100%. Vastly superior film.

Ashton Lewis

Yeah I'm surprised we got this before Contagion to be honest. Awesome film

Ian West

The dedication to giving as realistic a portrayal as possible of what would actually happen in a deadly pandemic is what makes it hit so much harder.

2026-09-13 17:00 It surprised me how many people don't know there was a Covid pandemic in 1918 and lasted for 3 years. Requiring masks and distancing.

Jedi Lounger

As others have suggested, Contagion (2011) is much more accurate, and terrifying. if you want even more beyond that, the adaptation of The Hot Zone (2019) starring Julianna Margulies (season 1) is really good. Contagion might trigger 2020 flashbacks and PTSD though lol.

Cc Decc

Here's the thing about Contagion -- it is amazingly prescient. So many moments that just felt like absolute spot on predictions after we went through Covid. I was incredibly impressed at its restrained intelligence. But the choices Soderbergh made in shooting Contagion made me question how this could be the same director who did the swaggering Ocean's Eleven or Magic Mike. Contagion is so restrained its almost boring. Everything is quiet all the time. Spectacle is non-existent. And that's why I voted for Outbreak rather than Contagion -- its just more entertaining and exciting to react to. Outbreak's initial science BTW is actually good too. Its an obvious Ebola parallel. Where it decided to go big and Hollywood is in the geopolitics.

Cc Decc

You mean the Spanish flu epidemic that killed millions?

Christina Doxstader

Amazing performances throughout the movie but my favorite scene is, I assume the President's Chief of Staff (J.T. Walsh who was also in Pleasantville), telling the people in that room how things are going to go down if Clean Sweep happens. It's so powerful and realistic.

Lloyd Franklin

Simone, you need to watch a great Cuba Gooding Jr film called Men of Honour.

Guthwulf

Agreed... that's the way more realistic and scary movie. For its time I still liked Outbreak thx to great performances and the overall setting even if it devolves into Hollywood action movie logic in the last act.

Joel

Don't you DARE change your thumbnail style, I LOVE IT

Andrew

You guys should watch The Andromeda Strain. George would love that movie.

JayF

I've recommended these movies before but wanted to point them out again as they feature people from this movie. Donald Sutherland - Body Snatchers, Backdraft (this one has an amazing stacked cast, directed by Ron Howard. You will both love it)f Cuba Gooding Jr - Radio Renee Russo - Get Shorty (another stacked cast, you will both love it) Morgan Freeman - Amistad (another stacked cast, a tough watch because of the subject matter but you will both love it) Edit - Saw the Dustin Hoffman discussion after the movie a bit later. For him - Tootsie, Midnight Cowboy, Papillon, or Little Big Man (a personal favorite of mine) would be good.

REDR58

I just watched for the first time about two or three months ago. It’s really good!

Jay Davis

Yeah, George is right about the tone. Don't get me wrong. I like this movie and I've watched it many, MANY more times than I'd be willing to admit in the company of any snobby film critic type friends (if I had any friends of that type). It's a very fun movie. It's got a great cast. Lots of star power. Lots of Hollywood flash.... buuut For that reason, I hope they do get around to reacting to Contagion. It takes a similar subject and, while also bringing a similar rack of star power to the story, it goes hard. I've been infected by that film since I first saw it. Pun intented. Another suggestion for its willingness to 'be real' about the topic and for its added social commentary is HBO's 1993 movie And the Band Played On. That one probably hits harder for my generation though and might not feel as relatable today. But it's great. Won't come away from either of those feeling good but they are VERY good movies in this corner.

Simon

They HAVE to watch Contagion now. They want prescient reality to covid? That is THE film to watch. Outbreak is, as George kinda put it, a Roland Emmerich film compared to Contagion.

WayneC

Wolfgang Petersen is, perhaps, best known for "Das Boot". Another Petersen directed film you have reacted to is "Airforce One".

Andrew

I've been a huge Michael Crichton fan since I was a teenager so I saw this movie a long time ago. I think it's still considered one of the most accurate movies in this genre.

Eddy V Ruiz II

I highly recommend this book for a light read The Pessimist's Guide to History: An Irresistible Compendium of Catastrophes, Barbarities, Massacres, and Mayhem—From 14 Billion Years Ago to 2007

Young Blood Priest

When this movie came out there were out breaks of Ebola and I think hantavirus so it was taken seriously when it came out. Morgan Freeman played a violent pimp in a 70s movie and in another movie I won’t spoil by naming.

