Are you allowed to be Canadian and not know who Dave Foley is?

Michael Bauer

So stoked to watch this later 🥰

TomGas2025

And of course today I forgot my headphones at home...🤬

Sam

Just out of curiosity where do you watch these that that's a problem? :D

David Szoke

Main thing I remember from this is when he meets a certain woma near the beginning

Matt O'Keefe

That you guys are unfamiliar with Kids In The Hall should mean your Canadian citizenship should be revoked. And I am an American.

JayF

Kids in the Hall are the Canadian Pythons. You need to watch it. React to it? I mean yeah if you want to I'm sure we'd all enjoy it but you just need to familiarize yourselves with it because you're Canadians. Also, Dave Foley was in the very funny TV show "NewsRadio" which also starred Maura Tierney (Liar Liar), Stephen Root (Milton in Office Space), Phil Hartman (SNL) RIP, Andy Dick, and Joe Rogan.

TomGas2025

Well...in my lunchbreaks at work. At the little pauses that we are allowed to take here and there...i am living in a different timezone you know.

Christina Bee

Dave Foley was the lead in A Bugs Life.

Logan Kerlee

This here is going to be a FUN watch! I'm looking forward to enjoying this later today. :)

jmundt33a

And yet…Calvin would feel vindicated today.

Ea-nāṣir, the worst copper merchant in history!

AHA! I got you George! I give you the very Swedish, and very popular Sandwich-cake (yes, it is a thing. Google it. "Smörgåstårta" in Swedish). Tomatoes is not an unusual ingredient.

Prince Mora

Omg!!! Thank you guys for reacting to this 😭😭😭 I love love love this movie!! If Fallout didn't involve vault-tec

Cinebinge

it is a cake ill grant you! but according to Wiki: Smörgåstårta, or sandwich cake, is a savoury main dish, not a dessert. so not used as a fruit in a dessert! i should also say im well aware tomato jams and sorbets and what not exists. but my point is in most common usage as an ingredient. otherwise, everything can be categorized as anything. theres desserts with with meat in it and we also get to call meat a dessert ingredient just cause one niche usage exists.

By Grapthar's Hammer, what a member!

Soon as you asked the question, carrot was the first one that popped into my head too. And funnily enough I instantly changed it to broccoli in my head as well because that seems more like a vegetable than carrot. But immediately after that I went to potato cos I thought of roast potatoes which are my favourite vegetable. And as for where I am and grew up I'm Australian.

Cartoons ReAct

When this movie was filmed...Polaroid was really big so it was worth a lot, just in time to not lose all the value

Simon

So George, because you're quite impressed with Brendan Fraser in this, just wanted to be 'the guy' who has to point out: his last name is Fraser (fray-zer), not Frasier (fray-sher, like the TV show). But yeah, he's fucking amazing, hope you guys watch his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale someday.

iamweasel

Hot Dr. Pepper was a thing in the 60s/70s

Paul T Hewes

Canadians not knowing KITH is like Canadians not knowing The Tragically Hip.

Cartoons ReAct

Does IMDB hides information based on location? I do see the trivia on my side...about 20 entries

Mike W

I think it says a lot about my diet that the first vegetable that springs to mind is a potato. The one veg that doesn't count towards your 5 a day fruit and veg 😄

Tmatts

Blew my mind when I learned about his name pronunciation. How did we all have it so wrong for so long?

Mike W

Not quite dr pepper but hot vimto is a winter drink. Think this might be a very regional north England thing though

Simon

I think it’s literally because of the popularity of the show Frasier in the 90s (just before Brendan Fraser’s career took off). There’s even a joke in that show about someone mispronouncing Frasier’s name like Brendan’s last name (“How can he not hear the difference between ‘Frazer’ and ‘Frasier’). I guess many people just assumed the Frasier pronunciation from that era onwards lol.

Stephanie Bedworth

I was such a huge Kids in the Hall fan. I think it used to air on Comedy Central down here in the states and I would catch episodes from time to time. I finally just bought the whole series on dvd. They also did a movie called Brain Candy, which is also pretty hilarious if you were into their brand of humour.

DesolationEntertained

I was going to say, hot Dr. Pepper is probably the most normal thing about the dad :)

Senec

Regarding the opening conversation question. I'm a little ashamed to admit this, but when I first thought vegetable, tomato popped into my head. Thats a fruit, doesnt count. So second one that popped into my head was corn, followed by potato. Tomato is savory though, and the flavor profile begs for it to be used like a vegetable. Like if you made a fruit salad with watermelon, grapes, cantaloupe, and tomato, you can fuck right off.

