Aah. The Dud and Dame Diana.

Helly R

This is a good film, kind of despite Lazenby (he's ok). No Time to Die has clear callbacks to this (in the soundtrack and dialogue) and was deliberately playing with your expectations if you'e seen this one. Diana Rigg was pretty famous in the 60s - she got this role in part for her iconic role as Emma Peel in The Avengers.

JOEDATOR

You've gotta hand it to George Lazenby. As an actor, he was really, really handsome.

Robert Cooper

Worst Bond, best Bond movie before Skyfall.

oldcdog

I think Our Man Flint (1966) starring James Coburn was meant to be a Bond-style spoof. And the first Casino Royale (1967) starred David Niven and was a comedy. His character was James Bond.

Warmachine1228

There is a spoof James Bond movie called Casino Royale (1967). It stars Peter Sellers, David Niven (as the original 007 which makes sense when you see the movie), and Woody Allen. It was released 2 months before You Only Live Twice and is definitely worth a watch. There's a scene of Woody Allen in front of a firing squad that's hilarious.

Ian Smith

In addition, there was the Matt Helm series starring Dean Martin; and a completely bizarre spoof called "Operation Kid Brother" starring Sean Connery's younger sibling!

Mastervodo

We need a thumbnail/picture of Simone, bald, scar, monocle, and petting Luna like Blofeld.

It was George Lazenby's decision not to return for any more Bond movies. Somebody convinced him it was a dying franchise and he passed on returning. I think it might have been his agent? Later he expressed great regret at the decision. There were plenty of spy parodies over the years, but they didn't have quite the pop culture staying power which is why you haven't seen them. I think my favorite is the "Get Smart" TV series, which is a classic. It's not a Bond parody specifically, but a parody of the general super-spy genre.

Ca$hWednesday

Donald Pleasence might be the "iconic" Blofeld, but Telly Savalas is, in my opinion, the BEST Blofeld.

Bookwormy

A lot of people hate on this one, but I really like it for the pre-Brosnan and Dalton movies.

Ca$hWednesday

At the time maybe. I think nowadays, it's pretty much unanimously liked, and many fans of the franchise rank it highly overall.

Bookwormy

That's good to hear

Jeff K.

I have not seen that film but I'm suddenly realizing that David Niven is such an inspired choice for Bond. (I'm basing this largely off of my go-to David Niven performance, Guns of Navarone.)

jmundt33a

You have one word wrong there.

Brad Enervold

Hey guys, I'm glad you liked this 007 movie. It has been one of my favorites for years. OK, first you 2 should watch the great Documentary/Docudrama about George Lazenby and his life called BECOMING BOND on Hulu. Next I have been in love with Diana Rigg every since she was in the first AVENGERS (Emma Peel) in the British TV show in the 60s. Next, you guys should watch the great spoof of 007 movies called IN LIKE FLINT and OUR MAN FLINT 1966 + 1967 starring James Coburn. Or MURDERERS' ROW 1966 starring Dean Martin. (not as funny as Flint but still a spoof.) Also, Blofield (Telly Sevalas) was in a lot of great movies that you guys should see THE DIRTY DOZEN / KELLY'S HEROES 60s - War movies and Heroes is a comedy starring Clint Eastwood. But Savalas became best known for his TV character KOJAK. Where he sucked on a lollypop and always said "who loves ya baby?"

JGoss

Simple rule: I see a OHMSS reaction, I skip to the ending first. I've yet to be disappointed.

Zinphad

When bond drops his kilt and Ruby declared that "it's true," she's referring to the belief that Scotsmen don't wear anything beneath the kilt.

Helly R

He was also in the Commandos in WW2, though he rarely spoke about it. Not that IRL experience is necessary, but he has that in common with Ian Fleming.

P Michael Reed

This wasn't taking place before You Lonly Live Twice. It was that Peter Hunt, the director, stuck to the book, which had Bond meeting Blofeld for the first time and decided to just roll with it and ignore the prior meeting.

Jimmy Olofsson

Opinions on Lazenby are divided but many people (myself included) do rate this film as one of the best in the franchise. I believe it's also Christopher Nolan's favorite and was an inspiration for Inception (the third dream layer specifically)

Robert Gendron

The 1967 version of Casino Royale, which was a parody of James Bond with David Nivens as Bond. Zucker-Abrams-Zucker made Top Secret! in 1984 as a parody of Spy movies, if not directly of Bond. Later Leslie Nielsen stared in Spy Hard, which was a bit more of a Bond parody. So there's three for you to potentially check out for reactions.

Simon Pegged Me

I like the thumbnail of Dame Simone Rigg. Have we had a Blofeld George, yet?

Rusty Childers

This is one of my favorite Bond movies. I like Lazenby as Bond, and I really like the power of Rig's Teresa.