ChiefKC

For more Cuba Gooding Jr, watch "Men of Honor". it's a story about Master Chief Brashear.

Matt O'Keefe

I watched this a lot on HBO in the late 90's. Who has read The Hot Zone? Scary book.

By Grapthar's Hammer, what a member!

Spacey's character getting infected and not telling anyone reminds of all the zombie movies where one of the group gets bit and hides it.

blerbaberpaterb

yaaa except with zombie movies the people who pretend are just regular people. spaceys character is literally a virologist, specialized in super deadly viruses, AND hes been working with it for weeks at that point. its crazy he then didnt say anything...

Joel

Not only did I read it, I actually live in the DMV area, where Reston is, I've been to that office park

Cc Decc

Heh -- I had forgotten that they arrived back in town and had 1 man cook up the anti-serum in two hours. :p Ah, Hollywood writers, its never clear where the scientific ignorance ends and the I don't give a f*** starts. Still though, we've been ending the Earth pretty consistently on this channel for months now. Heck, last week we were eating people. Between that and the animation that could be the channel's subtitle -- "Cinebinge -- Death & Cartoons". So...maybe it was time to lighten it up with a little old school Hollywood entertainment -- cute animals, evil government conspiracy, magic sciencey stuff -- type movie. Even a little romance-while-sweaty-and-covered-in-pustules. Helps break things up.

Cc Decc

Yeah, was surprised given that they recently watched him play an evil seamstress in Wanted.

Matt O'Keefe

Wow interesting. l grew up and still live in Virginia, but not near there.

Joel

Just creating another Contagion demand post, it must be done

djKENTO

About Cuba Gooding Jr... there aren't many movies of his left that are actually worth watching. He absolutely blew up his career with substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse against people around him, insane public outbursts... including a very famous one where he yells some WILD SHIT in public on the mic. Real hard to recover from that. If you REALLY want to watch his best work you have left it's What Dreams May Come, Men of Honor, As Good as It Gets and American Gangster. Everything after that is varying levels of straight to streaming garbage, box office flops, and films so lazy they feel like money laundering schemes or some kind of weird tax loophole scheme. He really hasn't made anything good in like 20 years.

David Hunter

This was one of those movies I saw as a kid around 10-12 and that monkey scene in the backyard with the girl has stuck with me literally since then.

Hamesque

Thank god the virus doesn't have passports and couldn't cross into Canada and Mexico

Cliff Endicott

The 1967 virus wasn't an army-manufactured virus, it was brought to the village by an animal that was driven out of the rainforest due to deforestation and the battles being fought there. That animal only had the non-airborne version of the virus, and after they had a sample of it they destroyed the village to use the virus as a bio-weapon. But there wasn't enough generations of the virus to mutate to the airborne version, so the monkey that infected Jimbo had BOTH viruses - the airborne and non-airborne versions. That's why the army wanted to bomb the city and eliminate the airborne version (which was the risk, as they already had the serum for the non-airborne version. Really fun movie - went to see it twice at the theater way beck when it was released. I know you have polls for most things, but you should check out the 1994 mini-series "The Stand" (not the 2020 version, it's awful). It tells the story of what could have happened in "Outbreak" if the virus had managed to spread wide. Great 4 part mini-series (with a great cast to boot).

Dirge Girl

The monkey _was_ in Friends... weird.

ChiefKC

Yes, it is the same Monkey. Her name is Katie and she has been acting for 30 years.

Jay Davis

I don't usually comment twice on a post... but does anyone else feel like that's just what Simone wears around the house every day when not filming?

dasgrove

This movie used to be a warning, now it feels like PTSD.

Lana Gorgeous

You also have to watch Kramer vs. Kramer, the role that got Dustin Hoffman the Oscar and also stars Meryl Streep in a great role for her.

Imtoooldforthisshit

I spend my Civil Service in a Hospital for tropical diseases back in 2000. I had the chance to attend a seminar about a big ebola outbreak back then . It Was held by one of "our" doktors who just returned from Afrika. The photos he showed there and the stories he told haunted me for some time. Horrific stuff.

