I’m so glad you guys finally made it to season 3. The first 2 seasons were like a difficult labor compared to the rest of the series. And season 3 starts pretty strong too.

TomGas2025

To quote the Wolverine: Lets Fucking Go! I wonder...hav you ever watched Babylon 5?

ChiefKC

Now for the good TNG episodes.

Raven Dark

So, have you guys decided to only two two episodes a week for this season, or was that just for this week? I'm not complaining, I'm just curious. Oh, also, are you pausing to do other things after season 3, or will you do more than one season of TNG before you move on to more Star Trek movies or other shows?

Cinebinge

we did 3 episodes each week for S1 and 2 because of the overwhelming desire for us to get to S3 as soon as possible. it was never meant to be a permanent schedule increase, so now that we've reached the season fans are excited for, we've returned to regular sustainable pacing :)

Raven Dark

Ah. Cool. Well, it just means we get to enjoy TNG with you guys for longer. :D

Brandon

I find this happens with every big fandom and I would argue that Star Wars, Marvel etc. are just as bad. I'm kind of baffled by what Star Wars fans expect people to know before ever seeing a single movie.

Matt O'Keefe

Finally, Data does not have the way too noticable emotions he showed in seasons 1 & 2. He is now classic Data.

Michael Bauer

At least a higher density of them. Measure of a Man is an all-time favorite on many people's list.

Matt O'Keefe

In terms of improvement of the uniforms: it is all about the adding of the collars to me.

Danny Bryant

So George, tell me you watched scrubs, Without, telling me you watched scrubs. KELSO!!!

Lintrinsic

Season 3 is kind of a watershed. It's where the quality started ramping up, rather than instantly being fantastic. Behind the scenes Maurice Hurley left, so Patrick Stewart petitioned for Gates McFadden to return and won. Michael Piller joined the show and switched from the three leads and supporting cast, to character focused storytelling. As a result it became a true ensemble cast and meant that they could do group scenes the first couple or so days, then the scenes with the leading characters for that episode and give the rest of the cast a little time off. This made the schedule a little less grueling than previously with everyone on set during filming days.

Lintrinsic

I hate it when people make what they think are subtle clues, but that anyone could guess what they're driving at. Or stress some minor thing that turns out to be major "What could that mean? 🤔" But to be fair, it's not just Trekkies, Whovians are just as bad, if not worse.

Lintrinsic

As for the uniforms, apparently Patrick Stewart's chiropractor or or osteopath wrote a letter to the production team saying the lumbar strain all the men in the regular cast were experiencing due to long hours in spandex jumpsuits would do permanent spinal damage, and sniffing a potential lawsuit in the wind the studio redesigned the uniforms. If you look carefully, extras are still in jumpsuits with collars added.

Max

I fear that the transition to DS9 will be a bit jarring. There are no remasters for DS9, VOY, and ENT, I think.

William Willis

I didn't go to school with Wil, he was being schooled either on set or at home, I did go with his brother Jeremy (We weren't friends, I just knew who he was). People would see him get picked up by Wil. I don't know if there was any "nerd" opinion about him since he had done other work before. Just that he was a well known young actor. In Southern California, this was just something people knew. There was always someone who was in a current commercial or something like that. And while sometimes people would talk about it, for the most part, I think we were all being the "cool kids" by acting like it was no big deal. Looking back at how I thought at the time, it just seemed like "hey, there's this person with a cool job" and I didn't really tie any strong feelings to it.

Mastervodo

HAHAHA! DATA STREAM! HAHAHAHA!

Forsythe

Did CingeBinge explain why this is only 3 episodes instead of batches of 3?

GAB

The next two episodes are even better - with some people placing them in the list of top 25 TNG episodes. As others have previously mentioned, I also recommend watching 326, 401 and 402 in one sitting. They can be considered a story trilogy.

Lintrinsic

I don't know. While it works as a binge watch that's nothing like the experience the original audience got. And that's kind of a spoiler that it's a cliffhanger.