Jon Johns

George, watching a bullfight: "Oh, are we going to watch the cow get stabbed?" Me, with a 13 year old boy sense of mind: "George, James always... 'stabs the cow'...😉" 😂

Jon Johns

Someone must have mentioned this before, but, the 2017 "Becoming Bond" is claimed to be a "documentary / comedy" which, is kind of accurate, but off-putting. It's a fantastic documentary about Lazenby's tenure as Bond, mixed with actual footage and recreation footage, interviews, etc. tells the whole story about the man, and this film. It is funny, but only because Lazenby is funny, so, 'comedy' feels inaccurate.

Jon Johns

George, I imagine if one has only seen snow skiing in movies & TV, it would appear to be a glamorous & expensive hobby. This is because they never show the 'common folk' vacationing at ski resorts. I've been in ski vacations many times in my life, and I don't think I've spent more than $500-$750 all in for a couple days of skiing. You can stay at cheap motels, or, go with a group of friends and split the cost of a large cabin with 3-4 bedrooms, shared kitchen, etc. ski equipment rental is fairly priced, lessons are sometimes free! The resort makes its money off "extras" like food & drink, and souvenirs, but mostly for 'lift tickets' which grant you the use of the ski lifts which brings you back up the mountain after you've stumbled and fallen, and slid down it on your butt. 😂 Lift tickets are often the most expensive part, like $45-$100, depending on the resort. I loved Lake Tahoe, because there are 3-5 resorts, catering to specific patrons, one has a fantastic half-pipe for boards, another is very family friendly, one is for the danger-seeking 'pro' skiing crowd, etc etc. the family friendly places are much less expensive. I spent a week at Lake Placid NY (is that close to you?) that was the home of the winter Olympics once, so it has everything available for pros, but it's also a great family friendly resort, and very affordable. New Mexico has some very affordable small resorts with unreal vistas from mountain tops looking at deserts all around. Utah, too has family friendly, cheap resorts, both big and small. Cross country skiing is fun, and easy, like a hike in the mountains, but less exhausting. It's only a snobby hobby in movies, and TV, it's really just a fun beautiful thing to do in vacation!

Matt Blanchette

This is one of my favourite films -- it's the one that made me a Bond fan for life when I was discovering the older films in the wake of "Casino Royale", but it's also a fantastically well-crafted picture, with a lot to recommend about it. :-) The poetry in the dialogue alone!

CappyZed

So glad you enjoyed this underrated gem. The director was an editor up to this point, this was his first time in the chair, which accounts for the oddly experimental feel. There were endless Bond parodies over the years, most have been forgotten (as the hugely overrated Austin Powers will inevitably be in decades to come), but one of the most famous may be the Get Smart series. The more recent film version was unexpectedly good too.

dudewheresmycar

Close three way split this week! We getting a Sunday Book of Eli??

Michael Nemo

Easily in the top 3 of all Bond films.

Matt Blanchette

The director is also the only confirmed queer Bond director -- I think that makes the difference, too. He's got an incredible sensibility; he knows EXACTLY what he wants to do with Bond, the villains, and the heroine.

JoeNotCharles

It's important to remember that Sean Connery was practically unknown when he was cast too - Bond made him a star. So having the new guy be another unknown wasn't a big change. After Lazenby didn't work out they started casting people with well-known TV roles, to thread the needle between someone recognizable but not already a movie star. (Until they changed the whole pattern with Craig.)

JoeNotCharles

I'm really annoyed that I can't find Get Smart on streaming anywhere - it was a great show!

JoeNotCharles

She was actually the second female partner in the Avengers - the first was played by Honor Blackman, who played Pussy Galore in Goldfinger. You should watch a couple of episodes of it, at least one with Blackman and one with Rigg. It'll give you a new appreciation of the environment these Bond movies came out in: Dr. No didn't start the spy craze, it was all over TV before that. The Bond movies were just the slickest and biggest budget ones, not the first. The Avengers first season came out a year before Dr. No, and Roger Moore's show The Saint's first episode aired the day before Dr. No opened!

JBK405

I recommend checking your local library if they have it on DVD. Mine has the entire series.

Bill P

Love watching your 007 series journey and thoughtful comments. Looking forward to the rest. BTW - what do you think about the music soundtracks, especially the early John Barry ones He wrote most of the first 14 007 movie soundtracks and not only created the James Bond sound, but he also created the whole spy movie genre sound.

Darren Harrison

After Lazenby refused to return for a second movie, the producers hired American John Gavin to play Bond in "Diamonds Are Forever". Just before filming, however, Sean Connery agreed to return for one last movie. The producers insisted that Gavin be paid in full for the three 007 movies he had been contracted for as if he had actually made them.
