sick dodge (first person view), grabbed that bad guys hand and finished him with one hit to the neck :D But it could have gone the opposite way, throwing fists back and forth. There is a youtube video, of all cutscenes with gameplay, that is to me a mandatory watch to expand the Riddick universe and where it got started for him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4EVGzOnX8k

Oh dang, that's right, I briefly forgot about that one! Also, it's funny: I mentioned Vin briefly showing up in Tokyo Drift and totally forgot that literally the only reason he cameos in that one is because Universal gave him the rights to Riddick in exchange for his appearance.

You mentioned things evolving on the planet and questioning how they lived and such. It makes more sense if you think of them kinda like predatory cicadas. They only emerge during a triple eclipse, which are decades apart, so the surface wildlife don’t have the opportunity to evolve defenses.

Fun fact the glowing bugs are a part of the aliens life cycle, they actually glow so they don't get eaten by the adults due to them being cannibals.

"How does he know so much about them?!" ... I mean, you JUST watched him watch them eat the boy... so I'd think it is reasonable to assume they find us palatable.

I was so glad you guys enjoyed this -- it's such a fun, smart movie and really beautifully written, acted, and produced on a seriously small budget for this kind of film. I love the cast and have adored Radha Mitchell ever since. The Chronicles of Riddick sequel is just wonderful, even if the critics eviscerated it.
