Pitch Black - Patreon Version

It'd honestly be a bit more entertaining if you just looked up a spoiler free synapse instead of trying to guess.

Mitchell Bowker

Fun fact! It’s 10pm at night here in Sydney, about to download the reaction and stream the movie on my laptop, then BOOM power outage. Pitch black.

robodong

how would they know if a synapse is spoiler free until theyve read it, and if its poorly written and does contain spoilers, then its too late. moreover, how is someone reading some text and just being told info more entertaining?

BubblyRainbows

Yes! My special non-birthday celebration begins! "Pitch Black" and "Child's Play 2"! What a weekend! Let's go!

IncredibleBulk

i may be in the minority here but Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. i always remember seeing the trailer and then watching the film thinking this isnt what i expected

Amelie W

You probably have to carefully look up the Chronicles of Riddick cross-media conglomerate to figure out how it all fits together. I remember like four movies plus some animated shorts and a couple of videogames. Though what I most remember is that Pitch Black and the movie that's just called Chronicles of Riddick stand quite well on their own, together or by themselves. I like the three star system here. Such complicated day/night/double day/triple day/super night cycles. In the real world there is a six star system we know about, two sets of twin stars orbiting each other while orbiting a third set of giants if I remember correctly. Living on a planet orbiting any of them I imagine you'd get dizzy trying to figure out what days and nights are. I figure the monsters hibernate between the long nights, unless there's an underground ecosystem that sustains them that the previous settlers somehow never found. Seeing as they eat each other they'd have to depend on other food showing up during the 22 years of day to not go extinct eventually. I never thought about it before but I guess they'd have to be an invasive species.

JediLounger

So if you want to keep going the other movies are very obvious, but the animated short movie (The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury, 2004) is easy to miss. There are also two video games (Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena). Those games are out of print but the GOG.com version can be found...around, if you know where to look. A bunch of comics as well, been a while since I have read them. If you just want to watch and not read or play, then I would advise going in release order. The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury (2004) The Chronicles of Riddick (2004). The Extended Cut is a better movie. Riddick (2013) The coming fourth movie Riddick: Furya

beecroft adams

Don't watch the sequel utter trash. Vin Diesel was in a film called Boiler Room which I remembered liking.

beecroft adams

Films to watch The Great Escape, High Fidelity, Thelma and Louise, Edward Scissorhands, Being John Malkovich, Sleepers and Primal Fear.

Joel the Human

Anyone know if this is the Theatrical (1:44:00) or Director's Cut (1:53:00), neither length on Amazon matches up with the 1:48 shown here

BubblyRainbows

I don't know about everyone else, but I really hope you'll also watch the other movies in the series. Personally, while none of them are perfect movies, I enjoyed all three of the existing ones. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of them. I'm also looking forward to tomorrow's reaction as well. Hope you're having a great weekend.

robodong

its theatrical. amazons displayed runtime is really dumb as it doesnt include credits. netflix has the same version

Ashton Lewis

You should definitely watch Chronicles of Riddick and then watch Riddick. Slightly different vibe to Chronicles, but I still really like that film. And then Riddick is (in my opinion) the best of the bunch

Mike Medaugh

I for one enjoyed the second one, I can't recall what the 3rd one is about so I can't comment on that one. I would enjoy a reaction to the second one.

Tinfoilnation

You want to have the most B.S. marketing ever for "Look! Big Name Actor!" it *has* to be Kevin Costner's "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" - which prominently features Sean Connery in its marketing. He filmed for less than half a day, got paid $1M, speaks all of six lines, and doesn't show up until the last 90 seconds of the film. He has a grand total of 52 seconds of screen time. Literally. That's not even made up.

SuperDuprEgg

his name is Richard B Riddick or Dick Riddick lol

Kevin

Do Shutter Island!

Cinebinge

we did! you can find it via the Search Posts bar at the top or via the Collections tab and look through all the tags!

Michael Green

I like the follow-ups, generally speaking; cool designs, fun sci fi cheese. Also, apropos of nothing the game adaptation was janky but also weirdly the best tie-in game ever made for a while there, lol

AgentFalcon

Chronicles of Riddick is definitely worth a watch. A bit divisive in the approach it takes, but I loved it. Way more epic and with some great supporting actors.

