Welcome back sopranos famiglia!

Jeff K.

I know I must still be groggy and out of it this morning, because I woke up thinking it was Wednesday and being like, "Oh sweet, Fallout for George and Simone!" So imagine my confusion when I looked at the post and realized that my brain is broken and I'm a day early. Dagnabit!

djKENTO

George the term for side chick you're thinking of is "goomah". It comes from the Italian word "comare" which means Godmother and is used like... everyone knows what it really means... like it was code but it's not fooling anyone so now everyone just uses it openly. The reason Comare becomes Goomah is because certain Italian dialects swap c and g sounds... which is why words like Capicola becomes Gabagool. Comare becomes Goomah.

Jordan Hume

Street Boss is not a downgrade from Captain. Street Boss is the highest rank outside of a boss. A street boss is the boss on the street while the actual boss (Junior) is either in prison or sick. So they actually upgraded Tony from Captain to Street Boss in their eyes. Little did they know that Tony was kind of actually the boss the whole time!

Thomas Yanez

Where the intro discussion about Livia is concerned, I don't remember at all what it was like watching this show for the first time, other than just disliking her. I don't remember if I suspected anything about her behavior or if I was surprised at the end. All I know now on rewatching is that I can't stand the character and she puts me on edge every time she's on screen.

djKENTO

Christopher isn't a direct nephew the way you're thinking. Christopher's dad, Dickie, is Carmela's cousin. So they're not blood related, and it's not REALLY an uncle/nephew, it's more of a sign that they're family and that Chris is under Tony...

Adam Vialpando

Pretty sure they know Tony is the actual boss in all but name. I mean they know that one of the reasons I'm Junior tried to whack him was because the other Capos were going to Tony instead of Junior. And last season they tried to get Junior to admit that Tony is the real boss. And even if he was just the street boss he would still be the most powerful with Junior in jail.

Analyze This is a movie with robert Deniro, about a Mob Boss going to therapy. It's a comedy and I personally like it a lot! Funnily enough, nowadays some reviewers say "The Sopranos is the worst thing that could've happened to Analyze This", because Sopranos shows such a... sincere view on therapy for a mobster!

Cam

So glad this is back 🔥

Lone Desert Bones

A friend of mine and I will continually add absurd verses to the song used in that opening montage “When I was 109, It was a very good year Except for the robots from space Who kidnapped my mother.”

Gee

the broker that gets beaten up is Kevin Sussman, you might know him as Stuart (the comic store owner) in the Big Bang Theory

PIG

Now that Simone went to the doctor to be treated... I was thinking "How do you pay the doctor if you're a TV /Movie Reactor? Did George create his own HMO for the both of them (he WOULD do something like that)? Did she pay out of pocket?" Then my american brain realized they were in Canada lol Foolish pig.

PIG

"Cinasurance" HMO. George can laminate just two cards only.... ... I am really bored right now lol

dc

So glad the Sopranos are back — and Bobby Balaca makes his debut! Lots of great episode this season.

Young Blood Priest

I might be alone but I don’t feel sorry for Carmela at all. She knew who/what Tony was when she married him. The only people I feel bad for are the kids because you can’t pick your family.

Brandon

Good observation by George. Steve Schirripa, who played Bobby was wearing a prosthetic belly piece to look heavier. He has said himself that he didn't need one later on. 😆

Brandon

Italian slang words and the American versions of them can be funny like that. It's hard to believe that 'stugots' came from 'stucazzo'. If I'm being honest, I always thought 'goomah' was just the female version of the slang word 'goomba'.

Eric

Jonathan Eaton

There is a cheese called Havarti. That is what Carmella's mom was referencing when calling Janice a cheese now that she calls herself Pavarti.

