It’s happening!!!!!

newhastings

Lets go!!!! Also for important context the pilot was shot a year prior to the rest of the series, hence why AJ is visibly older, the priest character gets recast, and Tony changes from “the boss” to “kind of the boss because the real boss has cancer”

Reid Mclellan

20 years in the can I waited for this

Ciarra Jade

I’m so excited for this.. I’ve never actually seen it 🙂

Jordan Hume

I will say that the first two seasons of the Sopranos are probably the worst two seasons, especially the first season. It's one of the few shows that gets better and better as it goes along though, and James Gandolfini's acting in this is just absolutely incredible.

Dragonhunter

I think the sound of the show is missing in the "no copy needed" version

Rob

Yeah must be a glitch, hopefully they can fix it. The audio kicks in after a few minutes so it's all good

Jordan Hume

Two things: Yes, we all knew it was about mobsters (the Jersey mob by the way, who always felt like they were a lesser version of the NY Mob families). Also George, at least on the Cinebingers website, there is no show audio in the left ear. We only hear the two of you from the left ear, but we hear you and the show out of the right ear. Stereo audio might have gotten messed up.

Jordan Hume

It's only missing in the left ear. Put your right earbud in and you can hear it.

Jordan Hume

Wow, I've watched this series like 3 or 4 times now and I never even noticed that. Cool trivia!

Young Blood Priest

It was advertised as what happens when a mobster needs therapy

SbE

George, a few of the actors from the Sopranos voice the mafia guys in the Simpsons S18E01 where Lisa befriends Fat Tony's son, Michael, who wants to be a chef

Cinebinge

it appears to be completely fine on our end. both ears. the first episode begins with no sound during the intro song part, that is intentional. but other wise, its working completely normally for us.

Dragonhunter

Oh, yeah sorry you are right. Should've checked further into the episode.

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

I forgot about all the weird inconsistencies in the pilot lol though I get that that’s how Tv worked and was a lot more common in the 90s. Can’t wait to get deeper into the show!

Potsi

Gabagool

newhastings

the goodfellas reference is especially funny cause melfi and chris’ actors were in goodfellas

Jordan Hume

Yes. I recently rewatched the show with my son who hadn't seen it before. It had been a long time since I'd watched it and, as I was watching it with him, I realized how rough the first season was. It definitely took them a while to get going. I promised him it would get better and he stuck with it. Now we're almost to season 4 and he's really enjoying it. But he almost quit a few times during the first two seasons (especially the first as you pointed out).

FWPJR.

Finally, the day has come. It’s Sopranos day, I can’t wait to watch this reaction.

Happy Hanukkah

"The Sopranos 101-102" Huh? You're just skipping the first 100 episodes?! :-P

maikeru

no way you said paulie is greek 🫢😄

blerbaberpaterb

that scene always confused me. like if a person said "THESE italians", then i would assume the speaker isnt an Italian.

Carlos H

Woke up this morning, got some gabagool 🎵

Jef Etters

Can’t wait! I like Sopranos, I’m not one who thinks it’s the greatest show of all time like some people, but I am very excited for this journey!

Deco

Tony's mum is so funny, she nails her part. she played frank drebbins boss in the original naked gun

dc

One of the best shows in the history of television. It ushered in the Golden Age of TV. Silvio Dante (the one that scares Simone) is actually lead guitarist in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band!

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

I heard a funny thing about this show that shows how well it's written when it comes to how realistic it is. While this show was airing, when the FBI was investigating people tied to organized crime and listening into their phone calls via wire taps and that kind of stuff, they would often hear these criminals (alleged criminals, I should say LOL) talk about this show. They seemed to really like the show, were impressed at how much the show got right vs just using your overused mafia cliches. They would joke about how the writers of the show must have their phones tapped, or about how one of the writers must have been fresh out of the mafia and in witness protection with a new job as a TV writer.

dc

Oh…just curious why the intro song is muted? I presume for technical reasons. I may have to watch my own copy since the show doesn’t feel the same without it! So glad you’re watching the show!

maikeru

I'd also prefer it with the intro song, with the audio turned down a bit so we can hear them talk.