AnthemUnknown

Broccoli is the first vegetable that comes to my mind. But I am the weird kid that has loved broccoli since childhood sans cheese. Though to be clear, if you put cheese on it, I ain't gonna turn it down.

Benjamin Herrera

Celery popped up in my head immediately but I dont even eat celery 🤔 why is that the vegetable that came to mind.. Lettuce to me is the most vegetable, the ultimate vegetable

heidismiles

So excited for this one!!!

Pete Luhtaniemi

More Brendan please. Watch Bedazzled (2000), Brendan Fraser and Elizabeth Hurley.

By Grapthar's Hammer, what a member!

This movie, Encino Man, The Mummy, George Of The Jungle. The casting agents for these films absolutely nailed it in picking Brendan Fraser. He is so perfectly suited to all these roles.

Garrett Jay Christian

To George's point, there is no standard biological definition of vegetable, only culinary/cultural, so while a tomato is technically a fruit--the fruiting part of the plant that perpetuates the seeds--it's not wrong to also call it a vegetable. Along those lines, avocadoes, squashes & gourds, peppers, and arguably mushrooms (as the 'fruiting body' of the underground fungus disseminating spores) are biologically fruits. Also, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, mustard, etc., are all domestically cultivated 'breeds' of the same species (I suspect that is to what Simone was alluding); honestly, the wild ancestors of most domesticated crops wouldn't necessarily even be recognizable as edible to our modern sensibilities.

Theo Bracco

One of the best comedies I've ever seen is "Brain Candy" by Kids in the Hall, which is a Canadian production by a Canadian comedy troupe, and you should be ashamed of yourselves from not having seen it, and lose your Tim Horton's & poutine privileges.

djKENTO

not only is Hot Dr Pepper a real thing, they market it for the holidays with a slice of lemon.

Jonathan Eaton

For more Sissy Spacek check out Coal Miner's Daughter (1980)

Raven Blackrose

Hot cola was advertised in ye olden days, and is really nice for a cold with some lemon and honey.

Paul Peavler

When I hear vegetable the first thing I think of is tomato. Because I know it’s a fruit but I still don’t believe it. My personal default vegetable is carrot in my mind, potato by taste. But I think the most vegetable vegetable is celery. It’s green, supposedly a “superfood” but dubious, and it somehow tastes both bad and like nothing at all.

Sonya Byrd

LOL. The dance scene was was authentic to the 1940s Swing style. I mimic the finger wagging move (and Adam's expression of delight) whenever I dance just because it is delightfully cringe and hilarious.

Tangerra

Always liked this movie. Made me feel less bad about being the autistic kid raised in the woods.

Matt O'Keefe

Too bad Encino Man is no good. Brendan Fasier and Sean Astin as co-stars.

Dan

There's no scientific/botanical definition of a "vegetable" so I don't think it's a particularly rational argument to say that the fact that tomatoes are scientifically/botanically fruits prevents them from being vegetables.

Matt O'Keefe

Can't wait for this weekend. A fun Arny movie and they get maybe prime Burt Reynolds.

Mike Kay

I really enjoyed this one! What a pleasant surprise of a good film. Fantastic cast as well.

Lucas

I legit thought broccoli first but since I hate those I switched to carrots! Oh and great movie :)

REDR58

Brendan Fraser, before his recent career resurgence with "The Whale" and other work, was a bit of a rising star in 1992 with the release of the comedy "Encino Man" (with Pauley Shore) and the drama "School Ties" (also starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Chris O'Donnell). He then went on to do a movie called "With Honors" in 1994 (also starring Joe Pesci) and then The Mummy films. In particular, "School Ties" is the best of that early bunch and should be watched here.

OddThomas

You have to watch Batman Forever before Batman & Robin. It's awesome.

REDR58

Simone, you said you hadn't seen Alicia Silverstone in anything other than "Clueless" well, you may not be aware but she was in 3 Aerosmith videos back in the 1990s before "Clueless" and they were quite popular "Cryin'" (1993): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfNmyxV2Ncw "Amazing" (1993): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSmOvYzSeaQ "Crazy" (1994): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMNgbISmF4I Her first big movie was "The Crush" (1993) with Cary Elwes. I've never seen it but it's not particularly well-regarded.

