The most beautiful and bizarre movie I think I’ve ever seen, next to 28 Years Later

Matthew Richson

This one movie that can make me loose my appetite…

Phil Robinson

Utterly thrilling, gross, and poignant - what more could you want? I was so glad to have seen in this at the cinema with an audience - we here in the UK are not particularly expressive in cinemas, but with this one, we had repeated squeals at the body horror, nervous laughter, and a few screams. It was one of the best cinema experiences I'd had in years. You could tell everyone was enrapt with it. Absolutely love it. Mark my words. further down the line this will be held up as a classic of its genre. And your reaction to it was everything I was hoping for.

Phil Robinson

28 Years Later was a really nice surprise. Thoughtful yet visceral - definitely one of this years best movies.

ShōNuff3K

I have a taste for scrambled eggs with ketchup.

Matthew Farrer

This is the textbook case for “I know writers who use subtext, and they are all cowards”. George’s reference to Cinderella was interesting, because this film to me is put up like a fairytale or a fable, these great big bold in-your-face storytelling strokes. I loved it and was stoked to see it on your list.

Matthew Farrer

Oh, and if you have access to the BluRay extras check out “Reality+”, a short film from the same director with the same themes but a slightly sweeter ending.

Matthew Johnson

One of the most incredible theater experiences I have ever had. Half of the audience was shocked and stoic and the other half was screaming laughing. The wildest ride. Great reaction!!

Hey Everybodyhorror! This is Sue with Pump It UP! Be sure to Like and Subscribe!

Jason Dreibeblis

The distorted way she looks at herself in the doorknob and then continually checks the mirror until she angrily wipes everything off….i have never seen a more accurate portrayal of how it feels to have a very distorted body image and a lot of self loathing. 😔 struggling with poor body image, and on again off again eating disorder, this movie speaks to me on so many levels.

Matthew Farrer

That’s rough, Jason. I hope you can get to a brighter place.

Jason Dreibeblis

Thanks! It’s ok, it is what it is. It’s just a fact of my existence, that I manage

Rev

Sue? Harvey? Did someone say SUE HARVEY?!

maikeru

oh shit :D, great, this can´t be a coincidence

Henry Sanchez

Yup you guys it’s Time to finally watch Barbarian

Marylou inProgress

Omg yes I love how unexpectedly poignant and sweet 28 years later was! Probably need to watch it again before I totally know how I feel about it but that emotional climax was [chef's kiss]

jose giron

One of the great aspects of this movie is that you can pick apart and analyze quite a lot about it and arrive at different conclusions. I think the overall message is astonishingly clear which is why imo the movie did so well but also there are parts when a lot of plp can disagree. I saw sue the exact opposite as what you guys did, I never saw Sue as the same person as Elisabeth, I always though the whole point of the movie was that your younger self can be a completely different person to who you are currently, yes they state that they are one and the same but that's just to make the point that they aren't, the message of this imo boiled down to obsession with your younger self can be poisonous, it can be toxic and even kill you, better to focus on the now. Such a great movie be sure to check out revenge if you haven't, revenge went low on the radar but it's the directors 1st big movie and it's also top notch feminist movie, love her and will watch anything she does from now on.

PIG

"The last acceptable prejudice is physical attraction." I know Sasha Coen Baron quoted it but I don't know where it comes from. It still rings in my head to this day and this movie really presses the point.

Fozzik

19:51 - 19:52 - uncensored Demi boobs. not really complaining, just FYI

Matthew Farrer

Oh nice, hadn’t thought to look there.

Kenneth thomas

Its pretty hilarious to hear "this movie is insane!" like only half an hour in lol. It's a Disney movie compared to the second half

Kron0n

Visuals aside, it's just a dark movie. Besides putting a mirror up to beauty it also puts one up to ourselves and how we literally eat ourselves alive to reach and keep unreasonable standards.

Mastervodo

Actually, you know, a St. Elmo's Fire reaction wouldn't be bad at all!

Doug Shore

all that body horror and Dennis Quaid eating shrimp is the most nauseating thing in the movie...

gfixler

Yeah, great film, great song that was really popular, and an all-star cast.

MadmanGardens

Y'all have go to do Enemy Mine. One of Quaid's best!! Without giving anything away, I hope others will back me up :)

Dwight Scarn

Saw that decades ago but was so interesting!

Angela D. Mitchell

I just didn't think the movie was very good, beyond the shock value. It's fun, but for me the premise instantly falls apart at the double aspect -- it is so instantly apparent that the Demi/Elizabeth version will have no enjoyment of the actual benefits at all and was bait-and-switched. At least Dorian in "The Picture of Dorian Gray" gets to enjoy his sinful dissolution -- Elizabeth is just shut into a closet and abused/used plus the other instant disadvantages. I just didn't believe she wouldn't instantly pull the plug. Sure, the message was worthwhile, but it was obvious from minute two. The movie then hammers us with the simplistic message over and over again. Not to mention that it feels a little hypocritical for the movie to lecture us on idolizing beauty and sexiness while it's shoving actress's body parts in our face in lingering closeup constantly. I mean, sheesh. Hats off to Demi and Margaret, but I felt sorry for them at a certain point because the camera was so insatiable and male-gazey. And at a certain point, for me the body horror became the point and not the story, and took me out of it. It was just too gratuitous and too much for me and not in ways that served the story. I did think the performances were great, but not at Oscar levels, by any means. The makeup? Sure. Oscar-level. As far as Margaret Qualley, she was a serious ballet dancer (her mother Andie was too very early on), and you can especially see her training in the superb miniseries "Fosse/Verdon," where she played Ann Reinking.

Ben from Tenn

Well that was outrageous. I was hooked on the storyline and brash style for 2/3 of it until it all just flew off the rails lol. It's as if the director tried so hard to make a sci-fi movie but her true love, horror, ultimately won out 🫠
