The video George saw is from the channel "Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny". Brent Spiner and Jpnathon Frakes are the hosts, not guests.

s0rd3z

Remember Me is a great episode, probably my favorite Crusher centric. I also appreciate that they didn't really feel the need to shoe horn a B plot in this one. Legacy with Temu Linda Hamilton is not so high on my list. I do like that it references the past and Tasha, as well as how Data reconciles the events but something holds it back for me. Still a decent episode though.

s0rd3z

They did Fallout between s3 & 4 and it's likely they may pause for another one off between seasons. Wed. is pretty much a day for what they want to watch.

Matrim

Hey, you can’t get mad about Alan Tudyk dying in Serenity. That harpoon was really dirty and they just needed to run it through the Wash. Also, looks like they’re developing a Firefly animated series, so that’s cool.

s0rd3z

It's a good podcast, I recommend it. I have not watched all of them but they have had some great guests. Nathan Fillion & Alan Tudyk also have a podcast to "Once We Were Spacemen". I do recommend it as well.

Polecat21

Remember Me is an odd one for me. seem to be on the same page with George. I absolutely love the story and absolutely hate the solution.

michael denny

that's their podcast George, it's called dropping names, with Brent Spiner and Jonathan franks as the hosts.

Data Cable

Gates did many of her own stunts in "Remember Me," then learned she was pregnant.

Jeffrey Mitchell

I'm going to vote for Simone listening to Project Hail Mary first. I think George is right, it'll be better if they can both be excited about the same things rather than George having to keep quiet.

Polecat21

Kinda funny watching the discussion of Project Hail Mary (agree - audiobook is the way to go). Apparently the discussion took place the day after they watched the Remember Me episode. if it was the same day, I think George would have the answer to "how will they convey working thru a problem in your head".

Lintrinsic

As for what I'd like to see Alan Tudyk as in Star Trek. Avoiding spoilers, I think he would have been better in place of Andy Dick. Let's face it, anyone would be better than him but I think Tudyk would have shone, made a lot more of that role and maybe it would have lasted longer than it did.

Kelley Leary

Patrick Bauchau (he played the Louvre director that was murdered in the movie 2012) was considered for Picard. William Campbell (who played Okona in the earlier episode “The Outrageous Okona” was one of many who auditioned for Riker. Marina Sirtis and Denise Crosby were originally offered the other’s role. Patrick Stewart was (very briefly) considered for Data early in preproduction, but they had audition for Picard. I believe Levar Burton was the first person offered the role of Geordi and Worf was a last-minute character, so I think Micheal Dorn was the first offered the role. Wesley was originally conceived as the 15 year old daughter of Beverly, named Leslie Crusher (Wesley was Gene Roddenberry’s middle name).

Joel

How about Jean Reno as a substitute for Picard? He's French, and I think he has the gravitas to pull it off.

Will Sofer

I love how Geordie seems to be getting increasingly more annoyed by Wesley in general, as time goes on.

John Miller

I know who Simone wants to be.

StonyD

George, the next suitable person to play the TNG crew, but back in the 80's? Picard would be played by Pierce Brosnan or Sean Connery, Riker would be played by Tom Selleck, Geordi would be played by Eddie Murphy, Data would be played by Jeff Goldblum or Jude Law, Troi could be played by Demi Moore, Yar played by Jenette Goldstein, and Worf would be played by Carl Weathers.

StonyD

For background information on how Stewart got cast (and how they made S1 and S2 of TNG) finish the TNG series and watch the documentary "Chaos on the Bridge". It's excellent.

Lintrinsic

I've heard the theory George mentions, but not in association with the Q. With a species that turns up later, it would be a spoiler but if you know, you know.

WryOnion

I think Simone should listen to the Italian audiobook for Project Hail Mary first, then watch it. Seems like she’d get the best of both words that way.

Michael

Gates McFadden was pregnant during filming of Remember Me

Jamie

I guess they cut that stunt out in the edit! :)

Danny Bryant

Not affiliated and or sponsored but, I thought the trekkies/trekkers might like to know about the PODCAST "Dropping Names...and other things with Brent and Jonny" starring Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes. Youtube and Patreon are how I watch them.

Joel

The only thing that I really get from Legacy is the exploration of Data's connection with his "emotions", otherwise it's just... visual appeal :)

Dioskur

"Remember me" is one of my all time favourite Star Trek episodes and for sure one of the best in TNG (most other great ones are in DS9) Btw did you decide yet if you want to watch TNG and DS9 at the same time because they aired at the same time? Or after each other even though the in-show time is off that way?

