The Enemy, The Price

G&S, have you noticed that the opening isn't just random space imagery? It tells a story.

WayneC

Nice to see that Geordi got a promotion to Lieutenant Commander. You would think promotions would have been shown, or announced.

Thall

All I wanna say is, aside from Great Reaction as always: If you find the Romulans aggravating I can't wait for you to meet another, as of yet unknown, specific Star Trek species! They did a fantastic job of making the "Dolores Umbridge" of alien species, lol

megamoo chilli

If you like the marooned on a planet with enemy story and want a whole movie like that you should watch Enemy Mine. 1985

Mastervodo

Star Trek Day! Who knew Troi and Crusher were so bendy? I did, because I've seen that episode a few times.

Lintrinsic

There's something that has always bothered me about The Enemy. As soon as the Romulan states plainly he'd rather die than have the transfusion, the debate should be done. Because Beverly wanted Worf to see the patient, rather than preserving anonymity it gave him the opportunity to withdraw consent. Medical ethics should have rendered the whole thing moot. Had the transfusion gone ahead under those circumstances, instead of a dead Romulan, they'd have a live one yelling that he's been violated by forced medical experiments and polluted with Klingon cells. They could probably legitimately accuse the Federation of war crimes. It could potentially have equal ramifications to his death.

Meanwhile, in Space....

It's always baffled me that "The Price" ends with all parties seemingly agreeing that the wormhole is useless if it's only stable at one end. For studying the galaxy, it's arguably MORE valuable for going to so many destinations. Even if you're only sending out probes.

dudewheresmycar

There's a Wolfgang Petersen 80's sci fi movie that has a similar concept to The Enemy which stars Dennis Quaid called Enemy Mine. that would be an interesting movie to into future a sci fi poll?

gfixler

Oh, I really needed Star Trek Day. It feels like the last one was weeks ago.

Data Cable

Two promotions in as many years, between seasons

Anthony Villena

Looking forward to George seeing Over the Garden Wall next Halloween

Data Cable

If George thinks that's the greatest scene ever seeing at his age now, imagine first seeing it at 14, in the pre-internet era. Regarding the perils of dating a Betazoid, allow me to present this little ditty, by Star Trek tribute band Warp 11: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fS4zw1S_DY

Lintrinsic

I'm sure Troi had that leotard on backwards.

Brandon

Me realizing I somehow skipped Trek last week, so now I get 4 episodes to watch. 😅

Eversharpe

One of the first films I remember watching as a kid and I will always love it. The alien is played by Louis Gossett Jr.

David Szoke

Once you see it yo cannot unseen it. When it start with "Space..." look in the ring stars and the outside ring stars.

David Szoke

I believe this episode (2nd) s related to a Voyager episode

Paul McBryde

have you guys ever noticed that your names combine into GEOSIM

Ian Tellam

Well they do say that it's only a matter of time before both ends become unstable.

Ian Tellam

They definitely struggled a bit with giving Troi interesting things to do, and Marina Sirtis has talked about this in the past. It didn't help that Guinan took some of her purpose away when she got introduced as a the ships 'confidant'. But she does get some good episodes, especially in later seasons, and I still think she's a good charater, just a bit underused. The Price may be my least favourite episode of S3, mainly for the same reasons you state with the negotiator just seeming unreasonably sleazy from the outset making the whole premise of the episode feel weird.

David N

Costumes are good, Over the garden wall is good, Star Trek is good.

Robert Elliott

Good reaction to some average episodes. Dressing up sounds great and George has to be a Vulcan, of course.

gfixler

After that opening scene with the replicator, I was really hoping The Price was going to be Deanna having to pay for her rash actions with the wormhole delegates, after learning they were from a species made of chocolate and eating them.

Spacedone

I one day hope we can get them to watch Babylon 5 just so they can see the scenes between Londo and G'Kar. Two actors bringing their A-game.

Patrick - Excelsior

Google "Brinkmanship - the art or practice of pursuing a dangerous policy to the limits of safety before stopping, especially in politics."

gfixler

Leyor, the really tall alien, was played by Kevin Peter Hall, who was also the Predator, and Harry, in Harry and the Hendersons. He died in 1991, at the age of 35. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001310/

Dan

The second episode does point out Troi's position. It wouldn't really make sense for her to be a bridge officer if she was just ship's counsellor (Dr Crusher isn't). Clearly her main value is reading other parties, and it rather makes it look like calling her "ship's counsellor" is a bit of a fig leaf for the Federation that likes to think it's extremely honest and above-board.

Alternatively, you can also go straight to Cinebingers.ca, if you have Sync with your own copy toggled (and it will stay toggled that way), every video listed has a "Copy Link" button next to it. Pressing that will give you the URL.