Jose Robles

I think Outbreak is more 'realistic'

Lana Gorgeous

I saw it when it first came out, a film I saw right after 2020 was Contagion with Matt Damon, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne and Gwyneth Paltrow and that felt so real in 2020 with the COVID virus going on.

Jonathan Eaton

People should be asking YOU to do THEIR thumbnails. Not the other way around.

Simone's Coconut Squire

Yeah in the 90s, Ebola and similar global pandemics were the big boogeyman.

heidismiles

I love seeing actors in early roles like this (re: your reaction to Patrick Dempsey). I made the subreddit r/No_Small_Parts and it's all about that! You'd enjoy it!

Simone's Coconut Squire

There is actually one disease that has a 100% mortality rate: rabies. Although there have been recent developments and there may be one or two survivors now, it’s functionally 100% lethal which is why it’s so important to get shots if you possibly have been exposed.

Reed James

This movie might be inpsired by the 1989 outbreak of Simian Hemorratic Fever (monkey ebola) in Virginia. It was thought that the virus had jumped species into human from the monkeys. It caused quite the panic at the time.

Reed James

Maybe also the '89 simian hemmoratic fever outbreak in Virginia that for a few days was thought to have infected humans. Monkeys have their own strain of ebola.

Reed James

Yes, only the original 1994 miniseries. That's great. And a excellent adaptation of King's novel.

Reed James

And they're doing American Gangster for next week.

Jonathan Eaton

The first symptom is a desire to go to the airport.

Maria Forsström

For another "unusual" Morgan Freeman movie you should watch "Dreamcatcher" (2003). It is scifi-horror. It may not be the best of movies, but it is still entertaining. Creeped me out the first time I watched it, alone in the middle of the night!

Reed James

The suits use positive air pressure so when there is a rip, air doesn't rush. He honestly should have been fine. If he got stuck, that would be different, but hollywood. I mean, they whipped up a cure in an hour.

Reed James

Hot Zone Season 1 proably covers one of the incidents that inspired this movie. It's a dramatization of a real event that happened in 89

Kieran Hawk

I was in Spain in March 2020 when the panic and lockdown started. I remember thinking 'wait, I've seen this movie.' The movie was Contagion from 2011, and it is to Outbreak what Deep Impact is to Armageddon. It also has a stacked cast. Great film. George would love it. Logistics!

Paul T Hewes

I saw it in the theater. NO ONE coughed or sneezed after the movie scene. Was nuts.

FilmAsh

Watch "The People Vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" the closest thing to a redemption performance he's done since.

djKENTO

I think he's one of the weakest parts of the show. Even when it was new I remember everyone saying Travolta was the reason to watch. Sterling K Brown, Sarah Paulson and Courtney B Vance are acting circles around Gooding. They're all capturing those people... Gooding doesn't feel like OJ at all. I do think it's a good show and worth a watch, even a possible reaction cuz it's so wild and mostly captures how that era felt really well. And Simone will pop for Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian who is also great.

FilmAsh

Please do "In the Line of Fire" (it's the best Wolfgang Petersen film ever made, with Outbreak and Troy as runner ups) a great 90s cat and mouse thriller that pits Clint Eastwood vs John Malkovich; lots of great caper writing. Rene Russo is also in this and S will love the Clint Eastwood romance side plot. Also has the best villain performance/role John Malkovich has ever done and thats saying a lot. His specialty has always been smarminess that perfectly balances funny with scary but It might be the only movie where it is actually scarier than it is funny. Also the Wolfgang Petersen film you guys saw recently was neverending story.

Jonathan Eaton

Marathon Man (1976) thriller/action was the first Dustin Hoffman movie I ever saw and that's the character I've always associate with him.

OddThomas

For more Rene Russo: Ransom, In the Line of Fire. Dustin Hoffman: The Graduate, Sphere, Hook. Morgan Freeman: Dreamcatcher, Along Came a Spider. Donald Sutherland: JFK, Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