Mastervodo

I thought the sequels were entertaining - but not as good as this one. This is a unique film, and pretty underrated. The visuals, the color grading, a lot of the shots were just fantastic!

Mike FromOz

George your "He's got... Riddick-ulous strength" and the stare that Simone gave the camera was 🧑‍🍳🤌 (chef's kiss). I haven't seen this movie in years, and it was good to hear some Australian accents in a movie (even if they were killed off pretty quickly). Coober Pedy (Pedy is pronounced 'Pea-Dee') is also where they shot Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Anzac Day has passed (our Nation specific memorial day), but could I ask you to add "Gallipoli" to your list of films? It's really hard hitting, and gives an insight into life for Australian soldiers in WW1.

Paul Mix

Chronicles of Riddick is definitely worth watching, though a very different vibe. Kind of like the Mission Impossible movies, the Riddick movies all differ a bit from each other in tone. That said, the character of Riddick (Vin Diesel's best role IMO) remains consistently entertaining.

Odd Thomas

The sequel was 10 times bigger and 10 times worse. The third one was more like the first, it was ok. The poster for Reign of Fire was very misleading. It's a great film but the poster is lies.

HansD

Yes, the two Riddick films are also worth watching. They're not monster flicks like this one though. More general scifi.

Farbod

I enjoyed the second one. It has its issues but its still a fun watch, especially as a reaction.

Matthew Blackwood

Saw this in theaters! It’s worth knowing this was before Vin Diesel was Vin Diesel. He wasn’t in the marketing any more than the other actors, he wasn’t a thing. People went to see a (relatively) low budget Aliens knockoff, and he just EXPLODED off the screen in this role, the movie’s secret weapon. It was awesome and unexpected and it birthed the legend of Vin Diesel, Action Star (tm). The sequels are definitely *Vin Diesel movies*.

djKENTO

David Twohy who wrote and directed this also wrote The Fugitive… but I think the best movie he’s made as a director and writer is A PERFECT GETAWAY with Milla Jovovich ,Steve Zahn, Timothy Olyphant, and Chris Hemsworth. IT’s a really great thriller about a couple on their honeymoon in Hawaii. Very smart. Really well shot. GORGEOUS location and people. Would LOVE to see a reaction to it.

Gary Fixler

I can't remember the movie, but I remember there was a really funny line in the trailer, and I waited for it in the theater, and it never happened. I don't know if it happens all the time, but because the line was so good, and because I was waiting for it the whole film, I noticed its absence. It may have been Men in Tights.

Grandalf

I don't remember the ads for Pitch Black, but there was one for MAJOR LEAGUE (which needs to be on a sports or comedy poll!!!) that I still remember. It was in the restaurant scene with Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes and Tom Berrenger after Clu Heywood hit the huge home run of Vaughn. Went something like this: Jake (Berrenger): Y'know that ball would'nt have been out in a lot of parks. Vaughn (Sheen): Name one! Jake: ...Yellowstone. The highlight of the trailer and even though the scene was still in the film, it's best line was left on the cutting room floor. I think I'll try to find it on YT.

Odd Thomas

Other great sci-fi movies: Event Horizon Oblivion Annihilation Cocoon Starman

Richard Royston

This it the first of a trilogy of movies, it was just know as pitch black when it came out the the sequel was chronicles of Riddick followed by Riddick, I think The Chronicles of Riddick was added to pitch black so you would know it's part of the Riddick movies

Tay Schumaker

The sequels are fun, I think. Chronicles of Riddick really expands the universe and tries real hard to make it a whole franchise (hence the retitling of this Chronicles of Riddick Pitch Black). It doesn’t quite land, but it’s still enjoyable. Riddick in 2013 is back to more of the Pitch Black style. There’s a 4th coming

Stretch

Alcohol does eventually dehydrate you, It is a diuertic which causes you the pee more and loose fluids! Also think you judged Paris too harshly and quickly, didn't really do that much wrong before his death. Admitedly didnt do much helping but he wasnt a bad guy you seemed to judge him as straight away.

FranciscoGios

Chronicles of Riddick is my top Sci-Fi flick, it has so much content and tells you Riddick’s back story. In the third installment is just more Riddick, more Vin Diesel action pack but it’s pretty good.