Torgosaves

Dave Foley is great. The Kids in the Hall made a bonkers movie called Brain Candy that is well worth watching. Also, Foley was in Sky High, which is a fun kids movie about a super-hero high school. It's actually way better than it has any right to be.

Boba Fettuccine

Carrot was the first vegetable that popped into my head. The second was the turnips you throw at enemies in Super Mario Bros. 2.

Jonathan Eaton

I think Simone would make it fun to watch.

nj

and crimes of the heart (1986)

Simone's Coconut Squire

I’m in the Broccoli camp. No matter what you do with it, it always looks like broccoli.

Kinokind

I second both! One had poor distribution and the other was aimed at a tween crowd, bit has Curt Russell and others of repute in it. Both are very fun. Dave Foley makes everything better just by being in it.

Simone's Coconut Squire

The Ketchup thing might be a joke. In the 80s the Regan administration revised school lunch standards and this revision literally counted ketchup as a serving of vegetables and it became a running gag in the US for a while.

Simone's Coconut Squire

REALLY disturbing to find out what happened to his career. Glad he’s been able to make a comeback.

Mike W

Yeah, this was the first time I ever saw her.

Kinokind

OK, I'll trivialize you! This film was directed by Hugh Wilson, who also wrote and directed "Police Academy" and created the TV series, "WKRP in Cincinnati". Yes, sadly, hot Dr. Pepper WAS a thing once upon a time. I don't know how popular it was, but it was an attempt by the manufacturer to increase sales. I have seen period magazine ads for it. I know he's done serious stuff, but this is my favorite Brendan Fraser movie. And it's such a treat to see Spacek and Walken doing comedy! They both had a knack for it. Walken does make one small error, though. When he's first telling the duck story at the party, he says "lip gloss." Lip gloss didn't exist in 1962. Later, when Adam tells the joke, he does it correctly and says "lip balm," which did exist in the 60's. So we have to assume that Walken messed it up and either no one noticed, or it was the best take and they decided to keep it anyway. Dave Foley was from "The Kids in the Hall," a ground breaking Canadian ensemble sketch comedy show that was on for five seasons (1988-93), several specials, and a movie. It was kind of Canada's Monty Python of the 90's. You would recognize other members. Like Python, the all-male members played both male and female parts. Their movie, "Brain Candy" (1996) is well worth a watch. Although perhaps not ideal for your format, everyone (especially Canadians) should watch their sketch series. It is amazing. I saw them perform on stage twice, and they were obviously gifted improvisers. A non-confrontational but obviously drunk audience member seated on the aisle kept yelling out punch lines. When one of the "kids", as part of a bit, ran up the aisle and back, he took a moment to stop, grabbed the drunk's face with both hands, and kissed him on the mouth. Then continued back to the stage. There was not another sound from the drunk. It was the best way to treat an unruly audience member I have ever seen. Genius.

A Möbius strip cannot play the accordion

Technically is that many of the vegetables we eat are mustard. And it’s not that they are at different stages, it’s that they’ve been cultivated over thousands of years to produce different varieties, Brussel sprouts and broccoli are just variations of that

akaTheBAY-AY-RON

You know... all everyone wants to linger on are the bat nipples... but (pun intended) nobody ever seems to talk about the bat suit butt cheeks. I still can't decide if they awoke something in me as a kid or not...

Cc Decc

I had forgotten how very long the setup of this movie was compared to his time in the "present", and had a weird observation: the 30+ years he's supposed to have been under the ground are incredibly transformative culturally to create his fish out of water story. But that really says something about us as a species. If you set this same story in 30 A.D., and he comes up above ground in 65 A.D.....there would be barely be any change. He'd fit right in for the most part. We are moving and changing so fast in the modern world that the space of a single person's childhood is enough to be disorienting if they were somehow taken out of circulation until they grew up. Might just be the particular era too. Someone buried in the 1990s and waking up now might feel less anachronistic. On the other hand, someone buried in the 1880s with horses and waking up during WWI to a world with cars, and planes, and early refrigerators and with radio right around the corner might be more lost than Brendan.

JBK405

Such a charming, pleasant, fun movie. We had it on VHS when I was younger and I never got bored of it. Regarding "hot Dr. Pepper", that did used to be a common way of serving it in the '60s. So though the modern audience (or the '90s audience) would have found it weird, it's actually an error for the investigators to be confused back in '62 when talking about how weird Webber Sr. was. Of course, I never liked Dr. Pepper at any temperature, so to me they're all weirdos. That was a Humphrey Bogart impersonator at the 1940s club. Robert Sacchi, who was a character actor who actually made a career out of being a Bogart lookalike. His biggest role was "The Man with Bogart's Face", where he played a guy who had plastic surgery to look more like Humphrey Bogart. This was one of his last roles before his retirement, although he only passed a few years ago.

