Best movie

Matt O'Keefe

I am not religious, but this movie is more in relation to Easter than Christmas. Just saying.

Smooticus

Great movie. Scorsese caught a ton of shit from the catholic church (and evangelicals) over this movie when it was released

Diego Alexander

Catholic here, this was most definitely a Christmas movie growing up.

TheLeftPecOfTheLord

That’s The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) not this movie. This movie was directed by Mel Gibson

Paul Peavler

Oof. I haven’t seen this movie since it was in theaters and my church, like so many, shuttled us in to watch this en masse. And I will never watch it again, not just because it’s ahistorical torture porn, but if nothing else just to spite the hateful people that made it.

SbE

Yeah, this is the torture porn one. Not sure if I really wanna subject myself to this one again...

Smooticus

You're absolutely right. I got the two mixed up. Last Temptation is controversial for other reasons. I won't say what it is so's to keep things civil on the site, but once I saw it, it was everywhere

Cartoons ReAct

Besides the movie being more realistic than others(and it wasn't even as realistic as how it actually was), this one separated itself from the other movies that it didn't cover from born to death and then resurrection, that's why is called The Passion of the Christ which goes from praying at the Gethsemane until death period.

Emptysea93

As others have said this is a wildly ahistorical take meant to evoke emotion. But it doesn’t truly say anything meaningful. However if you want a really good version, check out The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1967). It is by far the most biblically and historically accurate Jesus film and actually shows how he taught and what his teachings were

Cartoons ReAct

Also I think you guys saw the mild version of the movie, as it has 5minutes less than the original version which were removed to be less graphic

Cartoons ReAct

Is actually both, is Easter due to Easter being literally about the Passion of Christ...but during Christmas this is also mention so many times

RoboNex666

To answer George's theological question about Judas, the Crucifixion of Christ was inevitable but Judas' betrayal was not. Judas choice is a matter of free will and free will is a core concept of Christianity. Peter also betrayed Jesus by denying him, but the difference is that instead of giving in to despair like Judas, he repented, was forgiven and ultimately led the early Church.

Cartoons ReAct

I think I'm going to keep writing a lot here, but yes...Judas betrayal was inevitable and that is why he isn't mentioned as someone who went to hell but as an example of humans fragility

Inkpendude

He died for your sins, but not MY sins. I wasn't even born yet when he died. If somebody else wants to die for my sins don't bother, I'm not done with the sins parts yet. I'll let you know when I stop.

Funny That

The Last Temptation also counts as one of those rare movies where Mr Dafoe isn't meant to be scary.

Matt O'Keefe

Maybe but I always thought of Christmas as being about his birth and Easter being about his crucifixtion (Good Friday) and his ressurection (Easter Sunday). I maybe wrong. Maybe some people grew up watching with this for Christmas. I am 49 so I did not. I do not want to start a religious war over this.

Adam Ingram

You should really do the Last Temptation of Christ as a companion piece.

blerbaberpaterb

regarding the whole "this is an easter movie" thing. i think people are over thinking it. like just listen to the starting conversation in the video. George clearly isnt religious, and didnt grow up celebrating Christianity based holidays in China. so im guessing his line of thinking is literally as straight forward as "Christmas = Christ, this movie has Christ in title". Easter might be common knowledge to us who grew up in Christian/Catholic founded countries/cultures. but thats likely not the case for many parts of the world. especially countries and cultures with religions older than Christianity itself. like China.

blerbaberpaterb

halfAbee

I was going to say the same thing. Not least for its stunning soundtrack, which was further developed into Peter Gabriel's even better 1989 album Passion. I remember Mark Kermode's review of Mel's film as it being best viewed as a horror film, which is a framing that makes it more palatable to me.

JayF

As I said when you announced it on the schedule, it doesn't pull any punches. As to why, well it was probably partly to show that Jesus was beaten so brutally that it sped up his death on the cross. Most died after many hours or days on the cross from asphyxiation as they slowly lost the ability to breathe. They had to work against their own weight to draw a breath. I may add more here depending on your questions as you watch.

BoredLittleLady

I was a child in catechism when this movie was released. I was definitely not allowed to see it. But was told it was an important movie.

BoredLittleLady

In Mexico, Los Reyes Magos (aka three wise men) have their own holiday on January 6. We eat sweet bread (rosca). The story of Santa Clause (as it was taught to me) is he was once a normal and kind man that was given extended life to serve and bring joy to children and celebrate Christmas on the day when Jesus was born.

BoredLittleLady

If you are interested, I have a movie recommendation that is literally about the devil trying to sabotage Santa. Santa Claus (1959) is a product of its time but a classic in Mexico. Not sure where you could find it to stream though.

blerbaberpaterb

how is it embarrassing? not everyone is obligated to know Christian holidays or terminologies. hes not Christian, or raised as one im guessing. i would even wager China celebrates their own sets of holidays that are completely unrelated to Christianity. so why would it be embarrassing to not know Easter or what 'The Passion' stands for. add to that, hes Chinese Canadian. two countries that are among the top 10 LEAST religious countries in the world. i think the real embarrassment is your assumption and narrow point of view.