REDR58

Remember Me Beverly’s friend Dalen Quaice is played by Bill Erwin who in the movie “Somewhere in Time” with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour who played Solitaire in “Live and Let Die.” He was also in “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Home Alone” and “Naked Gun 33+1/3.” Gates McFadden is really good in this episode and goes a wonderful, naturalistic performance. While examining O’Brien, Beverly calls for “Dr. Hill” and then “Dr. Selar.” Selar was the Vulcan doctor played by Suzie Plakson in the 2nd season episode “The Schizoid Man.”

Elvenwitch

Simone, with that cat that ate the canary smirk.

Guts

Imo George should stop reading the titles tbh.

TalynOne

It's great, but that damn bell gets annoying fast.

Kieran Hawk

Not to put a finer point on it, but making a blanket statement that intervention in conflicts always fail or make things worse is very cynical, woefully ignorant, and a little bit insulting. Just saying...

Hamesque

If Simone watches Project Hail Mary blind won't that be the same as just listening to an audiobook!?!?!

2026-09-05 05:00 I like these episodes. I only have one nitpick for each. In 'Remember Me', I think the reveal of what's going on is a bit early. Not enough to spoil the episode, but I'd have liked the viewers see Beverly dive through the disturbance without knowing that she's right. Gates is great here, as always. In 'Legacy', they should never have put Ishara in that horrible blue outfit. What were they thinking? Not everyone has to be in spandex. Her own clothing looked much better. With regards to the intervene/not intervene discussion, I wish I could make a particular point, but you're nowhere near watching that yet.

I had been seeing it on my instagram feed, and its quite interesting show to watch.

Mike W

For project Hail Mary I do think it works better with one not knowing the source material. It gives a good balance as to the quality of a movie. If you have to read the book to enjoy the movie does that make it a good movie? Although it might be fun to see if you imagined it the same.

Paul Peavler

George, just a heads up that the podcast you were talking about was actually Frakes and Spiner’s podcast and Tudyk and Fillion were the guests. As another commenter mentioned, the podcast is called “Dropping Names with Brent and Jonathan” and it just started a couple months ago.

Jomero

Principal Crusher: "Am I so out of touch? No, it is the Universe who is wrong!"

REDR58

You guys seem so stoked to see Project Hail Mary, just go see it in the theaters! A movie like this is surely best experienced on the big screen. I know you tend to skip new movies and wait for digital, but give yourself a treat with this one!

REDR58

The episode titles were there when these shows originally broadcast, so what’s the problem?

REDR58

Yeah, that blue spandex is just terrible looking and I think we all know why she was wearing it.

Thall

The way you said after the first episode "On the engineering side it felt more like someone outside came in and told them to just feel it out." sounded like the Traveler is a AI tool, lol! Love it

Young Blood Priest

I think I know too but I don’t see the harm in saying the name cause there’s no way George would know who she’s talking about.

Robert Durant

Geordi probably still miffed that Wesley wasn’t a fan of Reading Rainbow in his younger years.

Dan

Re PHM and explaining mental processes (and talking about only the trailers so no spoilers) - as in The Martian we can see the main character talking to in-universe camera for (presumably) documentary purposes. I'm strongly in favour of Simone going in blind. But then personally I don't mind reading a novel after watching the movie, because there's generally more in a novel than a movie, so I feel like I'm getting "more" and still experiencing new material. Whereas when I read the novel first (as with PHM) it's more about just seeing how things are represented in the movie, which is less fun. Edit: Also I'd be inclined to prioritise the movie over the book because there is rather more (somewhat) hard sci-fi in book form than live-action.

Guts

Even good, altruistic intentions can end up making things worse. The question of how to "help" them can be equally complex as deciding if to help them at all. The problem is also that as a 3rd party you might lack all the information to make a good choice. Even details can change the outcome in some cases. It's like looking at a broken, complex ecosystem and making the decision to turn one of the billions of knobs to try to fix it. And whatever you do you might still end up creating enemies and/or create unintended dependencies. If your help resulted in the emergence of a new set of possibly unforeseen problems, the recipient might demand further assistance, and refusal could be seen as a betrayal. The phrases "No good deed goes unpunished" and "give them a finger and they'll take the whole hand" exist for a reason. The prime directive is designed to force Starfleet officers to consider the long-term systemic damage over the short-term moral impulse. And if it's deemed wise to intervene then the first approach should always be the least intrusive, like for example mediation, if applicable. On the other hand non-action could be interpreted as moral cowardice or elitism. Either one could be seen as arrogance. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. But to me the real problem is that nobody dares to define it as a goal: "What is helping?". Is the goal to save as many lives as possible or to prevent as much suffering as possible, long-term, short-term, medium-term? Those can be very different things.