Darren Harrison

When I was a high school exchange student living in the U.S. in the early 1990s, my Sicilian-American host family's grandfather was very proud of his Mafia history. I didn't realize this (thinking my school friends were pulling my leg about their background) until I attended a wake in Kansas City, which looked like it was a scene out of "The Godfather". He was so well known that when my host-brother was picked up for hitchhiking in Kansas City (apparently it was illegal) and the cop let him go when he asked on the way to the police station if my host-brother knew anyone in Kansas City who could be contacted to which he responded, "Yeah, my grandfather is ______". The cop's face went white, and he let him off with a warning. LOL

maikeru

maybe he meant the italian americans, born on US soil, but also forgetting that he himself, paulie, is also one of them

Cinebinge

no can do unfortunately. it being such a famous and pre-existing song (as in outside of the show with its own labels/ownership) just doubles the risk of DMCA. the videos themselves are reactions to the show, and the content is commentary and review to each episode. but not the song, which both is and isnt part of the show. in that it existed on its own before the shows creation and we are definitely not doing reviews of teh song every single time.

GaryJerryLarry

The "R" in the title is a pistol... It was not a secret that the show involved the mafia.

Nathan Jasper

Rewatching this show now after watching my grandmother devolve with dementia, it's hitting home in a lot of ways. The difference is Momma Soprano is still sharp and has awareness but she has moments of forgetting which leads to bad outcomes vs my grandma whose quality of life diminished beyond caring for herself, even unable to dress herself. God bless my mom who took care of both her father and mother with the assistance of hospice nurses. It's difficult beyond words to watch your parent wither away mentally and physically.

newhastings

With all the wire talk i cant believe yall missed the guy whose gun misfired is Bodi!

Collinson

There was a longer than normal gap between the pilot and first real episode so they changed things up in that time.

Jim Johnson

Not George thinking Paulie is Greek lmao

Logan Kerlee

I super enjoyed these with you two! I've never actually watched The Soprano's before so this is a first time watch for me as well. I'm stoked to be seeing this with you both! :) Super enjoyed the introduction to everybody! I'm really excited to watch these characters develop, grow and change throughout the series. :)

Logan Kerlee

lmao, yeah. I knew what The Soprano's was ages ago when this was new. I was a kid then and it was obvious to me.

Ca$hWednesday

Yes, it is a real strip club which ironically got busted recently dude to "mob activity". I recall the late, great Anthony Bourdain was there with Marky Ramone on one of his travel shows back in the day.

dc

I figured it had to do with that! Thanks for the explanation!

JoeE

Tony was trying to sing whiter shade of pale by procure harem. The actual version is great. The song was inspired by the Canterbury tales

Andrew R

I was unaware that Patreon filters for DMCA. Strange decision to mute the intro on the uncut, unedited version of The Sopranos. It's like reacting to Sesame Street but blurring out big bird.

JoeE

In the coffee shop, paulie was saying that the mob should be making money off the coffee shops since the fancy coffee drinks are italian

Jim Johnson

It's funny that Goodfellas exists in universe because so much of the cast was in that movie. Melfi and Christopher are the biggest ones but there are many others.

Cinebinge

so the DMCA isnt done by Patreon, but rather studio in this case both HBO AND whatever publisher owns the original song, uses bots to scan for content that includes it. if it were a unique song made for just the show, then its part of the content we are reviewing and commentating on. but in this case since it existed before and is a standalone music creation, it would get its own copyright scans and claims and so on. In your comparison with Big Bird, that is a character that is solely from that show. Patreon has no control over this as they are just a platform, they have to allow publishers and studios to do these kinds of audits. As such, we have to take out the song or risk one random day, random episodes or worse yet the entire catalogue of this show being forcibly removed solely because of the song.

DannyDarko

Hello, is there anyway to turn off the subtitles in the no sync copies or not have them at all?, they are distracting and now they are all in caps lock as well, I prefer watching everything with No sync required versions now but would prefer no subtilties or have the option of turning them off if possible? thanks & I really appreciate all the different versions you provide.