HeyHeyJK

Except for the fact that there is no evidence that any of the gospels are even true. They were written decades after Jesus‘ death and there’s literally no hard evidence that anything said about him is true. He definitely seems to be real, in terms of he was a real person and not a fictional invention that some people have claimed, but it’s all hogwash, for lack of a better term. As someone who grew up in the church, it seemed pretty obvious to me in my late teens said it was all just propaganda and why do we study Greek and Roman gods as mythology but other gods are real? All religions are just made up. They’re all just men, primarily, or probably exclusively, who just made this shit up. Pre-science ways of explaining the world around them and reactions to political scenarios. I just don’t understand how so many people still hold so strongly to these groups of rules and stories that are thousands of years old and very much a part of their time. People are funny that way I guess.

Cartoons ReAct

Most characters are based on people mentioned in the bible, Simon who helped carrying the cross, the woman who helped cleaning him, and the disciples shown during the Passion are John, Peter and Judas

Nathan Jasper

Jesus is the real punk rock. He was an advocate, a loving and beautiful soul, and such a wise teacher and no matter how many times he was challenged by the establishment, he schooled all of them time and time again.

blerbaberpaterb

like Gandhi said, "i like your Christ. i do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

Thaydon S

I'll pray for u goober

Matt Dellarosa

Thanks for posting this reaction George and Simone. This is a hard one to watch for anyone so I hope you were able to take some time to recover from it. When this movie came out in theaters people left in shock and were very affected by it all. This is the first time the crucifixion was accurately portrayed and if you can believe this....they still left out some things and in reality it was more brutal than what we see here. Historically most people did not survive the scouring. George, I wanna try to answer some of your questions. Im only speaking historically and want you both to feel free to draw your own conclusions. As far as the inevitability of the betrayal of Jesus goes, it was prophesied hundreds of years before Jesus was born. Speaking from the record of scripture, Jesus knew from the beginning who his betrayer would be before he called him to be his disciple. So that is a very complex question. I will say that some believe, including me, that the original intent of Judas was not to send Jesus to his death. Judas was a zealot, meaning he was a political revolutionary dedicated to the overthrow of Rome. Jesus was not interested in political insurrection so the theory is that Judas was trying to force Jesus' hand to fight against the Romans and free Israel. Then had regret when he was condemned and took his own life. It seems more logical to me especially considering that by the fall of Israel in 70 AD the majority of Israel were zealots. As far as how this movie was received by the church when it was released that's a mixed bag of answers. Of course everyone reacted to the brutality of the violence in the movie. But which "church" are you referring to? Keep in mind that Mel Gibson is Catholic and there are some catholic themes in this movie, particularly when it comes to the portrayed of Mary. So there are probably a thousand answers to that question depending on who you ask. Also, yes the portrayel of Pontius Pilate was accurate and he was in a difficult position politically. Most people don't realize that Pilate was in no way a moral or temperate man. He only appeared to be in this situation because of his position he was in. Historically he was extremely violent. The major controversy surrounding this movie was due to the fact that when the movie was originally made the subtitles listed the Jews saying, "Let his blood be on us and our children." The Jewish community protested so he left the audio in and removed the subtitle. There is no connection between Christ and Santa Clause but St. Nicholas was a real person. Also the word "Easter" is not a Christian term. Ill let you do your own research on all of that because it's also a mixed bag of perspectives depending on who you ask. And because this is a long post and im too lazy to Google it, lol. Great reaction yall, thanks again.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

I apologize ahead of time as I will be commenting as I watch along so there might be a few comments lol. I used to be a Christian before I converted to secular Buddhism and spent years doing various Bible studies. I also have a love for theology of all varieties so, I'm no expert but I do have a lot of knowledge on this subject of religion, specifically the Abrahamic ones. I even have a Christian/Jewish/Muslim coexist tattoo on my leg. How the betrayal is viewed depends on which interpretation you follow. In general it's seen as you stated, it needed to happen and Judas was a tool for God more than a betrayer. In many interpretations he is the most loved Apostle and that's why Jesus chose him to betray him. In this Judas never wanted to betray Jesus at all, but he did it because he loved and believed in him so it must be done. In secular interpretations, ones that remove all divinity from the story and try to ground it in reality it's the same, Jesus knew that these events would make him a martyr and strengthen the people's will against the oppressive regimes that ruled them. I do like this film but if you're more interested "The Gospel of John" by the living Bible is way better than this one. It's almost a word for word live action telling of the Gospel and it's well done with good performers. I always felt like this movie was more for the shock value and for Christians to sort of relive the events for themselves, which is awesome but it's not even based on any of the Gospel and focuses on the "Gore" too much in my opinion. The Passion was based on a play that later was written as a book.

Big Mac

To answer your question about the movies reception, this movie was definitely well recieved and watched among Christians at large and is still pretty popular in mainstream Christianity. Whereas Scorsese's film with Willem Dafoe was definitely way more controversial for Christians. Outside of mainstream Christianity though, I think this movie is quite controversial and The Last Temptation of Christ is generally praised.