Vwlss Nvwls

I absolutely love this movie, and the series. The Chronicles of Riddick is just average, but worth it for Vin Diesel, but the third movie, Riddick is just as good or better than Pitch Black. I really wish they would do an origin movie, but I am sure they never will. I remember the trailers for this when it was in the theater always ended on the money shot of Paris being surrounded and spitting the fire to reveal all the creatures.

Martin Nicholls

Second one is very different in a lot of ways, but a perfectly decent movie and if you're interested in the lore it's rammed full of it. Furya is a passion project for Vin Diesel which is why a lot of people are hyped for it - you can tell he really cares about the character, a bit like how Keanu Reeves cares about say Constantine, that he's moving heaven and earth to make the movie happen. I actually remember quite vividly when I first saw this movie, it was just after release and we didn't know what it was (nobody did really) and we just randomly picked it up. Now it's a cult classic - a couple of scenes they should probably have used practical effects rather than CGI because it was too early for using CGI for them, but it has held up well. I used to have a bit of a thing for Radha Mitchell and nothing about this movie dissuades me from that :p

Gary Fixler

Really fun to see it again so many years later! I saw it when it came out, 25 years ago (😭 😭 😭), and maybe once since, but still ages ago, so long that I forgot almost all of it, and I thought the thing you thought he did right at the end was actually my memory, but it was hazy. I'm definitely looking forward to the Chronicles reaction. I enjoyed it, also ages ago.

Aeri

Chronicles is a fun watch but completely different vibes from Pitch Black. Riddick is also good and is pretty much just Pitch Black: Again.

dys

For what it's worth I did not like Chronicles of Riddick very much. Pitch Black works as a contained, streamlined story with a clever premise, where Riddick is certainly a badass and his unique abilities are key, but he's just this mysterious guy in an ensemble cast. Chronicles tries to expand the scope out to this big space epic where Riddick is a chosen one hero but the worldbuilding feels just lame and cheap and Riddick is not a compelling enough character on his own to carry it.

Scott McClintock

Bait and switch trailer vs film of the century (at the time) Executive Decision. The movie wasn’t great but I think it was better than what would have been if it had lived up to the trailer.

Skyruff

As you can see from the comments, the Riddick movies are eached loved but for different reasons. Like the Aliens movies, each movie is a different style of movie but Ripley/Riddick is always a bad ass. Just as Empire Strikes Back is the least of the original trilogy, being third is still better the movies 7, 8, or 9. My rankings for the existing Riddick movies is as follows: 1. Pitch Black 2. Riddick 3. Chronical of Riddick

dys

Hot take: any film with Keith David that doesn't give him every single speaking line is under-utilizing Keith David. That man's voice is a warm bath for the ears.

Drew

Adding my vote for the trilogy, and the director’s cut of ‘Chronicles’

Harry Fieldson

This movie is a lot of fun, the second deviated quite a bit, but the third, just titled Riddick, is my favourite and returns to the style of this movie. I'd really like if you guys watched them all.

MacGuffinStuff

Keith David also voiced Goliath in the animated series "Gargoyles", short lived but awesome. This is definitely my favorite of the franchise, I liked the sequels, they were okay, but if you guys watch them I'll watch them again. I remember liking the world building and back story, pretty cool. "Boiler Room", it's obscure, but a great little indie movie, Giovanni Ribisi, and Vin Diesel just before this movie, same year, 2000, I think made him a name. And that name was Dominic Toretto....

REDR58

Thing is, I don’t know how they could possibly do the bats with anything other than CG?

SpankTheMonk

Annihilation was runner up on this sci-fi poll, so I believe it will be watched soon-ish.

REDR58

First time watch for me once again. Not my favorite movie, I liked Vin Diesel well enough here but for me the best part of this move was Radha Mitchell. It felt very much like a 2000s-era Sci Fi Channel TV movie. Not very cinematic at all. It looked a little cheap, a lot of the slow motion was poorly done and there were so many Dutch Angles! Lots of silly, mirrored, quick cuts. “Slam” is just short for “the slammer” (prison), I assume. How was Claudia Black using that cutting torch with no eye protection! Yikes. Yes, that was indeed Riddick blurred in the foreground. There is some odd, and oddly-delivered, dialogue in this movie: “wannabe ass”? Huh? All the glow tubes made me feel like they were wandering around looking for a rave. Or Burning Man. It’s interesting to see the concept of a Star Wars moisture vaporator/condenser actually being used in a Sci-Fi movie. I liked that. I guess that solar-powered vehicle didn’t have batteries onboard? Anyway, it was fine. Found myself getting a bit bored or distracted but whatever. Could have been worse.