OddThomas

Seminal 90s thriller. Love In The Line of Fire. Peak Malkovich

Logan Kerlee

lmao, you two are great. I haven't watched this movie in like probably 10+ years. I first watched this in the 90's when it was new (while I was very young) and wasn't super scared of it then.. but it could give me different feelings now, after living in this world for so many years. :) Bad pun,, George - bad pun. :P This movie opens with a screaming monkey! xD lmao -cleaned up that mess right quick. We're all proud of you Simone. :) xD Good ol' vitamins. lmao - "One day from retirement!" I LOVE those dogs so friggin much! <3 I'll always be a dog person. :D Whole lot of sad feelers for sure. xD Love that banter. lol, yeah - this movie does NOT hold your hand. Cuba Gooding Jr has been in MANY movies - most are garbage but gems like this do occasionally exist. I don't know the rate of death/decay with ebola. This movie is why I'm a loner that's alone nearly every day. This movie's tragic and VERY possible. COVID woke people to this reality but people are STILL careless. It's maddening. Images like that are so important, George! lol, yup - it is Simone. Each time I see Simone's sad face I feel bad! xD hahahaha, wow. I hope that in the end she'll say that she enjoyed the movie. YUP! Airborne illnesses are much more terrifying. This movie is very quick, yeah. "Good acting, Monkey!" lmao, wow, George. Stupid people won stupid prizes. xD lmao, right George! Anybody that fires at a chopper deserves what happens to them. xD Yup - we experienced a light version of this less than five years ago. Growing up, watching this I had no idea how I'd react if it were a reality. Now - GRANTED - nothing THIS LEVEL OF EXTREME ever happened. RIP Spacey :(- also fuck that dude for not being honest. lmao -sad, but very true George. lmao, that closeup of the monkey was hilarious. The way this movie closes is weak, yeah. Everything wraps up too nice and neat. I'm honestly surprised at this movie's length! It didn't feel like a two hour plus movie! This is a quality movie for sure. :) I'm sort of surprised that neither of you ever heard about this one. I watched this as a kid and it was a memorable movie. Not because of the acting or characters but just the story - it was SCARY! Then we all lived through a light version of this - yeah. LUL A Morgan Freeman character that we can hate. You've got to remember George - this movie was long before he became who he is now. He didn't have the image of an actor that everybody loves immediately. All dogs go to Heaven, Simone. RIP doggos. xD This movie back then was TERRIFYING. Imagining something like this was unbelievable but because it was unbelievable it was that much more terrifying to imagine it as a possible reality. xD lmao - Simone I love your idea with the monkey. I don't think that I'd of liked Harrison Ford in this role. Dustin Hoffman played this role so well. I'm very much with George on this. :) Had a good bit of fun watching this with you two! Thanks so much for doing this reaction! :)

Logan Kerlee

Love that you knew that detail! :)

rictus grin

i think you guys would enjoy the movie, The Andromeda Strain (1969) based off the book by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park)

Reed James

That shot of the helicopter flying over the logging truck reminded me of a clip I saw from Ukraine of an attack helicopter flying low over the highway to look like civilian traffic in the war.

Simone there is an early-ish Patrick Dempsey movie i think you would like Some Girls AKA Sisters (1988) co-starring Jennifer Connelly

FilmAsh

I agree he was noticeably weaker than Paulson and Brown (to be honest those two just happened to bring their career bests to this show as noted also by the critics reviews so it wasnt quite a fair fight) but I did feel Cuba was the most effective than I 've seen him in a minute conveying a mental state both inflamed and deflated by the opposing forces of his own guilt and ego particularly in the end of the show where even though he "won" you can feel he actually lost and the realization of that coming from Cuba's performance made me think of the line from Rogue One "theres more than one kind of prison, I suspect you carry yours wherever you go." Also made me think of Michael Keaton's similar performance at the end of "The Founder." Travolta made me laugh but I thought his performance and makeup was kinda terrible tbh compared to the other case including Cuba.

Red Freckle

True, there was no highspeed helicopter chase in this film, definitely not one involving missiles.

blerbaberpaterb

helicopter chase for 15 minutes, missiles, huge explosions, soldiers shooting at cars speeding towards the woods... yep. definitely not an action movie. clearly those only happen in rom coms

John

I would add Rene Russo: Tin cup, Thomas Crown Affair (remake) and Major League Morgan Freeman: Kiss the Girls Donald Sutherland: The Dirty Dozen, The Italian Job Cuba Gooding Jr: The Tuskegee Airmen, Men of Honor

KnittingHaven

I saw this in the theater when it came out. It still hit pretty hard then, but I knew a lot about viruses already. It also was only a few years after some Hantavirus scares the the US that only had a few infections/deaths, but the death rate of those infected was around 30%, I think, pretty scary rate. I had also read Stephen King's The Stand a few times. Interesting that Tom Clancy's book about a weaponized Ebola outbreak in the US came out only a year after this movie. On a lighter note, my favorite baby Dr. McDreamy movie is Can't Buy Me Love. He was a very convincing unpopular nerd back then.

