Boyan Konov

Great movie. Fantastic performances and a heartbreaking story. Hoping for you guys to check out Network someday.

Fritz

Can't wait to watch this after work. Been too long. Such an important movie.

Joe Williams

You guys should definitely watch All The President's Men if you haven't already.

Clevelaannd

Does anyone know if they have a gaming channel 🤔 would love to see them play games and talk split screen or something lol

Dale Smith

I don't often see people watch and discuss this movie, and this is one I've gone back to a couple times. I saw this in theatres completely blind and it stuck with me. Very important movie in my opinion.

John Richard

This is a true story George based on the actual Boston glob spotlight team who broke this story

two pennies no waiting

Haven't gotten to the movie yet, just floored George doesn't know Dropout. It's been here the whole time.....

Justtired

25 minutes in and I’m like “I have an idea. Instead of all the guessing from the poster, let’s just watch the movie!” Just kidding! Love you guys

Darren Harrison

I think Simone is trying to remember the term "digital footprint"

Sean

Fun fact, this was directed by Tom McCarthy, aka the guy who plays the dodgy journalist in S5 of The Wire

This movie, while tough to watch, is one that I truly believe everyone should see. I’ll admit, it hits me on a very personal level. Growing up in South Boston in the 1980s, all of us kids seemed to know someone who had been impacted by the perversion of these men—either directly, or like me, through family and friends who were abused. In my neighborhood, it was an open secret that abuse was happening, but back then, the Church was seen as infallible by the adults. For me, it was my cousin John, who lived outside our neighborhood, and my buddy Mike, who lived one street over. John was abused for two years before taking his own life. In his suicide note, he exposed Father Frank Kelly. Mike, much like Patrick (the survivor interviewed by Mark Ruffalo’s character in the film), struggled with drug abuse for years before eventually dying of an overdose. When The Boston Globe broke the story, many of us who grew up together got together for beers, shared tears, and for some, a bit of long-awaited relief. Growing up when and where I did turned me off religion entirely. By the time the movie came out, I had been living in the South for over a decade and had long since stopped trying to explain to people why I didn’t attend church like so many here do. After the film’s release, whenever someone asked—or pressed—the issue, I would simply tell them to watch the movie. Some still had questions, but almost everyone came away understanding why I feel the way I do. A couple of random facts: I’ve actually been slapped by two priests. The first time was when I told one to “go play with his little boys” in front of a few hundred fellow Boy Scouts at Camp Squanto. The second time was after John’s death, when I told the priest conducting his service that there was “no God” after what had happened to him. And, on a lighter note—Ben Bradlee Jr. (the deputy managing editor portrayed in the film) comes from quite a journalistic family. His father, Ben Bradlee Sr., was involved in two major, world-changing stories: Watergate and the Pentagon Papers.

Smooticus

Condolences for your cousin's suffering and your pain.

Smooticus

Excellent movie and a must watch.

Sam

They have a few old gaming videos of Simone playing some stuff but I don't know if they are still on the channel as I think those didn't really do well as they didn't do them for to long. Currently they aren't doing any gaming content I'm pretty sure.

JayF

I can already tell from the preview pic this hit you both hard. I'm glad you watched it though. It's an important one.

Inkpendude

The worst part about this movie... is that the list at the end only got bigger

Tcrimson05T

So I haven't watched this reaction yet, but I remember where I was when this report came out. I was a sophomore in high school. I went to a private Catholic School from second grade until High School graduation. Uniforms, nuns, priests all that. It didn't surprise me. I remember hearing weird stories about some of the teachers and adults around me. Even had a couple of people actually arrested because of similar antics depicted in this movie. One was my religion teacher. It made me reassess all the interactions I had had with the adults around me when I was a kid growing up. Question a lot of interactions I saw & brushed off. I went to a private Catholic School in Dayton Ohio. Which was under the jurisdiction of the archdiocese of Cincinnati which was implicated. Even before the report I heard stories and interactions that colored my viewpoint of the Catholic Church and it's schools and some of the people supporting it. And this is still happening by the way. You can look up stories not long ago about for example what the New Orleans saints (NFL team) did running PR for a church that was accused of some pretty scandalous things that happened long after this report came out). So anyway, looking forward to the reaction. It's a really good film and I'm glad you're both watching it.

