"Hi Tawny, I'm horny". How the hell do I remember that line from so many years ago. Oh.... yeah. 10/10 thumbnail again. You guys are the GOAT of youtube thumbnails.

Vellu

Comedy recommendations: Top Secret! (1984), Val Kilmers breakout role Loaded Weapon 1 (1993), Leathal Weapon spoof

Christina Doxstader

The guy trying to mug them and he just pushes the gun away always makes me laugh.

Jeff K.

No exaggeration, I believe Terry Keyser’s performance in this is genuinely one of the greatest physical comedy performances ever.

ArcadeAndy

George, if we bury you ass up we'll have a place to park my bike. I am not at all sure how this reaction is going to go, but I am excited for it!

Smooticus

I remember when this movie came out, the trailer was like 8 minutes long and showed all the funny parts. When we saw it, we already knew all the jokes, so the movie pretty much sucked. I tried watching it a few times after that on cable, video and dvd, but teh results were the same. Sadly, i'm going to pass on this one

maikeru

Interesting that this was directed by Ted Kotcheff, who I always will remember as the guy who directed First Blood. I think I never watched something else he directed, I also didn't know he did comedies. I found out recently that he died last year.

DaveJ

Andrew Mccarthy is fairly recognisable from a lot of 80's movies. Less Than Zero is one I really love. It also has James Spader and Robert Downey Jr in it.

jmundt33a

I’ve always been a Mannequin fan.

Zedarion

this and the second one is kinda my childhood favorite movies, you must watch the second one, it's in my opinion even better.

jmundt33a

In honor of this movie and Groundhog Day, may I suggest 12:01 a sci-fi time loop romance starring Jonathan Schaeh and Helen Slater.

jmundt33a

Also, Secret of My Success as a big business romcom. Michael J. Fox, Helen Slater, Margot Whitton, Carol Ann Susi, and Bruce McGill.

Robert Cooper

It's funny to me that this movie is basically a classic now. "Weekend and Bernie's" was shorthand for "dumb movie" for a long time, and I think the fact that it slipped into the lexicon gave it status. It's like Rick rolling made a forgettable pop hit a cultural touchstone.

Mastervodo

This reminds me: Recommending St. Elmo's Fire!

Jacob Colson

George & Simone, will y'all ever get to Cars 2 & 3? And by some chance, is the movie Phone Booth with Colin Farrell on y'all's list? (DON'T LOOK AT THE POSTER! It reveals a character in the movie that should've been a surprise.)

Mubiki

I'm becoming increasingly concerned that it still appears as if Simone's guiding star for normal human behavior is what happened on Sex and the City.... Hahaha

Hamesque

Always remember to check the year of an event you plan to go to in January

Kyle B

I recently introduced my wife to a double feature viewing of Weekend at Bernies, and the Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Keith David movie Men at Work.

Happy Hanukkah

For those unfamiliar, St. Elmo's Fire (1985) is one of the prominent "Brat Pack" movies. Besides this movie's Andrew McCarthy, it also features Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Mare Winningham, and Andie MacDowell. As well as Martin Balsam. It was director Joel Schumacher's (last seen here with Falling Down) breakthrough film. Much more of a popular than a critical success.

keoma songs

Has anyone mentioned that there was a sequel, Weekend At Bernie's II ? I never managed to see it, it's been hard to get a hold of for years, but I've heard it does have it's fans, and yes Bernie's back apparently

Mastervodo

And awesom3 soundtrack. At least 2 songs.

Mike FromOz

He also directed "Wake in Fright", which is possibly the best movie about Australia ever. He really nailed it. It's just been re-released in 4k Blu-ray after a lost print was found. It's a hard watch, but is absolutely brilliant.

Lanny Stanfield

Such an impressively silly movie with great gags.

DesolationEntertained

I've seen it, and I remember there were a few bits that seemed worth seeing (but not memorable enough for details 30 years later i guess). You might wonder if there's something clever about how the main plot continues, and I would say that isn't the case, so it's all for the moments.

Angzarr

More than that, he's Richard's dad at 42:27! Yes, that's right, you've all now seen the director of Rambo in his underwear.

maikeru

@Mike sounds interesting, I'll watch it, thanks.