Brian Moore

The Enemy is such a fantastic episode. If you guys haven’t seen the movie Enemy Mine yet, it’s definitely worth watching and you’ll see how it inspires this episode. The Price on the other hand is one I tend to skip. The Troi/Crusher workout scene gets tossed around the internet so often I don’t feel like I need to see it during the boring Troi romance story.

Phosphorus

I thought the same thing, that it is still a wonderful/useful discovery. (At least you have a stable point in space to send in probes for now, even if data may not arrive back to you for decades, and that it is only temporary.) Some might even relish the chance to discover a new part of the galaxy with no way to get home, and that's even before we consider species that have longer lifespans. I would interpret it as the discovery rendering the wormhole relatively worthless, as opposed to being completely worthless. The bidders were all preparing a package of assorted resources on a planetary level as offers to begin with, but the discovery now means a chest of gold-pressed latinum for its use (or something like that). I can imagine a parallel to someone selling a family heirloom purportedly associated with historical figures where they thought would transform their lives with the profit, attracting international investors and museums around the world, only to find out that it's "just" your average antique not associated with any historical figures: it's still worth something but several order of magitude removed and most of the big players end up walking away from the disappointment.

Robert Cooper

Spoilerish: Tomalak becomes a somewhat recurring character, but this first appearance isn't really representative of his character moving forward. It's kind of a recurring thing with the token aliens across Trek-- they are somewhere in the neighborhood but it takes them a few stabs to really land the writing. But he is one of my favorite TNG characters and seeing him again made me happy. Then in "The Price" you get to see them finally start to settle in on Ferengi as something other than a caricature. Season 3 is when this show just becomes consistently good.

Jobbe Smit

If Simone goes as Mr Soprano, I want to see George as Diana Troi...

Jomero

The size and expanse of the Romulan Empire has never been explicitly defined. Like all of their dealings, the truth is likely purposefully obscured. It's widely believed that, in 4X video game terms, the Romulans "build tall" instead of "wide."

Imthecatman

Lloyd Braun made it to a stable wormhole?! ...George is getting upset. Lol.

Cory Garron

They also need to re-create the scene, including infinite mirrors! lol

James W.

George with a hell of read on the creepy empath in episode 308; dude was dollar store Killgrave for sure. (Edit: Deana deserves love but no one deserves to be will someone like Ral. He openly admits to preying on her through his empathic abilities. S C U M B A G activities.) TNG has some real creeps and "Nice" guys. Even characters I dig like Geordie are just walking HR violations at times.

DasBigUn

GIrges "Holy Crap" was heard across the house...lol Tory is DEAFINITLY known as being well worth that

TomGas2025

Oh plse try to keep those two Ferengi from "The Price" in mind...they will show up very later in Star Trek history.

TomGas2025

Dr. Crusher has the rank of Commander and has the privilege of being a bridge officer. When Picard Riker and Data are off Board she is the commanding officer then on the bridge.

Dan

What I really meant was "typically seen on the bridge".

Will Sofer

Please delete this. It’s indisputably a spoiler.

Will Sofer

@Kane Is Able Agreed. There’s another one from someone else that’s actually an outright spoiler in the comments, as well. I’m sure I’ll probably find another by the time I’m done reading.

Will Sofer

Deanna definitely has some issues with chocolate. I swear it makes up about a tenth of her dialogue in the show (a bit hyperbolic there, but not by much).

WayneC

Worf also got a promotion - from Lieutenant Junior Grade to Lieutenant.

Matt O'Keefe

Andreas Katsulas is finally here as Commander Tomalak. Maybe my favorite antagonist done by a fun actor.

DanTurismo

Apparently the writers found out there was some sort of on-set spat between Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden, and so they thought it’d be funny to write the scene with them doing aerobics together.

Glenner7

George, you can inspire Simone by having her appear as different Star Trek characters in the next YouTube thumbnails for Star Trek.

MacGuffinStuff

Agreed about Troi, should be so much more to her, and the Betazoids in general, not just their gorgeous big doe eyes, but it's not something that should be glossed over haha. I mean take for instance the rumors and conspiracy theories about the US Army and the CIA using so called *remote viewers, (Men Who Stare At Goats is a great funny little movie btw). I'm just saying maybe it bears some more explication, as X-Men as it sounds, Geordi looks like Cyclops but sees, well not quite like Professor X, anyway I'm saying I'm curious about the science behind what seems to be a paranormal phenomenon. Interesting for fan fiction I guess. Anyway I digress slightly, I thought it was really cool, I saw Marina Sirtis talk about how Frakes was always one of those friends who checked up on her during the pandemic, which started not long after her husband had died, and Frakes he still does, I think that's so cool they're pretty much all really close former cast mates. Couple other things: loved Riker's poker face referenced and yes I did get Lady Gaga stuck in my head for at least a few minutes. Also, I don't think it was for the feet but, maybe... either way Simone was on to something there, Tarantino wanted/(wants?) to direct a Star Trek movie.