theycallmekev

I love this film! Such phenomenal writing and acting and everything you want in a political charged thriller. Jason Robards won an Oscar for his role as Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee in All the President’s Men (1976), a film about the reporters who exposed the Watergate scandal and took down President Nixon. Funny enough, years later…Ben Bradlee Jr., the son of Ben Bradlee…was portrayed by John Slattery in this film! I always thought that was a cool little trivia of family connections between two films that deal with investigative journalism. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein earned the Pulitzer Prize for uncovering the Watergate scandal, while the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team received the same honor for exposing the widespread child sex abuse within the Catholic Church.

Max Carter

Really glad you guys did this film, I think it's vital viewing for everyone. Obviously the subject matter is as tough as it gets and it is emotionally draining but I've always found it strangely rewatchable too. The pacing, writing, music and performances are all absolutely perfect and make this as close to a flawless movie as I can think of. I think one thing it does particularly well is show how ingrained the Catholic church was in Boston. It really was a major force over the whole city and was an integral part of the lives of literally half the city so it's hard to overstate the impact this story had there and in other places around the world. My heart goes out to all the victims past and present because this story is not done sadly

Baron Imhoof

This, "Good Night and Good Luck (2005)," and "All the President's Men (1976)" are, in my view, the three best movies about real reporting and journalism ever made. Thank you for the reaction.

Matt Blanchette

Every actor in this film ought to've gotten Oscars. EVERY one. Even Len Cariou!

Greg Johanson

One of my favorite movies of all time. I get disappointed when it reaches the third act because I know it’s almost over.

Spacedone

I saw this in the cinema and the reaction of everyone at the end of the film was pretty much the same as yours, a stunned silence. I was so pleased it won the Best Picture Oscar. When this only came 2nd in the poll I was at first annoyed (because it's a REALLY good film) and then I realised it was probably for the best because if it had won it would have been released in the same week (and I guess recorded at the same time) as the Ghorman Massacre arc of Andor. That would have been a really heavy week for you both :D

Philipp Roensch

I can only make jokes like: Great for Halloween, you hate to see it. It is an amazing movie, one of the best document films. Came out just as I was quitting the protestant church, so this hit me in a good mood. Other good document films: All The President's Men (1976) The Report (2019)

Ben Stevens

tough watch but such a great ensemble performance. i see now why this got rallied for so hard in the poll.

p0sthum4n

Never seen nor even heard of this movie, but two minutes in and damn, what a cast. John Slattery? Michael Keaton? I'm so in. Edit: Liev Schreiber too? Christ. Edit Edit: Stanley Tucci?!

M.C.G

The director and co-writer of this film, Tom McCarthy, also wrote and directed the excellent Peter Dinklage vehicle The Station Agent; well worth adding to the list I think

Ste Rawlings

I'm fully aware that it's super weird because of the subject matter but this is somewhat of a comfort film for me. I'm not sure exactly what it is but my best guess is it's the score and the methodical nature of the film.

Polecat21

when it came out in my city (not the movie - the story), I remember the response was a little mixed (at least at first). once I was outside a church waiting for my nieces. A reporter came up to the church because one of the priests that was outed was from the church. He was just seeking comment from the parishioners. A couple of the parishioners started yelling at the reporter and the "vile press". What was really sad was the response from the church. they had the priests (during the homily) address it by using the "few bad apples" defense. I think that actually started turning the tide against the church. people starting getting outraged that they were ignoring the main issue which was transferring these priests to other parishes where they could start all over and keep the abuse going (especially since they were unknowns in the new parish)....

Polecat21

I also remember when the story broke thinking "I guess we all owe Sinéad O'Connor an apology"........