John

I would recommend Contagion and The Andromeda Strain

Brandon

I think the entire movie, including the 3rd act is more plausible today. I'm pretty sure I have less faith in the current US government than I do in the fictional government of this film. 🙃

Jenny MacRunnel

I remember when this came out. I loved it! Crazy movie, and I thought something like this could NEVER HAPPEN, its way too unrealistic. Welp, I was definitely wrong. Sure, COVID wasn't as deadly as this, but it spread so fast and it was a horrific reality, especially in the beginning, and for countries that didn't have the infrastructure to deal with it. I'm thinking mainly of Italy. Its a very sobering movie now, especially that first half, and I agree, George, that is my favorite part too. I don't mind the action, but I don't really like the scene where the 2 helicopters are chasing Daniels and Salt. They could have left that part out IMO.

OddThomas

I think maybe the point they were making with Spacey's character was, no matter how intellectually smart you may be, when the shit hits the fan even the best of us panic. It's survival 101. Like you hear stories about a bomb going off and people running away on instinct and only coming to their senses a mile away from where they started. The body goes on autopilot. We'd like to think we'd be more rational but honestly I doubt most people are in these situations.

OddThomas

Agreed. Outbreak is more Hollywood & satisfying but Contagion was just a bummer imo. Realistic, but a bummer. I'm with Simone, I had zero interest in watching Contagion during Covid.

Paul Peavler

Morgan Freeman also plays a villain with a similar vibe to this in the movie Chain Reaction which came out in 1996. I don’t think it’s generally remembered much, but it also stars Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, and Brian Cox, and I think it has an interesting concept.

michael denny

they absolutely should have destroyed that town, quarantine is just that, anyone tries to leave they should be eliminated. this movie annoys me almost as much as the humans not nuking pandora into oblivion from orbit in avatar. Much better film similar military ethical stuff Crimson Tide please and thanks you guys rock.

Darren Harrison

Want to see Morgan Freeman as a villain. Watch "Chain Reaction" with Keanu Reeves

Leigh P

That's Rosses monkey from Friends.

michael denny

also, Simone people in America don't go to jail for war crimes.....silly

nicholas hadley

I really like runaway jury as Dustin Hoffman film. (Also John cusack, rachel weisz and gene Hackman)

James MacDonald

Contagion is definitely the movie for George, since he wants this sort of thing without the genre shift.

ArathornWindfire

Contagion is so well done, very good film, a big step up from Outbreak.

Stanley Etienne

You guys definitely need to watch The Graduate (1967). The film that made Dustin Hoffman a star, and one of the best films ever made.

Cc Decc

Without dumping on Contagion, which does some things extremely well...the thing is its kind of what you are looking for. Contagion really succeeds as something almost like a documentary. Its smart, detailed, gets the science right, steely eyed. But its not...or rather its almost intentionally not...entertaining. Its emotional beats are fairly one dimensional. And given Soderbergh's history, that had to be intentional (although a significant chunk of his movies felt like that for a while -- Solaris, Haywire,, Michael Clayton etc. all had similar lowkey vibes).

Bertrand Belisle

For a great Donald Sutherland performance, I recommend Ordinary People

p0sthum4n

Please, PLEASE watch Contagion the same way you watched Deep Impact after Armageddon so you can compare and contrast.

Joe Goodfellow

You guya should watch the original deadly disease movie, Andromeda Strain.

gfixler

It's up around 30 now, thanks to the Milwaukee Protocol, which a doctor randomly thought up when presented with a girl with rabies symptoms, which had been 100% fatal until that point. He gave her a mixture of drugs to shut down her brain, to protect it from viral attack, and give her body time to build antibodies. She was brought out of the induced coma after 31 days, survived, and went home on the 76th day. There was a bit of cognitive impact, and she needed therapy for a year, but she's in pretty great shape now. Edit: OMG, she was brought out of the coma after 6 days, not 31 days. She was declared free of the virus after 31 days.