David Eubanks

Example would be if the US never helped South Korea they would be one dictatorship

REDR58

Legacy Retired actor Beth Toussaint who plays “Ishara Yar” was in Scream 3 as a voice on a phone. The escape pod prop that we see here will appear again and again in different episodes, usually as various shuttlecraft, reskinned/rebuilt or modified. I felt that this episode was rather middling at best, with the Alliance/Coalition aspect generic and uninteresting. The best parts were Data’s interactions with the regulars and the lessons he learned but I didn’t think much of Ishara Yar as a character. It’s just the typical “surprise relative” that was never mentioned or even hinted at before by another character, an aspect of television writing that had been done to death long before this episode (hey, here is your dead dad's Bob's identical cousin Bill who he never talked about and now he'll be living with us on the farm!) and it’s the sort of writing I find obvious and contrived. The highlight was, frankly, the poker game. All the philosophical discussion you guys had was far more interesting than the story itself. (Edit: typo)

GAB

Linda Hamilton has an identical twin sister, but she's not Beth Toussaint.

Guts

Well I argue that not knowing the title gives a more enjoyable viewing experience. The characters in the show don't know the title of the episode they are in either and I think going in completely blind overall provides a purer reaction, unless you are saying that you get more enjoyment out of it when able to use the title as a way to predict the plot. A poorly chosen title is a form of spoiler. You can see a more extreme form in anime where intros and outros sometimes outright spoil a major plot point.

Plaid Hills

Check out "Dropping Names with Brent and Johnny" . It's an awesome podcast/show

Holy Squire

Love these episodes but I'd love them with worshipful devotion if they were subtitled .

Jomero

Blame Roddenberry for the Tasha/Data hookup. He was a massive coomer for the idea of an android and woman getting physical. I believe he even wrote a short story about it before TNG. I am not surprised it happened in the second episode (if you count the first two-parter as one big one) of season 1. I am sure he was champing at the bit for it.

dasgrove

George, you are not allowed to watch Frakes and Spinner's new podcast. Packed full of spoilers. Simone, enjoy! It is so good!!!

Simone's Coconut Squire

Fun fact, (Extra fun for George) Linda Hamilton has an Identical twin sister. She’s not ac actress but she makes an appearance in the extended cut of T-2 where she played her sister’s reflection in Cameron’s answer to a mirror shot.

Lintrinsic

She's also playing the Sarah Connor playing in the park with little John in the dream sequence.

Lintrinsic

Yeah the fully functional thing was lifted wholesale from the pilot for the Questor Tapes. A show that never got picked up.

Bert

If they actually make the new Firefly, it's going to be an animated series voiced by the original cast and it will certainly be taking place between season 1 and Serenity, so yes Wash. Anything else would be a really poor choice at this stage.

Angzarr

Patrick Bauchau migh be best known as Sydney in The Pretender. He was also Chase's dad on House.

Brandy Sawyer

Every time i re watch this episode i always get sarah conner vibes. I find it so distracting

Angzarr

Oh, that's a great casting idea! I can totally see it. And he probably would have been a whole lot more pleasant to work with... 20 years ago I had an idea for what I think would have been a really fun TV show, which in my head would have starred Tudyk and Bobby Cannavale as PIs in the Florida Keys. Of course, not having anyone to pitch the idea to, my head is the only place it will ever exist!

Angzarr

One of my favorite episodes. At the time, I loved that we not only got a Dr. Crusher-centric episode, but that and that it was good! And, not spoiled by a lame B-plot. Though... I never noticed it before, but what is up with the way Crusher is walking at 7:14-7:53?

Kieran Hawk

Yes, and there are countless more examples of successful external interventions going all the way back to antiquity. For example when Thebes sent an army to reestablish democracy in Megara. Or when Rome sent a fleet to end the Illyrian power struggle restoring peace to the Adriatic coast. In more recent times about two thirds of the 60+ completed UN peacekeeping mission have been successful, and it would be difficult to prove that the failed missions made things any worse.

gfixler

"Remember Me" has always been one of my favorites. Then Simone was like "Yeah, I don't remember this," and I was like "has she actually ever seen this show?" 😆

gfixler

Since it'll be animated, I want them to have the Fruity Oaty Bars commercial characters on a TV as live-action characters.

REDR58

Quite so!

REDR58

I suppose, but perhaps if they didn't spend time analyzing the possible meaning of the title? I dunno. Doesn't really bother me.

REDR58

Hm, interesting. I'd never noticed it either despite probably watching this episode a half dozen times or more ever the years. Perhaps her slightly clumsy gait is because she's trying to lean over and keep pace with the older actor? Dunno.