BigGuy209

I remember the entire plot of the sequel. I think I’ve seen the second one more than I’ve seen the original. It was a Comedy Central channel staple. Basically Larry and Richard use Bernie to find buried treasure by using music. It’s not very well received it as more hate but I kind of dig it more than the original cause I’ve seen it so much.

BigGuy209

Men at Work that’s a good one.

Jose Robles

the crazy part is this movie has a second part, I remember it was ok, from my memories of 20 mire years ago, but definitive it jump the shark

jmundt33a

The later, less famous use of that song.

Paul T Hewes

Ah, Rachel Green's favorite movie. She says is "Dangerous Liasons" but its really this one.

Dan

Since you mention the Mandela effect, the only time I've experienced it myself is with respect to a movie you'll be watching soon: Moonraker. I won't give details, of course, but there's something I thought I remembered from watching it as a child that just isn't the case. But it kinda makes sense because (though it's not a big deal) it's an obvious thing they probably should have done and even at least one contemporary review mentions it! So I and apparently a lot of other people just filled it in in their memories.

Happy Hanukkah

Donnie wishes to share that he comes from a land down under.

REDR58

Less Than Zero (1987) is really good and should be watched.

Dave Jacob

This is a classic in our family and I am thrilled you guys enjoyed it as much as we do! I even love the sequel. Although absurd, it is fun and hilarious as well. Definitely recommend.

Angzarr

It's a much smarter movie than people give it credit for. As George points out, it manages to make everything make sense, which is unusual for a movie like this. It's really well written.

Angzarr

100%! As Simone points out, it is NOT easy to do!

Jon Johns

Lol, you two are SOOO old 🤣. Worrying about all the wrong things at the start of the movie 😂. The smudged paper, the dirty shoes 😂. Why a corporation would greedily turn off the air con on the weekend... You're so kind, thoughtful, considerate, and caring. This movie was made for obnoxious selfish teenagers. I hated it when it came out because I was a 60 year old trapped in a 17 year old body, saying all the same things that you were! 🤣

R. Chang

Seeing Catherine Mary Stewart reminded me of another 80's classic that you guys should check out - The Last Starfighter. Along with Tron, one of the early pioneers in computer generated images in film.

Shawnie

When George said he wanted his ass taxidermied… I picture them having mech shirts saying “ Tax That Ass” 🤣

Raymond DeGraw

Great reaction... I always loved this movie. I would be interested to see you react to another Andrew McCarthy movie, "Mannequin" with Kim Cattrall.

Angzarr

This has always been a "remote drop" movie for me, and it used to play all the time on HBO back in the day. Every time I watch it I am shocked at how well written and executed it is, and how many great gags are packed into it. I also marvel at Terry Kiser's performance. Re: "I don't think [the two leads] are adults pretending to be teens". As you say at the end, it was almost the other way around with Corey Haim and Corey Feldman as the leads. Thankfully clearer heads prevailed! This cast is SO good and has great chemistry. The director of this movie also directed First Blood. Quite a tonal shift! And as you say he's also Richard's Dad in the underwear. Really cast himself in a primo role, eh? According to the cast his most frequent direction was "Not funny enough. Do it again!", which reminds me of Peter Farrelly's direction to Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear to "suck less." Business shorts: this reminds me of an old parody "Sharper Edge" style catalog called Pippa Garner's Better Living Catalog (AKA Philip Garner's Better Living Catalog). You can still find it on Amazon for $8 or so. It's full of crazy stuff like a short sleeve men's business suit with dress shorts, and an off-the-shoulder men's dress shirt. My favorite is the necktie with a pocket. Someday I will have one of those made for me... 41:34 You were talking and missed one of my favorite jokes, where Richard says his parents died in a train accident, she says "I always thought trains were so much safer than planes", and he replies "Well, actually... a plane fell on the train." Such a ridiculous and unnecessary lie! Actually, for years I've been trying to remember where that joke was from, and just a couple of weeks ago I did exhaustive searching and LLM queries trying to figure it out and failed. So now I'm extra pleased that you watched this movie! 1:17:18 Andrew McCarthy bought a Monopoly set and had been playing by himself to keep entertained during filming. It was his idea for Larry to play (and cheat!) Bernie at Monopoly to flesh out that scene.

Stephanie Bedworth

I don't enjoy this movie quite as much as used to back when it first came out but that scene of Bernie washing up onto the beach with his head turned, staring right at them, will never not be hysterical.