Lintrinsic

Yes, scroll down. They were doing more to get through the first 2 seasons.

Lintrinsic

The picture quality for DS9 isn't ideal to modern audiences, but is nowhere near as bad as TNG was before the remaster. The picture quality seems to improve with each show and I'd rather the original was used than a fan upscale TBH.

Phosphorus

Am I the only one having trouble hearing the conversation between George and Simone during the opening theme? Using a voice mode on a browser extension helps but overall I find the theme covering much of the conversation. I can either make the theme really loud or the conversation really quiet, neither of which allows me to make out the conversation well.

John Rose

Those lines were probably over dubbed because of the water in the background.

Lintrinsic

No. They decided to use a different actor's voice.

Lintrinsic

From memory alpha - "Gosheven was played by Grainger Hines, though his voice was dubbed by an unknown actor. At his request, his credit was removed from the final episode. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., p. 101) After filming was completed, it was decided that Hines' voice didn't have the presence the producers wanted in the episode – they thought it sounded too much like John Wayne. [1]"

John Rose

you are right I should have looked it up before commenting, I just noticed that most of these lines were near the water feature. "Gosheven was played by Grainger Hines, though his voice was dubbed by an unknown actor. At his request, his credit was removed from the final episode. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion (2nd ed., p. 101)) After filming was completed, it was decided that Hines' voice didn't have the presence the producers wanted in the episode – they thought it sounded too much like John Wayne.

John Rose

beat me to it ,lol

Jomero

Only two episodes? Aw nuts! I guess I'll have to wait another week for the reaction to The Survivors. One of many stand-outs in Season 3. :-)

Henchmen21

Okay so here are some of the changes for S3. New Intro: Gone is the sweep out from the solar system to going throughout the galaxy New Uniforms: No more spandex one piece. Now it's a wool two piece (say hello to the picard maneuver) New Hand Phasers: They redesigned the hand phasers from the ones that had been nicknamed "dust busters" to the more angular ones But most importantly: the return of Dr. Crusher and behind the scenes a whole new writing staff headed by Michael Pillar

Henchmen21

Also, Geordi got another promotion between seasons. He's now a Lt. Commander instead of just a Lieutenant

gfixler

This feels like a fancy remaster, but then, I grew up out in the middle of the woods, with antenna TV with terrible reception. I watched a lot of TNG as it aired through the snow of bad reception. Sometimes the sound would oscillate in and out, so I could only hear parts of what was being said, just sitting there with a pained expression on my face for the entire hour, straining to hear or see anything. It was never perfectly clear, though most of the time I could see and hear fine. Then one day, after years of this, I went to my dad's house across town and watched an episode. He had a bigger, fancier TV, and cable, and I was absolutely dumbstruck by how gorgeous it was. Made me sad I hadn't been visiting him for TNG the entire time. I did go over all the time, just not during the TNG time slot. I say that, but I didn't bother again, because it was just an inconvenient time, but I did plan out seeing the final episode of the series, during the original airing, so I could watch it there. I remember being nervous that something would break, like cable would be out or something, and I'd miss it. Kids today don't know the struggle of aligning your life with the TV.

Joel

Yes, I would say these 2 are pretty representative of the season as a whole, with the notable exception of 2 much later in the season that are truly spectacular, not stating which or when in the season

Ea-nāṣir, the worst copper merchant in history!

Regarding the conversation during the opening of episode 2. Sub Rosa is not the worst Star Trek episode ever, in my opinion. It is, however, the worst TNG-episode. Star Trek Voyager season 2 episode 15, called Threshold is the worst Star Trek episode ever. In my opinion. Whenever you're rewatching, this episode should be avoided at all cost. Sub Rosa might be bad, but I find it cheeky fun nonetheless. Threshold is just bad at a level I don't understand how it ever came through production.

DasBigUn

interesting change in where you put the video of the show.....making it in the center rather than the bottom

Robert Cooper

It's always fun to see Picard be a petty bitch.