CT

The random woman who comforts Jesus on the way to the crucifixion is named Veronica. Look up Veil of Veronica for more info. Mary Magdalene (2018) stars Rooney Mara as Mary and Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus, and is quite good.

Tay Schumaker

It's really more of an Easter movie than a Christmas one

Alexrandom

My version is 2h06. I think you guys saw an edited version. I didn't even know that existed or I'd have said something before you watched it. Well, that's not a huge issue for this movie anyway. No worries 🙂

Ginger

eh no thanks, that's a pass for me - looking forward to saturday

Ginger

Ok, that one made me chuckle :D

A movie I really loved growing up was the movie musical Jesus Christ Superstar from 1973. It had a very unique representation of Jesus last days as well as of Judas and his own struggles. I highly recommend it. 70's musicals like Hair which is exceptional, or All That Jazz or Godspell etc., are definitely unique in their approach.

Jeff K.

Unrelated to this movie (although I guess kinda related given the setting?), the new Knives Out movie Wake Up Dead Man comes out on Netflix tomorrow. Fingers crossed it’s on the schedule soon.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

Ok now I might catch some crap lol. Christmas was basically coopted by Christianity. The origin of Santa clause is actually Odin. And there's multiple incarnations, stories, and inspirations that sort of culminated in what became Christmas. If you're Christian it's about Jesus, if you're not it could be about a number of different things. The stories range from a trickster who put coal in your sock and toys in your shoes to a fat man dropping down the chimney. The tubby image is mostly from ad marketing and the modern traditions of gift giving and celebrations came from the 1800's as a direct result of "A Christmas Carol". That's a movie you should add to the list as well as the 2017 movie "The Man Who Invented Christmas". A really good movie about the writing of the book and how Charles Dickens created the characters.

Davide

The cast is mostly Italian actors, Satan is played by Rosalinda Celentano, Claudia the wife fo Pontius Pilate played by Claudia Gerini, Mattia Sbragia Playing Caiaphas. There is also Sabrina Impacciatore who is also known in America for having participated in the series The White Lotus.

Inkpendude

contempt? How? don't overthink it friend. I'm just joking about that specific phrase

StonyD

I would think it's rated R because of the graphic content. That would make more sense.

Matt Dellarosa

By the way Simone, I think at one point you were reacting to the soldiers breaking the legs of the crucified men. Let me explain...the real cause of death during crucifixion for anyone who lived long enough was asphyxiation. (Probably not spelling that right.) While they were on the cross fluid would fill their lungs and they would have to push themselves up by their feet against the nails in their feet to breath. So everytime Jesus spoke on the cross, (7 times) that's what he had to do. The soldiers would break the legs of the men so they would die quicker and they could finish the job. When they came to Jesus they saw he had already died.

I saw this in the theater with a group from church. I was 19yrs old and at the time my walk with Christianity was pretty neutral. I'd been in church since I was a child, but never had such a profound representation of what Jesus went through for us until this movie. The dots just didn't connect for me until this. Changed my while life and faith walk. They had to take me out of the theater for a while, I was shaking and crying so badly at one point. This was a one time watch for me.

blerbaberpaterb

at least they didnt make him blonde with blue eyes lookin like Obi Wan.

not for me, subbed just for this one 🙏

I could imagine that most cultures celebrated the comming back of light, at least in europe 21st december is the day with the shortest day. Dont know if this is the same for the south hemesphere? And I'm to lazy to look up :D

Random Nevermind

7:15 About the betrayal. Judas betrayed Him, but if you look at Luke 22:49–52, it’s clear that Jesus had time to escape or even fight back, but He surrendered Himself. It is even clearer in John 18:4–5: «Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he.» So Judas created the circumstances, but Jesus surrendered Himself. The prophecy was fulfilled, but Judas is not the cause of the Passion of Christ. 21:00 Pontius Pilate did not convert to Christianity. His wife did. 26:55 The girl is Veronica, the heroine of a well-known legend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veil_of_Veronica 30:40 About the soldiers beating Christ. This was not done to delay the process. On the contrary, the point was to make the condemned man reach the cross in such a condition that he would die there as soon as possible. Hence the scourging, beatings, the march with the cross, and similar actions. 36:16 Why break the legs? For the same reason. Death on the cross occurs from asphyxiation: in the crucified position it is difficult to breathe unless one pulls up with the arms or lifts the body by pushing on the feet (which are, of course, nailed). Therefore, if the legs are broken, death comes faster.

Kaz5209

I was still back in Syria when this movie released. A piece of trivia for you all: there were special screenings for the movie in churches WITHOUT subtitles, as many Asyrians in Syria still speak the language and we're able to understand everything. As an Arab a lot of the words spoken were also familiar to me as they have almost the same pronunciation in Arabic and I imagine in Hebrew as well.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

Ooh I never thought about that before. I might have to check into it, sounds like it could be interesting.

Twiska Brand

Since this film went so far, I wish it went a tiny bit further. They should have broken the legs before they were nailed to the cross and slumped them to the side, and the nails should have went through the wrists not the palms. This is important as crucifixion is design to cause fluid to build up in the lungs, via a permanent slumped posture. You then pierce the lungs with a spear to drain the fluid and prolong the suffering. Basically the victim dies of dehydration in agony. Just saying, since it's clear they were going for brutal realism, not the Renaissance romanisation of the Crucifixion, they should have gone all the way.