Will Sofer

Except for the stupid bell gimmick.

Will Sofer

Good show. I think Brent Spiner is a little much sometimes, but he was Data, after all.

Will Sofer

She’s obviously someone of nine.

Will Sofer

I belief they’re the “Gallifrey Pals” now, not “Gals”. I like them both, but Kat is extremely confusing when it comes to TNG, from week to week. She hates to love, then loves to hate.

gfixler

We have Linda Hamilton at home.

Robert Cooper

Space anomaly teaches life lesson. Peak Trek.

Mike FromOz

Simone of Nine, if you will.

Plaid Hills

Yeah, there are a few things that I’m sure most of us aren’t a fan of. But I appreciate how they genuinely seem interested in the stories that they and their guests tell. There are a lot of podcasts where it feels like just a daily grind of interviews to make money.

Crow T. German Robot

"You're grounded Wesley, for two years young man, for making me disappear like that."

Mike FromOz

Beth Toussaint is so gorgeous, holy smokes 😍

Alan Pownall

The Federation doesn't want to be deciding how many people to put into re-education camps, the acceptable level of civilian death or indeed combatant death, how oppressive to be in the inevitable counter insurgency etc etc Even having accidentally interfered means they are responsible when the coalition starts executing former alliance members to send a message and things of that nature. We also need to remember that Federation officials have tried to fix worlds before and we ended up with stuff like the Nazi planet. Far easier to not interfere and avoid unnecessary moral complications.

Jon

"The Federation doesn't want to come in and merc a bunch of people."...cue Section 31 😆

Polecat21

off topic - just saw PHM and really liked it - Having listened to the audiobook when it 1st came out I think I can say it tracks really well but I also have to admit my relationship with books is similar to Simone's with Star Trek episodes.....

Phosphorus

(Let me pre-epmt by pointing out that this is in reference to the show:) Have you decided how far down the "tattoos" go, Simone?

Raven Dark

George, I watched this reaction when it was first posted, but I just had to come back and say this now... PROJECT HAIL MARY. Oh. Oh, my, GOD. I'm reading that book right now, and wow. Just wow. That book is so good, it almost defies description. And yes, I am listening to the audiobook, and I just have to say, thank you so much for making me aware of it. Simone, George isn't kidding, the audiobook is a better experience, and it's because there are aspects of the book that just can't be as well conveyed with words as well as it can with sound. It's also because the narrator does such a good job with the reading that it adds to the experience. That said, with regards to whether Simone should read/listen to it first or go into watching the movie completely blind, I'm torn. On one hand, I'd rather Simone go in blind because if you've both read/listened to the book, then watching the reaction will feel too much like a rewatch. It'll diminish the surprises at certain points somewhat. On the other hand, I understand what you're saying, George, about how they won't be able to convey certain aspects of the story onscreen. I can imagine how certain aspects will be hard to translate well in a visual form. I mean, in the end it doesn't matter, I will be here for a watch regardless.

John Smith

They're doing Star Trek VI between seasons 4 and 5. They may do other stuff as well.

John Smith

Well, if no one else is going to point it out... There's a cute little joke at the beginning of Legacy - Picard's log says they're being diverted from an archaeological survey on Camus II to go to Turkana IV. Legacy is the 80th episode of TNG. In the 79th (and final) episode of TOS, they visit the archaeological dig at Camus II (where Dr. janice Lester found the mind swap device and used in on Kirk/herself). I think this was some writer's ways of pointing out that TNG was now the longer running show.

funky weapon

Re: Project Hail Mary Come at me bros because I think this book is vastly overrated. I found the book ultimately hacky. Grace as a character is like this grating elder millennial who still talks in Buffyspeak and it's like watching a middle aged man try to convince kids that science is cool. it's cringe. I will say that after "a certain point" the book discovers a lot of heart and charm but I was ultimately underwhelmed because everyone I know was telling me it was the greatest sci-fi book written this century. It's not. It's nowhere near it. it's beach reading. And beach reading is fine. but Blindsight this is not. I just had to get that off my chest because everywhere I look I see people glazing this book and I feel like Mugatu wondering if I took crazy pills.

The Maestro

I think Alan Tudyk could be a decent Talaxian but maybe that's cause I could see him as that specific character in Voyager

Andrew

You're totally right. But a lot of people nowadays like that Buffy/marvelspeak dialogue. I do agree that it's somewhat poorly written. But I also think Brandon Sanderson is a really bad author who relies on templates and anachronistic dialogue. For some people, that's exactly what they like, and George and Simone love him, so I could see both of them loving this story as well. To each their own.