Hey guys, how's it going? I love your work and thought processes George but sorry, I am going to break your heart on this tomato is a fruit thing. Before I start, I would just like to call out how underrated Simone's intelligence is, quite a few times she makes the logical leaps and predicts events with accuracy in shows etc, show's a good general knowledge, and critical reasoning skills, massive respect.

Paul Hess

I came for the vegetables; I stayed for the movie!

Dustin

BRAIN CANDY! The KIds in the Hall movie! Please add to the list. And as Canadians you should be ashamed of yourselves. lol j/k

s0rd3z

First veg that comes to mind is Po-ta-to's , closely followed by broccoli. I grew up on the Canadian border in the states where the principle crop is taters and the rotational crop is broccoli..if you have ever been near miles of broccoli growing it don't smell all that great just FYI lol Also due to that locale we had only three TV channels growing up. Our local US affiliate station (CBS, ABC etc ) a Canadian affiliate (CBC, CTV, CHSJ ) and PBS if I could get the rabbit ears just right. Due to that I grew up with SCTV, Kids In the Hall, Hockey Night, Beach Combers, Danger Bay. Sundays was Disney hour, fraggle rock and storyteller etc. I miss those days so much.

Ashkaun

Im so glad you watched this. I knew George would love a good ‘fish out of water’ story

djKENTO

actually yeah... a little rum, a couple cinnamon sticks, it's probably got a sugary sweet mulled wine thing.

Odysseus

Before i Start let me say I am a chef of 30 years. So, the question of tomato is a fruit, if it comes down to how you cook and prepare it in common use, I would like to draw attention to plantains, they are larger, firmer and starchier, making them unsuitable for raw consumption, they are cooked in various ways and used in savory(green) and sweet dishes(yellow or black), and can even be ground into a flour for bread, but definitely used more as a vegetable for cooking, but still commonly known as a fruit. Tomatoes can be used in desserts, such as tomato and basil sorbet (sorry not ice cream hehe), tomato jam tartlets, tomato and raspberry compote etc etc. Which brings me to my next point, compotes are usually made from fruits not vegetables as jams are too (tomato jam), and just because you cook some fruit in a savory dish it is still a fruit and how some fruits are used (apple sauce, blueberry jus, pineapple fried rice etc).If it comes down to, would we put it in a dessert or fruit salad i would like to ask what about olives or avocado's two definite fruits that are used as vegetables in cooking, and you would never see them in a fruit salad. I would absolutely eat a whole tomato as a fruit, juicy and refreshing, and have done so many times hehe, and If you ever come over to Australia i will make you a tomato cake that you will love. On the no such thing as a "fish", i agree with that, as a general term fish is used for seafood, like meat is used for beef, pork etc but there is no animal called "meat". it cannot come down to how we cook food to identify it as all food can be cooked in all ways, I believe it is only our preconceived notions that limit food items uses in dishes (just look at chilli chocolate, another fruit used in chocolate) and often those barriers are being broken. Regardless of people's biases or preconceived notions towards food, unfortunately words have meanings, and it is through the understanding of these words and their meaning that we can organise and categorize our chaotic world, a fruit is not a culinary term for identification, but a socially accepted, closeted term used loosely for preparation, that does not change what it truly is. It is time that fruits come out of the closet, stop hiding behind the beard of the straight vegetable, and embrace their fruitiness, beans, tomatoes, avocadoes and peas come together and break the societal norms of the fruit salad.#binarytomato

WryOnion

Airheads (1994) Fraser, Buscemi, and Sandler.

Helen Mucus

I believe tomatoes are fruit because of how they grow and reproduce, like they have seeds or something. Not to do with how we consume them.

Stephanie Bedworth

Alicia was in a movie from 2011, called Butter. It’s pretty darn good. It also stars Jennifer Garner, Olivia Wilde, and Hugh Jackman.

Logan Nelson

Vegetable is a culinary term, fruit is a scientific term... So depends on the context of the conversation more than anything else...