Brandon

Am I the only one that is constantly mixing this movie up with 'The Post'? 'Conclave' would make an excellent follow-up movie to this.

p0sthum4n

"In general, the film was positively received by the Catholic community. Before its release, Cardinal Sean O'Malley of the Archdiocese of Boston issued a statement in the archdiocese's official newspaper, stating that the "media's investigative reporting on the abuse crisis instigated a call for the Church to take responsibility for its failings and to reform itself—to deal with what was shameful and hidden." O'Malley had not seen the movie at that time but planned to do so." On November 9, 2015, a review in the Catholic News Service called the film a "generally accurate chronicle" of the Boston scandal, but objected to some of the portrayals and the film's view of the Church. On the Catholic News Service, auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles Robert Barron said that it is "not a bad movie", as it shows how the wider community shares the responsibility for sexual abuse committed by priests, but that the film is wrong to insinuate that the Church has not reformed. Vatican Radio, the official radio service of the Holy See, called it "honest" and "compelling" and said it helped the U.S. Catholic Church "to accept fully the sin, to admit it publicly, and to pay all the consequences." Luca Pellegrini on the Vatican Radio website wrote that the Globe reporters "made themselves examples of their most pure vocation, that of finding the facts, verifying sources, and making themselves—for the good of the community and of a city—paladins of the need for justice." In February 2016, a Vatican City commission on clerical sex abuse attended a private screening of the film. Following the film's Best Picture win at the Oscars, Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano ran a column assuring that it is "not an anti-Catholic film", and Vatican Radio revealed that clerics in Rome have been recommending the film to each other.

Matthew Johnson

One of my favorite movies, and truly one of the best examples of “friendship movie”

Matthew Johnson

I saw a talkback after a screening of this movie with the writer and Sacha Pfeiffer (whom Rachel McAdams played) and they talked a lot about the experience of the investigation and the accuracy of the movie. The thing I remember most from that talkback is how Rachel McAdams performance was an uncanny recreation of Pfeiffer’s real speaking voice and cadence. It was like seeing the exact person I’d just seen in the movie, except with a different face. It was spooky good and also really subtle - I think McAdams is incredible in this film.

Dazzler & Em

Just to agree with many of the comments, this is one of the most difficult film to watch but in terms of writing, directing and acting, it deserved all the plaudits it got. Im glad the patrons voted for it.

punterjoe

I agree with George about loving "competency pron". Yeah, this is a rough watch, but an important story. It's nice to find an instance of systemic corruption that's finally exposed and generally condemned.... though denials and cover-ups still persist, they're only fooling the willfully ignorant at this point. I also agree with Simone's observation about the sad state of journalism's decline since the time of this movie. BTW, the Globe building featured in the film (a landmark for generations) has been renovated into gentrified shops or condos (not sure which, it's been years since I've been to neighborhood, but it was under renovation when my workplace practically next door moved too). Great film. Great reaction. Good luck getting ANY of this on YouTube - considering the hot-button subject matter. 🤞

Lycowolf

This, The Big Short, and Dark Waters(also starring Mark Ruffalo) are part of my personal trilogy of movies I love to watch that enrages me.

Tay Schumaker

The gasps that went out in the theater when the list of names came out in the end is something I'll never forget

Luca Spurgeon

Phenomenal movie and one everyone should watch! I enjoyed taking the ride with yall on this one. Its a very heavy and emotional watch, but done so by a cast and writing that knock it out of the park and keep you locked in from start to finish. With this being another big and heavily watched reaction, I cant help but suggest "Charlie Wilson's War". An incredible true (not based on - this is another, like Spotlight, true and by all accounts accurate portrayal of the events) and still relevant story, with a VERY stacked cast including Tom Hanks, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Julia Roberts, Amy Adams, etc... With an A+ Sorkin screenplay about "competent" (you'll understand why I put that in quotations if/when you see it haha) people doing competent... and I quote, "These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world..." - Charlie Wilson

Opti_Frog

A predator is awful. Hundreds of predators that are protected by one of the most powerful and influential organisations in the world is something else entirely.

Florian

Regarding Michael Keaton, I would like to throw "Birdman" in the ring

Matrim

I went to Catholic school in one of the cities in that big list at the end. This movie hits very close to home. I’m very glad it’s so excellently done.

Polecat21

Their reaction to the movie was quite different than their reaction to the story.