MacGuffinStuff

Saw this in the theater up the street from my house when I was in high school, thought it was great. Watching it now, five weird fucked up years for everyone I know and after my mom died of pneumonia from COVID, the scene where the mom has to leave her family, suffices to say that hit me a little in the memories. But overall this is a true disaster movie and a good one, I rank it up there with Deep Impact. I agree with George it got a bit over the top in the third, but I enjoyed it. For more Dustin Hoffman I have to recommend "Little Big Man", it's one of his earlier ones and super entertaining, also an early one is "Papillon", with Steve McQueen, one of my all time favorite movies, kind of long but allegedly based on a story that the guy said was true, anyway I feel like it's probably a movie Stephen King had in the back of his prodigious literary mind when he wrote Shawshank.

REDR58

Ackshully ….they were “rockets” not “missiles” (despite the fact that both type of ordnance used in such aircraft are solid-fuel, rocket-propelled).

REDR58

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

REDR58

But watch the original “The Thomas Crown Affair” first!

Jason Dreibeblis

Yes that’s a fantastic Dustin Hoffman and just great as a courtroom thriller

Jason Dreibeblis

Yes exactly this! Contagion is good and very informative about how diseases spread, but I found it thoroughly boring and unemotional. Outbreak is definitely more dramatized, but I find it much more entertaining and more fun to revisit as a movie.

REDR58

This movie turned into popcorn nonsense but it was fun, but The Andromeda Strain is a far superior movie (and more plausible).

REDR58

Tootsie is an interesting recommendation, for sure.

REDR58

Malkovich is wonderful in that movie.

Glenner7

I'm sorry, but when I hear that someone's rank and name are Major Salt, I can't help but think: Sgt. Pepper...

Ken

For an amazing Cuba Gooding Jr flick, you should check out Men of Honor. It also has a star studded cast.

REDR58

It seems like the different biosafety levels of danger should be literally on different levels at the start of the movie and not a bunch of adjoining, connected rooms on the same floor? The better-funded World Health Organization was nice… I saw Patrick Dempsey first in Can't Buy Me Love (1987) which might be worth a watch here. In this movie, he’s driving a 1959 Volvo PV 544 Sports Sedan. Kind of unusual, but interesting! I want a monkey! Lieutenant Colonel Briggs with the white hair is played by Dale Dye who is a real Marine and who has acted in a number of action and war movies, including ones you have seen here: "Mission: Impossible," "Starship Troopers" and "Saving Private Ryan." He was also in the "Band of Brothers" miniseries. At least one of the Cadillac M114 armored personnel carriers on the boundary of the town appeared to have an anti-tank missile launcher on top of it! These vehicles are standing in for the much more common FMC Corporation M113 armored personnel carrier that was in service with the US Army at the time of the movie, unlike the Cadillac M114 that was retired in the early 1980s. The fuel air bomb described in movie is a real thing, as is the delivery method shown in the movie, dropping it from an aircraft via parachute, though as far as I know it was not used with either of the two specific type of aircraft shown in the movie. The first aircraft that dropped the bomb early in the movie was a C-47 Skytrain that has no rear cargo ramp, only a side-cargo door arrangement and though it appears to show the bomb being yoinked out of the side of the fuselage via the cargo door, I seriously doubt one could safely drop something of the size or weight of a fuel-air bomb out the side of that type of aircraft. Later on in the movie, we see a C-123K “Provider” and that aircraft does have a rear cargo ramp and I suppose could theoretically drop such a bomb, but in the case of the US military, fuel air bombs as seen in the movie are in reality dropped by C-130 “Hercules” cargo planes (one C-130 was seen on the ground), by the parachute deploying and pulling the bomb out of the back of the aircraft. Such bombs were first used by the US military during the Vietnam War. As with the M114 APC above, the C-123 was no longer in use by the US military at the time of this movie’s setting and its appearance is anachronistic. I’m not used to seeing Donald Sutherland being such a cartoonishly evil ass military type. Usually, he plays more easy-going military types. My biggest problem with this movie is in fact that cartoonishly evil portrayal by Donald Sutherland. But then I think about the real world. Sigh. Without carrying extra fuel tanks, as was definitely not apparent in the movie, the Hughes OH-6 “Cayuse” (or “Loach”) that Daniels and Salt fly all over the place in has nothing like the “800” mile flying range mentioned in the movie, but closer to 380 miles. The large airplane that Simone noted as being weird-looking is a Boeing E-3 Sentry with a large, rotating radar dome (rotodome) on top of the fuselage. It can see aircraft at great distances. It is/was used by the US, UK, France, Chile and NATO. This movie was interesting and definitely worth a watch, but as many others have suggested, do please check out "The Andromeda Strain" (1971). That is a vastly superior film.