Dylan Thomas

As someone that watched this show when it first came out yes we all knew it was about mobsters and fat tony was not a reference to this show he appeared in 1991 on the simpsons this show didnt air until 99

Patrick - Excelsior

Big pussy is the guy that was helping Christropher throw the body in the dumptser, he was also going around with Paulie to find the car thief at "Starbucks" (which was miss repeated as Buttfucks". Paulie is Italian. He upset about things like Cappacino and Expresso being stolen from his culture by non-Italians. FYI The actor that plays Paulie, Tony Sirico, before becoming an actor, was arrested 28 times for various crimes including robbery, assault, extortion, and gun possession. He was convicted twice, serving a 13-month sentence in 1967 for armed robbery and a 20-month prison sentence in 1971 for felony weapons possession and extortion.

maikeru

not only that, a mafia family would't care about laws and own what ever kind of weapons it wants

mpd

Can't believe George said "nursing facility" at 2:05:27, it's a RETIREMENT COMMUNITY!!

Dioskur

This show lost me when I first watched it but I will give it another go, hope it grows on me this time

Todd

I had no idea.

Sumner Hayes

Thinking Fat Tony might be based on Tony Soprano is a logical guess, but he's not—Fat Tony debuted in 1991, just over 7 years before The Sopranos first aired. Fat Tony's based on a mix of sources, primarily Goodfellas and the Godfather, and is named after Anthony D'Amico (the sound mixer for the Simpsons in the early 1990s).

Jonathan Eaton

We need the subtitles for when G&S are talking over the show.

DCray

He didn't say "these Italians". The line was "Fuckin Italian people, how did we miss out on this?" Then lists espresso drinks that originated in Italy as well as Italian foods and said they invented it. He's an Italian in a trendy American coffee shop with no Italian workers and the cashier is yelling out Italian words for their orders of Italian coffee so he just felt offended I suppose.

Jonathan Eaton

Referring to Henry Hill doesn’t mean Goodfellas exists in this universe. Henry was a real person that became an informant.

elias rinis

I agree, subs are necessary, for me at least

p0sthum4n

Goodfellas does exist in this universe.

p0sthum4n

I'm so excited that you guys are finally watching this. It's my favorite show of all time, and it's such a unique slice of a time in America that is never coming back. Shows like Breaking Bad owe their entire existence to The Sopranos.

DJ Gonsalves

I have been so excited for this since G&S announced it. I love this show I watch it over every year or so. I’m looking forward to this one!

Jonathan Eaton

I’m just pointing out that what George said isn’t true. Referring to Henry Hill isn’t the same as referring to Goodfellas.

blerbaberpaterb

....except he is right so what he said IS true. because Goodfellas exists in this universe. i swear some of the people is only here to tell S&G theyre wrong, for some weird sense of superiority. they'll find the smallest throw away thing said and proclaim it "WRONG" because it isnt perfectly phrased or stated in exact wording.

Young Blood Priest

I thought he looked familiar. I also forgot mike Epps was in this episode.

Kyle Baker

I will point out that it's very funny that Goodfellas exists, and yet nobody says anything to Melfi, Chris or Paulie. :D

Joe

Imagine thinking Paulie is Greek. He's so, so Italian.

p0sthum4n

Same, couldn't be more excited. Half the Patrons right now are like "What, no fuckin Stranger Things now?"

Jonathan Eaton

George points out that “they could care less” should be “they couldn’t care less” so I thought he might appreciate it being pointed out that just because Henry Hill exists doesn’t mean Goodfellas exists. And to me, by saying it does you have told them something not yet revealed.