G P

Jesus Christ Superstar is an excellent film/musical

KnittingHaven

Nah, no need to catch crap, you're right. Any Christians who know the history of our faith would agree. A lot of the trappings Christmas and Easter in our culture are pagan in origin from winter solstice and spring/fertility celebrations.

Tay Schumaker

The key is in the name. The passion refers to just this part of the story, not all of Jesus's life

KnittingHaven

As a Christian, I just want to say to George that you're questions are very thoughtful and honest and I can't imagine anyone being offended by them.

Opti_Frog

Getting tortured for half a day is not a bad deal when you get to come back as ruler of the universe three days later. Edit: This movie is [Whack] 😄

JoeE

Regarding the portrayal of Pilate, some people believe his milquetoast portrayal (that usually makes him more and more innocent the later the accounts are) was a way to shift blame for Jesus’s death from the Romans to the Jewish people. Unfortunately, there is very little evidence From good sources for almost anything from that time and place regarding particular people. Many of the stories come from unknown sources decades or centuries later. While some churches believe the Pilate became a Christian story it is certainly not widely accepted

Ari Ramirez

I dunno man, if you told me they're making a Jesus reboot starring Dwayne Johnson, I'm there on opening day

blerbaberpaterb

not everyone knows Christian terminology or meanings. for anyone that doenst have a Christian or Catholic upbringing or have any understanding of it, they likely only see the word Christ and assume Christmas.

Jeff K.

I know you already have a list of shows, but I would like you consider to add Person of Interest, is a great show with Jim Caviezel and Taraji P Henson. It has a little of everything. a little of Team A, a little of Jason Bourne, a little of Matrix.

Jeff K.

Yes, what he said. Nothing but pure goodness and wholesomeness and warm feelings. And even though I am an atheist, the religious elements not only don't bother me, but genuinely move me (perhaps in part because of who delivers the primary bit of that, and in what context).

Orangeplum

Theres a father/son team of scientists who've been practising crucifiction (without the nails of course) for years or decades I cant remember. Anyway they wanted to figure out death by it, and it turns out the position slowly suffocates you. It's apparently so excruciating that the longest they've been able to test it is like 30 sec to 1 min before its unbearable. Now imagine being like that for hours :(

Lyle Morgan

Mel Gibson filmed his own hands driving the nails to show his (and mankind's) culpability in the crucifixion since he was a sinner in need of the sacrifice.

funky weapon

regarding Satan: I love this portrayal of the devil because - and this is just my interpretation - the devil isn't influencing events or interfering with Jesus in any way. I see Satan more as an observer, wryly chuckling and enjoying the irony that the very people Jesus came to save are betraying him of their own free will. no help needed.

Tyler Foster

Nicolas Cage is doing a Jesus movie that looks like a horror film...

Brad Lowry

WoW! I haven’t seen this since I was picketed for going to it…

Jeff K.

Caviezel is so disappointing. I was such a big fan of his based on the movies Frequency and Count of Monte Cristo (man, do I love both of those movies but the politics of Caviezel and Dennis Quaid have really hindered my love of Frequency in recent years), coupled with his early career appearance on The Wonder Years. And now... oof. Dude is a lunatic. Not saying that because he's religious, to be clear, but because of the QAnon bullshit he prescribes to and perpetuates at every opportunity. He's a nutjob.

Jeff K.

Tyler Foster - every single word, in that order, somehow makes 100% sense to me.

Ari Ramirez

So I was raised as a catholic, and even though I first watched this while I was still a practitioner, I think I appreciate both the movie's portrayal of the story (and the craft of the movie itself as a whole) a little more now that I'm not, as weird as it sounds. While the more supernatural and more "Blockbuster Hollywood movie-like" elements were a bit too much for me, the seriousness and attention to detail is much appreciated.

Opti_Frog

djKENTO, The point of this debacle is not Christ's story. It's a fine-tuned piece of emotional blackmail designed to make Christians feel so sorry for Jesus that is guilt-trips them into stronger, possibly radical, belief. It's basically religious pornography, all about the flesh. With a side of antisemitism.

Alexrandom

I'm not trying to start something or to offend anyone. If I do I'm sorry but I just want to share my perspective, as someone who's not from America. In my country, I think most people you speak with, about the figure of Jesus, will tell you some version of "I don't think he existed for real and if he did he must have been a nice dude who did good stuff and pissed off the wrong people." I personally cannot grasp how the things written in the bible could be taken literally by anyone. I have nothing against it, if it helps guide people to be better I'm all for it. But to me it's no different than greek mythology for example. To the people saying it's torture porn. In my head, torture porn is hurting characters for the sake of it. In this film, the point is clearly narrative. It's an integral part to the story of Jesus. It might be voyeuristic and very clearly lacking in subtlety, I'll give you that, but still. I'm not going to defend this film too much because I don't find it extremely compelling but I sure think some people in the comments go way overboard about what the film is. I won't comment on the Qanon and antisemitic stuff, I'm not informed enough about it and honestly I'm here for the movies, not what happens outside of them. But Caviezel does seem like a weird fellow. I don't know if Mel Gibson is all that bad, he's a troubled man who made huge mistakes but I think it's a bit hypocritical from christians to still hate on him so much after all these years when their religion is about forgiveness. Sorry for the long message. Try to be good to each other and, most importantly, keep watching films ! 🙂