Juan Sanchez

You guys should watch Marty supreme its by the same guy that directed uncut gems

PastaDon

Wow that was weird, for real got the biggest whiff of charcoal and lighter fluid when Tony lit that grill.. sucks still got like 4 months before we can do any of that

SJB

Christopher's relationship to Tony: he is related through marriage, as Christopher is a cousin, once removed, to Carmela. It's not unusual to refer to this relation as a nephew/niece/uncle/aunt. We do it in my family. Also, don't forget Jackie Aprile was referred to by Meadow and AJ as "uncle Jackie," even though he's only a distant relative.

Snuggelbum

HELL YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, IMMA 'BOUT TO YOINK MY GABBAGOOL OMG

Life in the cave of Garanoga

Tony calls Christopher his nephew in the same way very close cousins or even friends might genuinely call each other brothers. Chris is Tony's first cousin once removed, His father is Camela's first cousin. I think they briefly mention it in S1, Carmela says something like "His father's my cousin....". When the show aired you weren't supposed to know Tony's mom was that evil, that was a reveal in the last episode of S1. But they did also set it up so people would be on the fence about it so there were people who guessed it or even felt like it was obvious. But there were also people who thought is was obvious she was just old and confused, they were just wrong lol. I feel most people were like me and knew she was manipulating people but didn't realize she was THAT evil until the last episode or two.

Snuggelbum

yeah i agree, Carmela is one big hypocrite. it's weird though, and maybe it's just me who is slightly fucked up in the brain, but for some reason, i've always felt slightly more sympathetic towards Carmela in this show, compared to Skyler in Breaking Bad, even though Skyler took more responsibility. guess maybe Carmela is just more likeable? dunno

Snuggelbum

ditto! please, no more pauses lmao

Snuggelbum

well, her character was written and played to be absolutely despicable to just about everyone lmao. not even her children could love such a creature.

G P

Noticed with this and a few other recent videos - the video stream cuts out about 30s-1min before the end of the episode while you guys are still reacting to it

Anonymous Andy

I do agree that Livia is a bad person, so on a purely intellectual level I get not feeling bad for her, but it’s hard to not feel sorry for a geriatric and generally defenseless person being at the mercy of her greedy, potentially murderous daughter.

Jonathan Eaton

Yes George, the same two people DID walk passed twice.

djKENTO

that's another C to a G! It was cumpa from Cumpari meaning a close friend or companion. C to G with the regional dialect and BOOM! Cumpa to Goombah.

Ari Ramirez

Oh you're gonna love Janice

photos_by_geoff

"Guy walks into a psychiatrist office and gets all the answers he needs." There is a joke without needing a type of specific person. That one's for you George. LOL

REDR58

There’s no rule you can’t do outdoor winter grilling!

REDR58

Simone and George, Silvio was quoting lines from “The Godfather Part III” as well as the first and second movies. There were also several references to that movie in the first season. You really should get onto watching Part III ASAP because you might get spoiled with other things that are mentioned in the Sopranos about that movie.

PastaDon

For us guys, yeah there is.. it's called Rule #1 Make sure your nuts are warm and happy

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

The word for "mistress" they use is "goomah" George used "Gabagool" as a placeholder. Lets just split the difference and say it's a "Gabagoomah" I got gabagool related puns, all day...

PIG

Logical. I’m just poor I guess :(

REDR58

Man, you got a tough it out! My brother-in-law in North Carolina was outside making pizzas in his outdoor oven when he was getting 10 inches of snow over the weekend.

REDR58

Guy Walks into a Psychiatrist's Office... I do not miss massive cathode ray tube monitors. I know there’s a lot people playing with vintage tech, but I if I never use them again to be too soon. The “Anthony Wayne” Hotel, where Melfi is working is a reference to the US Revolutionary War general “Mad” Anthony Wayne. The B&W movie on the TV that Christopher is watching is “Key Largo” (1948) with Edward G. Robinson and Humphrey Bogart. A guy named “Philly” should never live in New Jersey. The late David Margulies, as Neil Mink who comes to meet Tony in the club played the mayor of New York City in the Ghostbusters movies. Adriana was definitely talking about Christopher taking drugs. He was doing lines of cocaine in the beginning of the show. “Do Not Resuscitate” At the start of WWII, in the US, men ebetween the ages of 21 to 45 were eligible, but after the attack on Pearl Harbor this was changed from 18 to 64 as eligible, but only men as old as 45 were actually drafted to serve in combat roles. The police officer found an abandoned car and hairpiece that belonged to the owner of the retirement community. “Mario lasagna” is referring to Mario Lanza (1921-1959) a singer and actor: https://youtu.be/kJZ2XA84MPI?si=kFZI1EZWchNvmvZw Meadow’s name recollection was a little off. Janice later brings some of Lanza’s music when she goes to see her mother. When Anthony comes to visit his grandmother, she’s watching celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse on TV Pinochle is a card game: https://bicyclecards.com/how-to-play/pinochle-2