Logan Nelson

News Radio is one my favorite classic sitcoms... Even ole Rogan is funny in it...

blerbaberpaterb

yeah but what hes saying is that using that as a way to categorize is meaningless for most people because most peoples interactions with tomatoes is as food to eat. rather than botanists. its used mostly as a vegetable, so people call it a vegetable. correcting others by saying "but acktually its a fruit" is just pedantic and irritating.

blerbaberpaterb

yeah i think thats why he said most people arent botanists. most peoples interaction with tomatoes is as a food, in culinary uses. so its a vegetable to most people.

Logan Nelson

Carrots are taproots, potatoes are tubers, and broccoli are flowers... To be technical lol...

Jay Johnson

I liked Encino Man. It isn't exactly an intellectual masterpiece, but dumb comedies can be fun too

Jay Johnson

hot dr pepper / cola doesn't sound appealing to me (though I've never tried it) but if coffee and tea can be drank hot or iced, I don't see why cola/pepper can't have similar variations. (though I've personally never gotten into coffee or tea either)

Ken

The first vegetable that comes to mind is Terry Schiavo..... and then broccoli, cause I was born on the west coast.

Jay Johnson

is he a descendant of the same Scottish clan as Jamie from Outlander? (I know, fictional character. but still)

Matt O'Keefe

I can see that. It's been a long time since I last saw it some time in the 90's

Jay Johnson

seeing Simone get excited over just seeing Nathan Fillion's name in the credits just made me happy

ThetaSigmaTheOriginal

Its interesting that almost as much time has past since this movie came out, as the time between Adam's parents went down into the bunker, and Adam going up top. I also remember watching this when it came out

Jacob King

Best recipe guy on TikTok. My understanding it’s a tax thing. Vegetables are taxed less because they’re healthy? But vegetable is a culinary term and fruit is a biological term so they’ll never perfectly balance.

James W.

I don't expect her to believe but knowing the state of the healthcare system Eve trying to like 5150 Adam is a deal breaker. I would never forgive anyone who tried to involuntarily commit me.

Cally

All "fruits" are vegetables in the sense of "food from a plant". Except for bananas. They're fish.

Brandon

The whole "tomatoes are a fruit" thing reminds me of an old episode of '3rd Rock from the Sun' with Laurie Metcalf as a guest star. "Did you know that the peanut is not actually a nut, it's a legume?" but she says it like "leguuuuuuume" and John Lithgow's character, Dick, is captivated by her intelligence. The second time she brings it up, he realizes how much he can't stand her and completely snaps. First time seeing this movie. I remember having the chance to see it in theaters with some friends in high school, but opted to stay home and play video games. I remember that they ended up not liking the movie. I ended up really enjoying it now that I've finally seen it, though. At the time, one of my favorite comedies was 'Half Baked' so who knows what I would have thought of this movie when I was 15. 😆 For more Brendan Fraser, I highly recommend 'Airheads' where he plays a completely different character. Him, Steve Buscemi and Adam Sandler star as three guys in a band that desperately try to convince a radio station to play their demo tape on the air. It's an aggressively early-mid 90's comedy about LA rock culture. It's something I love to re-watch every couple years.

Angzarr

Now that's a depressing thought...

Angzarr

Between KITH and NewsRadio, I've been a Dave Foley fan for a long time.

Angzarr

Who else noticed the caption was wrong at one point about what song was playing?

Angzarr

30 Helens agree.

Angzarr

I knew they'd love this one! It was even better than I remembered. I hadn't realized before that this was written, directed, and produced by Hugh Wilson of "WKRP in Cincinnati" fame, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised! One of the great sitcoms of all time. And, of course the other great sitcom about radio stations is NewsRadio, starring... Dave Foley! Sissy Spacek is particularly good, I think. And it's saying something to be a standout in this cast. If tomatoes are fruit, then is ketchup a fruit spread?

Jay Johnson

ah yes, the "Crazy" video with Alicia and Liv Tyler has been etched in my memory since my formative years.....

FranciscoGios

Before I answer the 'what vegetable comes to mind when you hear the word vegetable' I'm a cucumber guy and of course I'm going to add some Lemon and chillie souce to my cucumbers. Broccoli & carrots do come to mind. I wish I had a movie trivia for this movie, but all I can say is that historically Pasadena was almost all white half Hispanic and a very agriculture town; back in the day it was a wholesome, clean white neighborhood and even though is situated close to the city of Los Angeles, the residents didn't want to be part of LA; so you can have an idea what Adam's mom was close to referring to.