Jonathan Eaton

For more Andrew McCarthy watch Class (1983), St Elmo's Fire (1985), Less Than Zero (1987)

Will Sofer

A lot of 80s movies haven’t aged that well. With some obvious exceptions. Rose-tinted glasses and all, I suppose.

mpd

The sequel is a Gene pick, but Gene's trash

Brandon

Vincent! Don't... don't shut me out! 😭

Boba Fettuccine

This was a fun rewatch for me. I haven't seen this since it was in theaters back when I was about 10 year old. It's one of the few movies my whole family went to see. I still reference it today. Any time my parents fall asleep while I'm driving I tell them that people are gonna think I'm pulling a double "Weekend at Bernie's."

Brandon

Great reaction, guys. I'm pretty sure my Mom still has the VHS tape she used to record this movie off of City TV in the early 90's. 😆 Andrew McCarthy (Larry) still does some acting, but might be more known for directing work now. He's directed a lot of episodes of various TV shows like 'Orange is the New Black'. He also has a supporting role in an EXCELLENT Canadian comedy/drama 'New Waterford Girl', which would make for a great reaction IMO. He's also in the movie 'Heaven Help Us', an underrated 80's movie that's set in a 1950's Catholic boy's school. The only other things I've seen Jonathan Silverman in are 'Caddyshack 2', and the 90's sitcom 'The Single Guy'. I haven't seen Single Guy since it was on in the 90's but I remember watching it because it came on right before Seinfeld.

Gerald Walker

The actor who played Bernie was Terry Kiser, a long-time NY character and theater actor. This was his first major starring role and he got a nice career bump from these flicks (Holy Moly, I just checked wikipedia..he's 86 and still with us ..Fantastic!)

Jordy's_Here!

So overjoyed that you guys loved this one!!! One of my all time favorite comedies and a masterclass in this style of physical comedy.

Stephanie Bedworth

Andrew Mccarthy (Larry) is probably best known for Pretty in Pink, one of John Hughes super popular teen movies in the 80's. Jonathon Silverman, who played Rich, was in a really good coming of age drama/comedy that I saw years ago called Brighton Beach Memoirs.

REDR58

And more than 140 credited roles in his career.

REDR58

"Revenge of the Nerds" comes to mind...

REDR58

Speaking of cold weather, it got down to -4°F (-20° Celsius) on January 21st. Just about a year earlier, it got down to -6°F (-21° Celsius). That’s the coldest I’ve ever recorded with my weather station here at home. The opening titles for this movie really look like something from an early-to-mid 1980s TV sitcom and the opening sequence “feels” very TV. I wonder if that’s intended as a contrast with the beach house scenes which feel a bit more filmic and opulent. Canadian actor Catherine Mary Stewart, from Edmonton, Alberta, plays Gwen and she is in a fun movie called “The Last Starfighter” (1984) and as already noted below, that would make a good reaction movie. She was about 29 here and a *bit* too old to be playing someone headed off to college! But she was great in the movie. The director, the late Ted Kotcheff, was also Canadian, from Toronto. Tina (Catherine Parks), Vito’s girlfriend who is having the not-so-secret liason with Bernie, is wearing “wrist cuffs” on her wrists at the restaurant! In some US states, at least, the public can access any part of the beach up to a point. This seems to be the case in the State of New Jersey (https://dep.nj.gov/publicaccess/faq/) and in North Carolina, (where the movie was filmed) but as far as I can tell, in the Hamptons (the movie was set on the fictional “Hampton Island”) this is not necessarily so. The Roy Lichtenstein artwork briefly seen is called “Reclining Bather” (1977) and I’m going to assume it was a reproduction: https://www.lichtensteincatalogue.org/catalogue/entry.php?id=903 I was watching very carefully and Terry Kiser who played Bernie did an excellent job of holding his breath! The lighthouse seen in the movie is called “Old Baldy” and can be toured: www.oldbaldy.org George, that was actually “Chapterhouse: Dune” (1985) on Bernie’s bookshelf. So this was a first time watch for me, yet another in a long list of 1980s movies I somehow never saw as a kid. Quite enjoyable and much more interesting than I was expecting.

Aric Heintzelman

I'm not the most punctual person, so people are always telling me I'm going to be late for my own funeral. When I die, they're not going to wheel me out until fifteen minutes after the funeral's supposed to start.