David N

Computer run a diagnostic, is anything wrong with you? Nope your imagining it :)

mpd

50:03 is why I subscribe to you guys, your enthusiasm is infectious

Max

I think the difference will be noticeable, but for me they're also perfectly adequate. I just really like the stories and the characters, especially of Voyager, my favorite Star Trek show.

Paul Verburg

No, you’re not the only one. I think overall the sound of the show is a tad too loud compared to the commentary, but it is most noticeable during the opening theme.

StonyD

S3, this is where TNG is made. I personally think S4 is peak TNG. But this is where it starts imo

PJ P

Getting more glimpses of why Picard is the creme de la creme of captains. Even the way he casually checked in on Geordi and O'Brian. He made his point known, got his face to face answer and left without needlessly restating the goalpost.

Guts

Nooo ... just 2 episodes 😪

Temba His Arms Wide

Scott Grimes who plays Steve Smith in American Dad, Malarkey on Band of Brothers, and Lt. Gordon Malloy in The Orville (a Star Trek parody show) makes an appearance in the first episode Evolution. It's uncredited because the scenes where he spoke were cut or changed (can be found on youtube) and ultimately you can only see him (mostly just his distinctive red hair) in the background of the final scene at the table with Wesley and his friends.

ChiefKC

There were a handful of good episodes in Season 1 & 2 including "Measure of a Man" and "Q Who". This season certainly more and I can't wait for them to reach the season finale.

Jpsynergy

Star Trek day :)

John

Yes, the Enterprise can hold 15,000 people in a pinch. They'd be housed in bunks in all the cargo bays, but they'd fit.

John

Gosheven was overdubbed because they thought the actor sounded too much like John Wayne.

p0sthum4n

As an enormous fan of baseball, I love mocking the guy's speech about knowing all the great games in his head because he knows all the statistics. What a doofus. Get on the holodeck and watch some baseball you fuckin nerd.

Matt O'Keefe

Simone you will not lose your Trekkie card over not remembering every episode of TNG. As a 50 year old 40+ year fan of Trek, I say you are fine. There are relatively few story arcs on the show. The show is mainly episodic. I do not remember every episode. I am sure there will be plenty you do remember. There are more big memorable episodes coming. I remember a lot now because I watch other reactors who are doing the show or have done. But there have been a few times where I barely remember a specific episode or forget it totally.

ExquisiteCapybara

quick note on the no-sync version: the 2nd epsiode is in th middle of he screen, not as usual at the bottom. thereby it obscures the "nuke the whales" poster. not sure thats intentional but also no big deal.

deskmerc

A minor note: This particular shuttlecraft is named "Onizuka", which is a bit of heartwarming. All the shuttlecraft in TOS and TNG are named after explorers, scientists, and Challenger crew.

Darin Foat

A lot of the dialogue in Ensigns of Command had to be re-dubbed because of the sound of running water from the aqueduct in the town square. The actor who played Goshevin wasn't available to do the dubbing, so all of his dialogue was re-dubbed by another actor, even the scenes with clean audio.

WastedPo

I always assumed that Gosheven's lines were dubbed because he was constantly standing in front of a running fountain set. So it would've been impossible to get a clean recording of the actor's line delivery using a conventional boom mic.

James W.

I wish people wouldn't hype up season 3, it does a disservice to the show as a whole. It is a more consistently good season but it has its fair share of duds as well. When it comes down to it, out of a full 20+ episode season, you get like maybe 5 or 6 stand-outs and then a bunch of solid episodes that are at worst fun to watch. Every Trek show after TOS takes a couple seasons to get its identity. I think it is good to temper expectations in that department, especially for a new watcher who doesn't have nostalgia goggles to bondo up all the uneven parts.

Shaka, When the Walls Fell

I used to have a Family Guy mobile game. In it, you could unlock every character that ever appeared on the show, some as special events, and that included Star Trek TNG crew. Those characters included Counselor Troi. Whenever you tapped on any of them, they would say a line from the show, or something related to it. When it was Troi, one of her lines was "Why is my uniform tighter than everyone else's?" The Sheliak meeting was the first thing that came to mind, where her uniform was boldly going... places.