UnlicensedOkie

This was the first time I ever saw this movie. Holy shit this was a pretty damn good movie. As for the vegetable discussion. My first thought was carrot. And no joke my brain also was like “nah. I should choose a green vegetable. After that I honestly couldn’t think of one on the spot.

nate c

His mom said to find a girl from Pasadena. "Pasadena girls are just a little nicer, in my opinion." It's playing on stereotypes of different areas of LA at that time. George Bush lived in Compton, believe it or not.

REDR58

Too soon! But yeah, that was a sad situation.

REDR58

Co-starring Elizabeth Hurley!

REDR58

I never watched "Encino Man" back in the day because even though I was an idiot teenager then, even I couldn't stand Pauly Shore. His schtick got old after about 3 minutes.

REDR58

I sincerely don't understand how anyone thinks that style of dance is cringe or uncomfortable or awkward. I think it looks like great fun.

REDR58

I assume you mean "nailed it"!

REDR58

I fear not... SCTV in general or Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis (who they are familiar with) and specifically Bob and Doug McKenzie/Strange Brew???

REDR58

I don’t think of Brussels Sprouts because I don’t like Brussels sprouts and they are unworthy of thought. Broccoli is my default vegetable that first comes to mind. Stinks when you cook it in a pan but tastes great! The US Navy Jet in the beginning appears to be the North American FJ-2 or FJ-3 Fury, the naval version of the US Air Force’s North American F-86 Sabre (also flown by the Canadian Air Force as the license-built Canadair Sabre), but it’s so dark in the scene it's hard to make out details on the model. The production design on the set for the fallout shelter is really wonderful. I kept wondering how in the heck Calvin built all of that as it would definitely take heavy machinery, but I was so pleased how Adam later described the process as involving a series of contractors. I cannot confirm this, but I wonder if this movie’s bunker was inspired by the real-life “Underground House” in Las Vegas? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w4cdn2Heps https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underground_House_Las_Vegas In “Back to the Future,” Marty’s grandparents are watching an episode of “The Honeymooners” with Jackie Gleason, just as Adam’s family does down in the fallout shelter. Sissy Spacek was about 25 years old in “Carrie” playing a teenager and she was around 49/50 in Blast from the Past. She was very funny in this movie! Simone, Humphrey Bogart died in 1957, aged 57. George, that weird exercise machine was supposed to get rid of abdominal fat: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/sarahburton/i-tried-a-vintage-exercise-machine-and-now-i-cant-stop-shaki Also, it appears that the blurred video titles in the porn shop were this way to avoid an R-rating because of nudity on the covers. It’s a little unusual to see that sort of blurring in movies like this, but it does happen I can only think of one other movie I own that has a blurred screen showing a movie within a movie, (“The ‘Burbs”) and that is likewise probably to avoid an R-rating. I remember the advertising for this movie back in the day but thought it looked pretty silly and stupid. I’m so glad I was wrong about it. This movie was really a lot of fun.

Sonya Byrd

Swing is incredibly fun, high octane and a great display of coordination, synchronization, intuition, and athleticism...But I am acquainted with the style. They have zero idea of what a Zoot Suit is, so the move where Adam does the ... Unsure how to describe it... Bird wing flapping steps? That was hilarious (in a 'cool' way) even in context. Out of context... 😅 Cringe.

M

Loved this movie back in the 90s, loved watching it agsin with you. Amazing trip down memory lane... thanks!

Matt O'Keefe

Learned about it from John Green

punterjoe

I think you have to blame Ronald Reagan for the whole "Ketchup (Catsup?) is a vegetable" thing. It was his administration that classified it as a vegetable in order to comply with nutrition standards for schools - without having to actually add REAL vegetables to cafeterias. And yeah. IMO Tomatoes are fruit. Have you ever plucked a ripe one off the vine on a glorious summer day and just bit into it? Maybe with a little sprinkling of sugar? 😋

Justin Leone

I forgot how funny Sissy Spacek was in this movie. Also, is it just me, or does Simone look a lot like her (apart from the age difference)?

ShittyShittyGameGang

My first thoughts when you said vegetable were cucumbers and tomatoes (probably because we grow those in our garden), but when you asked what the most vegetable was I immediately went to broccoli. Also, Idc if they're botanically fruits, they're veggies in every other way.

Jay Johnson

if tomato is a fruit, does that make ketchup a smoothie?