Daniel Lanctot

Weekend at Bernie’s is a classic 80’s situational comedy; the kind they just don’t make anymore, but SHOULD!… If you want more like this, I highly recommend the 1987 movie: “Mannequin”!

Jacob Colson

Kinda surprised Simone didn't mention Friends in connection with this movie. lol

Tim Boxall

There should be on Oscar category created for "Best Dead Body" simply so Terry Kiser can win it.

funky weapon

Paulie shooting Bernie while giving him the Evil Eye hand gesture is the funniest damn thing I've seen this week. hot damn I was wheezing.

David Zabel

Weekend at Bernie's is definitely one of those hidden gems that doesn't get near the credit it deserves. Just a fun movie with a fun premise. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the sequel. Don't waste your time with that one.

Eric Wilson

Now you guys have to watch weekend at Bernies 2 which might be the funnier of the two.

Eric Wilson

I think the second one is a bit funnier even.

David Zabel

Another one of those underrated fun movies.

Andrew

It was funny you brought up Ferris Bueller a couple times. Jonathan Silverman was in the film version of “Brighton Beach Memoirs”, a Neil Simon play that Matthew Broderick originated on Broadway.

Steve kephart

I'm dissapointed in George. After Simone's "in another dimension" story, he should have asked her how her brothers surgery went. Really make her think she is in another alternate dimension.

Polecat21

just a note on the funeral discussion - remember they're not really for the person who passed away. they're for the friends and family. I remember my father in law was one of those who thought they were stupid and didn't want one when he passed away. they family tried to honor his wishes but something was needed The actual funeral part is usually sad but in my opinion its the after funeral get together that helps the most. although it wasn't a funeral (so I guess you could say his wishes were honored) everyone got together a week or 2 later. it really helps to be with others and in my experience, it always turns more joyful as people share stories. the most common phrases being "remember when he" or "remember when we"........

DaveJ

Totally! I think im long overdue for a rewatch of it

Drew Acheson

Jonathan Silverman (Richard) was very famous for a short time in the 90s. He had his own primetime sitcom called The Single Guy and a few of my favorite movies he is in are Death Becomes Her (which you should DEFINITELY watch) and 12:01 which is a time loop movie that may or may not have been a direct to VHS movie but was still a good time.

Chris Foster

I remember going to an early screening of this, not knowing anything about it. The whole theatre had a great time.

JoeNotCharles

Hah, Rick-rolling's a great metaphor, cause everybody remembers it as "that really cheesy song that everybody knows as a meme", but if you sit down and listen to it, it's actually a really well-constructed song that's better than anyone remembers. Replace "song" with "movie" and you've got Weekend At Bernie's.

PrimitiveCruisingArtist

Yeah, Andrew McCarthy was a thing for a while back in the day. Pretty in Pink. This. St. Elmo's Fire. Less Than Zero. (Good novel, meh movie, except you get to see a stoned young Iron Man being stoned like he was in real life at the time... heh.)

FranciscoGios

This type of cult classics you don’t see in Hollywood today anymore, this is the movies us 80s kids were watching before we were introduced to Jim Carrie. I was gonna be disappointed if you guys weren’t happy of watching it; but it still holds its gesture to a dead body. What I remember about the two actors is they were already famous but not much because no internet was yet out there, but check out the ones the Patreons here are requesting from this actors they are not bad tittles nor bad movies.

Rupert Purcat

-37 dego's C ? I think Canadia knows real measuring units. Just for balance its + 37 dego's here in Aus. At my sisters in central NSW they were at 45 - 47 most of the week. Some places are even hotter. Mmmm not even comfy if we averaged our temps. Stay safe in the arctic.

REDR58

But is it a dry heat??

REDR58

Another dimension, another dimension.

Eversharpe

That's the fun of Montreal, you also get those temps in the summer with the humidex.

bdennis2004

You gotta learn how to sell it. Say Kim Cattrall is in it and Simone will have it on the schedule next week!

Mike FromOz

You go outside in those temps, and you can feel yourself desiccating. Crackly crispy sound.

Life in the cave of Garanoga

George with the Leisure Suit Larry reference for the win lol I forgot how good the writing in this movie was. It's a shame that more people don't give it a chance just because they see the gimmick and think it will be just stupid. Such a fun movie.

Stephanie Bedworth

I guess Simon did three plays with that character. Broderick starred in the second play and film version of Biloxi Blues, and the third play, Broadway Bound, Silverman played Eugene again.