CT

Sub Rosa IS ridiculous, but I fucking love it!

michael denny

First of all, George your shirt is amazing and unfortunately has been deemed heretical by Ecclesiarchal dogma and by the authority of Adeptus Arbites you have been sentenced to Servitorship. However, you will be assigned as a reaction servitor so little will be changed. Please remit yourself to the nearest Adeptus Mechanicus facility for processing with the next 10 to 200 solar years. Have a glorious day in the name of the Emperor! Secondly why do I always mix the beginning of this season with the End.

Dave Hampton

It is a long way away, but Sub Rosa is not even in my bottom 5 episodes of TNG. The worst is the one you just watched ending season 2.

Angzarr

Yeah, I noticed that a terminal screen (I think it was in Wesley's room) that was clearly a flimsy vacuum-formed thing, and not cut quite cleanly. That would have been impossible to tell back in the day, when it would have looked like impressive futuristic hardware!

Angzarr

...aaand Mrs. Turkleton!

James W.

Right on, I think it is where it finds its footing.

MacGuffinStuff

Just finished first episode, good one. I did laugh because it reminded me of a true story I heard Mr Ballen tell, about a kid, teenager, a Boy Scout, Eagle Scout, who built a nuclear reactor in a shed in his backyard. Check it out, but I think I remember the basic facts, kid had a chemistry set in his bedroom, started a fire, so his parents told him to keep his experiments in a shed out back. Kid decides to try to build his own nuclear reactor, obviously you can't get Plutonium or Uranian, but there are these very common devices in most homes back at the time, that each contained a small amount of Radium. Smoke detectors. So aside from being smart enough to understand the chemistry and engineering aspects, he was also clever enough to concoct a clever ruse that has manufacturers donating so many smoke detectors he was able to harvest enough Radium for his reactor. It was not fully functional when there was a sudden spike in a specific geographic area, a small town, of medical cases involving symptoms of radiation poisoning (including cancer) and the frequency and intensity pin pointed, this kids backyard shed. I don't think he ever activated it but how crazy? To me the funny thing is his parents just being like, "Okay do your experiments son, just not in the house." And that reminds me of REAL GENIUS, a movie from the 80s I highly recommend, very fun, baby face Val Kilmer is so funny, Uncle Rico is in it, so is the prick from Ghostbusters and Die Hard 1 and 2. The first scene (second actually) is this 15 year old kid, a genius, at a HS science fair trying to explain his experiment involving working lasers and a new fuel source to his not genius parents, and his dad says, "So... it talks.?" "No, Dad." Great movie, so funny, aged very well I'd say.

MacGuffinStuff

Hell yeah, Happy Star Trek Day to yous as well! The quality of the FX, the crispness all that, markedly better, but I have to address the uniforms. I knew it. That's padding BROlin, Josh! They said the new uniforms were just more loose fitting and that's why they look different from the first two seasons, BS, either the dudes all got into a weight lifting program between seasons or they have padded shoulders and chests. I'm m not mad at it, they look great, but not letting Wikipedia gaslight me 😂 either that or they starched the shit out of the uniforms so they were so stiff enough to maintain that Dorito shape, which is possible, we used to starch our uniforms when I was in the Army just so the creases would stay razor fuggin sharp all day, several days, it was like wearing cardboard pants.

Simon Pegged Me

I know the overhyping makes me nervous. I always fear a subconscious backlash from G&S. Last week, when everyone was dragging Final Frontier through it and praising The Undiscovered Country, all I could think was they are going to hate UC. I hope not.

GAB

The fact that 326 is titled part 1 is even more of a giveaway surely?

David Crabtree

Another new addition beginning in this third season are the looser two-piece uniforms.

LazyBoy Stays Up Late Watchin Video Tapes

302 According to Memory Alpha, Grainger Hines' dialogue as Gosheven was dubbed by another actor. At his request, Hines' credit was removed from the final episode. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 2nd ed., p. 101) After filming was completed, it was decided that Hines' voice didn't have the presence the producers wanted in the episode – they thought it sounded too much like John Wayne.