Dauerempoerungskommentarspaltenkrachmacher

Let's talk about vegetables... because obviously, that's what we're all here for. Don't worry, I'm not about to unpack anyone's deeply rooted emotional attachment to root crops. At first, I thought of potatoes and carrots. But after a heroic few seconds of reflection, I've decided on olluco for its looks and kohlrabi for its taste; because apparently I have strong opinions about obscure produce now. What anyone plans to do with this information is truly a mystery, but congratulations: it’s out there, semi-public, and absolutely irreversible. You're welcome. (I'm going to order some pasta now!)

If you want another movie with both Alicia Silverstone and Christopher Walken you should watch "Excess Baggage" (1997), it also stars Benicio del Toro.

Off the top of my head, my vegetable is lettuce, iceberg specifically because I hate it, except on a burger or BLT, Romain I love, I runno? That said I love vegetables, it's just a knee jerk response that goes back to when my mom would force me to eat vegetables. Fuckin love broccoli, the flowery part especially. These bebycarrots, and a bunch of other but they're always buttered lol. Tomatoes are not vegetables but I love them, my pops used to grow them, cherry tomatoes were delicious right off the vine and a quick rinse, Romas off the vine, sliced and salt and pepper on a BLT with toasted sour dough.

Donna Castellano

I would love to see them do a NewsRadio reaction. Tho, sadly, it was never the same after Phil Hartman died.

DwarfsRBest

I'm a little bit ashamed to say that my first-thought-of vegetable was potato. After half a second's thought, it switched to broccoli.

Jonas

Yeah, it was because of privatization of school lunches. It was so corporations could save money and not waste it on real vegetables with real nutrients for our children. Once again, Reagan ruins everything.

Jonas

The biggest crime of this review is that two Canadians haven't watched Kids in the Hall. Watchalong!

John Smith

To be fair it's now a thirty-year-old sketch show.

John Smith

Do you add vinegar to your smoothies?

John Smith

I think it's pretty meaningful if my food has seeds or not. George's argument is nonsense - you don't use a tomato as a vegetable, you use it as a tomato - it can't substitute for broccoli, carrots or asparagus. Also, why would you try to put tomatoes on a cake? You shouldn't put watermelon on a cake, and that's the best fruit in existence. Not all fruit belongs on cake.

John Smith

Ehh, the movie wasn't that good. There are several Kids in the Hall sketches that were great, but not the movie.

John Smith

George, I dare you to use tomatoes "as a vegetable" in cooking - take ANY recipe you normally make (that has a vegetable in it) and just try to substitute tomatoes for that vegetable. It'll fundamentally change that food (assuming it doesn't make it totally inedible). I can't imagine any food where tomatoes would be an acceptable substitute for carrots, lettuce, potatoes, cabbage, asparagus, squash, kale, bok choy, onions, beets, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, zucchini, etc... Tomatoes having seeds isn't the only reason that they're a fruit - it's also because they are juicy and acidic; both aspects that are important when cooking.

Cinebinge

off the top of my head 1. vegetable egg stir fry. main focus is the way the eggs are flash fried in 30 seconds then taken out, and added back in once veg is cooked. veg variety can be egg plant, napa cabbage or tomatoes as the tomatoes arent cooked down to mush and needs to remain mostly intact as wedges. 2. tomato parmesan instead of eggplant parmesan, just need to cut in thick slices, breaded and baked. similar soft texture after cooking. 3. stuff bell peppers can be replaced with stuff tomatoes, just need to hollow it out. slightly juicer and softer, but very similar. 4. ratatouille, swap zucchini with tomato slices thats cut a bit thicker to compensate for loss of liquid. the sauce already contains tomatoes so having slices of it doenst change the flavor. 5. replacing carrots as base for sauce is very common.

"If you set this same story in 30 A.D., and he comes up above ground in 65 A.D.....there would be barely be any change." Are we sure about that? This could be an effect of history getting edited by the generations that follow - in general, the parts of history that get passed on, are the parts that the current generation believes are important to pass on. And, of course, what is considered important, changes from generation to generation. After a dozen or so generations, not much of the original story is left. For example, if Blast From the Past was set in 30 A.D. *in the British Isles* and he comes above ground in 65 A.D., well he'd have to deal with an entirely new government. Having written that, I'm strongly reminded of the story "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving. Blast From the Past seems to owe a fair bit to that story (in a literary sense).

John Smith

NewsRadio was one of the best sitcoms of the 90s. Very underrated.