JBK405

Chris and those two numbskulls have essentially the same relationship that Tony has with Chris: They're too eager to move up, too excited to be "real" gangsters, that they do stupid things and make everything harder than it has to be. Tony spent a lot of time trying to get Chris to wise up, and now we see whether or not the lessons sank in and if Chris can pass them on. The film "Analyze This" that the other psychiatrist mentioned came out in 1999, and had a very similar plot to this series. Robert De Niro plays a mob figure who starts having panic attacks, so he begins seeing a psychiatrist. It came out a few months after the show started, so a lot of people were pointing fingers that one or the other was a ripoff. To my knowledge it's only a coincidence, but the similarities are definitely weird. Janice's personality really shines through in episode two, and she's just Livia 2.0. The exact same self-centered manipulation: Nothing matters -- there's no truth or lies -- as long as she gets what she wants. The moment that crystalized it for me wasn't the falling-down-the-stairs sign, it was her NAME: She has every right to change her name to "Parvati", and she has every right to change it back to "Janice" if she wants. She doesn't need to justify the change to anybody else, or even to us as the audience. But she DOESN'T "change" it back to Janice, she just pretends it always was Janice and laughs off her mother talking about it. Because right now it benefits her to be seen as the dutiful daughter, so everything else simply doesn't matter. Everything is re-written right in the moment, because she wants something. Livia has been saying "daughters are better at taking care of their mothers" from the very beginning. Even before she and Tony had the falling out, when Janice hadn't been here for years and Barbara was an infrequent visitor. She first said it in the pilot episode. It's always just been a way for her to ground down on Tony, and she hasn't let up...until it serves her purpose to do so.

Collinson

On the Olivia question I do think it's hard to remember your first watch impressions as I've watched this series so many times. But between my friends who also love the show it's about 50-50 between those who say they saw her as evil from day one to those who felt the same as yourselves.

Carlos H

Gabagoomah?, ova here👇

michael denny

Spoiler!- hey I've watched this show dozens of times and I just realized Janice trashed Livias house in 2-01 initially not high school kids. only took 20 plus years omg.

Brandon

The question is do we prefer the original version or the "Coda" version of Godfather III? I like the ending of the original better, but the Coda does a few other things better. So I'm pretty torn.

Relic

Final episode of season 1 George was asking when are we going to meet Tony's sisters. Well, George, meet Janice.

Relic

Uncle Junior has the best lines on the show.

Angzarr

A guy walks into a psychiatrist's office. "Doc, you gotta help me!" he says, "I'm having these recurring dreams where I'm a teepee, then a wigwam, then a teepee, the a wigwam. It's driving me crazy!" "You need to relax," says the psychiatrist, "You're two tents." And then there was the moth that went into a podiatrist's office... IYKYK

Haye Zeus

George’s frustration with Janice makes me happy, cause I can relate. I think there is that one family member that you really not want to see and they frustrate the hell out of you. That’s also why I love Janice as a character. She just makes me laugh cause it’s so real.

REDR58

On balance… Coda version.