Angzarr

G'Kar in the first episode, Lloyd Braun in the second! 😂

TomGas2025

I don't see it as a spoiler

David Szoke

By the time "very later" comes around they will have been forgotten

David Szoke

By the time comes they will have forgotten them, it's mainly for people who have watched it all and have forgotten them or not realised.

Simon Pegged Me

He killed Dr. Richard Kimble's wife, the one-armed bastard!

Jef Etters

This is not a spolier since George and Simone specifically asked for input to this question, but I won’t go into specifics. Yes the Romulans subjugate species and are slavers to at least one. And yes, an outside person can join the Romulan empire.

Max

Interesting that you had such a strong negative reaction to Devinoni. He is definitely a very flawed character, but he did not appear to me as an obvious douchebag. In fact, he had some charisma. I don't think it was implausible that Troi fell for him. When someone triggers in you a state of limerence, for whatever reason, it's often easy to overlook their flaws and red flags. As for Troi's plots revolving around romance and similar topics: it's a valid point, but I think in part it has also to do with her role and her powers. She's a counselor and a half-Betazoid. She deals with feelings and emotions. So, I think it's expected that a lot of her plot lines deal with that, too.

GAB

If you watch enough Star Trek, you might eventually see a resolution to an unresolved plot line in "The Price". I won't say what happens and when nor in which series.

funky weapon

People are excited to share their favorite stuff. Why assume malice?

TomGas2025

For those who don't know...G'kar is character from the TV Show Babylon 5

TomGas2025

Well it does have an arboretum and replicators fo replicate convincing food with all the nutrients the body needs...so why do they need fresh food on their travels for?

TomGas2025

Oh man...this season has so many bangers I wish they coumd return to the three episodes again...on the other hand there would not be enough time for the to discuss the episodes anymore. Its always something....

Angzarr

And Lloyd Braun (Ral) was kind of George’s nemesis in a few episodes of Seinfeld. That actor kind of skeeved me out in both roles. Serenity now!

Angzarr

Deriving from the phrase “to the brink” (of war, etc) if that wasn’t clear.

PJ P

IMO he was a douchebag who relied on manipulating people. Even with his advantage, when he feared he would lose the bid he resorted to lying/cheating - risking open conflict between the federation and the Ferengi, and for what? Greed.

PJ P

I think Deanna's reaction to Devinoni Ral can be reasoned away but it's still not great. Consider that Deanna was in a somewhat vulnerable state, as shown by her being flustered and/or mentally tired with the social gathering that Picard requested her to attend. Then she meets an empath who plays/preys on her. As he put it, she was a manipulator like him, so it's arguable that she would be more susceptible to his manipulations.

Brandon

I totally forgot the famous yoga scene was in "The Price". I've heard people say that every scene in TNG with only women is just them stretching and doing yoga because of the one instance where it happens. That's just a testament to how one scene burrowed its way into the mind of everyone that's seen it. 😂

Adam Morgan

The Remans are probably the most notable subjugated species. If only for the Romulus and Remus pun.

Sito

Ral reminds me of the Illusive Man from mass effect

erosennin

Since you mention your anime channel and shows that are only as long as a movie, I have a suggestion: FLCL It's a 6 episode show with the budget of a 26 episode show, blending art styles that are all over the place with a coming of age story about space pirates and fighting robots in a rural town where nothing ever happens. It's also got a killer soundtrack.

punterjoe

I hope you're enjoying season 3 as much as the fans who endured seasons 1 & 2 did back in the day. While I think "fan service" is an inspired idea for a Halloween costume, (and more George knows where that .GIF of Crusher & Troi comes from), I'm still thinking of the Tony Soprano costume, only I want to take it up a notch. How about Simone as Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder? Straight down to the giant hands and hairy knuckles - and of course the dance? 🫣 Not to let her steal all the attention - and to get some Trek into the holiday, Ferengi George might be equally unforgettable (mind searing) in its own way. 😏

John Miller

I think it's only the replicators in the crew quarters that can only supply nutritional food. The computer even said it could override.

Three Dalmations

Spoilers are awful for everyone, and this one is not even marked

A Möbius strip cannot play the accordion

Gold and many other elements seem to be rather rare within our universe as its creation involves the collapse/collision of two neutron stars which is rather rare, but does produce a relatively large quantity of heavy elements >Fe-56. The other pathway is through supernova, but that seems to not produce it in the same amounts.

Paul

The Enemy is definitely not average.