DonkyDave

Great great film and so glad you watched it

2026-09-05 05:00 Teachers have taken over now. Not a week goes by without a story of a predatory Teacher, usually female too, taking advantage of a student.

So, this was a very good movie, but I always felt it completely robbed The Revenant for Best Picture that year. Still, an enjoyable watch! I mean, not enjoyable, but, you know. Yeah.

Jaaahn

they didnt 'take over'. predators have always been there in every part of society. only difference is teachers union dont have the money for cover ups unlike the church, the presidency and wall street.

James O'Sullivan

I know what you mean, it seems a surprising undiscussed film. I was so glad to see it come up because no one I know (other than my family who I watch it with the in cinema) seems to know about. I'd put it up with Schindler's List as a difficult film everyone should watch. And not just because the scandal's important to never repeat, it's the importance of real investigative journalism that we cannot let die.

PIG

They haven’t seen The Insider yet!

Stanley Etienne

Good movie, but do you think they would ever make a movie like this exposing the film and music industries? I don't think they would. Hits to close to home.

Neumann

god i LOVE this movie and this story. i usually don't go for movies like this (if i'm watching a movie, i'm generally gonna go for something i'll have a good time watching and 9 times out of 10, serious movies likes this are NOT fun to watch) but this is legitimately one of my favorites, a movie where everyone is smart and contributes something, and it's written ,directed, and edited fantastically. i love how locked in you guys were from the very start, and i know from simone's look of slow, dawning horror just from the opening that ya'll were in for a rough ride i use it as a reminder of several things, namely what journalism can and SHOULD be (god, how far it's fallen), and that the situation STILL hasn't been addressed. i know people are giving the church props for taking a firm stand against trump and the rise in extreme conservatism and christian nationalism, and i don't want to discredit that because that genuinely is great and so important and the general direction they've been moving in with the last couple popes has been promising, but i'm not about to laud them as heroes, they STILL need to be held accountable fyi, i remember when this came out and the spotlight team the movie was 90something% accurate with the only real overdramatization being mark ruffalo's freak out

dys

I was born and raised in Massachusetts (though not near Boston) and I was in highschool when this came out, and it was the first big news to grip the public attention in Massachusetts since 9/11. My family isn't Catholic but my mom's best friend (whose kids were close friends of me and my brothers too) was and this devastated her. Random coincidence but I lived in Shirley, MA for a few years about a mile from the prison Geoghan was sent to, though this was years after he was killed.

MapleResolve

Oh Simone, you needed a hug during that one. It's a fantastic film and deserved its Best Picture win. If you're looking for a similar film starring Mark Ruffalo: Dark Waters (2019). Highly recommended.

Jesse Coombs

Even crazier, he played the reporter who was making up stories in season 5 of The Wire.

John

It might be the Bradlee connection. The Post heavily features Ben Bradlee Sr. It is also a film I would recommend about journalism

Kelly Pickard

For future consideration… Movies: - Waking Ned Devine (1998) - The Devil Wears Prada (2006) - Hook (1991) - The Birdcage (1996) - Margin Call (2011) - Legend, Director's Cut (1985) - The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (1994) - The King's Speech (2010) - Flash Gordon (1980) - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) - City Slickers (1991) TV: - Batman: The Animated Series - Disney's Gargoyles - Barry (Max)

Ste Rawlings

The guy who wrote and directed this ironically played the world's worst journalist in season 5 of the wire.

beecroft adams

Margin call and the kings speech are great films. Gargoyles would be fun.

Ricardo Alanis

There are many great movies but very few that I feel are truly important. This is an important movie is also masterfully executed from a story-telling standpoint and has phenomenal performances to boot.