Grinznmore

I was a bit surprised this would be a Christmas season selection. That said, I've seen the film before and can't handle the brutality. I'll pass. Happy Holidays everybody

Dan Holmes

Yes Judas' betrayal was inevitable, prophesied even (Psalm 41:9). They break the legs so they can longer lift themselves and they suffocate faster, they do not break Christ's legs because he is already dead, which was also prophesied in Psalm 34:20 This was incredibly well received throughout most of society, Many churches went in groups to see it the first few weeks of release. Highest grossing R rated film for a decade+ Please watch Apocalypto soon. Another Masterpiece by Mel and please read and take to heart John 3:16 :)

A little info about the Disciples is that most of them died horrible deaths. Either were crucified or beheaded after teaching Jesus way in different parts of the world. Notably, Matthew was beheaded in Ethiopia. (wasn’t in the film). Simon I think is a little in the film was killed in Persia. Peter(the disciple who denied Jesus 3 times) was crucified BUT upside down in Rome. The only disciple to live out his life was John, but he was poisoned he just survived it and was then sent to exile on Patmos a Greek Island. He wrote the last book of the Bible there.

Timothy Peterson

Well anyone who says he didn't exist is laughed out of historical circles so... Plenty of people don't believe in things about Jesus. But (almost) no serious historian doesn't believe he existed.

Timothy Peterson

No, the origins of Christmas is purely Christian. You should stop going to meme's for your history.

sb

Random: Scrolling comments and your name caught my eye. Had to give a like for the name before reading your thoughtful comment in which I do agree with.

Daniel Bjork

Have ya’ll watched Monty Python’s Life of Brian? Its more historically accurate than this pulpy propaganda

Jeff K.

Yep, they definitely have. And they certainly appreciated its brilliance. Highly recommend going to YT to find their reaction.

MacGuffinStuff

Really more of an Easter/Spring Equinox movie than a Christmas/Winter Solstice movie, just saying. Yeah I'm gonna try to keep it brief, raised Chicano and religious, slightly more than half of my family is Catholic, some very, some just wear a cross and that's enough. The other almost half call themselves Born Again Christians, I call them Protestants and Evangelicals because it annoys them, and it is so funny how all the agnostics and such among me and my cousins find each other at get togethers, a lot of us are also veterans and we have a good time 🤘 But yeah, my religious family members, this movie is canon to them. And I will admit, I cried watching it, I actually do think the events did mostly happen (btw that's James with the two Marys, he was a disciple and his younger half brother, there was another James who was not related, John the Baptist was his older cousin, I think that was the other disciple who ran away at the beginning, and Peter is the first Father, AKA Pope, of Rome). And it's just horrific, and to be fair other people have been tortured like that, but, I understand how if you believe this like they do, this movie is beyond intense, it's an actual religious experience as real to them as a veteran of Normandy watching the beginning of Saving Private Ryan. I'm gonna go ahead and stop, I really hope I haven't offended anyone, I'll just recommend Albert Brooks in an Albert Brooks film, written by Albert Brooks, "DEFENDING YOUR LIFE", it's a personal favorite, I like his theory and I think you'll like the movie, his movie, Albert Brooks.

FranciscoGios

I know I’m getting older and wiser when I say I’m not a big religion fanatic, but this movie about Jesus being tortured and crucified in front of his family is pretty fucked up. Imagine if they made The Passion of the Christ Part 2 and the announcer said something like - “ Jesus is back this time he wants revenge and is on a mission to take down the High Priest of Jerusalem…. Stay tune if Jesus has the guts to take down an Empire!!!” 🤣

Logan Nelson

One of the few movies where it makes sense that you need to read the book first...

Logan Nelson

Apocalypto is an amazing film... I think historical accuracy is around the Braveheart levels but it's a damn good watch...

Logan Nelson

My only sticking point of Jesus, is that I just don't believe he had magic powers... I think he was a very influential person of the time and spoke a message of peace and love... His message that you don't need to go through the church for forgiveness or to get to heaven was extremely dangerous ground to tread on at the time and I think that's why he was killed... Greed and corruption, the most human of traits...

Logan Nelson

Satan's all about free will... He knows the evil within man needs no help from him...

Logan Nelson

Imagine being like that for the rest of your life...

Logan Nelson

It's an incomplete show, if I remember correctly... Wasn't it canceled?

Logan Nelson

The Carpenter's Son... Looks dope and seems so suitable for Nic Cage...

Logan Nelson

I mean... Look at what Deadpool went through...

Logan Nelson

And it's not like that would been a stretch for this fx team...

droodly

@logan. Nope. It's a complete show with a complete story arc. I really enjoyed it.