JBK405

WooooooOOOOOOOO! I am ready for this ride! George, you're largely correct with a remark you made at the start. "The Sopranos" is credited with kicking off "The Golden Age of TV". It wasn't the first 'serious' TV show in history, but it was the first show to get the RESPECT equal to films and literature. The serialization was new to a lot of USA viewers who were used to plot-of-the-week stories, and the acting, directing, and cinematography were all high quality. it also 'broke barriers' in having a villainous protagonist, since beforehand it was thought that audiences wouldn't be able to follow and sympathize with a criminal for a show's entire run (For example, Vince Gilligan has explicitly stated in interviews that they never could have made "Breaking Bad" if "The Sopranos" hadn't shown that they COULD). FYI there's a going to be a bit of a cultural disconnect between this and most TV shows you've watched that are set in "America", because a lot of it is steeped in the specific subculture of New Jersey (And more specifically north-east NJ). Many shows could be relocated without changing the story, but they could not have set 'The Sopranos' in New York unless they made a different show. Throughout the series there are references to local celebrities, famous regional attractions, etc. You can pick up most of it through context clues (It is a very well-made show), but some of it is inevitably going to fly by under the radar. To give you the broadest of broad-strokes, NJ is the state that immediately borders New York City to the west. Northern NJ is frequently described as being in the "shadow" of NYC, and American pop-culture is absolutely FILLED with jokes at its expense. If Tony is The Boss of NJ, then he's a big fish in a small pond...at least, that's what people say... One of the stereotypes of NJ is that it's filled with nothing but Italian gangsters -- the other is that it's filled with nothing but oil refineries and toxic waste. As with all stereotypes, neither are accurate, but NJ was one of the major destinations of Italian immigration to the United States in the early/mid-20th century. 15-20% of the population still claims Italian descent, so much like New York City it's impossible to extract Italian-American culture from the resultant society.

Tits McGee

They call Big Pussy and Little Pussy that because they started as cat burglars so cat, pussy cat, only logical step is step is “Pussy’🤷‍♂️ It was inspired by real life Genovese mobsters John and Anthony Russo. The Russos were cat burglars and they were nicknamed Big Pussy and Little Pussy. David Chase was funny that two gangsters would use such ridiculous names so he put it in the show.

photos_by_geoff

Simone mentioned Turtle from Entourage in the intro! Funny thing happened to me years ago. I was being told by my friends that I was the actor's twin, but I had never seen the show or any images of him before. Once I saw some images online, I thought we looked enough alike that it would be funny to submit to a look-alike website. After entering a photo of him and then a photo of myself, the website responded with an unexpected message. It said, "Your submission is invalid. You are supposed to submit a photo of you and the celebrity. You are not allowed to submit 2 photos of the celebrity. Please resubmit and be sure to submit a photo of yourself next time." This made me a huge fan of turtles in general but also a fan of the show. Thanks for mentioning Turtle Simone! Brought back some memories of being mistaken for him in some clubs too. LOL

Gee

Silvio (the guy with the incredible range of Al Pacino impersonations) Is Steve Van Zandt he was the lead guitarist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, he's credited with helping write the riff for Born to Run and co produced many of Springsteen's albums. He's written and produced songs and albums for other bands as well as opening for and touring with bands like U2 and Bon Jovi.

BangDroid

How useful are they when they're not only missing words but misspelling, jumbling and butchering lines. And these are the official copyrighted subs from HBO lol

p0sthum4n

@Kyle Baker There's also the "Mayor of Munchkin Land" in season 5 being played by famous Italian singer Frankie Valli, who is himself directly mentioned in season 4.

p0sthum4n

One of the most popular lines in the show ("A don doesn't..." etc) was allegedly said to James Gandolfini on the phone by an anonymous caller who called him from a blocked number.

Erik D

As you surmised, the show is not really about the mafia, that is all scene setting, it's really about family. And as you say, people are conflicted, the show is best viewed through the lens of everyone's character being two people in conflict with one another.

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

Oh that's interesting, I didn't know that. My head canon is that guy from the blocked call was watching the show with his wife and when the line was said he was like "Honey! Honey! They said it! They said the thing! They said the thing I said! Did you hear that, they said it! Where's the Gabagool?!!!" XD

p0sthum4n

Interestingly, in episode 2 when Tony almost collapses in his mom's house, that's the one and only instance of studio archival music in the whole show.

PIG

The Sopranos is about mobsters like The Wire is about the police. It's so much, much more.

Polecat21

now we have to get them to watch The Commitments

Relic

"My mother told me I shouldn't even come in today." The idea of a gangster calling in sick is pretty funny.

Lanny Fisher

You've seen Lyvia Soprano (Tony's mother) before. She was the Mayor in Naked Gun (1988).