WUStLBear82

Andrew McCarthy was a member of the Brat Pack in the '80s, but not any of Brat Pack movies you have seen. I like 'Class' (1983) with Rob Lowe. Simone thought Jonathan Silverman looked like David Schwimmer; they were in fact friends and classmates at Beverly Hills High School and Silverman guest-starred on 'Friends' ('The One with the Birth'). Catherine Mary Stewart is the daughter of two faculty members at the University of Alberta and best known for 'The Last Starfighter' and 'Night of the Comet'.

Kevin Rogers

Amazing movie! Now you guys need to watch Mannequin if you want another legendary movie from "Larry"!

Farbod

Makes me sad that Andrew McCarthy isn't better known. Adore him.

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

George freezing his buttcheeks in carbonite, or whatever the real world equivalent would be, to be displayed as a memorial after his death is pretty metal actually. Near it, an old man will sit in a rocking chair telling stories from the times of old, with children gathered around him sitting on the floor.

Roddy Hutchinson

Such good memories of this movie, My father absolutely loved it!

YourBigBut

I am a little surprised Simone did not bring up this movie being referenced, a couple of times, in Friends.

Brien

God I cannot wait to see Simone's reaction to the 1st episode of Season 4 of Stranger Things. Gonna be epic!

Jon Burrows

I’m hiring a ventriloquist for my funeral to mess with people near my casket.

jmundt33a

Porky’s. Sixteen Candles. *sigh*

Mary Ann Morgan

Great reaction. You two had me laughing out loud even though I’ve seen this movie several times. Andrew McCarthy who plays Larry, if you want to see two examples of his work that are totally different than this AND different from each other, please watch “Class” which I believe was his first movie and also stars a very young Rob Lowe. Very good movie. And then Andrew was part of the “brat pack” of the 80s that wasn’t in very many of the movies like Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy or Emilio Estevez. The movie that starts lots of them with Andrew is “ St Elmo’s Fire” out of those two I like class the best of myself. I sure hope you watch them

gfixler

It would have been hilarious if the actor who played Bernie was in 3 or 4 other films, always as a dead guy, or statue or something.

gfixler

The actor would played Bernie looks so much like my dad in the 80s—same hair, same 'stache, except his face is smaller, and his cranium is larger. It's like if you took my dad's face and scrunched it down and lowered it.

gfixler

I noticed in the opening credits that the music was created by Andy Summers, from The Police ("Message in a Bottle", "Roxanne", "Don't Stand So Close to Me", "Every Breath You Take", "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic", etc.). I could feel a bit of their style at various points. Also liked Bernie's artwork upstairs, straight out of the Memphis style I loved as a kid in the 80s. You see it during the shootout scene.

Angela D. Mitchell

Andrew McCarthy was Larry, not Richard -- he was an 80s guy -- the romantic interest in Pretty in Pink, and he also had some hits with Class and St. Elmo's Fire. He was also really good later on in a supporting role in The Joy Luck Club. Jonathan Silverman (Richard) moved on to supporting roles, which makes sense to me because for me, he doesn't have a leading man's charisma at all. But he worked a lot, so good for him. And Catherine Mary Stewart was fun here in a thankless role as Gwen -- she is best known for the cult 80s hits The Last Starfighter and Night of the Comet. Terry Kiser was the MVP though, and this got him a lot of attention, which he richly deserved. His expressions and physical comedy work were so funny. Meanwhile, I forgot that George reacted so strongly to Ferris Bueller that he actually thinks he's the villain! I really still disagree. I think Ferris planned a day to save the life of his near-suicidal best friend Cameron. And Cameron himself calls him out on this: "You knew what you were doing when you woke up this morning, didn't you?" (Not to mention that Ferris instantly offers to take the blame for the car at the end, which is all the proof I needed that he loves and cares for Cameron.) Anyway-- this was cute, but it's been 20 years since I saw it, and turns out I won't need another rewatch for another 20 or more. But the motorboat scene was classic.

Ryan Towell

A lot of Larrys stuff was improvised including the I get yelled at when I just lay there and the monopoly scene w/ the fly swatter. He talked about it a bit in his book. Andrew was one of my favorites in the 80s he normally played a straight guy (more serious) but his comedy rolls were so great. This and Mannequin he was great.