Helen Mucus

Im not a believer, but my family is devout Christians, and they all love this film. I think it works for those who already know a lot about the story, but for people who don't have a lot of knowledge about what Jesus taught or why he was crucified and the significance of his resurrection, I think this movie could just seem morbid and kind of pointless.

maikeru

Insanity. I wouldn´t let my children watch this if I had any. Nobody under, at least, 16 should watch this.

Tom B

And in x2 speed

Tom B

Same taking a pass

Solus

So, here's a little interesting tidbit, when this movie came out, three different people watched this movie turned themselves in to the police for past crimes they did, I believe one murdered someone and the other was stole money from a bank or something and I forgot what the third did.

Craig Motbey

There are good religious people, and there are good religious films. Mel Gibson is not one of those people, and this film is not one of those films.

Matrim

It’s a well shot movie, but it’s made by a maniac and passion plays have a really nasty history. I’d just as soon leave this in the past.

Raven Blackrose

Watching Easter related contestedly antisemetic torture porn for Christmas is certainly a choice. I try not to judge (I know they had no idea what this movie really was) but as someone who grew up Southern Baptist, spent a lot of time in church, this is a vile movie made by a vile man, designed to fuel the worst instincts of a privileged class that feels opressed by association. Sorry to Simone and George that they had to watch it.

Simon Pegged Me

My favorite part of Last Temptation is when Willem Dafoe says, "You know, I'm somewhat of a messiah, myself." (I'm paraphrasing. It's been a while since I've seen it.)

blerbaberpaterb

i mean "Watching Easter related contestedly antisemetic torture porn for Christmas is certainly a choice." makes it sound like you think they knew that before and and still chose to do it just to spite you. which.. evidently they didnt, didnt seem like they even knew what the phrase "the passion" meant.

Simon Pegged Me

Simone, your "worst casting pick" of Jim Gaffigan reminded me of my favorite joke of his: “Ever wonder what people got Jesus for Christmas? It's like, ‘Oh, great, socks. You know I'm dying for your sins, right?’” I'm going through my picks, and as much I'd like to give Kyle MacLachlan another bite at the savior apple, the absolute worst choice for Jesus I can think of is Larry David. Pretty, pretty good, right?

Marcus Sjölander

Nothing's antisemitic about it. And torture porn? Jesus died for all our sins. Should we just pretend otherwise?

Marcus Sjölander

Seems to me that you are projecting your own vile hateful nature.

Marcus Sjölander

It's weird that you grew up Christian, yet you think honoring Jesus by at least trying to get somewhat close to the truth about his suffering is "torture porn"... how else should a realistic movie about his suffering be? Should it treat adults like children? How silly...

blerbaberpaterb

kind of ironic Marcus that you can't seem to do the one thing Jesus wants everyone to do. which is to accept others for their views and the way they are, even when it conflicts with our own. as Gandhi once said "I like your Christ, i dont like your Christians. They are so unlike Christ."

Matrim

The film is inherently political, and any discussion of it necessarily involves discussing the motivations of the people who made it.

blerbaberpaterb

also, you understand that this is a movie right? like movie made by man? who isnt infallible? its not scripture, nor is it a documentary that time travelled and followed Christ around. Its a man made vision with flaws that people can point out to. it isnt an ordained piece of sacred vision.

blerbaberpaterb

i dont think Marcus understand that this is a movie, like movie made by man. who isnt infallible. its not scripture, nor is it a documentary that time travelled and followed Christ around. Its a man made vision with flaws, in both the film and in the man who made it. that people can point out to. it isnt an ordained piece of sacred vision. its also so ironic to say "dont bring politics" into the story about Christ's crucifixion. that story in itself is political af, a poor average man advocating for the rights of everyone equally while living under the rules of a dictator and a theocracy. Jesus Christ in your scripture is literally written as a political rebel. but Christians being the least Christlike people is nothing new.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

I read that history before the internet was available to the general public lol. I get my history from books. But, agree to disagree. I view this as George and Simones place of business so this isn't the place for an argument about the origins of Christmas. Find me when it gets posted to youtube, at least then our comments can help out the channel a little lol.

Darren Boyle

No surprise this wasnt put up to vote on... as it would have never done well. Absolutely NOT interested in religious dogma being formatted as reality in a poorly made film. Utter nonsense

ColdPizzaChris

As others have mentioned, it is more of an Easter movie. Regardless, thank you for watching/posting.

Ben Gilbert

I haven't seen the film. At the time it seemed to be yet another torture porn movie, this time disguised as a religious epic.

ChristianK

Man this is a strange remake of the experiments Deadpool went through

Steve Arnold

This one was really hard to watch. Gibson did a great jib showing us the gruesomeness that people are capable of. I hope you will be watching „The DaVinci Code“ at some time, giving you another angle on this.

michael cross

So funny story about the casting. I saw a podcast of the actor talk about it. Him and mel gibson were talking about how mel gibson wanted to make it and how risky it was bc of the subjectmaterial. And jim (plays jesus) puts it together that he has the same initials and was like "you want me to play jesus dont you?" Mel Gibson takes a drag of his cigarette and under his breath with lungs full of smoke "yup" and turns away. Im sure some details were wrong but dont wanna rewatch the podcast lol

Roddrick Smith

I could be wrong but this was one of the first movies I noticed that started the trend of Hollywood movies having characters speak in their own language instead of everyone sounding British or speaking English. Kind of like how Jason Bourne and the Matrix changed how fight choreography was done for action movies.