Ben Stevens

no fighter jets without a pilot's license and a few million either :sad trombone:

Robert Carter

Yeah it was something like 18 months. Enough time for Jamie-Lynn Sigler to have her nose done and for Father Phil to change actors

Hank Scorpio

Not just season 4. Frankie Vali is mention throughout the show in multiple episodes and seasons (He Italian and from New Jersey)

Hank Scorpio

Pussy and Paulie were in it also (and some characters that haven't been introduced yet)

Hank Scorpio

The R being a gun was intentionally done because test audiences thought the show was about singers lmao, so they made the R a gun.

Hank Scorpio

Yeah the 1st episode was filmed in late '96/early '97, while the rest was filmed in 1998 (released in January '99)

Lomino

P Fat tony predates the sopranos by like 8 years so no the simpson didn't based him of Tony soprano, Its just a generalization of a mobster

Donna Castellano

They just got to S3 which is my favorite season of ST. And I was like, "That 💩 can wait. One of my Top 5 shows is starting!!"

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

I bought them on a black Friday at Walmart for $20 each ( I think it was 2006?) just before season 6 part 2 came out. I hope they didn't degrade 😕

PIG

“Oh, someone’s getting married? Oooohh wonderful... just see what happens, Tony. See what marriage does to you!” (lol joking. Congrats George, that's great news!! You seem like a really good guy and I'm really glad for you!!")

SFI

Episode 2nd a funny one. Also has the only example of a scene before the credits

Nuclear Reactions

I really, really needed this tonight. I can't wait to see you both get into my favorite series of all time!

JH

Simone, George… just remember the Mayor in the older Naked Gun Franchise… lol

JHaze

George’s love of Lord of the Rings got him calling the twin towers, the two towers and I love it

Relic

Frankie Valli also plays mob boss Rusty Millio in several episodes of seasons 5&6.

Twiska Brand

I know, right? Stargate SG-1's pilot was way different from the final show. Its pilot had female nudity in it, but they ditched that for all future episodes to get the age rating down. But it isn't just 90s shows. Breaking Bad, in 2008, also had full female nudity in its pilot, but not any future episode.

Mastervodo

For those who like Jamie Lynn Sigler and/or Rob Iler, they have been doing podcasts the last 1/2 decade. The first set was called "Pajama Pants" and 2nd set is "Not Today Pal" with YMH Studios.

Snuggelbum

holy shit, here we go!

JoeE

I would also recommend sing street

DannyDarko

Maybe they can add an on/off feature in the player so people can have the option, with subs or without.

mcfierce24

It's from GF III, correct?

Alex Hyrule

A former Mafia Captain when talking about this show said if a boss was discovered to be speaking to a therapist both him and the therapist would be in the boot of a car by the end of the week.

Ned Warbone

I found this difficult to get into the first time because I expected a serious crime show. Watched it again as a comedy and it was a much easier show to enjoy.

Cinebinge

hi bietz, to the two of us, discussing and sharing with each other what we think might happen IS how we enjoy things. In our eyes enjoying a show and having theories/guesses are not mutually exclusive, no different than water cooler talk of "what do you think is going to happen?". if we are right, hurray for us, and if we are wrong, then its a pleasant surprise. it is simply how we like to engage and enjoy things.

bietz

fair enough! <3 totally respect it. I should've been clearer. Of course when an episode is finished i encourage all of the speculation. regardless, i'm not the tv police. i've always enjoyed your reactions. i sincerely hope you love the show.

Jacob King

Going to recommend Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, it’s the best cinematic portrayal of the New Jersey mafia.

james repka

I didn't know about Chase writing for The Rockford Files. Did you notice that in the "retirement community" scene in the pilot, the Rockford Files theme song could be heard from the TV room?

Matrim

Fat Tony from the Simpsons predates the Sopranos by nearly a decade. He’s just an Italian- American mobster stereotype.

KnittingHaven

Bodie from the Wire!! I can't believe I recognized him from that short scene. He was the one who couldn't drive the truck and then dropped his gun.

Dowly

Overarching story lines had definitely been done before Sopranos. Babylon 5 was among the first to do it in early 90s. (and you should watch it. It's like Star Trek, but good! :P )

Holdenk

I probably missed it, but why is the intro muted?

TJ

Fat Tony from the Simpsons was created way before this show.