John Smith

Bell peppers and eggplants are both fruits by the same definition that makes tomatoes a fruit. I guess I messed up adding squash, cucumbers and zucchini to my list, because all of those ought to be fruits as well. I wasn't thinking properly.

John Smith

Honestly, if you read the FDA panel on the back of a bag of salad - it really doesn't list a lot of valuable nutrients in vegetables. They're mostly there to take up space (to help you not over eat) and clear the way for other foods (your intestines need regular cleaning - by fiber rich vegetables).

R. Chang

With Phil Hartman, yes. It never really recovered after his death, in my opinion.

Den Radar Ryan

Top 5 Brendan Fraser movie for me. Still blows my mind how Christopher Walken was only 55 years old and Sissy Spacek was 49 when this movie came out. 👀

Ginger

It's so interesting to see the most and least viewed parts in the player now. I usually try not to skip the intro but 17 minutes is pushing it even for me. :D That's by no means to say don't do your pre-reaction talks, you do you! <3 (I do usually stick around for the post-discussion and trivia though, right up until you start listing the Patrons. ^^)

You guys should really check out The Kids in the Hall... there's a nice documentary about them on Prime. Also, George needs to watch The Last American Virgin... he won't understand until the very end and then he'll be happy.

Angela D. Mitchell

Hot dog! I was so thrilled you guys reacted to this, one of my favorite little gems. It's so clever, funny, thought-provoking (the question of "what if we are post-apocalyptic and we never noticed?" is fabulous), and the actors are all terrific and so much fun. Brendan Fraser is really so good here -- he does so much with his body and expressions here -- then gets out on the dance floor and absolutely crushes it with so much grace and joy of movement. And I agree with George that the romance feels earned -- we really watch Eve fall for him (and Troy, platonically), and it's very sweet. Speaking of which, Dave Foley is a treasure -- you guys have got to do Fargo season 5 some time (it's so damn good, and Dave is very good in a dramatic role). I especially love the slightly comic/tragic tough as his poor mom (the awesome Sissy Spacek) is quietly losing her sh*t through those 35 years in the bunker... gradually just screaming into the void (always politely), having a few more drinks or getting on the vibrating exercising machine (my grandma had one and my sister and I used to get in it and just stand there, shaking! Evidently it was a fad where people thought shaking your tummy would make it smaller). There IS a little trivia on the movie, but maybe it wasn't showing up, George? Here's some fun trivia: * Adam's coat that his mother made for his birthday was made from the same fabric that his parents' bedspread is made of. * Brendan Fraser began filming The Mummy (1999) immediately following his completion on this movie. * After returning home from Club 40's, Troy grabs a book from his office. That book is 'War All the Time' by Charles Bukowski. This collection of poems deals with a man becoming happy as he falls in love and how he reconciles his past and future selves. Hugh Wilson was one of the creators and writers for WKRP in Cincinnati and won an Emmy for writing on the short-lived sitcom "Frank's Place." He made some lovely, quirky little movies and my favorite aspect is that he always pays attention to the characters. This was one of his best, but I also love "Down Periscope," which is a guilty pleasure of mine. And one of my favorite comfort movies of all time is his "Guarding Tess," with Shirley MacLaine and Nicholas Cage. It's just a warm, kind little gem, and absolutely wonderful. I know it's unlikely that y'all will ever react to it, but I definitely think you would both be surprised by it. PS -- OMG, George you made a Dragon Age reference! I'm a huge DA fan and love the way the dwarves who grow up underground fear falling into the sky.

Angela D. Mitchell

Oh, and broccoli was my vegetable pick. (And I never knew that about brussels sprouts, Simone, so I learned something!)

Spectre Mando

Has anyone tried George's challenge of a tomato cake? My head is churning with the idea. Feels almost like a Food Wars challenge 🍅

Sumner Hayes

Yeah, scientifically tomato are both fruit and vegetable. Vegetables are the edible parts of plants, which edible fruits are a subset of. Culinarily, tomato are vegetables but not fruits. This is not unusual: many botanical fruits are not culinary fruits: nuts, cucumbers, beans, wheat, black pepper, corn, oats, cumin, peanuts, rice, etc. Bananas are daiquiris.

Matrim

Culinarily tomatoes are absolutely vegetables. If you want to be persnickety about them botanically you can’t stop there. Jalapeños and bell peppers are also botanically fruits, so are cucumbers, pumpkins, peas, okra, and string beans.