Robert Durant

Like others have commented here y’all definitely need to watch The Andromeda Strain from 1971. It’s probably the most realistic portrayal of the science of a viral outbreak and what they do to contain it. The suspense of the movie lies in the science of the plot.

MacGuffinStuff

Also, for more contagious stuff, we all love it, but also more Donald Sutherland, and a little finding Nimoy, 1978 classic remake of the 1950s, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers".

FranciscoGios

I watched this movie before 2020 and I did saw it differently, the government doing all the possible to “rescue” its citizens of a virus outbreak. But today knowing how the government behaves I can see this scenario happening. Also I was somewhat prepared when COVID occur because here in California in my early school years which were early 90s we had the AIDS pandemic, so even though not airborne or deadlier AIDS was always in your mind.

Brandon

Based on the outro, I'm guessing they'll watch The Graduate in the near future. 🤞

REDR58

Source of a great meme.

Seth's Coffee Cup Ambush

Absolutely watch Contagion. It's a hell of a thing to watch after 2020. Steven Soderbergh got a lot right and it's more affecting now than it was last time I watched in the before times, and I loved it then. It's also simply an excellent thriller in its own right.

Seth's Coffee Cup Ambush

I would add that watching it soon after Outbreak is really satisfying from a realism standpoint. Not that Outbreak isn't a good thriller even if it loses the plot in the third act.

Relic

Some Dustin Hoffman non-hero roles Midnight Cowboy (1969), Marathon Man (1976)

This movie came out when I was 18. I watched it, and really enjoyed it. It's my kind of thing. It did make me think "What would this kind of thing be like?" back then. When COVID hit, after things died down a bit, and we were all locked down, I did think of this film, and a few others like it, and really wanted to watch them, and I remember interest in outbreak-like movies shot up during that time. I tend to always reset to a baseline, though—I'm like immune to trauma—so while I did spend a year or two looking sideways at all manner of germ spreading behavior, like people not covering their mouths, or laughing really hard, or talking too close, spreading droplets, that's all faded away for me, and this rewatch didn't hit me like it may have back in 2020, or 2021.

I could never look at Mary Tyler Moore the same way again after Ordinary People. Also a great performance from a young Timothy Hutton

George's problem with tonal shifts and his need for strict adherence to total realism remains unmatched.

There’s a few evil Morgan Freeman options out there. My recommendation would be Nurse Betty. Dustin Hoffman is a great actor. I see this one as him showing he can do the Tom Cruise thing as well as anyone. The reason you haven’t seen many Cuba Gooding Jr films is similar to why you haven’t seen many Kevin Spacey films made in the last decade. Cuba was big in the P Diddy network.

Awesome bingers, I watched this in the cinema when it first came out - I distinctly remember trying to hold my breath for the last half of the movie. One person kept coughing which caused laughing initially but then people started getting nervous. I also said 'Ebola' when I watched it - it was a thing back then. The military keeping nasty bugs for 'scientific' purposes was also a thing with discussions on whether the polio virus and others made extinct due to global vaccinations should still be kept in labs or destroyed. C'mon George, who doesn't love an unnecessary helicopter chase scene. Cheers

Right there with ya

Polecat21

totally agree with George on this. absolutely loved the first 2 thirds and it lost me in the 3rd act with the genre shif

In our Immunology and Virology lectures, it was always Smallpox that came up for discussion. It is the first and only virus to be completely eradicated from the human population, and so now only effectively exists in labs. So do we destroy them or not?

Next to your onscreen banter, your thumbnails are a major part of why I subscribe to your channel (the no-copy needed version thing is a big selling point too!) So please don't ever change them to anything more generic.

To this day, the most frustrating scene in this entire film is in the pathology lab towards the beginning of the film. Having worked in labs my entire adult life, I still cannot fathom how a centrifuge can have a lid that can be opened whilst its still at full speed.....especially in a lab that handles potentially infectious materials. The inattentiveness of the lab tech is also a massive frustration.....given how paranoid I always am about centrifuge malfunctions.