Opti_Frog

Oh, i just remembered that George asked about Easter bunnies. Both Christmas and Easter were old pagan celebrations that got co-opted by Christianity, but plenty of pagan symbols that predate Christianity remains associated with modern versions of these celebrations. Easter was a pagan celebration of the Spring Equinox, focused on rebirth, fertility, and the return of life after winter. Eggs represent fertility and bunnies represent fucking. Simple as that.

Charlie Ito

I am not religious, and was not raised to be, but my special interest lately seems to be biblical history and Christian literature so I have watched several reactions to this (along with many other films and books and things). I know this film's a lot, but thank you for picking it; I enjoy your thoughts and questions, it brings a refreshing experience to films I've already seen, like this one. And thank you to everyone in the Passion of the Comments who is sharing historical and/or biblical information, personal experiences, and film lore! I am learning a lot, and appreciate this space where diverse opinions can be shared with good intent. "For if you love only those who love you, what reward is there in that?" :)

blerbaberpaterb

ah yes, being Christian is like being black since every black person was actually born white and then taught to be black, by going to black sunday school and black churches. then they grow up to be black. but to answer the less asinine part of your comment; the Count / Lethal Weapon movies were not created by Mel or Jim. they only starred in it. secondly, those films, or in fact other films Mel directed, were not subject matters that actively has an affect on people, nor did they so overtly reflected his own personal opinions and beliefs. Passion worked as an amplifier to his own personal shit, and Christianity has an active, and often detrimental affect on the world as we speak.

ColdPizzaChris

Just finished watching the full reaction. I really appreciated your thoughts throughout.

ColdPizzaChris

The depiction in the Bible says that the legs of the two thieves are broken after their crucifixion and Jesus’ legs are not because he is already dead, which is why they confirm his death with the spear John 19:31-33

Haye Zeus

I think this is a well made film. As someone who respects the lore of Jesus more than actually believes in it, I think the crucifixion gets too much attention. I get the reason why. But there is a sense of morbidity towards it that has always turned me off. Still, aside my personal hang ups and beliefs, it’s a good film. I think Apocalypto is Mel’s best film tho. I can watch that movie over and over no problem.

Dioskur

Why do you feel the need to insult religious people? What is your goal with it?

Dioskur

Darren your profile picture seems to suggest you enjoy a show that tries to make us believe that humans have four fingers. That is utter nonsense.

Dioskur

"I try not to judge" Try harder

Franz Liszt

He's not wrong. It is "religious dogma being formatted as reality in a poorly (kinda) made film". I still like it, but not the best movie in the world. Not even Mel Gibson's best.

Franz Liszt

Marcus, please. Stop being such a child and accept that there are people who don't like this movie, and that doesn't mean they have a "vile hateful nature". The antisemitic concerns are valid. Afterall, this is a movie by Mel Gibson, who is a well-known antisemite, so you gotta be careful.

Franz Liszt

I don't understand the connection. It's a movie about Jesus' death, therefore it isn't political? Isn't it fair to be skeptical of a movie made by a man famous for going on crazy antisemitic rants?

Chrissonator

The movie itself is well made, but I don't really put any stock in any of the rest of it, story-wise.

Chrissonator

Shoot, I don't need a religious film for that... lol

Chrissonator

People are freely able to criticize a religious belief just as they are freely able to criticize anything else someone may believe in, the only thing I'm obligated to do is respect the right of someone to believe it, I don't have to respect what they believe.

Chrissonator

I mean, giving the gruesome nature of the Bible as a whole, it's kinda right up there with those.

Lewis Ramos

As a Follower of Christ; thank you for this reaction I think you guys stayed very respectful and thoughtful of The Faith & although y’all are non-believers I truly feel that the Holy Spirt was shining through the both of you this episode! Hope this movie has planted many seeds in yours and others hearts today God Bless you all🫰🏼

Dioskur

I didnt ask if she is allowed to say it it, I asked her why she feels the need to do so.

Rhett Samios

I commend you both for traumatising yourselves with this torture porn. I went and saw this on a cinema screen and I had to sleep with a light on for about a week afterwards. Haven’t watched it since then until today. I was thinking about why George was more affected despite having watched at least as gory films as this. I figure it’s because it’s not so much the gore as the VIOLENCE that makes it so unsettling. Slasher film gore they make it just unrealistic enough that you can remind yourself it’s a movie. In this they use just about every version of torture that we know they were legally allowed to do in the time this story is set, turn it up to eleven, and then do all of it to one guy. That level of person to person violence is viscerally unsettling.

Jay Davis

Ya know, I never had any interest in seeing this movie. But, for some reason, I'm interested in seeing you two see this movie and what you think of it even though I have no idea what to think of it yet. Weird.