MacGuffinStuff

Meadow was definitely stoned too, the stop sign, coming back from her driving lesson to pick up weed for Janice. Remember how you used to have no choice but to sit and chill with the dealer? Most of them were cool, every once in a while it was like that scene in Boogie Nights with the firecrackers and shit. Pineapple Express did such a good portrayal of that to me. I have too many Janice's In my family lol, well just my mom's side, my dad's side is pretty cool. But that is one of the great things about this show is how I can relate to the characters that way, And then all that interpersonal family drama spills over and out and then affects the politics of the organization and sumnsumn butterfly effect. Also,, Did you catch "Get out of my life!", Lorraine Bracco Karen in Goodfellas.

Alex Leach

Chris is the son of mafia soldier Dickie Moltisanti, and is Carmela’s cousin - I don’t believe he is related to Tony except by marriage.

G B

Parvati lmao

Life in the cave of Garanoga

Yeah Tony isn't blood related to him. Carmela's father is the brother of Christopher's grandmother.

Glenner7

Now that the dragon lady's gone they'll Dwayne to set foot in her house :-)

Bran the Blazed

Once again drugged/drunk Simone is funniest Simone

Angzarr

I always suspected that "Analyze This" was inspired at least in part by Martin's relationship with his therapist in Grosse Pointe Blank, and perhaps this show was as well in some way.

Angzarr

I can totally imagine this continues on and blends into Zager and Evans' "In the Year 2525" 😆

p0sthum4n

The women on the side are a "goomar", from "cumare". The Italian dialect they slip into is based on Sicilian, and it softens consonants and cuts off final vowels. Ricotta becomes rigot, pasta becomes past (pahst), cumare becomes goomar, "vai a fanculo" becomes "va fangool", capicolla becomes gabagool, sfogliatella becomes shfooyadel, braciole becomes "brajol", and so on.

Shibby

Please don't spoil things by saying stuff like this.

Angela D. Mitchell

Thank you for this! I always wondered about the distinctive syntax to the Italian on this show.

Angela D. Mitchell

Simone, I hope your shoulder feels better soon -- that was brutal to hear! I loved the beautiful "It Was a Very Good Year" opening to season 2 -- it's so lyrical and cinematic. It's gentle and brutal at the same time -- life goes on, people are who they are. I felt so bad for Melfi here, holding meetings with clients in hotel rooms. And I loved her righteous anger in her takedown of Tony. I always appreciate that she is willing to be so blunt and honest with him, even if we can see that she is frequently intimidated by him and scared by him and his world. George, I have Janice-like family members too, and ugh -- I find her very hard to watch. The transparent and self-serving calculation is so gross to me. Everything she does is transactional so nothing is simply "nice" -- it's because she wants something or wants to use someone. Like even in the scene with Meadow here, she's just playing Meadow to use her like a chesspiece between Livia and Tony. Ugh. But even though Janice is transparently using Livia, I still hate Livia so much that I am enjoying watching her being used -- although it was amusing that she knew Janice so well that at first she was aware of it. Meanwhile, it was so sad to me that Christopher hit Adriana like that -- I mean, yeah, she slapped him back, which is something, but it was also just business as usual. She wasn't even that angry at him.

Dimitri

I can't wait to hear Simone's recorder rendition of the Sopranos intro. I fully expect it to be a great accompanying piece to the world renowned flute rendition of the 20th century fox intro!

G B

Where's the spoiler? Enlighten me so I can edit and be sure to be more careful in the future.

G B

On second thought, I can possibly see the issue. While I don't agree, my apologies, and I've edited the comment.

Shibby

No worries, I understand it's not a direct spoiler but it can still hint at things to come and I personally prefer to be completely in the dark.

G B

I totally agree! Thanks!

Jason Harris

In case no one else commented yet, Christopher is actually Tony's cousin on Carmela's side, but he calls him his "nephew" out of affection.

Kevin Rogers

Correct. Carmellas father, and Christophers grandmother, are brother and sister.

Ceruleo

Street boss isn't a demotion. Technically, the head of the family is Ercole DiMeo who was sentenced to life shortly before the show. Jackie Aprille Sr. became acting boss/street boss, who was succeeded by Junior officially, and now by Tony.