Mad About Stories

So happy you did this movie! One of my all time favorites. Such excellent writing and directing and editing and acting and.....

photos_by_geoff

Possibly the most powerful mlvie that you both have reacted to on this channel. Schindler's List & Shawshank comes close, but I put this one at the top. Not even because of it being the latest you've done or knowing someone who was a part of this scandal. Thanks for going thru this emotional roller coaster and I hope more people get to see the entire reaction, not just the shortened YT version. Can't wait to see you both laughing again. I think I am going to rewatch the South Park movie reaction or Simone's Zootopia DMV scene to get some joy back into my mind before I go to sleep tonight. 🙃🎃😎

The opening off-topic question, my essential phone apps: Bitwarden (Password manager), Google Auth, Bank (sadly 2), Insurer (hate it), Cinema chain, food delivery, Google drive (that all the same login though). Some games, I love Monument Valley, The Room, Unciv and Roller Coaster Tycoon on the go.

Nathan Burgess

Unfortunately the movement of priest was very much alive in the 1990s. I went to a Catholic high school (Salesain College Sunbury, (Melbourne) Australia if you want to look it up) and several infamous priests 'taught' there. A student in my year level took their own life, we only found out much later his reasons as they were covered up, and several classmates took to drink and drugs, introduced to them by priests as part of the grooming process. Lives destroyed. As for the movement of priests to hide the situation, definitely happened. One of the Salesian priests was flown out of the country at short notice (less than 6 hours) after a tip off he was to be arrested (someone in police force). He went on to teach younger children in a poor south pacific nation. Some of these stories can be found on a website Broken Rites (I don't know if still exists anymore as I haven't been able to read for over 10 years now, it's too tough). These incidents are now more widely known in Australia following a Royal Commission. But before the RC it was reporting, like what is covered in this film, that started people and more importantly police and Government officals to start asking questions. The moment in Spotlight where Michael Keaton's character Robby says "I guess we were just lucky the priest didn't coach our sport" really hit home. I know a lot of my classmates have the same experience watching this film. While I prefer watching you react to non-reality films, but movies can be important vehicles for letting people learn history, especially the message about what happens when you have unquestioned authority over individuals with little or no power (children, poor, marginalised). Thank you for reacting to this movie and hopefully letting some know it exists and what happened. Take care everyone. Looking forward to Star Trek TNG S3 next week for lighter entertianment.

Nathan Burgess

Basically the same thing happen at my high school in Australia. This was a world wide pattern, especially the cover up.

Matt Blanchette

...Amy Adams was not in "Spotlight". :-/

punterjoe

Point taken. ...Except maybe Reg Barclay... 😏

PIG

WIPE THAT SMIRK OFF YOUR FACE!!!

m

And Thank You For Smoking, right? The entire investigative dramumentary subgenre has a couple of nice movies for sure.

m

Movies definitely can do that. For me it's Django, just real enough while properly stylized (with that "hunt" for the bad guys playing a huge role of course) to not quite make me look away. Band of Brothers is a huge one, watched that show to death, True Detective... if you infuse even the worst material with some sort of detached, heightened realism, you might very well start falling contently asleep to the sound of shells destroying Europe. Good movie, definitely tracks.

Gibson Mark

In a February 2016 piece that Marty Baron wrote for the Washington Post about the experience of seeing the movie Spotlight get made, Baron praised the film and especially Liev Schreiber's performance: "Schreiber portrays me as the newly arrived top editor who launched that investigation, and his depiction has me as a stoic, humorless, somewhat dour character that many professional colleagues instantly recognize ('He nailed you') and that my closest friends find not entirely familiar....Journalists worldwide have now seen the movie, and they've reacted the same: This movie is stunningly accurate in how it portrays the practice of journalism, investigative reporting in particular. As for my own portrayal, I would have to be quite the grouch to complain. The screenplay honors me, as does the restrained, nuanced performance of Liev Schreiber, an exceptional talent." Schreiber later returned the compliment: "That is one of the proudest moments in my life, is to have made Marty Baron happy."

Jpsynergy

Incredible but very difficult movie. I also recommend Dark Waters for another Ruffalo true story type film.

John

He’s great in Almost Famous and it’s definitely worth watching

PIG

lol

Anamondaris

Hard movie too watch but I also think it’s important to watch. Like Requiem for a Dream☹️

Cartoons ReAct

actually there are unforgivable sins, people thinking you can just ask forgiveness in good faith are wrong as that never assures your sins are cleared

Luca Spurgeon

If you like Billy and think hes good in these, you'll love him in what, IMO, is his greatest role... and that would be from the movie, 'Rudderles'. Willam H Macy's directorial debut and Cruddup knocks it out of the park in a movie that will leave you with a Sixth Sense type shocked feeling by the end.