The Real Andrew Kim

Yes this was controversial for many reasons. I am not sure if this movie got voted or if this was just a random decision to watch this for xmas, but if there was a movie I would have asked you to avoid it would have been this one. But since you did, I recommend watching the South Park episode "The Passion of the Jew" that straight up calls out this movie for what it is which is christian propaganda and how it kinda predicted the current state of white christian nationalism in 2025. I feel it is fair counterpoint and palate cleanser as a contrast after watching this Antisemitic torture porn. On a personal note, the reason I hate this movie and why it is so controversial for me is that people actually believe this stuff as literal, but this is not a historical documentary, nor does it make any real attempt at historical accuracy aside from the adherence to ancient languages (which is dubitable at best). Nor is this a fictional movie in the sense that it wasn't created as just a form of entertainment. There are real world consequences for presenting material considered sacred to the masses that actually effects life, culture and politics. The reason this was the highest grossing rated R movie until Deadpool was because churches relentlessly promoted it to their congregations and pretty much forced all youth church groups to watch it. That alone should show you how powerful religious media can have on culture and how dangerous it can be to dog whistle to so many christian fundamentalists. This is not Jesus Cinematic Universe, this is Dogma and Gospel and people have died and killed in the name of these "characters". You don't ever see someone trying to argue Marvel movies as literal (although there are plenty of right wing nut jobs who would argue Thanos talking points) but I have met christians who think this is literal and holds it up as a literal interpretation of history and the bible and cite it as reasons for their antisemitism.

Opti_Frog

It is a strange sort of affair when being repelled and disgusted by excessive violence can be seen as something holy.

Xiledchicken

The real problem with this movie is the toxicity it brings out of people on both sides. You're free to believe in whatever you want, but the attacking and belittlement of others who don't share your beliefs is unnecessary and childish. It's ok to disagree but it doesn't give you license to be unkind.

Rupert Purcat

If you wanted a Mel Gibson Christ-mas movie you should have gone with Fatman ;)

JayJay

Just ignorance

JayJay

It’s a “story book” with eye witness testimony. With the most historical manuscript evidence than any other ancient work combined. Do your research instead of ignorantly talking about something you clearly know nothing about….bet you haven’t even read 1 full chapter of the bible, let alone researching the historical authenticity of Jesus. smh, but got the nerve to insult 2.4 billion + peoples beliefs.

JayJay

Read the bible and see if the movie is over exaggerating or not.

JayJay

No one said it was, whats the point of putting it down? Only to show your prejudice….people will watch zombie movies with guts and horror and scary evil movies, but cant stand to watch a movie based off of historical narrative? What a joke.

Ben Gilbert

I didn't say it was exaggerating or that it wasn't true. I just said I didn't want to watch it

Vincent Masschelein

I have seen this movie, as well as other films about Jesus. I was raised Catholic, but as I grew older, I stepped away from religion. I know the story, and while I think the film is well made and emotionally powerful, it’s hard to ignore that it can also reinforce anti-Semitic sentiments.

C.D.B Brennan

Respectfully no it does not. It gives a biblically accurate version of these events.

C.D.B Brennan

how the hell is this movie Antisemitic?

C.D.B Brennan

Also Christians literally believe that Christ was tortured and died and this move gives a bible-accurate depiction of those beliefs what exactly is the issue with that?

China Andronicus

The woman with the braids who wipes Jesus’ face is the one you were talking about earlier in the film, Saint Veronica, whose veil captured the image of Jesus’ face and is said to have been able to perform miracles. I was brought up Catholic and have been Team Judas since I was about seven. I can’t comprehend how it can be God’s plan but Judas is evil for following it. You said you’ve seen Jesus Christ Superstar. If so, you know Claudia. Pilate sings a song about a dream he had foretelling the encounter with Jesus. In reality, his wife Claudia had the dream and begged her husband not to execute Jesus. Please, please, PLEASE watch Jesus Christ Superstar. I know it’s all music so it would be a hard one to do, but it’s so damn good, with some of the greatest performers ever. To this day, Ted Neeley is one of the only actors I can take seriously as Jesus. So many others (including Jim Caviezel) ruined it for me with their personal lives and attitudes. Ted is a gem, both in acting and in real life.

Hannah Gs

Mel Gibson is...not a good person.

Rumpus Parable Art

I'm only a bit more than 30minutes in, but color me just shocked, *shocked*, I say, at Mel Gibson taking the Evil Jews angle over that of Judaic, Christian, Roman and regional historians'. Part of me wants to keep watching just for the fun of "I was there!" because I ended up accidentally in my travels at a production site where a small smidge was filmed.... but don't know how much more of Gibson's anti-Semitic gore-porn I can do. Edited: Yup, 50 minutes in and it has deviated so much from the above *and* Biblical gospels that I gotta close this one down and move on. Can't take this badly done of a film any further, especially knowing it's this way/why Gibson made it.

Rumpus Parable Art

Indeed. I had to shut it off after less than an hour it was so badly done and with such obvious, fully unfounded in history or bible, skewing.
