If you want to see your name in film check out "S1m0ne". You're the star! You're not alone in completely missing this movie, it was a dud when it came out and only became a cult classic afterwards (The Director Cut in 2008 really helped). There's a lot of thematic and even some stylistic overlap with "The Matrix", which came out a year later. Whether The Matrix copied this film, or if they instead just both drew from the same sources, is an ongoing debate amongst fans of each.

Ian Schrijvers

I always wondered how much influence this movie had over The Matrix. It came out a year before and story wise there are quite a few similarities. John Murdoch is Neo, The Aliens are the machines. Both protagonists have almost godlike powers. Thoughts??

I think you watched the right version, there is another one that spoils a lot of the movie at the start with a expositional text ;) watched the movie 10 years ago for the first time and its sadly still so unknown

overdev

movies are planned and made more than a year before they are finished, no way this was a big influence for the Matrix, also in literature there have been things like this for 100%

ShōNuff3K

Johnny's uncle was killed by the aliens in The Fifth Element 👀

The Matrix reused some sets from this in Sydney where they were both shot, but they're too close together to have creative crossover like that. There were many movies about reality not being what it seems at the time. Sometimes these things are just born out out what is going on in culture at the time.

Ian Tellam

I don't think there is much of a direct link. There are actually quite a few movies from around this time that have similar themes - with the world not being real and someone 'waking up' from it. I won't name them because of spoilers as they haven't been watched on this channel, but I can think of at least three others off the top of my head that deal with similar themes in different ways. Even things like The Truman Show share some concepts with this, The Matrix, and those others. It's more that these themes were in the cultural zeitgeist at the time - a mixture of conspiracy theories, alien 'men in black' agents, Baudrillard-inflected conceptualisations of false realities perhaps catalysed by ideas of 'cyberspace' entering popular philosophy etc.

That’s an interesting one

The editing perfectly reflects Murdoch's state of mind. In the beginning he's a blank slate, confused and knows nothing. He emerges naked from the water like a newborn. The editing is erratic and choppy like we're struggling to make sense of what we're seeing. As he learns more the editing becomes more conventional like we're starting to figure some things out.

A shoutout! Cool.

Yeah, I've never seen this cut before (heard about it, but since I'd already seen the theatrical version I never bothered seeking it out). George is right: explaining everything at the beginning, then showing it, completely ruins the pacing. And as a result, reviews all said it had great atmosphere but the plot was boring, so it did poorly in theaters, so George never heard about it until now.

Nicotti

I agree with Ian. The Thirteenth Floor came out the same year as The Matrix and had a lot of crossover themes to it.

Nicotti

Speculating what happened post movie. In the movie, the doctor says they were taken and he was shown to be an adult when he erased his own memory, so they can't be too far from where they were taken from. I think that John explored and learned more about the ship, including navigation and navigated the ship back. Although, hopefully they were taken from a planet rather than a ship

Roddrick Smith

Loved the reaction. This was a hidden gem for me back in the day. I saw this before the Matrix. Speaking of , any chance you guys might finish the trilogy?

Allan

Roger Ebert was a notable exception to the lukewarm response. Actually I think it got two thumbs up from Siskel & Ebert, but Ebert in particular was a big champion of the movie, putting it on his best of the year list and doing a commentary track on the DVD. That may have been the first movie commentary I ever listened to, now that I think about it. I loved the movie right away despite the opening narration. It didn't ruin it for me, but I definitely think it's better without it and the director's cut is always the one I recommend.

I came across this movie channel flipping late one night. For years I wanted to watch the whole thing including the opening scene I had missed, much to my dismay when I finally did.

Ben Schwartz

Another movie that came out around the same time as The Matrix is 'existenz' -- starring Jude Law and Jennifer Jason Leigh... have you seen it? Highly recommend it... it's right up there with The Matrix, The 13th Floor, Dark City, etc.

P S

Bit of a stretch putting existenz and 13th floor together with Matrix and Dark city, the writing in those was a bit forgettable, good but a tier below these

Ben Schwartz

I don't think it's a stretch at all. They all share common themes and sci-fi ideas, and they all came out in roughly the same period of time.

Also did anyone notice the flickering of the cut they reacted to? Seems like many scenes had flickering only the movie and not every scene.

Matt Blanchette

I don't think Simone can make bad-looking thumbnails.

I only remember the trailer (which is awesome) when I was a kid and it freaked me out. I never heard anyone talk about this movie like at all. Fast forward decades later I'm watching the Nostalgia Critic's review of Matrix Revolutions and there was a Strangers skit involved followed by footage from Dark City which immediately unlocked the buried memory of my childhood like a John Murdoch moment lol. The review really emphasized the idea that the studios took the subtle themes and originality of Dark City just to water it down with action to make the Matrix. Watching them back to back its almost the same movies. Same dark settings weird color tint, original scores almost match, same plot of other beings keeping humanity in a dream world to survive, protagonist warned via phone call of the arrival of a group of three men, chosen one scenario, etc. It's actually quite common for Studios to repackage projects with slight iterations like "LA Takedown" to "Heat" or "Limitless" to "Lucy" and so on.