Anthony.Smith

In 2021, France released a report regarding around 330,000 children having been abused by the French clergy since 1950. It honestly amazes me how anyone can associate themselves with an organized religion. It's one thing to be spiritual. It's one thing to call yourself a "christian" because that's just the word you use to describe your belief in your personal god. It's another thing to go to church, blindly follow priests in how they interpret the Bible for you, believe it is a source for good in every conceivable way, but most of all, to respond to any horror that happens in the world - including this mass molestation of children - with "God has a plan for us all. He works in mysterious ways." So God's plan included millions of children being molested? Sounds like a shitty fucking plan. As at least one other person recommended, you should watch Dark Waters also with Mark Ruffalo. I cant honestly say seeing that film change my life; helped me put words to feelings i had ever since I was a child.

Thomas Cunningham

"The Post" and "All The President's Men" are other great newspaper movies.

Jonathan Eaton

I lived across the street from Cardinal Bernadine when he was accused in 1993. A couple months later the accusations were recanted and the story went away.

Shaka Racks

I was a victim who survived and was awarded in a class action judgement in a city. And I dont have to work the rest of my life but id trade every dollar to never have met Father Hern. I can't believe you guys did this movie but im glad you did this movie. I didn't watch it for 2 years. And I had a substance relapse when I did watch it. But this should be mandatory viewing bc those rat bastards still exist and its not just Catholics who hide behind a cross and exploit n harm y Children.

XeonAlpha

Also The Normal Heart. Man that movie wrecked me…

XeonAlpha

So another true story movie with Mark Ruffalo I’d highly recommend is the Normal Heart. Lesser known because it was actually an HBO movie and not a feature film but it’s very much worth a watch.

Angela D. Mitchell

Great and thoughtful reaction, Simone and George, and Simone, it was so sad seeing your reaction to all those cities and locations of abuse. Really upsetting to see so many, but so moving to see you react that way (I definitely get it). It's such a good movie, and the entire cast is so quietly good. I love how devastating it is without being prurient. We understand what happened, but we don't get the usual up-close grotesque child abuse scenes most movies would choose to include. We just find out the facts and are horrified right along with the reporters. As far as facts go, Spotlight did a good job in the big picture, but it did get some stuff wrong -- mostly for dramatic purposes. The movie's biggest questionable move was its treatment of lawyer Eric Macleish (played by Billy Crudup), implying that he went along with much of what we saw, when he was an advocate for victims and verifiably worked on their behalf. (Along with Globe reporter Steve Kurkijian, who is presented as being against the story when he was one of those who pursued it earliest.) Macleish wrote a really classy social media post years back saying everyone should see the movie anyway and he was proud of what it tries to accomplish (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/go-see-film-spotlight-even-my-character-dead-wrong-macleish/). Macleish ends with: "I want to be clear that I do not fault the Globe reporters in any way. I continue to have contact with them on important stories and they are outstanding journalists. I cannot believe that Mr. Robinson or any member of the Spotlight team would claim that I was uncooperative or that I was motivated by money. It was not in their book “Betrayal” which Spotlight is based upon. Nothing close to what is portrayed about me in the film ever happened. I wanted to help the Globe in any way possible. The investigation of Archdiocesan priest abuse should have started in December of 1993 when I first reported it. But I am so glad that the Globe ultimately came around and the Spotlight Team deserves all the credit in the world."

pinkdino99

Thanks for doing this one. Very important subject matter.

pinkdino99

George "Is the church really that powerful ?" Who do you think funds the Heritage Foundation = Project 2025 ?

pinkdino99

More John Slattery - Mad Men. This is an outstanding TV show. Very you guys. More like this - Michael Mann's The Insider with Pacino and Russell Crowe about the nicotine industry whistle blower. All The President's Men - Robert Redford. Dustin Hoffman. Watergate. Hey, maybe in 30 yrs we'll get an Epstein movie !