Robert Carter

The big question is, will Simone be treating herself to the recently announced Lego model of the Enterprise D (with minifigures of the TNG crew included)???

Steve Arnold

Don‘t know what I liked more about the second episode: George noticing Troi’s cameltoe or Simone failing to do Data‘s hand coordination test. 😂🤣😂

LazyBoy Stays Up Late Watchin Video Tapes

302 - I like data's comment at the end "I guess I have learned to be creative, when necessary" as it is referring to his performance on his solo away mission

John Smith

I also would like S&G to react to Real Genius. In spite of its obvious flaws, it is still one of my all time favorite movies - it has a wonderful theme.

John Smith

"I would leave the colony just so I wouldn’t have to hear Goshoven talk about his dead grandfather buried on that mountain." Yes... I too have known people like this.

John Smith

I think the tech manual says up to 6,000 comfortably (i.e. with everyone getting their own room) and up to 15,000 in an emergency (i.e. we need to evacuate everyone NOW and we'll worry about sleeping space later). The problem in "Ensigns", of course, was a lack of shuttlecraft to transport everyone up to the Enterprise in a timely manner - presumably the transport ship on its way had plenty.

John Smith

I disagree. While season 5 is very good (and season 4 is also quite good), I'd rate season 3 as the best of the seasons. It has only three episodes I'd consider 'below average' and between five and eight that I'd rate as 'top quality'. A couple of them could even be rated as 'legendary' - seeing how they still get talked about/referenced today. The rest are mostly 'above average' in my book.

John Smith

Maybe a bit spolier-ish? Instead of naming the future episode, perhaps just say "a particular Voyager episode that everyone knows about"? (edit) I do agree about the VOY episode, though, as long as we're just talking about TNG/DS9/VOY. If TOS or TAS is included, then there are other episodes that deserve consideration as 'the worst ever'.

John Smith

He's one heck of an engineer, apparently...

John Smith

Yes... but the question is at what point do they notice that fact? If they don't look at titles until the day of filming, then this still would count as a spoiler.

TomGas2025

Gosheven is dubbed over...

Jobbe Smit

Sub Rosa is indeed hands down one of the cringiest episodes. Gonna be fun watching you guys having to watch it.

Jay

No. Simone and George are much smarter Star Trek fans than Target Audience. I am sure they will thoroughly enjoy UC.

Jay

There are some pretty good "fan" cleanups out there if George is willing to sail the 7 seas.

Jay

Dangit I am feeling really dumb. Just watched the episode and have no idea what he would say that would be "crass"

Elisa H.

🤔 Sub rosa? *Goes to Google 👀* ... Oh.

Rumpus Parable Art

Thank you!!! I'm only now working my way fully through these and I am at the comments here looking *specifically* for what in 302 (and then vaguely back-referenced in next week's talk now that I'm on it) is the wardrobe thing with Troi George and Simone where talking about..... I had to make a guess it was something like that after noticing nothing breast related..... What brightness, size, and honing eyes action is the deal here hahahahahaha? I'd assumed it as I'd not been able to see anything overt. You comment answers it for me. Thank you! Even now, knowing it, I have gone back to where it got mentioned in 302 and I have replayed it disturbingly too may times and still have no idea how that was scoped so fast.... frankly, with my glasses on, screen highest brightness, full-screen, and WAY TOO FOCUSED on that part of Troi's body rather than the scene I still largely have to assume that it is there because others have said it! The mystery is solved, though, and I feel better. I can move on with life hahahahaha. The hand coordination thing had me cackling. I genuinely think that was my favorite part of that episode.... show and reaction!

Rumpus Parable Art

I've been unreasonably excited to see the Picard Maneuver come into play. I haven't watched these shows in years and years now and it just delights me that that fun detail will be in the running background.

Ian

And the name of that eventual nanite planet? Cybertron!