Purple Dragon Knight

For 25 years, when I've DM D&D games, I describe failed perception checks as "look clear" in the same tone as Riddick. I am so happy Simone picked up on that!

SpankTheMonk

I think as a kid I new him in Gargoyles before anything else. Loved that series and I think TnGs own J-Frakes/Riker does a voice.

SpankTheMonk

Claudia Black was in the film briefly, her appearance time was cut in half by the main antagonists 🤭. She is an awesome actor - another mention to check out Farscape, but also she is a major voice actor in games and animation. Also love what Simone said about Riddick’s eyes story being a possible falsehood as I have seen the full series and I never thought of that. Please give the sequels a go!

Rupert Purcat

Another great Australian move. They are like an american movie but a fraction of the budget, so filmed differently, there like european movies but not. Also made at this time in Australia was the matrix. Wished you could have done Gallipoli (1981) for ANZAC day. Please do another collaboration with Mary Cheery hopefully on Red Dog (2011). Cheers

Shibby

I'm glad you guys enjoyed this. The Chronicles of Riddick is definitely worth checking out for a deeper dive into his character, plus it has Karl Urban you can't go wrong.

Casey Dixon

Definitely should check the other two out. Really recommend the directors cut for the second one to get more on Riddick's character.

sarCC

This is the first time I've ever read about someone ranking Empire under Jedi.

sagesaria

The only version of this movie that I've ever seen and owned is the director's cut, and seeing what I you guys didn't see, I HIGHLY recommend hunting it down if you can because there is so much there that adds to it. Primarily, there's a lot more of Johns questioning Carolyn's decisions and needling her subtly about her confession about nearly dumping the passengers, and when she confronts him about his morphine addiction he actually explains that he has a chronic injury from his first encounter with Riddick, which not only gives him motivation to rely on drugs but also paints his dynamic with Riddick as much more of a personal vendetta. Also, since I notice this moment confused Simone too; the flashlight that Riddick smashed when he was closing up the skiff was Shazza's; she gave it to him as an apology for accusing him of killing Zeke, and he almost brushed it off at first. Smashing it was basically his way of disconnecting himself from humanity again. To whit, since you asked a few times about how he knew so much about the creatures and what exactly he was, remember what he said in the opening monologue; that only the animal side of your brain stays active in cryo sleep, "no wonder I'm still awake." He thinks of himself as a beast, which is why he was able to read other beasts so clearly - he knows how they think.

Tom Hess

I forgot Claudia Black was in this. If you guys need a long-term sci-fi fix at some point, you should do Farscape. Australian TV show. 4 seasons of 22 episodes + a mini-series. I think you guys should love it. Especially George. It's good sci-fi, sci-fi that goes all the way. Completely bonkers.

FranciscoGios

At this point just watch Director’s Cut on the next two films. In the second film the Director’s Cut adds 14 plus minutes and don’t want you guys to miss some content specially since you guys are D&D super fans.

Ken

Yes, the next 2 movies are worth it to get more of the story. Very good series and I can't wait for the 4th.

Theo Bracco

The awesome Claudia Black starring in this one. You might be awed from her in TV shows like Farscape and Stargate SG-1 (8th to 10th seasons). All-round action woman. Lot of big names/faces on TCoR, but Riddick (part 3) is a better movie. Would like to see about Riddick 4.

Drew

Also in No Country for Old Men, as Carla Jean’s grouchy mama whom “got the cancer!”

Astraeos

Gonna throw in another recommendation for Chronicles of Riddick. I think both would like it a lot, but I think George especially would really dig that sci fi world. I first was exposed to Riddick with that prison game back on the first xbox, escape from butcher bay I think it was called? Then I saw Chronicles of Riddick, then Pitch Black lol. A weird approach for sure.

Mrbluegrand

Please react to the whole trilogy. I love these movies!