I think the Andromeda Strain is a great movie, and I certainly hope they watch it. I would say that it is not the most realistic portrayal of the science of a viral outbreak. I think Contagion is more accurate but also released 40 years later so has that inherent advantage.

CrunklJack don’t poop.

Contagion much better. When this movie came out I didn’t like it for the very reasons George said.

As someone who lives in the Bay Area. The whole quarantine of San Francisco makes no sense. They said the guy who took the monkey worked in San Jose yet they quarantine just the city of San Francisco and not San Jose which is two counties away. Oakland is the bigger port city anyway so they probably should’ve quarantined at least three whole counties and not just SF.

Outbreak was a decently popular movie when it came out, and I think it was pretty common knowledge that Dustin Hoffman was the lead. And he was good in it. But it wouldn't make most people's lists of memorable "Dustin Hoffman" movies. His character (who's name I have literally forgotten already, despite having JUST watched it again) is a likable hero, but not particularly unique. It's not a meaty role with much character growth or subtlety, and he's had enough of those that a list can be made without including all the movies where he merely did a fine job.

This movie was a lot of fun to rewatch with y'all -- I forgot how crazy the final third of the movie is! I agree with George that it turns into a Roland Emmerich movie then. I really hope that (beyond Rain Man) you guys schedule some Dustin Hoffman classics -- he's an asshole in real life, unfortunately (it's becoming increasingly clear that this is common with famous actors), but he's incredibly talented. Suggestions for future reactions that were really groundbreaking: The Graduate (and Anne Bancroft is AMAZING) All the President's Man Tootsie Kramer vs. Kramer (he was horrible to Meryl Streep during filming but it's a great movie and she's fantastic) Midnight Cowboy Papillon (I think you guys watched Stranger Than Fiction, right? He's lovely in that, as is Emma Thompson.)

Contagion (2011) is a more scientifically accurate film. You guys should watch that next.

1+ All the President’s Men

Oh, this is by far my favorite Hoffman movie ever. I love this movie from its cool medical thriller beginning to its kinda schlocky rush actiony ending.

Ricardo Alanis

I think George will definitely like Contagion more for this genre.

I like how both of you did a face when you thought about having an itch.

I very highly recommend And the Band Played on (1993). It’s more of a scientific investigation/puzzle-solving film. No helicopter chases. But it takes your breath away. Reality is worse than anything Hollywood could come up with.

Juley

I’m so here for it!

Please don't EVER change your thumbnails. They're already great and crack me up!

They didn't quarantine San Francisco. It was a much smaller town named Cedar Creek.

The last time I saw this movie was several years before Covid. It definitely feels different after having lived through the pandemic.

FrancescoTakesItEasy

I'm a little late - was saving this reaction for the arrival of the new 4K disc - but still wanted to post this. As someone who has seen Outbreak countless times since the late 90s, it personally doesn't hit much different to me now. If anything, COVID has taught me that a swift and efficent reaction by the authorities as depicted in the movie is pure fiction.

Flerb

I saw this first in 9th grade biology class shortly after it came out on video. It seemed just like another disaster movie at the time, virus, aliens, earthquakes, whatever. But I watched it again at the onset of Covid, when we all still called it coronavirus, at it REALLY hit different and was kinda scary. Watching it now it feels silly, especially the competency of everyone in athority.

I know that I am late to the Party, and I'm probably being redundant as I pose this idea. YES! You do need to see "The Graduate"! And when you do see "The Graduate", do a little mental exercise: Imagine that you are part of the Cinema going public when it was live in the theaters in 1967, and Dustin Hoffman is just this unknown actor that everyone says you've gotta see. Also, consider the cultural and generational landscape of that time and that you two are probably closer to Dustin Hoffman's character in age is than his parents. As part of considering the cultural landscape, it might be good to learn about the career of the director before directing "The Graduate" (his second directing credit after "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf" – put that on your list too). A good documentary to use for this step is HBO's fun documentary, "Becoming Mike Nichols" – consider temporarily stopping at, or skipping the part about directing "The Graduate". Anyways, "The Graduate" is more than just another movie, it was a result of, and also affected the "Zeit-Geist" of it's time. And coincidentally, it was the moment that Dustin Hoffman's acting career did the same... I was an unsophisticated kid at the actual time, but I was aware that our Zeit-Geist had changed even though I was too young to know what that meant.

As usual, I skip the outro to avoid George.
